Date of visit: July 3, 2022 I had tripped and fallen over a week ago, and my shoulder was still bothering me, as well as dealing with my usual sore muscles and feet. Grotto Spa had just opened up near ALDI, and as I wanted to get some self-care done, figured, "Why not?" The place was able to take me as a walk-in; I paid $60 for an hour (and tipped on my card 18 percent; nice option that my other places don't have)... and while I was told that it would be a ten-minute wait, it still felt like a long time before my masseuse came in. Now, while she did a great job on my shoulders - I could feel the knots in them popping out - and popping my fingers near the end, there are a few things of note I should mention: - The hot stone treatment on my back wasn't what I expected; rather than laying the stones on my back, she actually used them to massage it after placing some hot oil on me. - The amount of acupressure she used on my ankles and hands was a bit too much; normally I don't make a peep when I'm having acupressure done, but this was the first time I actually let out yelps of pain. (Seriously, it really hurt!) - And, no hot towel... nor water offered after my massage. I'm used to my regular massage places having at least a cup of water afterwards, especially when I'm feeling dehydrated - but not having it available made me head to my car where I knew I had a bottle waiting. Granted, my masseuse did take care of my sore muscles, and after hearing her let out an "Ai yaa!" when she saw how bad my feet needed exfoliating I felt a bit sorry for her - but with her going a bit TOO hard on the massage, I may have to stick to my usual places before going back to Grotto Spa. read more

After reading some of the other reviews I felt like I should update my review to include that when I called for a reservation it was clearly someone who was not working at the location. This was apparent when I walked in no one was at the front desk and the person who I spoke to on the phone was definitely not there. I was honestly surprised and so very confused to see the masseuse appear. I felt like this third party / off site receptionist may contribute to people's appointment times being pushed. read more

One star but not for the massage... My boyfriend and I had an appointment scheduled for 5. I got a call around 3 something asking to move the appointment to 5:45. I said yes because I had no issue with that... We arrive at 5:45 and wait at the counter for around 30 minutes with no one showing up. I called the shop and the man answers and tells me he will call the workers in the shop, apparently they took on another client during our reserved time and would be ready for us at 6:30... so I ask him for a discount because at that point we'd have been waiting for almost an hour. He gave me 10 dollars off which I didn't think was enough but was okay with. We come back at 6:30 and wait another 10 mins then are rushed back for the massage The massage was good, not the best or worst I've had in my life Now here's the real issue. I didn't feel like tipping much because of the wait so my boyfriend tried to tip 10. The lady acted offended and asked if that was for her or the both of them. I told her to tip 10 on the card too because I felt pressured. I asked for a receipt (which she didn't want to give me at first) and she handed it to me and HAD GIVEN HERSELF A $20 TIP NOT $10!!!!! This is a new place that recently opened up this is going to be like a 3 in 1 review since I have been here 3 times. 1.) I was with my mom runnings errands at the UPS store and noticed a Grand Opening banner on our way out of the parking lot. At first it was a little confusing there were two doors and wasn't specified which one but the sign said OPEN we tried the doors at both ends and no one was there so it was CLOSED. 2.) A couple of weeks later my mom was back in town and we thought why not let's swing by. This time they were open. When we first walked in there was a gentleman at the door that didn't speak English. We were trying to get information on the services and he didn't understand so he called the owner. On that day there were only two people working apparently. The front desk guy and a lady that came out and got my mom. I had no preference who did what, I just wanted a massage. So the guy was nice just didn't speak English. I was not a fan, even though fully clothed when he did start the massage his hands were sweaty and clammy. Then to add to that he was breathing so hard and at this point I was still in pain regarding another issue so I had to tell him light pressure multiple times. 3. Most recently again I was looking for a massage place but I wanted more of a SPA style. This time I did a google search and I saw that it was close to me I called and they didn't require an appointment at the time. I saw there was a GROUPON available and I thought why not (now mind didn't know it was the same place) so I bought the 90 min massage for $104. When I drove up I realized it was the same massage place initially I was going to cancel and get a refund but then I didn't see the option to cancel so I thought ok why not again. I walked in and the lady at the counter again didn't speak English I told her I got the 90 min off of Groupon. I will admit I went in not a very good mood but was hoping the massage would change that. So I showed the lady my Groupon and she was quick to start pressing on my phone which I didn't like. She has me in a room doesn't say anything so I just sit there. I have had massages before but all places are different. She walks in with a basket and tells me take off all my clothes and lie face down on the bed. I asked if there was a towel wrap or some cover there wasn't which I was ok with. So the massage began. It started out nice I made sure to tell her I can't have heavy pressure. It started off nicely and I was relaxed then came the pressure... I told her a few times too hard. Then the stones that almost burned me they were so hot and then the hot towels which again too hot. Luckily I like HOT but this was a bit much and I wondered what about people with more sensitive skin. Towards the end I was thinking tip... How much I took into consideration and the time if it was more pleasant like a real SPA I would have given more but the fact that I almost got burnt and the lack of communication I was not happy. So I had the tip ready but wanted some ones. I go to the counter to get some water (mind you already paid with my Groupon) and the lady gave me change so the two of them are confused as to why I wanted ones because the lady gave me two of the same bills. They looked confused and were literally discussing it in front of me. SO I asked them what am I supposed to leave as a tip and where it was listed and dI was required to again just looked at me and said $20. I agree and any other time I would have but 1 not that great of a job then at the end I felt bullied. The girl that did my massage stomped her feet, threw a tantrum and ran off. After the few experiences I have had I will not be returning to this massage salon. read more

