The food we ate today at the Iron Door restaurant on Mount Lemmon was at best mediocre. The corn bread with honey was tasty. The vegetable soup was far too salty. The vegetables were canned corn, potatoes, some pieces of canned tomatoes, and a few bits of squash. All in all, the soup was forgettable. The mountainberry pie with double crust--the pie apparently is bought from a restaurant supplier--was merely OK. Noah, our waiter, served us well. He was courteous, prompt, and helpful. Ambiance? The outdoor seating on the patio was pleasant. We enjoyed observing the hummingbirds. We had looked forward to eating at the Iron Door today, but we were so disappointed. read more

So, I'm the first to admit this was a weird visit, so my expectations did not align with the reality of this restaurant. We had out-of-town visitors, and the drive up took longer than we had expected. It's a BEAUTIFUL drive and perfect for a get-away-from-the-heat trip. However, we had naively expected breakfast, but we didn't get there until 11:00 and found out that they only serve breakfast on the weekends, and even then they stop serving breakfast at 11:00. Strike one for our guests. They have such amazing views here, but their seating doesn't really take advantage of the views. There are only two windows that look over the valley, and only the two tables closest to them can really see anything. Even the patio overlooks the parking lot and street. Weird. Strike two for our guests. We looked at the lunch menu, and our guests could not find anything they were interested in. Since I had already ordered a Bellini, I needed to eat something so ordered the quesadilla. Which was a bit disappointing. It was pretty flat, and really had no flavor. We ordered a couple of pies to go. Note - the price for the pie includes ice cream, but of course we couldn't take ice cream to go - but no discount for not taking the ice cream. What?? Strike three for our guests. So, my husband and I will return to try things again now that we have a better expectation - the chili looked fabulous, as did some of the sandwiches we saw others eating. December 9th. We were in the Tucson area and I decided to take my husband on a scenic drive into the Santa Catalina mountains for a nice lunch in Summerhaven to celebrate his birthday. We were going to go to the Sawmill Restaurant, but it was closed, so the gentleman in the General Store suggested the Iron Door close by. It was perfect. The Lodge interior is rustic and charming, the wait staff smiling and attentive, and we got a table at the edge of the fire pit where a real wood fire was crackling away. It's really a lovely place up in the pines and I'd have given it five stars had the food been a bit better. Actually we saw some loaded baked potatoes go by that looked pretty appetizing, and it could be that drinks and finger food/appetizers might have been a better bet. But we had sandwiches, which came with rather bland sides. My husband had the Claim Jumper beef dip, which was okay. I had the Paydirt, which was not. The supermarket sourdough bread crumbled to pieces in my hands, which made it a mess to try to eat. Rather worse was that the bacon slices on the sandwich had been cooked Lord knows when and were cold and hard, like biting into a piece of stiff, dry cardboard. I had to pull the bacon out of the sandwich and ended up handing it off to the dog who was waiting in the car. No complaints from him. Dessert was much better. We split the Powder Monkey, which was three scoops of vanilla ice cream on a plate of warm cinnamon apples. Very yummy. My husband felt sufficiently celebrated. :) So, four stars largely on ambience. Wife and I with a couple of friends stopped in a for beer and some appetizers. Beer was cold and delivered fast as we were thirsty. Ordered the cornbread and honey, loaded baked potato with Chile and the spinach artichoke dip. The four us us enjoyed each and everyone of those items. Could find nothing wrong with anything except we had to leave and drive back down the mountain! Will be back to enjoy this establishment again soon! read more

