Expert batter-fried fish and crispy chips: spot on, satisfies all the fried food cravings, while impressing with the sheer quality and moistness of the fish. I don't know when I'll be back to Tacoma to do a second taste test so dropping my review now. A rustic industrial depot of yesteryear has been converted into a collection of food stalls by the stalwart immigrants who are revitalizing old urban scapes. Very close to the famous Tacoma Glass Museum it was a draw for me because of its intriguing location and proximity to the museum. This stall has "Thai" in its name but the only Thai influence might be the stunning fresh orchid flower that decorated my plate. The proprietors are obviously hard working and graciously talked to me about the prep work that goes into masterful execution of batter-fried fish. They put a lot of elbow grease into getting the quality of the fish right: the fish is plump and moist, obviously high quality, not mealy and disintegrating in the least. The fried result is not greasy, it actually seems healthy despite being deep fried. Oh so delicious. I didn't need to eat the whole plate but I scarfed it down because it was irresistible. A wonderful fast food stall. The setting -- which is humble -- can also adds to the left behind industrial city vibe. Can't wait to go back when I'm craving some fried fish! Still terrific after all these years! I've been getting fish & chips (and chowder, and shrimp, and...) at Paya Thai in Freighthouse Square for many years now, and it's always terrific. Served hot & fresh, full of delicious flavor, friendly service, and attractive presentation (the cute little U.S. flags and lemon wedge garnishes are a nice touch!). You really can't go wrong with the good ol' fish & chips, but the clam chowder and fried shrimp are good too. Most recently, two of us ordered a 'daily special' platter that included a large order of fish & chips with 5 shrimp and then added a bowl of chowder: total came to about $30, which isn't bad since we split the meal and went away full and satisfied. One of their specialties is fish and chips, and they serve a good portion and present it nicely. However there is one catch, and it's a big one. The fish had absolutely no flavor . It was completely tasteless, so much so that I thought maybe I had caught Covid. It took tartar sauce, vinegar and salt to wake up the dish at all. I had the platter with 2 pieces of fish, 5 shrimp and a salad instead of fries, which cost a few dollars more. Altogether with drink, tip and tax it was over $36. Quite a meal, with an overloaded crisp and fresh salad of iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers and shredded carrots. The fish and shrimp were breaded and satisfying, but ordinary in taste. They always had good fish and chips in the past so we headed there. They didn't let me down, we had two piece meals, I also had chowder. The fish was hot and crisp, they use a panko style breading rather than a batter. The fries were well cooked, meaning crispy golden on the outside and soft on the inside. The chowder was very thick, but very tasty. Nice bits of clams, onion, and potato in a very thick and creamy base. The service was excellent. Then it comes to ambiance, well it's Freight House Square. The place is a run down dump with atrocious restrooms and a distinctive smell, much like B&I. There are several restaurants of various ethnic specialties and to be honest, they all have good food and have seemed to have persisted through COVID and the changing working environment. It seems that the city has done a good job of dispersing the homeless from the area, but there are still the hookers on the bus station side of the parking garage. read more
