They are only getting one star because I can't give them zero stars. We walked into Northern Fish at 4:31. The man behind the food counter wouldn't even look at us. The man working the fish counter says "we stopped serving food at 4:30". We said, we thought you were open until 5? To which he responded, we are, but we stopped serving food at 4:30. It's ridiculous that they don't continue service until 5. Time for us to look for a new fish and chips place. Not a great way to keep customers. We were looking for something different and saw this on Yelp. It's a fish monger with food offering fresh fish dishes. They have Fish and Chips cod and halibut. Clams, and shrimp. They also offer tacos and wraps. The service is great and it's counter service and you eat outside on the pier. With views or the port of Tacoma. It was a sunny day and I walked the trail along Ruston Way and on the way back decided to try this place, to get me some fish and chips. Well, the service was friendly and outside seating was nice, but the three piece cod order I got was just ok. The fish was a bit oily as were the fires. The cod was also a little bland in flavor, but the fries really tasted good. The portions were good sized, yet I probably could have finished everything if not for the heaviness. Will I try it again? Four stars awarded as an average--Three stars for the food they serve, but five stars for the seafood market and workers. The seafood selection is excellent, and it's all from the PNW. If you need something from other waters (squid, for example), they have a frozen section as well. Their smoked salmon selection is broad in choice, and the staff are helpful and are knowledgeable about their products. The food served however can be irregular in its quality. I've had perfectly deep-fried oysters and fish, but I've also been served fish that had been cooked until it was dark brown, but they replaced it without hesitation when I called it out. There's one person handling the cooking, and they also work the store, so during rushes they can be torn between two tasks. My other food callout is for the tacos--the insides are fantastic, but the tortillas always seem cool. I'm pretty sure that they aren't preheated before the innards are added, so they're missing the flavor and tenderness that comes with the heating. That said, with their location right on the water looking out across Commencement Bay, you won't find many better places to enjoy your food. read more

I've been trying to check out this place for a while, but they close shortly after 5pm on weekdays, so it made it hard to catch them. Pros: Kind staff, Tons of fresh seafood to choose from and cooked food you can order to go. In the summer you can sit outside and have a great view of the water front. CONS: Not much Flavoring on the batter, It def is just fresh seafood fried. Got the Ceviche and it had imitation crab in it (WHY??? we are at a fresh seafood place).. Trust me when I say that if you spot a fish purveyor that also has a small food counter, you should absolutely eat there. Stopped in Norther Fish on Ruston Way 6-20-25 to buy steamer clams to take home. As I was talking to the young man who was helping me (I was trying to figure out how many pounds I will need) I asked the young man (who was very helpful and very polite) approx how many clams are in a pound ...lady worker yelled across 5 or 6 customers from the cooking area ..."We don't count the clams Mam". She was very rude, snappy voice. I'm sure the other customers were embarrassed with her tone. Most employed people will walk up to a customer and ask if they could help you. I had heard a lot about this place, so I parked my bike and walked in. Wasn't that busy but the cashier/cook took a minute to kinda greet me. Obviously she knew I was a new customer, and I'm on my bike so I was just asking how long it might take because I had cycled here. But she gave me attitude and said five minutes. The workers here aren't the most friendliest people, they're quite curt. They have a window outside, and that's where you pick up your orders, you order from the inside. There isn't a sign anywhere that indicates you order inside. A quick and curt, "please go order inside" without even a glance at me was told to me. And I sat the closest to the window given other tables were taken, and I could see and hear other interactions. It's the same type of short and brusque responses when people ask questions or need something. However, their fish and chips were pretty spectacular. I ordered a regular (2 pieces) and I actually got a large (3 pieces)! I'm not going to complain about this mix up at all. The fish and chips were piping hot when you get your order. It comes with cole slaw, tater sauce, and ketchup. I wish it came with a lemon slice and it could have really tied it together for a classic fish and chip dish. I didn't ask for one, so they might have it in the back? I noticed folks going back to the window asking for ranch and BBQ sauce and there wasn't an extra charge, which is nice. The fish itself was crispy and not overly coated in batter. It had a nice crunch and had its shape and didn't fall apart when eating. And you definitely can't beat the view. read more

This place has some of the best fresh fish and oysters that I've ever had, comparable to getting it straight off the boat in Half Moon Bay or Gloucester. The two ladies who work here are awesome! They packed up our fish and oysters on ice, and packaged up some lemon wedges and sauce so it would all stay fresh for a couple hours until we could put it on the table. This is not a fancy restaurant with white table cloths and wait staff dressed in black but if you want some fish, it's deeelish! It's amusing to read the low star ratings ... didn't love my dog ... wouldn't explain the menu ... Spare me, if you can't read the menu and tell the difference between swordfish, halibut and cod, take your dog and head on over to red lobster for some hush puppies. read more

Yum! This is the place to come if you're needing fresh good quality seafood both to cook at home and made to order here. I've driven past northern fish products countless times over the years but recently I actually stumbled upon this place when I was in the search for fresh clams. Tacoma boys actually referred me here and proceeded to tell me this is where they get their seafood, good to know and here you can get it super fresh. So that day I sent my husband and he realized they made food fresh to order and now the rest is history. He's brought some soldiers from work here for lunch ans loved it so much he brought the family back. And I must say I was impressed, we ordered the calamari and chips aka fries, the halibut and chips and chicken tenders for the kiddo. My husband and I shared the halibut and calamari, the calamari was good though I wish they'd serve lemons with the meal and it was a tad over breaded but not over cooked which with calamari I've gotten a ton of over cooked/ rubbery calamari from other places over the years so that's a plus they can cook them correctly. The halibut was the highlight of my meal and was melt in your mouth delicious! Literally so good and they give you plenty of tarter to dip which is always important! We came here wanting beef bartered fried cod. We got hard and almost burnt fried fish and undercooked prawns. These were frozen inside, my husband spit them out they were so frozen. The items were also so greasy. We did get a refund on the prawns. Not too sure if we will go back. They had a platter of fish just sitting around so I assume that's what we got. read more
