I had a Grub-Hub delivery of a Bowl chowder and 2 Kid's shrimp meals. I was impressed with the delivery but not with the food. The high stars was the chowder and quick delivery.However, one of the fries in Kid's meal was very poor. They looked old and unappealing. I go into the actual Ivar's and never had fries like this. We usually do the Tanker and fries and fish are great. But today appetites were smaller. And I was very disappointed with the low quality of the fries. I am still happy with chowder and it was hot. I actually like the chowder better anyway. But things are pricey these days. So I expect definitely quality food if we will be expected to pay more for these deliveries. This is forgivable and please continue to serve quality chowder and definitely do not send out poor fries (chips). read more

Awesome friendly service on a weekday afternoon. The cashier was patient and helpful with our party of 6. We tried the oysters, seafood combo and white chowder. I was really craving fish chips. There's not a lot of good cheap options in the area. Some really expensive ones but I couldn't justify spending that amount of money. So I settled for ivors. I don't know when they started up being their fish and chips game, but I was pretty impressed. You can get like five pieces for under 20 bucks. And that's a good deal The fish is thick and has good taste. The wife and I went with the captain's platter which is like 10 pieces of fish and coleslaw and chowder, and fries and it's like 40 bucks. Always Good. Every time I'm in the Sound I have to stop there. I've been going there since I was a child. Certainly there are better seafood dishes at high end restaurants but for a good old fashioned bowl of chowder and fish Ivar's never disappoints. We came here on Ivar's birthday 3/21. On this day only, for their birthday, they run a buy 1 get 1 for $1.18 sale. It is a limited menu with just about 4 different meals but you can mix and match these meals and get your second meal for just $1.18. We got a shrimp and chips basket, a 3 piece cod and chips basket and some cornbread. The cornbread comes wrapped in plastic wrap with a piece of butter. They had more of a moist cake texture but wasn't too sweet. The salt of the butter balanced this out. The shrimp was lightly coated in a cornmeal batter and there were plenty of crispy fries to go along with it. I thought this meal was pretty good. The fish however was over cooked which made the fish dry. The line in the drive thru was very long and moved slowly but I attributed this to the one day sale. My husband and I met at Ivar's 32 years ago when he was a manager there in Lakewood. But we live closer to the one at James Center in Tacoma/Fircrest now so we go there more often that we do to Lakewood. The employees do their level best to keep the restaurant clean. They pay great attention to every detail. Each order received is "cooked to order" (CTO) and is hot and fresh. We like to have both the fish and fries cooked a little bit longer so we ask for them "extra crispy" and they always make sure that we are pleased with just the perfect degree of 'doneness' we have requested. My NEW favorite is the chicken Caesar salad! It is loaded with romaine, croutons, fresh parm, and a large, crispy, deep-fried chicken breast that is sizzling hot and fresh. It's a full meal. My husband loves the clam chowder, but if it's not right, they will replace it. They also load us up with packets of saltines, tartar sauce, and ketchup. We make sure to present our punch-card at every purchase and we also receive a 10% discount by showing our Ivar's "Carte Clam" card with every purchase. (That reminds me of a goofy stunt my father tried to pull off out at Northwest Trek wildlife park several decades ago. At the entrance gate, he pulled out his "Carte Clam" card from Ivar's and pretended to try to pay his admission with it, pretending to not understand that it was anything different from a Diner's Club card or another credit card.) If Ivar were still alive, he'd be almost 120 years old now, and I think he would be pleased and proud of the restaurants that bear his name and this one at James Center, in particular. read more

Took two of my grandkids there they loved it. It was OK for me, but we will probably go back again. I have several that love seafood and their dad and mom can't eat it. We came to Ivan's on a recommendation from locals. No regrets! This is definitely a fast casual kind of place, and unlike any we're familiar with in the southwest. Fish was hot and crispy and. It greasy. Loved their tartar sauce! But the real standout was the smoked salmon chowder. Delicious! There was a bit of heat to it (which we liked) and plenty of good salmon flavor. Fresh, actually hot, delicious food today 2/24/22. Competent, friendly service as well! I decidedI was craving deep fried, battered fish, so where better to consume then Ivars? Pulled up Google Maps, one within a few miles from where I was, bazinga, there I was. Not famished and knowing my shopping was going to lead to snacking I ordered the kids meal. I just received the most disingenous reply to my review from Bonnie. She said she was sorry I felt as though I had been interrupted as though I had imagined it. I think whoever it was who waited on me interrupted me at least 8 times while I ordered 3 items - and in a very rude tone. Then she said they had listened to me which was obviously untrue. Then she said I could call her if she could do anything else for me - as if she had done anything for me. She followed up a rude visit to Ivar's with a rude message. $43.06 for clam chowder and fish and chips. Does not include drink. Clam chowder was very watery and only had few potatoes and clams. Saw bacon pieces but NO bacon flavor. Found piece of plastic in chowder. Fish and chips were way overcooked and was like eating breaded jerky. Fries were stone cold. All tables were dirty but as I sat down, someone started wiping them. I came in today as a new customer not knowing how it was going to be And I absolutely loved it. I tried a bunch of stuff and I left stuffed lol. The clam chowder in the bread bowl was Absolutely delicious. The calamari melts in your mouth and the fish and chips were cooked to perfection and paired with an excellent tartar sauce. The cook was a young woman who absolutely knows what she is doing. The young man at the counter gave us an above and beyond customer service. Very friendly and welcoming place. It's been a tough summer for me. This review isn't about that but during a tough summer, on a particularly rough day personally, the 2 gals at the drive through window made my day. Such above and beyond customer service. They were both so sweet and re-range in my order to make sure I got the best deal possible. Not for me. I wanted to like this place. Service was great maybe it was just what I ordered. Quality seafood is expensive ...but the portions here were very very small the price was what I would expect for top quality, same day caught and prepared by a chef, and I know that was not what we got here. I opted for coleslaw instead of fries... it tasted like cabbage and pineapple juice maybe that is how they make it in WA? Maybe it was just me. I will try it again some other time.
