Wow! What a hidden gem in the SGV!…read more Both of my parents are from the Caribbean, so finding a local spot that truly gets Caribbean food right is a real treat. My mom ordered the oxtail, and my dad had the curry chicken. They both agreed it was the closest they've had to authentic, home-cooked Caribbean food since leaving home. I also took home a Jamaican beef patty and a chicken patty, and I tried them the next day. They were absolutely delicious! The service was excellent, and the staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming. The restaurant is located in a unique food hall featuring cuisines from around the world, creating a lively, social atmosphere with plenty of energy while still being a comfortable place to enjoy a meal. If you're looking for authentic Caribbean food in the San Gabriel Valley, I highly recommend giving this place a try. You won't be disappointed!

My wife and I were craving for Jamaican patties which we haven't had for a while. A search on Yelp brought us here. It's a humble food stall with just a few decor in the food hall but wow. The patties are packed with flavor and complexity. It's spiced, crumbly, and well textured. It's literally mouth watering thinking about it. We enjoyed it so much we came back the next day to have more and buy some to take home too. Trust me. It's worth trying.

Pastrami sandwich with fries and an unsweetened iced tea First, the customer service at this small spot was great. Even though we ordered to go the cashier brought our drinks and food right to our table. Both sandwiches were top notch and muy delicioso. Cubano sandwich was filled with smoked grilled ham, Juicy roasted pork, cheese, pickles and pressed. It was served with the most amazing garlic aioli. I opted for the banana chips that were light and crispy and a perfect accompaniment to the sandwich. We also ordered a pastrami sandwich with fries. The fries were well seasoned and thin. Pastrami was so delicious however my only gripe is that it needed a touch more mustard. I shared some of my garlic aioli with my partner but hogged the rest for my other half of sandwich. Sandwiches were cooked to order, hot and fresh. The bread was soft with a slight crunch due to it being pressed. It was a very nice change from the usual burger or fried chicken fast food. We can't wait to go back !!

After craving Jamaican food for what feels like forever, I finally decided to search Yelp on my way…read morehome from working in LA and came across The Taste of the Caribbean in Long Beach - and wow, this hit the spot in a way I've been missing for too long. For context, I've always loved Jamaican food and even have family who make incredible, authentic dishes, but I haven't had anything close to that in a year. So my expectations? High. My craving? Even higher. I ordered the jerk chicken dinner with peas & rice and cabbage medley, and some plantains - to go. First off, the service was amazing. The woman who helped me was genuinely warm and welcoming, and you can tell she cares about what she's serving. When I ordered, she asked if I wanted the jerk sauce on the side and made sure I was okay with the spice level when I said no. That attention to detail matters. The food came out quickly (it was mid-afternoon and not busy), and everything stayed warm all the way home--which is always a win for takeout. Now let's talk about the food: The portion was generous, the flavors were on point, and everything tasted fresh. The jerk chicken had that perfect smoky, spicy kick - exactly what I was hoping for. The rice and peas and cabbage medley were a great balance to the heat, and the plantains were sweet and perfectly cooked. I did notice another review complaining about the spice level being too high... and honestly, I had to laugh a little. Have you had jerk chicken before? It's supposed to be spicy - that's the whole point. Personally, that comment is part of what made me choose this place, and it delivered. If you don't like spice, jerk might not be your thing - but I'm sure there are milder options if you ask. Bonus: they offer online ordering and delivery through Uber Eats and Postmates, which makes it even easier to get your fix. Overall, this place brought back the flavors I've been missing for so long. I'll absolutely be back - and probably sooner rather than later.

And am I glad I followed my spirit in this one! When I pulled up I was greeted with fragrant scent of spice then the doors opens to deep aromas of jerk and curry! Bag was ready and piping hot! And I must tell you it was the longest 14.6 miles home ever with all those spices slapping me in the face! We ordered 2 Dinners and a side. Dinner one was Oxtails with gravy the second was Curry Chicken. Each dinner comes with rice and peas, a cabbage mix and plantains. Along with a side of jerk chicken. The oxtails were delicious. Be sure to ask for heavy gravy as that's kind of light (Wish I had asked for that on the Curry). The flavor was so deep I flew back to my island retreat in my mind!! I am know as the bland food eater so the curry and oxtails were at my spice max. I enjoyed the fullness of the spices and even appreciated the heat that came with it . I polished off the remaining rice and peas later in the evening (glad I ask for additional gravy) and I think the flavor may have been a bit better after settling at room temp, as I I was staring at the plate like why isn't there more!! I did bravely taste the jerk and it too was a very Carribean scent (although too spicy for me personally) the flyover was rich and chicken was moist so that a plus and my partner gobbled it up so tells me that the item was good. The atmosphere is usually chill, which is another reason I enjoyed coming here so often. The food is genuinely delicious. I've had the salmon, and I'm a big fan of the wings and the juices. I used to come here regularly, and I liked the place enough that I even chose them to cater an event for my job. I gave them a specific headcount and explained how much food we would need. They assured me that everything would be taken care of, so I trusted them and put a lot of hype behind the restaurant. Unfortunately, the catering experience was a major disappointment. Not only was our order late, but there was barely enough food for everyone. After being clear about the number of people attending and trusting their team to properly prepare for the event, it felt like they completely dropped the ball. I had recommended and hyped up this place, only for the experience to be subpar and for several things to go wrong. It honestly felt like they played in my face, especially after assuring me that everything was handled. I would have given this place five stars based on the food and my previous experiences, but that catering situation left such a sour taste in my mouth that I haven't returned in quite some time. Loyalty should mean something, and it's difficult to continue supporting a business when you don't feel respected or valued as a customer. The food is still delicious, and I truly enjoyed this place for a long time. But after that experience, I don't think I'll be coming back. I'm sorry, because I really wanted to continue supporting them.

