Fantastic food in a lovely setting! This is an order at the counter and then get your food delivered to your table kind of place. Three of us had sandwiches.... one tuna salad with tomatoes and avocado on pumpernickel, one roasted turkey with cold slaw and Swiss cheese on pumpernickel, and one grilled pepper jack cheese with spinach on multi-grain. They were all delicious (although I found the tuna salad a bit on the drippy side). The prices were fair.... especially with the obvious high quality of the ingredients. I have to say we have loved this place for decades. We stop everytime we are in Ithaca which is every other month. Last time we ate in and the otder was wrong, it took some time to get so we just ate it. Just stopped for bread and breakfast sandwich, waited 22 minutes for the sandwich, det on rt 89 and it is wrong. How di you get wrong ingredients in signature sandwich? The system for take out is illogical. The bagels are not great. And the word in Ithaca is that the employer does not treat his employees well here, or in his other businesses in town. Although the menu is extensive and every food description sounds delicious, Ithaca bakery doesn't deliver on quality. Food is just okay. What brings me here is their asinine, and at this point dangerous, way of handling customers indoors. Everything is very disorganized, there are too many signs and not enough staff instructing you where to go. Customers are forced to approach one another to ask about the bakery's very specific, and not at all efficient, way of ordering and paying for food. This would be annoying pre-pandemic, but asking customers to mill about in circles inside is absolutely maddening now. This same review goes for their sister store, Collegetown Bagels. A large, diverse selection of baked goods and foods to choose from. Their bagels are stellar. I bought one for breakfast, and ended up going to get one to eat later that afternoon. The jalapeno bagel is my recommendation. A nice spicy flavor, but not overpowering. Paired with one of their carefully-crafted cream cheeses... yum. They get three stars because my dad didn't exactly care for his breakfast platter that he got from the buffet. He ended up eating everything, but was generally disappointed. Stopped in because their website advertised Mexican Corn Chowder, but were told upon arrival that that was yesterday's special instead. Ok, their website isn't updated, no biggie; they had plenty of other options, from pastries to sandwiches. We arrived at 12:43 and were hoping to get a quick bite to eat before continuing on our road trip... we ordered 2 sandwiches to go and didn't get them until 1:21, 38 min later. To make matters worse, we had purchased a metal straw to drink our smoothie with, thinking we would support the bakery's environmental efforts-- and after having sipped away for several minutes, we watched with horror as a customer accidentally toppled the container of straws, scattering straws all across the dirty carpet, and a bakery worker shoved them back into the container without washing them. It made us feel really gross about continuing to drink our smoothie, but the damage was already done. The straw was also far too thin to easily drink the viscous smoothie -- I would recommend buying your metal straw elsewhere. We ordered a PB&J smoothie, but it was too heavy on the raspberry and consequently rather sour, overpowering the peanut butter. When we FINALLY got our sandwiches after a ridiculous wait (Soho croissant and Anne of Danby), the Soho croissant was half cold inside -- unpleasant. The only good thing about our experience was the apple puff. It was tasty and the right size. But after eating the puff, two sandwiches, and a peanut butter smoothie, we were still really hungry. I ordered 2 bagels for pick up, was told it was about a 10-15min wait. I drove to the store and waited longer than 15 minuets, from the time I ordered. While I'm waiting, I hear everyone else's name on the speaker but not mine, how odd. I then received a phone call from one of the employees and was informed that "they did not have enough bread to make the other sandwich." However, one had been made and one simply required a bread alternative. While not supplying me with adequate solutions, I had to take it upon my self to inquire about other bread options. What could have been the best solution, was to speak with me face-to-face, so we could solve the issue at hand. The phone call concluded with agreeing to a whole wheat substitution for the single sandwich. After the pain staking phone call, we ended up waiting another 15 minuets for a bread substitution (wait a second, isn't this a bakery??). It then seemed that the many patrons behind us, had magically been taken care of and what was left of the bakery was what felt like a few crumbs and too hangry customers. As we waited, we couldn't help but notice a few employees doing what I like to call busy work (ie. refilling the sugar packet container and cleaning the windows). As previous customers to the business, we figured we would give the staff the benefit of the doubt, however our patience was running thin. We waited and waited for the M.C. which never ensued. We decided to take our energy and money elsewhere and save ourselves the $27. *33 minutes past* we call the bakery to inform them to cancel our order. Low and behold the sandwich's had been made! Oh that's too bad Ithaca Bakery I'd rather not. And I'll leave this here, after expressing our grave disappointment in the actions displayed, we were given cheek over the phone and the phone call ended with a careless "whatever" and an abrupt click. So many sandwiches to choose from! I liked the variety of sandwiches on the menu, plus they had a "make your own" section. Either I just didn't see it or they don't have it but I wish they had a paper menu for all of their drinks! Being noobs, we felt like we were totally holding up the line and had to ask a lot of questions that might not have been needed had we been able to see a menu upfront. I got a vegan