A fairly quick review of my visit of a local spot recommended to me. I was visiting Syracuse this weekend for my nursing clinicals with my university at Upstate Hospital. Last day, my clinical instructor recommended a spot to order for our lunch break and that was Collegetown Bagels. This was a first coming from Texas and I am always open to try new places. Located on Syracuse University's campus, which I had no idea how close it was, we walked over there as a group. I decided to go with the Renwick Reuben, PB&Joe, and a cannoli. I thought this was a good representation of what New York is for breakfast/lunch. The Reuben was flavorful, lots of pastrami, tangy sauce, and rye bread was spot on. The PB &Joe I would have had it by itself. It really is like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich thrown into a coffee drink. The cannoli is a must, can't forget about it. Overall my visit to Collegetown Bagels was a great one. I definitely would find myself stopping in if I was local, working closely with by at the hospital or even a University of Syracuse student. During a visit to Cornell, a colleague said we had to go to Collegetown Bagels and try the rosemary bagel (spoiler: I did not need up trying that one lol) It's about a 7 or 8 minute walk from the Statler Hotel, which was convenient for a quick trip over. We arrived around 12:30pm on a Friday and it was pretty busy, but by the time our group all got our food (there were about 7 of us) there were a lot less people inside. Normally I like to look at menus before visiting places and I do wish I did. I found myself very overwhelmed once I walked inside. There were just so many choices that sounded so good! You order at the farthest station, then work your way towards the front to pay. I ended up ordering the Parisian and an apple cider donut. The donut was good and the sandwich was very tasty. Probably the best bagel place I've ever had. The service was quick, the staff gave great recommendations and although the menu sees complex it's very easy to navigate. You honestly can't go wrong with anything you get. We were visiting and went every morning for 4 days straight, time after time our tastebuds were blown away with great flavor. Collegetown Bagel is exactly that, a cool College Town Bagel shop. Very friendly and helpful young staff, mostly likely college kids. The place has a great coffee shop vibe to it. Bagel was good, had the honey walnut cream cheese and it was as good as you can find anywhere. Could have used a bigger schmear but not complaining. We stopped in for breakfast for our last morning in town. For a Sunday morning, there wasn't too much of a crowd to fight through. I ordered a whole wheat "Long Island" (known to us down staters and out of staters as an 'everything') with whitefish salad and a hot Americano. The bagel came out pretty quickly but something was lost in the mix: the whole wheat everything was a whole wheat plain. While the whitefish was nice and pleasantly smoky, the bagel was proof that you just can't find a good NYC style bagel outside of NYC or the suburbs: it was too chewy and lacking a body of flavour. read more

The single most overrated and overhyped "local" business in Ithaca. The rushed, impersonal, unpleasant atmosphere of a corporate chain (they have multiple locations in Ithaca & Syracuse), with all the problems of a small business. Disorganized, poorly trained staff who don't know how to correctly make espresso drinks (or don't care), and very overpriced sandwiches on tough chewy "bagels." I've been many times and am each time more disappointed than the last. I recently stopped in for a quick coffee and although the cafe was nearly empty, I waited 17 minutes for a cappuccino (made with the remainder of the milk left in the steaming pitcher from another drink). Wish this chain would just close down and stop taking business from the actually good and actually local cafes. read more

