Obsessed is an understatement. If you haven't been to TOROMI in West Covina yet, you are seriously missing out. We ordered a massive spread, and everything was an absolute 10/10. The sashimi was literally a work of art and tasted just as fresh as it looked. But the Wagyu Beef Don was easily one of my favorite dishes of the entire meal. The combination of tender Wagyu, white rice, and egg was so simple but SO good. I honestly wasn't expecting it to stand out as much as it did. The Wagyu fried rice was also incredible and definitely worth ordering. We also tried a bunch of their specialty rolls, most of which are pictured here, and not a single one missed. Everything was beautifully presented, flavorful, and clearly made with a lot of attention to detail. The restaurant itself is also so cute and has such a nice atmosphere, making it a perfect spot for date night or a special dinner. Food wise, I think if you know all the similar restaurants in the area, the pricing is very competitive and great value. Now here's where it kind of missed the mark, the rice in my chirashi was a bit off, not quite sushi rice IYKYK. Mt Fuji roll: The avocado was crunchy, idk if that's intended but it was weird. The fried thin daikon over it was amazing. I do think this might be a 1-time thing, I've never had crunch avocado in a sushi roll before. Tempura combo: This was a must order, cooked perfectly and priced lower than competitors. Chirashi (Room for improvement): The rice has be better, and I'd like some fresh wasabi in the chirashi bowl even if it's just a small amount, along with a shiso leaf under the uni. The toro I had was also on the lean side. Shrimp head soup is +$1, so why not just charge $39 and add all these things to begin with. This is basically a "premium chirashi", so why not just make this better and call it that, and offer a regular chirashi as well. I think if someone is willing to spend in the high 30s-40 for a chirashi, a few dollars isn't going to matter if you get a more polished product. I do have a product suggestion: The Toromi Bowl (giant premium chirashi). If you've ever had Akasaka in Hacienda Heights, they used to be well known for a huge chirashi bowl that people waited hours to try. Get a bowl that's 30-40% bigger, add more rice, salmon, albacore, maybe yellowtail, regular tuna, some eel, and maybe one more piece of scallop, keep the rest of the premium stuff the same and top it off with a lot of ikura and ginger slice fillers, and charge $55-59. Nobody has anything like this in the area anymore, not even Ootoro (too small) or the current Akasaka (they've removed sweet shrimp/uni/toro). Thanks! read more

My friends and I had a great experience at Toromi during their soft opening. We tried a little bit of everything including a few different rolls, assorted sashimi, some sushi, two kinds of carpaccio, poke nachos, and the bluefin tuna bone marrow. Everything tasted really fresh and well prepared. The sashimi in particular was really good, and we really enjoyed all of the dishes we tried. Our server, Anna, was also wonderful. She was very friendly, attentive, and made us feel welcome throughout our meal. I'd say Toromi is a bit more affordable compared to a lot of other sushi spots, especially considering the quality of food. In my opinion, the quality here is actually better than some of the more pricey sushi places I've been to. I thought the fried rice was a little too sweet and mushy? I prefer the grains of rice to be distinct and properly colored/flavored. My dad gave it an it's ok. Pictured below is the leftovers. He has no problem devouring a large bowl of rice and noodles. He left a lot so maybe 2.5 / 5 for the fried rice. The youngster ate the salmon roll and said it was good. Appears to like the restaurant so 5/5 stars for basic salmon roll. I ordered the OMG roll for lunch the next day. I'm very surprised the avocado hasn't browned yet.