sandwich. Wow this place was a bit of a maze. There are various stations for ordering depending on what you want but honestly just seems to cause a lot of unnecessary confusion. I walked up to order and asked for a standard breakfast burrito. The girl was kind and offered lots of suggestions, unfortunately none of which matched what I wanted. I ended up getting a croissant with bacon, egg and cheese. We then moved to another line to order coffee and grab a ginger coffee. It was busy and they had only one restroom open, needless to say another line to stand in. Our foot took 20+ minutes to come out. When I finally unwrapped my croissant, it tasted good but it was so small and thin, quite disappointing. I'm a bit sad to see this location become so commercialized. My friend and I stopped here after visiting some of the local waterfalls. We thought it would just be a small bakery to get some baked goods and maybe a cup of coffee. This place is AWESOME. I got a caprese sandwich on homemade foccacia bread. It was perfect tomato/mozzarella ratio and just enough olive oil. There were sample eclairs to taste that were so creamy and delicious. We went here last year when we were in Ithaca, and we were happy enough with the place to return today. Today's experience was bad. It was not crowded when we entered on a Sunday morning. We ordered promptly and were given a number to put on our table for the order to be delivered. We ordered two cappuccinos, a smoothie, a cold sandwich, and two breakfast sandwiches that required preparation on the grill. The cappuccinos were delivered very soon after we sat down, and then we waited and waited. About 25 minutes later we got our three sandwiches. The smoothie was still to be delivered. We had earlier asked the person whose job it was to deliver food to the tables what had happened with our order. Our inordinately long wait didn't seem to register. I had enough when the smoothie was still missing and went up to the drink counter. There was the smoothie my son had ordered, but labeled with some other name. They had been calling that name, and no one had come to claim the drink. Why our order number wasn't on the drink and why it was labeled with some other name was unclear. It points to a possible problem with the order system. Next, my husband and I realized that the cold item we had bitten into in our warm breakfast sandwiches was the sausage patty. We're not talking lukewarm, but cold, as in right out of the refrigerator. The outside was warm from the griddle, but the patty was mostly cold inside. My husband took the sandwiches to the grill, and new ones were made. They were actually wonderful, but my husband said he does not intend to return. As for myself, I'd be inclined to return and give them another chance, but I have to admit that there seemed to be serious issues today with their being a functional restaurant. Oh Ithaca Bakery: you could be so much better! On the positive side: the coffee drinks and baked goods are mostly pretty good (though the baked goods seem stuck in the 1990s). And their house-made gravlax is wonderful and the whitefish salad is as it should be. They also have a nice selection of high-end olive oils, jams, chips etc. On the negative side: the sandwiches are overpriced and often disappointing. I had a vegetarian sandwich once that had what seemed like $.75 worth of vegetables on a gigantic roll for $8.50. The food in the hot bar is almost always dried out and overcooked. I went to pick up a few things at Walgreens, then headed to Ithaca Bakery. I waited a few minutes in line and I was told they are working on it. If you haven't already noticed, I'm a pessimist. I know I have a bad habit of looking for the negative instead of finding the positive. So there's that. I'm not making any excuses for myself. Just putting it out there. So in light of the above I'm about to write a somewhat negative review about Ithaca's beloved bakery. Partly because it deserves it, partly because I'm in a bad mood. My favorite part about the Ithaca Bakery is what it used to be. You know, back in the '70s and '80s, when they literally only sold fresh bread at a reasonable price. Present day, I have a love/hate relationship with this place. For every chocolate croissant that I love, there's a mediocre hot bar. For every one of my toasted salt bagels with cream cheese, lox and capers, there is crappy daily soup. For every whimsical "LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLAAAAAAAAAURAAAAAAA!" that is sung into the microphone to tell me that my order is ready, there is a pretentious snotbag taking lunch orders on the phone. I recently admitted to myself that my favorite "Brooklyn Bagel" is indeed mostly made up of freaking FAKE EGGS. This infuriates me! How can an establishment that continually toots the locally grown horn serve me fucking Sysco eggs that come in a god-knows-how-old-gigantic container!? Ithaca Bakery I beg you, get rid of this crap. I can't be the only person this bothers. I guess this is more a rant than a review. I have lived in Ithaca for 20+ years and have eaten at the IB many many times. At this point I think it is out of habit rather than for the food quality. I resent being served microwaved eggs. The food consistency is spotty and the quality does not reflect the price. look at the prepared food in the case, does it look fresh and inviting? or more like leftovers? I'm not sure why there is so much hype over Ithaca Bakery. The bagels are pretty good. The hummus as well. The list ends here, for me. I otherwise find the food to be just OK. I've tried a few dishes (really trying to let Ithaca Bakery grown on me), most recently a tofu scramble sandwich. I had to douse it in ketchup before I found it edible. I brought my parents here, and they were disappointed their eggs were made in a microwave. I can't blame them. The prepared (vegan) food items I've tried have been nothing but underwhelming and bland. The bread is just so-so. Ithaca Bakery is far too crowded for my liking, and I just can't see why.
