My hubby and my daughters celebrated my birthday at Ishi Sushi last night because I suggested going there, and we all liked their food. We ordered two (H4) orders of Chirashi, one (C12) una don (eel don), and I ordered (C13) the Chilean Seabass. The owners were very friendly. As we spoke with them casually, the lady knew it was my birthday yesterday. She said they would serve me a complimentary cake as dessert later. The Chirashi bowl had tuna (2), salmon (2), shrimp (1), white fish (1), yellow tail (1), albacore (1), uni (1), smelt egg (1), tamago (1), & salmon egg. The portions were good, and the fish was so fresh and delicious. My hubby and older daughter liked their Chirashi bowls. For the una don (eel served over the rice), my younger daughter also liked it so much. I liked my Chilean Seabass. It was served with salad and miso soup. The Chilean Seabass was fresh and flavorful with a tangy, sweet flavor. They provided a piece of lemon wedge, so I squeezed some lemon juice on it before eating. Then the owner brought us the Japanese Yuzu cheesecake. I was surprised that the owner gave our entire party slices of complimentary cake, rather than just one for the birthday person; mine even came with a candle. It was very generous of them. Came here on a Sunday an hour after they opened and it was quiet. I don't think a lot of people know about it because it's kind of tucked away in a plaza. There was the server and the chef. I believe the chef is Japanese. The sushi rolls were buy one get the second one half off. We got one bento combo and 4 rolls. The portion were standard but each roll was big. They were stuffed with meat tightly. We got the bento with tonkatsu pork and mixed tempura. It came with a miso soup, 4 small California rolls, salad, rice, and edamame. The tempura was fresh and crispy. Again they didn't skimp on the portion. We got the cucumber roll, full moon roll, spider roll, and lobster roll. The cucumber rolls' salmon sashimi was so creamy because the salmon was very fresh. Nice to have a sushi roll without rice. The full moon roll was eel and avocado with fake crab meat. It was standard but I love eel so it was a must. The spider roll was soft shell crab. The pieces with the crab legs were huge. The fried soft shell crab was fresh and crispy. The crawfish meat of the lobster roll was tasty but it had the most fishy smell out of the 4 rolls we got. It wasn't my favorite but it wasn't bad. For the prices of these entrees and the huge pieces of sushi, it was a good deal. I recommend this sushi spot, might try the omakase next time. read more

We got a mailer about their anniversary with all of their sushi rolls at 50% off, so we decided to try this place out. It's located in a square, that's kind of like a strip mall very near the freeway. We stopped by for lunch. When we walked in, the place was empty and we weren't greeted at all. They gave us some menus to look, and barely gave us any time to look at it before coming back to take our order. We ordered two rolls and two hand rolls. All the rolls were mediocre at best- sloppily rolled together, with the quality of fish only passing. We had to ask for refills several times. The entire time we were there, no one else came in. I was disappointed on several levels, but I can overlook the service if the food was good, but it wasn't even close to that. Spare your time and tastebuds-pass on this place. read more

I have been to this sushi restaurant for about 2 years now. It's quite literally the best sushi you can get for this price in OC. A sweet old couple and a Japanese man who's devoted his entire life into sushi making works here. In this plaza, they're usually the ones with less people or customers and I'm not sure why. I had drawn them a drawing before and they cherished it so much they hung it up in their store and every time I dine there they'll give me free salmon. They told me that the drawing I made was their new motivation to keep going even when they were gonna close. These sweet souls said they're really struggling with buisness and I'd do anything to boost their name. I've tried a lot of their menu options and their fish is sweet, no fishy smell, thick, and truly authentic unlike a lot of sushi places in OC. Please please please give them a try. We came on a saturday afternoon and we were the only customers there. I was a bit hesitant, but we gave it a shot and it was pretty good. The lunch special was a few more bucks more than what I was expected, but they do give you a lot. I've had my share of Japanese cuisines and sushi is definitely one of my fav foods. I've experienced the range from Michelin rated sushi to grocery store grade sushi but this place is near rock bottom. The place was pretty quiet when we arrived, there were many signs up about their sushi promotions such as omakase. We were a party of 2 and there was only one other table, the staff were inattentive as they were sitting down at one of the empty tables and watching tv. We ordered a couple rolls all of which were cut unevenly and were falling apart. The tataki was drowning in sauces to cover up the low quality taste of the fish. Lastly, the waitress gave attitude when I adjusted the tip to 15% from the preset 20%. This place is not cheap either so I wouldn't recommend anyone to come. read more

