generous fish portions expertly batter fried, and a sweet presentation

Expert batter-fried fish and crispy chips: spot on, satisfies all the fried food cravings, while impressing with the sheer quality and moistness of the fish. I don't know when I'll be back to Tacoma to do a second taste test so dropping my review now. A rustic industrial depot of yesteryear has been converted into a collection of food stalls by the stalwart immigrants who are revitalizing old urban scapes. Very close to the famous Tacoma Glass Museum it was a draw for me because of its intriguing location and proximity to the museum. This stall has "Thai" in its name but the only Thai influence might be the stunning fresh orchid flower that decorated my plate. The proprietors are obviously hard working and graciously talked to me about the prep work that goes into masterful execution of batter-fried fish. They put a lot of elbow grease into getting the quality of the fish right: the fish is plump and moist, obviously high quality, not mealy and disintegrating in the least. The fried result is not greasy, it actually seems healthy despite being deep fried. Oh so delicious. I didn't need to eat the whole plate but I scarfed it down because it was irresistible. A wonderful fast food stall. The setting -- which is humble -- can also adds to the left behind industrial city vibe. Can't wait to go back when I'm craving some fried fish! Reminds me slightly of Baltimore MD.

Fresh cod and chips, amazing clam chowder. Spouse got special with fish and shrimp which he enjoyed a ton. All so fresh.

Cod fish and chips. Attractive but not memorable.

I'm sorry I made a special trip based on YELP reviews. The chowder is dairy-free and thick with probably a flour thickener. Also, missing seafood flavor. The cod fish and chips was tasteless, probably frozen, cod. The breading and cooking were well done but not enough to earn any stars. Coleslaw and tarter sauce were not memorable. Friendly service.

    Shrimp plate, requested no fries.

Ordered takeout today, delivered in 20 min. Exceptional! HUGE portions! This will be meals for me for days! All of it was incredibly fresh and the shrimp super crispy panko and juicy! Probably the best I've had. The in person Freight House dining is far from fine, but the delivery time, cost, taste, quality, and portions can't be beat! $28.00 total on Door Dash!

I can't believe I haven't posted a review for this place. I've been here a few times since 2018 yet I was only able to locate two food pix. Oh my! =) LOL! I've ordered the Fish and chips a few times and it is delicious. Service is great. The dining vibe is great. I need to come back and eat here soon again. I'm craving fish and chips. Haha!

The food value is off the charts, and tastes wonderful. The clam chowder is great!! The people are always friendly, and it seems that they are always a notch above. Very far above.

Stopped here for lunch while waiting for an Amtrak train. Had fish and chips which were solid -- and the presentation was next-level -- but the real star was the dairy-free clam chowder w/bacon. And I had a great conversation with the chef -- if you're a Star Trek fan ask him about the Borg Cube!

Great quality fish and chips for $20 out the door w a can of soda. Customer service is what makes the spot 10/10. Nothing fancy about the flavor but great crunch on the fish with even crunchier fries. Always give those small businesses a shot.

Fish & Chips 4.7/5 overall. Crispness 5/5. Batter 5/5. Fish quality 5/5. Flavor 5/5. Fries 4/5. Size and value 4/5. The best fish & chips in the south sound. I have been here more times than I can count over the last 15 years and they are always consistently the best. There really is no comparison to anywhere in the tri county area, Cod or Halibut, both are amazing! If you want the best it's Paya Thai, trust me I try them all!

Cute little hole-in-the-wall fish & chips counter in Tacoma's Freighthouse Square. You can choose cod, halibut, shrimp, scallops, oysters, clams, chicken, or a combo. Light crispy batter, fresh fish, crunchy fries, all great food for a great price!

Ask the Community - Paya Thai Fish & Chips

Does anyone know if they use line caught cod?

I'm unfamiliar with Freighthouse Square, use a cane, and walk with a fair bit of pain, so I'd really like to know what entrance is nearest this restaurant. Can anyone tell me that? Thank you!

I would enter at the doors near the transit station, which as far as I know is accessible with automatic doors. It has an entrance to the food court at your left, and Paya Thai will be on the right not far from there.

