Located in the middle of the DeWitt Mall, the cafe features uneven flooring, a bathroom key on a soup laddle, fish tanks with goldfish and guppies, yes, quite good food. They have a handful of staff and what looks like a tiny kitchen. Even so, they are very warm and welcoming. Since the Carriage House on Stewart Avenue has been long closed, I decided to get the cafe's French Toast. It came out nice and hot, sprinkled with powdered sugar, and a side of maple syrup and butter. The crisp exterior gave way to a moist fluffy eggy interior. Much yum. Bonus points: they can also offer French toast in a gluten free variation. My wife opted for the Potato Pile, which was a plate with a pile of potatoes, dressed, along with their homemade kimchi, and eggs. The potatoes were great. To say we were disappointed is an understatement. Firstly, we waited an hour and a half to sit at a table. This wouldn't have been a problem if we hadn't been sat at a 2 top (with 3 people) that had been open for 30 minutes prior to us being sat. It also wouldn't have been a problem if the food was good. Our table ordered the 2 omelettes (the kimchi and a build your own), the wich-wich sandwich, and the french toast. The sandwich bread wasn't toasted, which just made it a very soggy meal. The french toast was raw, cut so thick it wasn't surprising that the inside of each slice was soggy with uncooked egg. The rosemary potatoes were... fine; obviously pre-cooked and just reheated because they were not remotely crispy or particularly fresh tasting. The real gripe was with the kimchi omelette. It was fine going down, not overly flavorful despite having a very flavorful ingredient. However, it was not fine on the way up. And trust, it came back up. Spent the rest of the day sick and throwing up. The only highlight was the coffee; the brown sugar and spice latte was great, would return for that and only that. I like Cafe Dewitt's creativity! the Kai omelette had a distinctive taste because of the kimchi, with a slightly tangy, spicy, salty fermented taste that went really well with the eggs and mushrooms. The chives on top give it both personality and slight freshness that you need with the kimchi. I also appreciate that they don't skimp on the ingredients either. The fish tank around the dining area reminds me of Chinese restaurants (except, of course, those fish are not for eating lol). It's an open floor plan, and it's fun to be eating in an open area surrounded by the indie stores. I'd go back to try their other things! read more

Don't let the humble location of this cafe fool you, this is some of the best food I've had in Ithaca. I wasn't expecting much of this super-casual almost pop-up-like cafe in the entryway of the Dewitt mall, but holy shit. I got the farmhouse breakfast; scrambled eggs with cheddar cheese, rosemary potatoes, and sourdough toast with jam. My girlfriend got an egg white omelet with ham, onions, and tomato chutney on top. Everything is locally sourced, and it's all incredible. Another thing I really liked about this place is that they have a service charge wrapped into the price of the food. More places should do this! Service staff shouldn't have to rely on tips to survive, and the food wasn't really any more expensive than anything else in the area. We'll definitely be stopping by again next time we're in the area. read more

Dropped in here on a Friday morning at the start of Labor Day weekend shortly after opening. There is no designated outdoor seating right now but the indoor seating is spaced out nicely and well divided between tables. Even though it is indoors, the mall is pretty spacious and being there early on weekday meant we had the place to ourselves effectively. The staff were very helpful and took our orders at the counter and brought food to us at our table. The menu was a little bit curtailed the day we were there and it sounded like they have cut it back a little over the last few months. It looks like a lot of the orders were for take away which was being run smoothly. The food we ordered was solid. I got a pretty standard egg breakfast and my +1 got a fantastic sandwich that mixed sweet and savory. Overall, solid food at good prices with a public health conscious and friendly staff. In the same building as the legendary vegetarian restaurant, Moosewood. But does not deserve to be on the same continent with Moosewood, let alone the same building. It is an all purpose breakfast and lunch place. The positive feature about it (which gives it three stars rather than two) is that it is in a charming location - along a basement corridor next to a cool bookstore, cool hippie things to buy for your house stores and farther down, a cool folk music guitar store with well chosen cds. So eating there feels literary, suave and countercultural. You had better be anti-materialistic too - because the food ain't great, A cafe au lait had old stale coffee and had to be sent back. A croissant was indifferent. Soft boiled eggs were boiled just to the point of inconvenience, where the shell adhered to the egg, making it hard to open, while the yolk ran everywhere making the egg half inedible. Service was nuisancesome - with the waiter asking several times if he could take my plate - even with my still-being-eaten-breakfast clearly on the plate - and him repeating the nuisance calls even after I asked him to let me finish before coming back. (For the record, the restaurant was barely 20% full so it was not like he desperately needed my table.) There has gotta be a better breakfast someplace else. read more