Wow !!! Where do I start besides the quiche was the best quiche I've ever had in my life. I'm Still drooling over thinking about it. This cute little tucked away gem was shown to me by my sister and who escapes here every weekend. The service was great we had a gentleman named Nelson and he was so cute and absolute pleasure and made our dining experience fun and memorable. The free ski lift ticket is an awesome perk too !!! $15 value saved right there. It's warm cozy and inviting the smells had our mouths watering from the parking lot and did not disappoint the spring water was the best tasting water I've ever had. I wished we lived in town because now I'm going to have to take a trip to Tucson just to come eat breakfast here. I wish I could have given them zero Stars because they didn't deserve a one star review. Twice I have been there and so disappointed in their attitudes that the second time I left before I ordered the food. The first time I went with my dear friend who is handicapped and struggles walking with a walker. There is no handicapped ramp at the front door so she walked up the hill and went to the back door where there is a ramp. Then we went through the restaurant and back to the front where the Host is stationed. He told us that we had to wait outside because we didn't have a reservation. So out we go, walker and all, and waited for approximately 30 minutes. Then we went back inside and waited another 10 minutes for a table. At that time he was very rude and we almost left but I thought that was just a one-time deal about a person having a bad day and it was a weekend with no reservation. So we tried again, number 2 review. We made a reservation several days in advance, on a Thursday for 14 people to sit at an extended table inside the restaurant. When we arrived we were all told to wait outside but" if we had to go to the restroom we could only go two at a time". We didn't need to use the restroom we needed to be seated at our table that we reserved. Mind you, there is no waiting area outside. It is only blacktop and not even shaded. So, we waited outside for about 25 to 30 minutes. Then they called our name and we walked up the stairs inside to the holding area. We were treated like chattel. The greeter or host or manager started counting off people and told the first seven people to follow him. While I was one of the first seven people, my husband wasn't and I repeatedly told him I don't want to be with the first seven people because I want to sit with my husband. So he counted off people again and these seven people followed him outside to a corner area at a small table. They were walked through the restaurant past several empty tables and told to sit outside in the corner. One of the gentlemen in our group felt very disrespected and voiced his opinion...then he walked out. We were treated so disrespectful that all of us decided to leave. Our reservation was not honored. Our request was not honored. We wanted to eat together so we all decided to go someplace else. We ended up at the Mt. Lemmon Lodge that seated us immediately had our orders out to us with in 15 minutes. The iron door should be called the Iron Fist. I gave them two chances. I will never go there again and that was the opinion of all 14 of us. Sorry Iron Door but you didn't deserve our $500 + that we would have spent that afternoon. Being that we all work on Mount Lemmon, it's going to end up being a lot more than $500 that you lost. Due to your disrespectful attitude. We will all take our business elsewhere. read more

Just have an opportunity to come up to mt.lemmon after the big horn fire. Stop by to have an early lunch in this restaurant. They practice the social distance and safety pretty well. The service and food was good, love most the view and weather. We just wait for 10 minutes to getbthe seat since we came early, but if you come close to the meal time, the wait would be much longer. Seat in the patio, kids love to see those humming bird flying around. My personal favorite is the pie. We order blueberry peach pie with ice cream...delicious!!! read more

Much improved since my last visit. I was here in 2003 and vowed to never return. Drove up the mountain with relatives on labor day and found the village packed with visitors. No where to park. We drove on to the ski lift and found ample parking near the Iron Door and decided to give them another try after my 10 years avoidance. They were short staffed causing us to wait 20 minutes before we were seatted. Food selection and quality was much better. Will not wait another ten years to return. read more

What a nice spot at the top of Mt Lemmon to grab a quick bite. We enjoyed the cooler temps & sitting outside on their patio in the warm sun. While they warned us of being short staffed, everything came out fast & hit the spot. The menu had so many good choices, we'll have to visit again. read more

We have dined at the Iron Door several times. Most of the time, it is an enjoyable experience. I don't know if we'll be back after this visit. We sat inside because it was chilly outside. My first complaint was the bugs. We were inundated with gnats. Literally, inundated. Gross. My husband had the salad and it was OK. It's a salad...that's hard to goof up. I had the mac and cheese, which I've had before and a side of their famous cornbread. The mac and cheese tasted like it came out of a box and I didn't even eat half of it. The cornbread was dry and hard. I ate two bites and that was enough for me. There aren't many options on Mt. Lemmon. Because of this experience, we will definitely try one of the other restaurants. Our server was nice and tried to interact with us. I appreciate his personality and kindness. With that being said, he didn't notice that I only ate a few bites of my meal or ask if everything was acceptable. We did attend during Octoberfest and they have been busier than usual. If they were, I would expect that the food would have been "fresher". read more

