The service has taken a bit of a dive. So has the quality of the food overall. I come back every year and due to COVID I missed returning last year and this is one of my stops for pastries to bring the family in visiting. Overall, they are still great but there was barely a soul in there today and they kept serving people coming in after me. I just waited patiently at the counter while opportunistic customers kept skipping ahead and jumping toward anyone free. So either I should have lunged at the servers as some of the more elderly patrons did or just wait until I was acknowledged. My servers also kept getting interrupted or pulled by another server that had to make mine focus on her orders the moment she finally tried to take my order. It's the little things that can kill service and today they did everything they could to just be lax. I still love this place and their food. I do think some of the foods changed in quality and they have some funky experiments like their caramel tres leches in my photo. That doesn't taste at all like tres leches. For those of you who aren't from Miami, this is a staple of our city. I recently went on a Sunday morning and of course the wait to sit inside was a while. But we were told if we found a table outside that was unoccupied those are first come, first serve. Luckily we were served right away. You cannot come to this restaurant and NOT order the croquetas. They're the best croquetas ever made and I'm not exaggerating. This is coming from a Cuban woman. They're addicting. So I ordered the Desayuno Criollo which comes with TWO of the heavenly croquetas, 2 eggs how you want them, either French fries or house fries, Cuban toast and cafe con leche. All for $8. I had a terrible experience at Islas Canarias Bakery this morning. I placed a takeout order over the phone and was told it would be ready in 15 minutes. I arrived 20 minutes later, paid for my order, and was then told my toasts were "almost ready." After waiting another 15 minutes, my entire order had gone cold. When I asked to speak with the manager, Adilis, she informed me in an unfriendly manner that they had temporarily run out of French bread. This is poor management. Came here for dinner during these COVID times and was not shocked to see how well they were handling it. This Restaurant has always been pretty large so even with the social distancing guidelines it is still able to host enough people so that there is not a constant wait line like many other venues right now. Aside from the large venue, the speedy service also helps with the availability. The food is surprisingly good for this Breakfast/bakery stablished business. Service is prompt and dining too is clean. The only discrepancies are the online ordering platform which is unfriendly n very basic. Also, the pictures of the menus are old, not reflecting accurately the dishes prices. Fora restaurant and "I assume" corporation should not be difficult to fix these discrepancies. Now, for $30.00 dish it is preferable to go to a more suitable restaurant. After getting home and siting at the dinner table we find that our food order is incomplete. I ordered beef milanesa and was extremely disappointed with it. The beef was just 1/8 of inch thick, and they fried it until it burned. I complained to manager and didn't do anything. Very disappointed. I use to come here a lot until my recent experience. Be careful as they will add more money to your credit card after you've signed the receipt. Make sure you don't throw away your receipt so that you can compare it to your credit card statement. I called them, can't get anyone to help me, manager is always busy, no returned calls either. This review is for the bakery. We have bought party platters from several other bakeries in the area, but this one stands out. Let me first say that by platter, I mean pastelitos, bocaditos etc. Ya know, real party platters! :) Price-wise, it's pretty much on par with the other bakeries. Order taken over the phone the day before, easy peasy. If you want anything other than the typical, order at least a couple of days prior. Croqueticas. Delicious, of course! Can't go wrong with their croquettes. Bocaditos. Yum! Fresh and no skimping on the spread. Pastelitos de Carne. These were good too. Not my favorite, but fresh & tasty. Pastelitos de Queso. I've only been here once before to pick up some platters. Today the fam decided to actually have breakfast here. The place was packed but luckily some other family member had already locked down a spot. We were seated outside since it was a beautiful day with a great breeze even my hair could withstand. Our waitor was fabulous and truly the service here from beginning to end was great. I know there known for their croquettes so when I ordered breakfast I made sure to include one. Everyone's order came with cafe con leche and a tostada. My coffee was great, the tostada..meh....it was hardly toasted and the butter was just slapped on, not melted into the creases at all. My breakfast didnt look like what I pictured in my head. It just wasn't appealing. It was called Huevos Tapados. It consisted of fried eggs, cheese ,and ham with creole sauce. What came out just looked like boring melted cheese covering everything. But, surprisinly it was good, cold, but good. The eggs were just layered with ham and creole sauce with the cheese melted on top so you didn't see the goodness underneath. Everyone else had the same breakfast which I hear is popular. The Criollo breakfast comes with 2 eggs any style, 2 croquettes, fries or potatoes, swine galore (bacon, ham, or sausage). Everyone had no complaints besides all the plates came out cold. Who likes a cold breakfast, not I..... nor the rest of my family. I know this place gets packed but it's Always that way here. They need to work on that, lucky we were starving and just wanted to eat. So besides the food being cold everything else was great. The service, the seating, and even the flavor of the food was good. Not sure if the chain just overall went downhill, or it's this location, but definitely our recent visit does not measure up to what I remember from a few years ago at the other location. We had some visitors from out of state and wish we had brought them to another place to showcase some Miami delicacies. First, they serve up some pressed dinner roll. Not buttered and toasted like La Carreta. Disappointing and also started me wondering if we have made the wrong choice coming here. We had two servers trying to help us, but neither speaks enough English for us to be able to communicate much and get our questions answered. Let me start out by saying that I love Cuban food- I grew up with an exceptional Cuban chef, my mommy- Mimi! So when I eat out and it's Cuban, I'm really picky. Here's my problem with Islas.. inconsistent! One thing I must admit is this: there are no better ham croquettes... but man cannot live by croquettes alone! I've been to Islas more than 2 dozen times. There are times that I leave with a great feeling- saying Wow! that was good!! Like the times I've ordered a creamy soup with croquettes. But there are times, and I have to say about 50 percent, that I leave with a Charlie Brown or Linus sad face. So in 1 week I went to their location twice. The first time was good. I ordered croquettes, Cuban toast and Café con leche. All were good and I'm Including the pictures from the good day. The following day I ordered an egg white omelette with onions and cheese, Cuban toast and Café con leche. You won't see a picture of these because I didn't think it was worth it. The egg white was burned completely at the top. I had to dig deep to find something beneath the burned spot that would be salvageable. But sadly, I had to leave most of it. So then came the toast- The thing I love about Cuban toast is when it comes out crunchy warm on the outside and with melted butter on the inside. It's simple, amazing and delicious! But the one I received had way too much butter and was kind of cold. In addition, the milk from the Café con leche had something black floating inside- Maybe specks of coffee but I had not poured the coffee in yet. I asked for the milk to be warmer and she just reinserted the same cup in the heat mechanism, made it as hot as possible and handed it back to me. (I didn't think you could do that for hygienic reasons) but it's my fault because I should have asked for a new cup. The final thing was that I ordered croquettes to go and 2 coladas. As usual, the croquettes were perfect. But the expresso had no sugar. It was very bitter and with "no espumita" Why no sugar? I never asked her to exclude the sweetness. I don't like to be mean when I write but I promised to be truthful and my hope is that this place becomes consistently good!! I think attention needs to paid to those who are carrying out the work. First, hire people who enjoy their work, who make customer service a priority, who listen when you make a request, who check on you to see if things are ok, who occasionally smile when they see you instead of avoiding eye contact. Then a man showed up, the only one who talked to us, and asked if we were ready. I said yes, he looked for our waitress and told her we were ready, but she ignored him and continued doing her thing. After 20 minutes of being in the restaurant without any attention from anyone, we got up and left, without water or anything. I think it's very unpleasant and bad service. I don't usually write bad reviews, but I hope the owners or manager see this so they can correct the mistakes.