I've been here twice, and the first time was far better than the second. Nothing's wrong with the service, the servers are all very friendly, my qualms are with the food. The first time I ate here, I had the Tex Mex, which was amazing. It was fresh and delicious and came with so much food, and the bread was the best I'd tasted since working in France a year ago. (In fact, I couldn't finish the plate, so I bagged the bread and took it with me.) The second time, I ordered the rosemary garlic potatoes and the lamb merguez potatoes. Both were disappointing. The potatoes had an odd taste--perhaps excessive rosemary?--with no hint of garlic, and several of the pieces were completely burnt on the bottom. The merguez was even more of a let-down. I hate wasting food but couldn't bring myself to finish it, it was just so fatty that my stomach was unhappy afterwards. I've had merguez (granted, in an authentic Maghrébin restaurant in France), and it was juicy with a delightful blend of spices. It tasted nothing like condensed fat. We came to experience Moosewood, but had an outstanding meal at Cafe Dewitt. The Moose was closed for an impromptu staff meeting so it was out great fortune to change plans at the last minute. One order for the 'Sophia' (see menu pic) and one for the buger special from the board (see pic of menu). Both beautifully presented with fresh, crisp vegetables, generous serving size and great price. Be aware, CASH only. Servers were friendly and informed and provided local information for us, travelers from out of town. The owner was on site. The chefs are humble and appreciate hearing if you enjoyed your meal. If you're in Ithaca, don't make the mistake of not eating here. Some of the friendliest employees I've ever met and I love it's located in the middle of a strip mall. My boyfriend and I each had an omelette. Mine was their sandwich special - apple sausage hash, spinach, manchego, and onion - as an omelette. And my boyfriend got the omelette frances, their special of the day. These were the best omelette we've ever had in our life. So fluffy and like little pillows filled with the perfect mix of ingredients. Blended so nicely and didn't fall apart at all. YUM. Hazlenut pesto was also bomb. This place is mediocre-at-best. I have been to Cafe DeWitt more times than I can count at this point and I feel like this is one of the fairest reviews that I could give.  My most recent visit solidified a lot of the feelings that I've previously held about Cafe DeWitt but this specific experience confirmed that firmed that I won't be going back to Cafe DeWitt anytime in the foreseeable future. Overall: The service is quite slow, you can almost always expect to wait in line, and if you show up past 11:30 you can guarantee that at least one of the specials for the day on the weekend will be unavailable...if you show up past 12:30 sometimes regular brunch menu items are unavailable. This Visit: Definitely solidified just how mediocre this place really is. From the moment I stepped into the line to the time I left I was so uncomfortable and frustrated it took everything in my power not to just get up and leave. There were about four other people in front of me in line and within a couple of minutes they were all seated. Considering there were several tables open I figured I would be seated next. However when the hostess came to ask for my name to seat me her response was "it's going to be a 15 to 20-minute wait"when I asked why she said almost verbatim  "...because there are no small tables available and we like to reserve the bigger tables for bigger groups, so you can leave if you'd like instead of waiting..." At that point I should have left but I stayed because I was very hungry and I already made the effort of walking to my local bank to get cash out because the restaurant is cash only... so I was committed to getting food from there. About 15 minutes pass and she comes up to me and says "do you plan on staying here long? If not I can seat you at a big table... otherwise you're going to still have to wait for a small table." I was so confused by her question and put off by her demeanor I looked at her and said "I'm fine waiting as I stated before." Eventually I was seated in my order was taken but when my food was brought to me it was the wrong order. Apparently my waiter thought that I asked for two full meals in addition to the appetizer I added to my order later. This problem could have easily been solved if he had just repeated my order back to me which he never did. The order I did intend on eating was quite delicious and I was told that I could take the other meal to go as they did not want to waste food. I went for lunch on a very snowy Saturday. It was slower (I'm assuming because of the snow) so I was seated immediately. The coffee was hot and delicious (it is Gimme which I enjoy). I got the Eggs Florentine, two poached eggs, spinach and hollandaise sauce, served on focaccia bread. I was blown away. The eggs were cooked perfectly, the yolks were runny and the whites cooked. The star of this show was the hollandaise. I have never had real hollandaise sauce before and now I know what I was missing. It was rich, buttery and velvety smooth. It tasted wonderful. The dish came with the perfect amount to coat the eggs and dip the bread in. I was satisfied, yet not over stuffed which was nice because I had things to do that afternoon. The service was seriously slow - despite the amount of eye contact I made w the idle servers just hanging out watching. They don't take "day of" reservations, only for days in the future. The best brunch place in Ithaca. The food here is simple but elegant. They try to source their ingredients locally when possible and they even list the farms on the menu. The locally sourced bacon and ham are delicious. Must get: the Rosemary Garlic Roasted Potatoes. It's part of the Chef's Plate or you can order it as a side. The ingredients are simple but somehow it's so much better than all the other roasted potatoes I've tried. It has great full flavors and the potatoes are cooked just right, not too dry or too mushy. On the Specials one morning, I tried this toasted garlic-braised kale and ham sandwich with chevre. It was to die for. I'm sad it's not a regular item on the menu. Other than that, I have also tried the crab cakes. It was pretty good and I like that many of their dishes came with a good side salad. I've only been here for brunch on the weekdays when it's nice and quiet and you can get seated right away. Took over 40 minutes for our food to come out and not once did anyone ask if we wanted more coffee or beverages or come to check on us during that time. Food comes out and mediocre and underwhelming. Server asked if we wanted more coffee or hot sauce. Said yes to both and were there another 20 minutes at least and he never came back. Tried to get another server's attention for coffee and were completely ignored. Only 12 or so tables and a fairly small menu so no excuse for the atrocious service. read more