Took a drive up to Mt. Lemmon knowing restaurants were limited. One person got the BBQ chicken salad. It was a lovely presentation but unfortunately the only thing BBQ about it was a drizzle of BBQ sauce almost like a dressing. Two people had the chili: it was good and more like a chili soup, but that's because the meat was in chunks versus ground. It had beans in it (so not Texas style) and it had a spicy kick. Our chili eaters liked it. I had a beef and mushroom sandwich topped with crispy onions and a side of aus jus. I enjoyed it and opted for the side salad. Their ranch was really mellow and yummy. We each had a different pie. We would recommend sharing. They were out of ice cream which was supposed to accompany it. That was disappointing as we all agreed the pies would have been better with ice cream. I fell on the uneven top stair going up to the entrance. There are uneven rocks all the way up. Needless to say the food was not worth the $600+ spent getting X-rays to check my fractured elbow. One of the waiters brought me a bag with some ice but other than that no one seemed terribly concerned. I fell flat on my palm trying to break the fall. Took a leisure trip to see the green and feel the cold to Mt. Lemmon. Stopped in at the Iron Door for lunch and it was spectacular. The service was top notch and they were following all the covid precautions. The restaurant was warm and inviting with the smell of fresh cut wood for the fire place. The coffee was hot, strong and plentiful. We tried both of the soups and chili between us. The chili was chunky with a hearty flavor paired with the corn bread that had a crisp top crust that was somewhat sweet that complimented the chili very well. The loaded potato soup was creamy with good chunks of potato, bacon, chives and cheese. Garth's gully is a perfect compliment to the soup beef, green chili and cheese with crispy sourdough. The broccoli cheddar was creamy with smooth broccoli taste and the Jays Chicken complimented it well. The mac-n-cheese with bacon and green chili was warm and tasty a definite must try. If your looking for a day trip with lunch, clean cool air and a view I definitely recommend this! Bonus, ride the ski lift at ski valley across the street for a scenic topper! read more

This is definitely a hidden gem up in the mountains, about an hour away from Tucson. My husband and I found it quite by accident and apparently they were closing in fifteen minutes but mentioned we could get drinks and/or soup, pies, and so we got all three. The service was great and the soup was so delicious. I got the chorizo and corn soup along with cornbread both of which I enjoyed eating. The view up there is absolutely breathtaking! If you're in Tucson and aren't afraid of heights, go there, the view alone is worth the trip! :) read more

I went yesterday with my family and ordered the Soup and 1/2 sandwich combo. Womp womp. Granted it was a half sandwich, it was just slightly bigger than the cup of au jus. The "sliced" beef was definitely sliced deli meat. The Chili tasted like Hormel Chili. All for the beautiful price of 12 freaking 50. You can honestly go to Baggins even Subway and get a better deal. This a long overdue review. This is the closest restaurant to the ski lift area - across the street. Since the weather was a fresh of breath air the outside seating was most appropriate. The chili and cornbread was decent. The corn bread was on the dry side. Honey was provided to drizzle over. I was hoping for a moist cornbread and some out of this world chili but I guess it wasn't happening this time. The Gobbler turkey sandwich with a side of pickle was also a run of the mill type of sandwich. Server was nice. Service was a little behind. This is my vote for best meal on Mt. Lemmon. We went for breakfast on a Sunday in December (before there was any snow) I ordered the Green Chili Quiche (but it wasn't really quiche, it was more of a frittata with no crust.) YUM AND YUM. it was amazingly scrumptious. It came with fruit (2 kinds of melon and some grapes, yeah sure a few of the grapes were rotten (these place don't do a whole lotta business so all is forgiven if they "age" their produce a little.) My man had the cinnamon raisin french toast with bratwurst. Also good, but not as good as mine. My brother and sister-in -aw had a combo breakfast (eggs, toast, meat, potatoes) - I didn't get to taste it - but their potatoes looked awesome - nice and crispy/well done. Menu is mostly sandwiches and salads but they all sounded interesting / good. Iron Door is not a fancy restaurant - definitely has a laid back, casual, mountain cabin vibe. Came upon this place by seeing the sign for Chili and pie. If you are in the area you need to stop. The scenery is amazing with a great view. From the moment we walked in the staff was amazing and so kind. I even received a history lesson of the cabin. I ordered the days special beef stroganoff, assuming a pile of noodles and stroganoff. Oh.. no. It was so much better. Definitely not the classic recipe. Think more like a hearty delicious stew. Oh...and don't get me started on the cornbread. Drizzled with honey and a crumble top. From the suggestion of our server I believe his name was Noah, I asked his favorite pie. We will get back to him. His answer mountain berry peach crumble. OMG. Hands down with no doubt BEST PIE OF MY LIFE. A small personal crumble top pie. The pie was so good you definitely want to save some for later. This is food your grandmother would make you. There is some fantastic cooks in that kitchen. And to the manager Noah was absolutely spectacular. So kind, talked to us like we were family. Your whole staff made this visit. Please support this local place. This is food you don't find everywhere and service that was top notch. And get an extra pie. Cause boy I wish I did.