We were out celebrating my buddy's birthday today, and started out next door for some smokes and drinks. I had a plan for some choices for his bday dinner, and he opted with Ms. Jane's inside BJ's Casino. First off... this place is very elegant with a fine dining experience. Secondly, Cassandra was absolutely superb!! We all thoroughly had an amazing experience, from the drinks, appetizers, to our entrees, and the service. The Lavender Martini was top notch, and we also ordered the White Mojito. That mojito was crisp and refreshing! Two spectacular cocktails. As for our meals, undeniably unbelievable!! I ordered the 12oz. Ribeye, with Garlic Potatoes and crisp Broccolini. So crisp and a unique almost vinaigrette flavoring, with a subtle spice. As a side, we ordered the Thousand Layer Potato. My first time ever having this, but seen how it was made on a video. Simply divine. My wife ordered the Braised Bison over Polenta, with some Carrots. This is the tastiest Bison we've ever had!! We finished the evening with a Dubai Chocolate Fudge Sunday, and Cassandra gave us each a spoon to share in this decadence. Needless to say, my buddy had an incredible day of celebration! Thank you for this wonderful experience! As always, Enjoy & Happy Birthday, Wazowski!

We were the only people in the dining room for lunch the entire time until our last 10 mins. This restaurant is inside a casino in Fife. Parking is interesting, and the casino itself is in the middle of a reno so it looks a bit messy but otherwise it is fine. Kudos to them for trying to make the outside section nice because the view kind of kills it. Pros - it's a very nicely designed space. The hostess and our waitress were so nice and welcoming, even giving me a stool for my bag (and it wasn't even my fanciest bag lol!) Overall, the restaurant is nice, the food seems to be mostly fresh and good quality and service was nice. I actually quite enjoyed my ribeye, despite our broccolinni having no almonds, as stated on the menu. My affogato was good, and the cake frosting and flavors were good. Cons - I say these with love...but we both feel the kitchen was not up to par, or the main chef was off, or something happened because there were quite a few mishaps during our visit. The appetizers were good, but the scallops needed salt and I would not pair them with pineapple, personally. The calamari weren't the most tender, and the breading was interesting - it's definitely not your typical breading, it suited a fish and chips dish better. The sweet and spicy sauce served with it is from trader Joe's...I know because I've bought it before, so I don't believe it's house made. Like I previously stated, the broccolinni was missing the almonds, and the carrots on the side that I ordered for $13 were so embarrassing that the waitress came back after serving us and told us that she spoke to the manager and got those off our bill. That's how ridiculous they were, so thank you to her for having good values at work. While I liked my steak, it was very, very fatty, and my husband asked for medium rare and definitely got medium well. Lastly, the pink champagne cake was disappointing, not because it was yucky, but because the cake itself was clearly days old, and had been freshly frosted. It was tough, dry and stale, while the frosting was fresh and light. Overall, I can see coming back but I'm in no rush due to the price/location/overall food.

I guess for $3.99 what should you expect. The crab boil was ok. Some parts were still cold. We asked for headless shrimp so I assumed that the shrimp would be deveined too. The garlic butter sauce didn't taste buttery and I think the garlic is jarred garlic. Don't get me wrong. I've used jarred garlic but you shouldn't be able to tell by taste. The sauce seems to have been thrown in after the seafood was warmed/steamed. I came with a party of 9, we ordered a few appetizers for the table, most of the party ordered drinks and we all got a meal. My filet and mashed potatoes were great, everything was perfectly seasoned, we also got the asparagus with hollandaise sauce (we ended up asking for more sauce since there wasn't much on the asparagus, but we weren't charged for it.). Onto the service, our waitress Alicia seemed like she just didn't want to be there. She spilled my glass of water all over the table cloth and the seat and didn't completely clean it up. The tablecloth, that was now soaking wet, was not replaced, so I had to sit in a wet booth and put a napkin on my lap as to not get my legs wet. To top it off, she didn't even refill my drink, it wasn't until I asked, that I got more water. Once our food was brought to our table, another staff member was helping to bring the food out and she snapped at him very rudely in front of the whole table. To make matters worse, we went to the front to ask that the music be turned down because it was very loud and we had someone hard of hearing at our table who wasn't able to hear anyone. The girl acted like she cared, but once we walked away, quickly went over and was obviously talking about us to a co-worker and the music got louder. Overall, it was a terrible experience from a service standpoint, especially for a fine dining establishment. At those prices, I expected a lot better, as did the rest of our party. I am from out of town, but my sister and all of her friends are from here and they will not be returning.