This is the most perfect spot for a chill hangout. It's so close to Cornell's campus, so quite walkable, and there's so much outdoor seating. They have delicious beverages + bagels, as well as pastries inside. First time visiting. Very confusing process. I paid for a breakfast sandwich and two drinks. The cashier did not mention that I needed to keep the receipt. I got the drinks with no issue. After waiting, my name was called for the sandwich. I went to counter and the employee told me that I needed a receipt. I indicated that I no longer had it. I stepped out to see if I can find it and even tried looking through the trash. I did not find it and went back in to let them know and showed that I was charged through my credit card statement. That did not work. After arguing with the employee, another employee indicated that they just have to look it up. Why didn't the first employee tell me before i looked through the trash? Why wasn't two form of evidences sufficient? I never got the sandwich. I felt I was treated like a criminal. Yet, they took my money without ever providing me with the sandwich. Knew I had to stop by because of how iconic CTB is in the Ithaca community. On a Saturday morning, it wasn't too crowded and I was able to order and receive my food in a timely manner. I ordered an iced sugar free vanilla latte and roundhouse bagel. It had to be the best coffee I had in a while and the bagel was delicious. I love the roundhouse because it comes with bacon, egg, hash brown, and sausage on a sea salt bagel. It was definitely a bit heavy for me, but I appreciated the large portions. Ambiance was great with a bustling atmosphere where people were grabbing their morning coffees. The baristas were also very friendly and helped my friend with a request when needed. I used to love CTB when I attended Cornell 15 years ago. I came back to find CTB the only place in College town still there. The place is twice as big now, but the bagels and sandwiches are still incredible, but the ordering system much faster. Same great good without the wait! First time visiting the "new" location. The place seems smaller, but seemed pretty efficient at getting orders and moving people. We ordered two sandwiches - New Yorker and Buffalo st. Buffalo was kind of a letdown. It was fine, but it wasn't anything special. Good fried chicken tender smothered with hot sauce and lettuce on a nice bread. Felt like it was missing something. New Yorker was better I felt, and both sandwiches were pretty good size but not too big. Also got some drinks and it came out in ok time. I think the old location had more charm than this one. First time at the new location. The $5 HH beers 4-6pm everyday is a great deal. That is where the good news stops. I wanted to love this. I have lots of fond memories of CTB. In the 4 days I was in Ithaca, I stopped by here nearly half a dozen times. I had breakfasts, snacks, and drinks. As I said, drinks were great, but everything else was mediocre at best. Service was friendly, but not very attentive. Multiple times I had to walk around to the various parts of the counter to try to find someone who was available to help out. Again, very friendly, but I think the layout spreads the staff too thin, or they were understaffed. On the topic of food... my wife got a muffin, it was way too sweet, the texture was not nice, and it was bizarrely served in a plastic cup. On a separate visit I had a bagel. It was ok, but the bagel itself was not very good. Also, got a panini that was very not good. Texture was wet on wet, and the quality of the chicken was bad. Like the pre cooked chicken you can buy in a plastic bag at Walmart. Not fresh tasting, not a nice consistency. Needless to say, it didn't live up to my prior experiences. Perhaps nostalgia is to blame. Will try it again, but need to plan to find more places to eat next time I'm in town. read more

Wow, what a change from when I was at Cornell many years ago. Now across the street in the bottom floor of Sheldon Court in Collegetown. The coffee and food were still amazing. We even ordered sandwiches to pick up for the ride home. Great patio space to sit with our dog. Be prepared for a wait. The line can get long and crew seemed overwhelmed on a Sunday morning. That speaks to how beloved the spot is, though. My favorites were the maple bacon scone and Parisian sandwich. We were driving through Ithaca and wanted lunch. While there are MANY great looking Chinese and Thai places, my ladies wanted a sandwich, and we settled on this easy to find place. Regrets came later when it took 30 minutes to make 2 sandwiches, and when my wife's Caprese sandwich was a near train wreck. I show the attached anatomy of her sandwich, but even that doesn't do it justice. It was basically hunks of cheese, liberally oiled, put between two slices of some thin bun, with a tomato garnish. I am not exaggerating in the picture: there was a SINGLE tiny shred of basil... about half the size of a dime... right in the middle. You couldn't even see it, let alone taste it. I don't have a picture because my wife was so hungry she ate half before realizing the comical proportions,. I don't see myself in Ithaca anytime soon, but I would DEFINITELY avoid this place if I ever was. I would also like to express my newfound disdain for this type of "we have a million sandwiches with clever names which makes it impossible to order" delis. Near where I live we have Zingerman's deli, which does the same thing. I get it...it's "fun". Why name a sandwich a "reuben" or a "rachael"...which are established types of sandwiches...when you can call them "The Erma Bombeck" or "Danny B's Fave" and confuse the hell out of people. Yes, but I was expecting avocado toast. I don't think this kind of bread was an adequate vessel for avocado toast as the spread weighed it down and made it soggy. This looked like something I could've made at home in two minutes. However, it did come quickly and my dad ordered a bagel sandwich, which seemed more exciting.
