I have been attending the Puget Sound Zen Center, both on Vashon and more recently in West Seattle,…read morefor about three years. It is a wonderfully open, cheerful, and thoughtful community, both for experienced practitioners and for those coming for the first time. There are great tips for first-timers here: https://pszc.org/new-to-zen/. I would add two quick things if you are coming for the first time. First, it is a good idea to arrive 15-20 minutes early, regardless of which meditation you attend. It is helpful to get a few pointers on where to sit and what to expect. People will be glad to offer suggestions, and there is always someone assigned specifically to help newcomers. Just ask for "the Shoji." Second, if you do not need wheelchair access, the entrance is right up the steps in the front of the building. The front is the side that looks out on the driveway where you drove in. Like Zen itself, the place has many doors. Like Zen itself, this can be a little confusing. If you need a more accessible entrance, the double doors will be on your right. If they are not open, just knock and someone will no doubt let you in. There is also a satellite Zen Center in West Seattle that meets on Monday nights at Fauntleroy UCC. You can find the schedule and other information for both Zen Centers here: https://pszc.org/.

When you first start, it might feel foreign, very different, but don't let that dissuade you; the practice, here, is to be true to the discipline while also learning how to teach & apply it in our culture. I also love that there are so many ways to be involved -- from working in the meditation garden, or working in the food garden (food is donated to the food bank), the Racial Healing group - or sitting in meditation on Zoom (every day there's at least one sit). But the thing I appreciate the most is the feeling I get that everyone is sincere, not judgmental or self-righteous. Really just learning how to practice no-self and, from within, transform greed, hatred and ignorance (the vows we say at every sit).

YogaFaith: A Beacon of Excellence in Christian Yoga…read more As a devout follower of Christ and a passionate yoga practitioner, I've long sought a positive Christian community that harmonizes the physical and spiritual dimensions of yoga within the framework of my Christian faith. My search led me to YogaFaith, a remarkable institution that stands out as the premier school and training center in the Christian yoga world, cooincidentally ran by my brother Derek and his amazing wife Michelle. YogaFaith seamlessly integrates the ancient practice of yoga with the foundational principles of Christianity, creating a space where body, mind, and spirit converge in worship and holistic wellness. What sets YogaFaith apart is not just its commitment to physical postures and breathing techniques, but its unwavering dedication to fostering a deeper connection with God through every movement and meditation. One of the most remarkable aspects of YogaFaith is its exceptional team of instructors, who are not only highly skilled yogis but also devoted Christians. Their expertise in both yoga and Christian theology allows them to guide practitioners through a transformative journey that transcends mere exercise. With warmth, compassion, and profound spiritual insight, YogaFaith instructors create an atmosphere of acceptance, encouragement, and spiritual growth in every class and training session. The curriculum offered by YogaFaith is comprehensive and meticulously crafted, drawing from a rich tapestry of yoga traditions while remaining firmly grounded in the teachings of Jesus Christ. Whether you're a beginner seeking to explore the fundamentals of Christian yoga or an experienced practitioner looking to deepen your practice, YogaFaith offers a range of courses and workshops designed to meet your needs and nourish your soul. Moreover, YogaFaith is more than just a school or training center--it's a vibrant community of like-minded individuals united in their love for Christ and commitment to holistic well-being. Through retreats, conferences, and online forums, practitioners from around the world come together to share their experiences, support one another, and inspire spiritual growth. In a world where the pursuit of physical fitness often eclipses the need for spiritual nourishment, YogaFaith stands as a beacon of light, reminding us that true wellness encompasses body, mind, and spirit. By embracing the ancient practice of yoga within the context of Christian faith, YogaFaith invites us to deepen our relationship with God, cultivate inner peace, and walk in the footsteps of Jesus with every breath and every posture. In conclusion, YogaFaith is not just a yoga school--it's a sanctuary for the soul, a refuge for the weary, and a pathway to divine communion. For anyone seeking to integrate their love for Christ with their passion for yoga, YogaFaith offers an unparalleled journey of transformation and spiritual awakening. I wholeheartedly recommend YogaFaith to anyone yearning to experience the union of faith and yoga in its purest, most profound form. So, Thank you Derek and Michelle for creating this amazing community of like minded people that lift one another up, encourage eachother, and make every day better for anyone involved with your organization!

There is a sense of family that you gain along with the knowledge and tools to teach your own classes. Like all trainings, you really just scratch the surface of yoga because it is such a vast practice that takes way more time than the 200 hour modules and hands on training can provide.. however, you leave with a solid foundation and life long friendships. It is a beautiful marriage of Worshipping Jesus with your whole body. Jesus First, Yoga Second. I adore Michelle, the founder of YF. She truly has a heart for ministry and makes sure that Jesus gets the platform not her.

They certainly aren't used to drop ins at the 5:30am class so I felt like I surprised her a little when I showed up. There isn't a lot of info on their website about drop ins, so I just reached out via email ahead of time to let them know I was coming. They have the coolest t-shirts from american apparel too! I feel like I would drop in again just to get another shirt! The programming was awesome and I got a great workout in! They have fantastic equipment and it's all in wonderful condition. You can tell they take pride in their gym. There is plenty of parking in their lot too, which is always a concern in the urban areas. If you're in the Tacoma area I definitely suggest dropping in at Tacoma Strength!

Just in the midst, I have been debating over where to re-join at a gym to start working out [hopefully commit....] it was only a $5 fee for UWT students to attend an orientation and to go in twice a week for I think it was a month or so. I went to the orientation, no one but myself showed up.. kind of embarrassing. When I first stepped in, I felt like Plankton from Spongebob... I was scrawny compared to these extreme work-out people... even the ladies were muscled-up. Since I was by myself, it was more one on one orientation which gave me more space to ask questions and such. I think the person's name was Morgan? Maybe.. I don't remember~ he took me around and showed me the different exercises Crossfit involves. I was really excited to try this out. After the orientation it was a couple weeks after that I attended my first actual session. WOW... I am exercise-impaired, literally... I cannot properly work out for some odd reason despite being "out of shape". It was super embarrassing that I was so slow and had to use a pipe compared to others who had pretty heavy weights attached to their bars. I don't know if Crossfit is exactly what I am looking for when it comes to working-out but definitely I am proud of myself for giving it a go. But just a bit too intense for my level. The trainers and people at the session were super friendly and understanding about my lack of skills and was patient with me as I struggled embarrassingly... back and forth across the gym... with the weight sled thing dragging behind me (:
