Since we had a little layover on our way back to Philly, we wanted to grab something to eat. This was convenient - right across from the gate we were leaving from and had some quick bites we figured we would enjoy. There's a dining and bar area - we sat at the bar. It was like a wrap around bar and gave sort of diner vibes with the decor, lighting, and overall look - kept up well and clean. The service was good, with the bartender/waiter greeting us as soon as we sat down and being pretty friendly and attentive the whole time. Guessing since it's in the airport and they know might be pressed for time, they moved in a very timely fashion that we didn't wait long for our food. We ordered apps to share: Island Wings and this seafood platter special that had calamari, shrimp, red snapper and scallops (all fried) with fries. Everything was served hot and was okay - nothing spectacular but also nothing bad so we were satisfied. I think I was expecting a different taste for the wings - like a little spice or kick to it - but it was more bbq saucy which was ok. The drinks were made really well and we did a shot for di road. Our waitress was great. We were able to sit outside of the restaurant in the terminal which was great since the restaurant was cramped. The food was terrable. I had the shrimp and fish fry. They did not have cocktail sauce for the shrimp. The breading was soft like they boiled it in water and not oil. The fish was tasteless. My wife had the chicken sandwich. It was also tasteless. Before I retired I traveled a lot and would eat at least 1 meal a week in airports. This was by far one of the worst meals I had. 1 Sandwich, 1 shrip and fish fry and 3 beers was $72. Our server was overly cheerful and left in the middle of our meal. The new server was new and struggled. It took forever to get our check. We had the crab cake Benedict and the jerk mahi sandwich. Food was mid at best. Crab cakes were mostly breading. The jerk mahi sandwich was literally unseasoned. The fish was dry and over cooked and the waffle fries were ice cold and hard like hockey pucks. We found a 5-star gem in an airport! We stopped in for dinner because our flight was delayed. Thankful they were open after 9 pm as my flight was delayed. Ordered the Red Snapper Reuben with truffle fries. The snapper was very moist and flavorful, with a 6 oz filet. They fraudulently charged me $500--I did NOT spend $500 at this crappy bar and restaurant. I called the bar for an hour trying to dispute to dispute and understand why they did that, and they did not pick up, nor do they have an answering machine. I don't know why they can't pick up the phone when all the servers do is stand around and take forever to take your order. They charge you for WATER and add an automatic 18% gratuity for the crappiest service at the airport. Go ANYWHERE else and you can find better Cuban and/or seafood. read more

We spent $100 for 2 drinks, two omelettes, and a side of corned beef hash. One top of that, they gave us the wrong omelettes. The omelettes were good but the toast was not. We didn't care for the type of bread they use. The drinks were great. I guess for $18 a piece they should be. The location is clean and the staff is friendly. The service is prompt. Ok, so i already expect high costs and tasteless food, though I know some airports are bucking this trend. However, based on my experience at this restaurant, MIA is not one of those airports. We chose this restaurant solely because it was right next to our departure gate and we needed a filling sit down meal after turbulence on our previous 4-ish hour flight left us with no food service and only water. We were quickly seated inside and waited on promptly by Rosa. We selected the blackened fish sandwich and pork Cubano egg rolls. Rosa very persuasively asked if my husband wanted cheese, jalapeño, and avocado on his fish sandwich (which frankly was an odd combo for a fish sandwich), and if i wanted guacamole with my egg rolls, to which we said sure, not thinking there would be an up-charge. Both of these meals came with their intended sauces and there was no mention of additional costs for the items suggested by our server, nor do they appear on the menu. I feel Rosa took advantage of our being in a hurry and already travel weary to jack the bill up another $9 on an already expensive bill. In the end, my husband liked his fish sandwich, and the filet was large, tasty, and by itself, worth the price charged. However the added toppings detracted from the tasty sandwich, and my egg rolls were tasteless and nothing like a Cubano, clearly heated up from frozen and certainly not enhanced by guacamole Do yourself a favor and skip this restaurant all together, or at a minimum buyer beware of the upsells and things that could easily be made from frozen. read more