I was going to stop at Hide Out Cafe but was told that food was no longer being made. My friend and I walked a little bit more down the area and saw this restaurant. We decided to give it a try. The restaurant is minimally decorated. They don't have music playing. It's very quiet. We were seated and given menus. Their menu has a lot of variety. We ordered a few different items: toro roll, seared salmon nigiri, chicken katsu, and a spider roll. The seared salmon came out first; it was fresh and delicious. The spider roll came out next; it was perfectly crispy. The tonkatsu came with rice, salad, and a miso soup. The tonkatsu was flavorful, tender on the inside, and perfectly crispy on the outside. The salad dressing was yummy! The toro roll was amazing; it melts in your mouth. Our server checked on us a couple of times to see how the food was tasting. We came here on a Friday night and every place in this plaza was busy or had a line out the door except this place. Ishi Sushi had no one in there except one other couple. We were wary, but the food was fine. Their prices are mixed considering what items they have. Some are a good deal, while some are average price. Their menu is big, which is a little worrying. I don't know if their sushi prices are overpriced, because I didn't try the sushi. Service was fine. The foie gras rice dish had an unpleasant bitterness and a strong fishy smell. The teriyaki sauce in the rice failed to cover up the bitterness and fishy flavor of the foie gras. We ordered several items for two people, which totaled $220, and we still left feeling unsatisfied. We came here during the weekday for lunch and in an empty, hidden plaza, there was absolutely no line or wait for dine in. It wasn't until over half an hour later that another party came in and they were seated at the opposite side of the restaurant. It's a very fancy looking sushi places for sure and I really liked the decor that they had. Also, it was super cool to see the restaurant's namesake chef in the flesh himself, Ishi-san ! We got the: 1) Soft Shell Crab: -So crispy and crunchy on the outside, but moist and yummy on the inside. Had this with the lemon and sauce they provided and it was divine. -I usually don't order soft shell crab, so I'm glad that my friend did 2) Ankimo: -I have never actually had this before and I didn't know what it was until I went home & looked it up afterwards. (Monkfish liver!)I -Without knowing what it was, I definitely got a foie gras like vibe from the dish and the sauce it came with added a citrus-y taste. -I'll be honest though, the texture was a bit "denser" than what I expected and as the meal went on, this became less desirable to eat (not that it was bad, but I think I'd have enjoyed it on bread haha). 3) Chiraishi: -Very huge portion and definitely something that can be shared for later. -It comes with rice and a large portion of salad. - I got to try some of the uni that came with her dish and it was very creamy and fresh. None of that bottom of the ocean taste that you get from some places. That's how you know it's high quality. 4) Nigiri Plate: -All the nigiri was super fresh, the fish slices were portion-able and did not come with too much rice. Loved it. -It also comes with an 8 piece roll with salmon, tuna, and avocado in it. Not bad! Very filling We also got freshly ground horseradish with our food (EXCELLENT touch, love it when Japanese restaurants do this) and miso soup. This is a hidden gem in Rowland Heights. It's always about the food, which is very good. And this place has charm, and the hospitality is top notch. As authentic as it gets and the servers speak nihonggo no less. Had a quick lunch here and did not expect much but boy, were we pleasantly surprised. I came with a friend who lived in Tokyo for over a decade who lives in the area but has never tried it. Now we are going to be regulars. We both ordered chicken katsu and curry which came out with a quickness and holy cow it was so good, we probably scarfed it down in 5 minutes tops. Portions are Americanized (a.k.a. big) though the manner of cooking and preparation is very authentic Japanese--none of that oily, overly seasoned nonsense. My family and I tried out Ishi Sushi this afternoon, and we were so impressed by the amount of fish that Chef Ishi gives! They have a BOGO 50% roll special too, so the specialty rolls are such a good deal. The fish quality was super fresh, and they even use real, fresh wasabi. The restaurant itself is pretty quiet--when we arrived there was no one else there and 2 other parties arrived while we were dining. And it's terrible! It may looked nice in pic, but it's too greasy! The foie gras is totally prepared wrong and. It's fresh! Everything has too much seasoning, and the rice is really bad quality rice. Also overcooked! And the fish is not even fresh, seriously? What's even worse? The chair at the counter/bar is really low, I guess they just don't wanna invest in the perfect chair for the counter, so they just use the one that is for the table. Very uncomfortable dining experience! I expect to have at least fine dining quality food, and this is terrible! I am so disappointed! Well, I'd rather get some sashimi from mitsuwa! Totally not worth it, waste my time!  From the plating I am thinking that maybe they do wanna do good. But serving fresh food is the basis of every restaurant! I was there with my wife to celebrate our anniversary Sunday night, which a lot nice Japanese restaurant not opened so the choices are fairly limited. We decide to give Ishi Sushi a try. We ordered 9 items A La Carte, which includes seared toro, beef tongue, and A5 beef. Everything taste very good and we have more than enough food for 2 of us. After tip (22%) the total bill was $300. The service was attentive and prompt. Overall not many people dining in when we were there so the place is very quiet. Decoration is nice and clean but not fancy. We liked this restaurant a lot. Like many other review says, the price is a bit high around this location and this may not be a frequent visit location giving its cost per person. However, if you are looking for quality over quantity and a nice and quiet location to enjoy some superb Japanese food this location will not disappoint you. read more