Wanting to give them another chance, I ordered again this morning. I got the jerk chicken special with rice and peas and cabbage, expecting a fresh, flavorful meal. Sadly, the experience was very disappointing. The jerk chicken was extremely tough and dry, the rice and peas tasted old, and the cabbage appeared spoiled& had a terrible smell (not edible) I spit it right out my mouth. The entire meal was not fresh and was simply reheated in a microwave. I eat Jamaican food regularly, so I know what fresh Jamaican cuisine should taste like. I called the restaurant to address my concerns and hopefully find a resolution. Instead of listening or attempting to make things right, I was repeatedly told that the food was fresh. There was no effort to resolve the issue or acknowledge my experience as a customer. I don't normally leave negative reviews, but after two disappointing experiences in less than 24 hours, I felt it was important to share. Hopefully this helps others make an informed decision before ordering.

Stopped by this restaurant towards the end of the day on a a Saturday…read more Experience: since I'm not local, I called first to make sure they had oxtails and jerk chicken. The gentleman who answered, was dry and quick. Damn near hung the phone up in my face to get off the phone so fast. Upon arrival, said gentleman was sitting at one of the dining tables. It was empty inside of customers. I greeted him with an excited smile and he softened his disposition. Now, if you know Jamaicans, being fair I wasn't overly surprised at his stoicism and seriousness. The restaurant: There was only the remaining patties in the display case. Outside of that, a pretty empty place. Doesn't look like a bustling and meticulously decorated restaurant. It's cold and cafeteria like. There's no smell of deliciousness in the air and again nothing to see. No pictures of the food, nothing. Even the kitchen was so clean and closed down, it looks like the food is prepared elsewhere and brought in. Service: the gentleman wasn't rude. He just didn't offer any advise, ask any questions.. nothing. But as I was waiting on my plate, another young lady walked in. She called in as well and received the same dry and quick energy when she called. But when she walked into the establishment, clearly she's a regular. He lit up like a Xmas tree. She was such a pleasant and beautifully spirited woman, she gave her opinion of the gold (she said it was good). The food: Reminder, I was basically going off of the pictures on Yelp. My boyfriend talking about if the Mac n cheese looks good get him some. My response, I can't see a dang thing! The regular customer was surprised they had Mac n cheese (mind you). I ordered a large Oxtail plate. Wasn't asked about sides at all. Basically giving I'm getting what he's got. And I ordered a large jerk chicken plate. When the gentleman began bagging up my food, before he tied it up, when I saw him try and give me (1) small ahss thing of jerk sauce.. I had to stop him to look before he tied it up. Sure enough, chicken dry as hell. For dang near half a chicken with some dry rice and peas (1) jerk sauce?? At the price point of each plate (over $25) . I ask for more sauce, I said, if I bring this home to my boyfriend he's going to have a fit! He gave me one more. I insisted another and he was getting ready to deny it, but ok told him I'll pay for it. I said there's no way my BF is eating that dry. I was so caught up in making sure the jerk was right, I didn't peep everything else too deep. I bought (2) patties as well (beef). $70 to feed (2) with large plates and a patty. The Oxtails: small oxtails, a good portion. They were ok. Some pieces were a little tough and dry, let me know this was definitely the bottom of the pot. Had they had Mac n cheese (they were out) I would have opted for that over rice and peas. Only because most places don't do it right. Again, it's end of the day.. Both my plates definitely got the burnt bottom. My boyfriend had more of the crispy parts than I. But definitely dry and sitting. BUT not bad actually. I threw some of this Carribean hot sauce I have on it, turned it up. The oxtails: 6.5/10, The cabbage a total NO (0/10) . The beef patty: 9/10 (good ). The rice and peas: 6.5/10 The jerk chicken... as a disclaimer, Jamaica is my choice vacation spot, jerk being a staple upon visits. So my idea of what jerk should taste and look like is high. Do not expect your chicken to come to you already sauced. It's dry, like it's straight off the grill. The chicken was tender, and had a really good flavor. Without the jerk sauce. Now does it give me that taste the grills in Jamaica give the chicken. No. Being fair, it has a really good Smokey grill to it. IF you have your own jerk sauce use it. The sauce they provide the texture wasn't saucy more like applesauce texture. It wasn't spicy and just not jerkie. The jerk: 7.5/10 Last, I was irritated I didn't pay attention. The menu I could have swore said , festivals come with the plates. Instead we were given (1) plantain each. That had me hot. Overall: 6.5/10