Near Gate D49/50. Very decent food at expected higher airport prices. Portions are larger and flavors are on point. We had a layover in MIA and dined here at the Islander Bar and Grill for a late lunch. Service was efficient and friendly. Searing was decently comfortable, and they have seating both inside and outside (outside means outside at the hallway area inside the terminal ;) ) Decent food all around. Worst service and food This is located in the Miami airport Because you are basically "trapped" here; you'd think the food would be better. Ordered the breakfast combo ie: two eggs, bacon, toast, home fries. It too the server over 15 minutes to even acknowledge us, there was a total of 20 customers who already had there orders so YES the wait was ridiculous. The food came out quickly and ICE COLD. We waited another 20 minutes for her to again acknowledge us. I had the Oder take off the bill. She got me my drink and recommended the special which she made sound appetizing. When it came it was as she described minus the portion size. It was a massive plate of food and more than I could eat. It was delicious and I enjoyed it. The bill came and I was also a bit disappointed because when I hear a dish referred to as a special there is usually a "deal" involved. They don't mention it up front but there are up charges for toppings such as jalapeno or avocado. They also include an 18% gratuity on the check (which for this level of service is fine). Both up charges and gratuity are noted on the receipt but if you are not paying attention, what then? All that being said the food was quite good for airport food. A busy, noisy airport restaurant felt like a institutional cafeteria. I sat directly under a speaker that played, loudly and sometimes distorted, oldies and honkytonk music rather than anything Caribbean that you might expect from an Island restaurant with a Caribbean menu. Turkey burger was satisfying despite the meager red pepper and $2.50 slice of avocado. I didn't want fries and asked for cole slaw instead. It was inedibly sweet. On the plus side, my Pellegrino water was cold and the waiter seemed nice although I couldn't hear him over the music. Islander was the closest restaurant to my terminal, so I stopped by before my flight. It was packed with fellow travelers and I was able to get a seat at the bar. For airport food, it was actually fairly decent. Since it was burger day, I ordered their Cuban style burger. This was a tasty buttery brioche roll with a juicy patty of beef, a slice of medianoche ham and a sweet plantain for garnish & a sweet surprise. The sweet potato fries were decently crispy and my Zacapa mojito good. Make sure to get a double shot though! It was good enough to be able to nap through the one hour ground stop weather delay prior to takeoff! Speaking of sweets, the key lime pie was just how I like it - slightly jiggly and not overly sweet. Since it was packed, there was a slight delay in getting my order and a miscommunication with my fries (regular vs the sweet potato ones I ordered). The Breakfast Egg Sandwich was delicious. Ours came in a brioche bun - soft, buttery and pillowy - with a thick fried egg and two bacon slices plus melted cheese. And this sandwich was absolutely delicious. For the side we went with fried potatoes which were super well seasoned and super yummy even just on their own. Luckily we overheard a nearby table rave about the Bonfire hotsauce so even though that really only comes with the shrimp we got it too. The fish was good and tasty, but man - that hotsauce is great! - somehow creamy and hot and spicy - you must ask for the hotsauce. I was just eating it straight up! I believe there is only one islander bar and grill - I'm reviewing in the upper 50s in D terminal. Chaotic welcome, sat down (family of 4), asked for milk on menu - said no milk. Asked for hot chocolate on menu, same thing. 3 desserts listed - 2 flans and a key lime pie - asked for flan - nope, got key lime pie. Basically the waitress would say she didn't think they had it and what was our second choice. To top it off, they include an 18 percent tip and you can add or subtract from that amount. I imagine most people don't notice and just sign. This was definitely not 18 percent tip territory for the 8 minutes we were there. Good morning Miami! Arrived here on a red eye from LAX. Was interesting as the terminal does not offer that many places to eat. I was able to sit immediately upon entering the restaurant and ordered the egg sandwich and a cup of coffee. The sandwich was good, messy but good. The bacon was alright and the eggs were cooked to perfection. The only thing that was eh...was the potatoes but I wasn't planning on eating them anyway. Service was fast enough for me to catch my connecting flight but lacking slightly. I was just great to eat and run. I wish there were 1/2 stars as I'd of given them 3 1/2 but it wasn't an option.