My husband and I just got back from our 60min foot massage and it was great. Cindy and Jenny, were great with the amount of pressure they used. My husband and I liked it so much that we bought their package of buy 5 services get 1 free. We were able to use it towards our massage today. It's $40 for 1hr. They even use hot stones and scrub your feet which was a nice pleasant surprise. The sign is under Grotto Spa but spoke to Kevin there and they are waiting for the new sign to come, as Island Foot Spa. Would definitely recommend checking them out. Took me awhile to get this review together because I had to think about it. Made an appointment for an early evening massage a few weeks ago. The guy who answered the phone confirmed my appointment. When I arrived, the place was dark, locked up and no one was there to open the door around 6 pm. I called the number and the guy said he was coming and ran in from the parking lot somewhere about 10 minutes later. When I entered the guy asked me to reschedule my appointment 30 minutes later because the masseuse had started working on someone else while he was gone, although I had an appointment and the other person was just a walk in. I refused to reschedule since I had somewhere to be later, so instead they asked the guy to cut his appointment to 30 mins instead of one hour and then took me in instead. The massage was OK but not consistent. Room was cold af and they didn't turn the heater on. I felt like she rushed through the appointment although she messed up on the appointment times. When we were done, no tea or water was offered and the guy didn't offer any extra discount. He just said that the girl didn't read his appointment notes apparently, and even asked me to write a five star review for them to "...average out the bad review the other guy is going to leave them" (the walk in that they took in, during my appointment time). I was a walk-in and they took me right away. I got the reflexology for 60 min. I didn't get my masseuse's name but he gave lots of pressure. I think I will try the body massage next time to focus more on problematic areas. Overall a great relaxing experience :-) read more

I am suffering a bad back spasms for couple weeks now and sciatica down both legs. I needed some relief and they were able to take me in right away. I felt massage could have done more on my spasm area. They worked well on my sciatica pin both legs. But I have to say walking out to my car I felt at least 30-40% better. Having personal experience with foot reflexology spas in Asia, Island Foot Spa is by far the best I have had here in the USA. They applied just the right pressure in all the right spots. Don't go here! I get massages all over San Diego and this was the worst one I've had. Hard table, cold room, feet not covered and cold, fast and hard pressure. I asked her to go lighter after she aggressively rubbed the sensitive inside of my upper arm by my armpit until It hurt so bad I had to pull away in pain. She said sorry, but I'm left with bruises on my arms and legs. NOT relaxing. She stretched both my arms back one at a time FULLY exposing my breasts on each side. Then, at the end when I went to the counter she gave me a cup of boiling hot water and I burned my lip. I said "this is hot water!" She took it back and proceeded to give me ANOTHER CUP OF HOT WATER. No communication, no questionnaire, the place was empty and I understand why. I'm going to see if I can get money back from Groupon. read more

Called to ask about how much the massages were, and an older lady answered say they were $80 for an hour and $60 for a half hour. I felt that was high based on some of the pictures here and FB. I went into the shop and saw the hour is actually $60 and half hour is $35. Whoever is answering the phone is taking extra money and/or scaring off business. read more