Cafe Dewitt is one of my favorite places to grab breakfast in Ithaca. Depending what you order it is decently priced. You will not get an extensive amount of food, but the taste and quality of each dish makes it worth it. I have only eaten breakfast here so I cannot give my opinion on there lunch. My only complaint is that the service is not the best. On each occasion I have been there I often end up waiting 10-15 minutes before I even got water or coffee. The girlfriend and I had gone for a late-breakfast at 10am this past Monday and were more or less delighted that we had. We had seemed to have hit one of the "magical" lulls when we went since there weren't very many people at all, and we definitely did not have to stand in a line to be seated (as instructed by the signs), as some other reviews commented about the place tending to be jacked all the time. I guess we got lucky. The menu wasn't exactly what one could call "expansive" but they seem to put an interesting twist on every dish--at least for their breakfast choices. I had ordered the Farmhouse: 2 eggs, toast with jam, and homestyle rosemary red potatoes. Oh how I do love an interesting-yet-simple potato dish, and, those were by-far some of the best and most surprising breakfast potatoes I've eaten. Very unique. My favorite go-to brunch spot in Ithaca! I'm always harassing my friends on Saturday or Sunday to go to Dewitt. I don't think I've ever ordered from the menu, I always choose one of the specialty omelettes on the blackboard, and they never fail! Always delicious and fresh. I will say though, I do believe the serving sizes have gotten slightly smaller between my freshman year and my junior year... The hot chocolate is a treat as well, rich and amazingly comforting on those cold Ithaca mornings, if you're ok with the price. Their coffee is a good morning pick me up as well -- smooth and I believe it is Gimme Coffee, which I am personally impartial to as a CS major who has gotten many cups of Gimme from the cafe in Gates Hall. The ambiance is great, it's cozy and familiar (I love the refurbished school-turned-mall look of the entire area). Get there early if you can (9 on Saturday or 10 on Sunday) or there will be a slight wait! The service isn't perfect but they are an extremely busy/popular spot. Slightly random tidbit: my friends who gulp down their water at meals don't love the small glasses, but they refill fairly often. read more

We just wanted some carbs..... We started out with this busy looking cafe by waiting for about 50 minutes while we watched brunch items getting crossed off the list left and right. They were running out of food and we were nervous! As we sat down we had our hearts and minds set of Huevos Rancheros. After all - it was 1 or maybe 3 items left on the menu. I wish I could give them a 5 star review for their food, because it is truly great, however their service leaves so much to be desired that I can't in good conscious. It's not that anyone that works there is bad at their job, far from it these are some of the best waiters in town, it's that the management seems to have made specific decisions that negatively affects the restaurant going experience. There are never enough servers on duty so even when it is half full you can end up waiting twenty minutes just to order, all the while having your water refilled half a dozen times because they have decided that the best thing for atmosphere is to have glasses that contain about a thimbleful of water. So, the pros first: coffee is always strong and good, wait isn't terrible for a party of one or two, price isn't terrible, and it's a nice place to go for a quiet breakfast alone (there are plenty of small tables) The not so great: sometimes the servers aren't terribly attentive. It took about 10 after getting my coffee for someone to take my order. Same with the check- after waiting for it to arrive, I was waiting another ten minutes for someone to take it and bring back change. It was a busy Sunday, but it didn't exactly make me feel taken care of. The food- the specials always sound good and look good, and they come out quickly, but they're almost never hot- which is odd, since the kitchen is so close to the dining room. None of the cheese in my omelet was melted today, and my eggs Benedict a week or two ago was similarly lukewarm, on stale toast to boot. I want to give this place another chance, maybe try the sweeter side of the breakfast menu, but really, I would just be happy if my food was hot by the time it got to me. read more
