Was craving real pastries for breakfast on our trip to SD. Wayfarer showed up on a hidden San Diego list. Absolutely lovely bakery loved the crispy buttery croissant and the texture of the scones. Their sourdough bread look gorgeous, but it was not going to make it back to my home on the East Coast. Worth a stop if you're in the La Jolla area. It's complete takeout, but there is a patio with benches under their trellises that are covered with passionfruit vines so you don't have to wait to enjoy.

I've heard lots of people rave about this bakery and I have yet to visit. This review is solely for pastries my neighbor shared on here recent trip there. The strawberry pistachio croissant was delicious. The layers were perfectly flakey. It was crisp and delightful. The two flavors complimented each other well. The corn strawberry cookie had great flavor but the texted of the strawberry made it hard to eat and it turned into a crumbly mess. Both pastries weren't too sweet which I always appreciate. I would definitely go there if I was in the vicinity but from these two items, I wouldn't make a trip there specifically for them.

Kouign Amann (back), Black Forest (middle), Scone (front). Featuring Bird Rock Coffee Roasters lol.

If you're in the La Jolla area, you must come visit! Their black forest pastry is one of the best pastries I have ever had. The outside was buttery and flaky, and as soon as I bit into it, dark, rich chocolate oozed out with a nice cherry finish. This bakery seems more designed for to-go orders. There are benches for customers to sit at, but no tables.

Yummm fantastic pastries! The line was a good bit out the door when I went on a Saturday afternoon, but it moved pretty fast, maybe only about a 15-20 minute wait. I'm so lucky to have grabbed the last Kouign Amann for that day! The bread pastries were soft and buttery - they are good without heating them up, but I highly recommend waiting until you get home to heat them up! They taste that much better, especially for the Kouign Amann. You can really taste the salt in the cookie - I didn't mind it, but to some I'd imagine it may be a hair too salty. No indoor seating, and limited covered outdoor seating. Most people just take it to-go. It is true that the to-go line is likely the better move, as parking in this area can be a bit tough. No wait time on the to-go line, just requires a little bit of advanced planning!

Stopped by 10:30am on a Sunday, and waited in the ~30min line. Unfortunately, most of the goodies I was hoping to get were sold out (kouign amann, seasonal special Black Forest Cream Bun), so opted for the Strawberry Pistachio Croissant and Blackberry Apricot Scone. Loved the croissant - def for those with a sweet tooth, as there's an additional drizzle atop the obviously already sweet filling. The blackberry apricot scone was just alright for me, not too sweet, and was pleasantly surprised by the pocket of blackberry filling. Little patio outside covered with passionfruit vines. I will be back to redeem myself (and the kouign amann).

Hard time locating the ham and cheese

I want to start by say this establishment is very cute and the postive reviews ultimately brought me in while visiting from LA. As we pulled up we noticed the line which I was prepared for. The service was very welcoming and friendly. Clearly this place has a strong following and that's really great for the owners. However, we were less than impressed. We ordered various pastries and the only item that stood out was a strawberry scone. The peach scone was not good. No flavor and dry. The ham and cheese croissant was lacking any filling. The jalapeño croissant as well was lacking flavor. Sadly I don't think it's worth waiting in line for. The prices were roughly $5.50 per piece which is pretty average. I just feel they didn't hit the mark and there are so many places great places to eat in La Jolla.

The only reason I'm giving this a 5 star and not a 4 star is because they have an efficient order ahead system through their website. Based on other comments and the AI summaries I saw on Yelp and Google, it was recommended that I order ahead which is exactly what I did and it was a fairly easy and a quick system. It looks like their weekly menu keeps changing which is a both a good thing and a bad thing because you get to try new things but may not always get to eat your favorites again. I pre-ordered on a Thursday for a pick up on Friday and they were already out of their seasonal Black Forest Bun which sounded delicious. After scrolling through the menu multiple times, I decided to get the Pistachio Strawberry croissant and the Kouign Amann. When I arrived at the store, I immediately noticed the pre-order pick up window and was so glad that I wasn't standing in what seems to be on atleast a 25-30 line which I though was crazy for a weekday morning. The staff that gave my order was so friendly and it was so quick. What's great is they hold your order for atleast 24 hours in case you're unable to pick it up. There is some seating in the patio but honestly it's not meant for sitting and enjoying the pastries because there aren't really any tables but only seating. So it's best to pick up and take it home or eat by the beach which is what I did. The place is cute with a lot of plants and good vibes though. Since they don't warm up the croissants , I was worried that it wouldn't taste good while eating it at the beach but I was absolutely wrong. The Kouign Amann was okay, I'd give it a 4/5. The Pistachio Strawberry croissant however, was so absolutely delicious I'd give it a 5/5 even though it wasn't warmed up, it had the perfect amount of sweetness. It's easily one of the best croissants I've ever had. Overall this place has absolutely delicious pastries, but I'm not sure if I'd stand in a 30 mins line, maybe 10-15 mins, so good for them to have the pre order system.

    Jalapeño cheese and plain croissants
    Vanessa T.

This place had a killer line but we really waiting about 15 minutes to be able to order inside. The plain croissant was incredibly flaky, airy, and crunchy! It was likey the best croissant I've ever had. The Jalapeño Cheese croissant was also very good, but I felt like it needed more of an even spread of jalapeño. Staff are so nice and the interior is very pleasing to peruse. There's regular turnover in outdoor seating, just be prepared to wait.

one of the best bakeries I've been to in SD! Strawberry pistachio and kouign amann were my favs. English muffins had such a unique charred taste too! Chocolate croissant and ham & cheese croissants were solid basic pastries. There was a line out the door but it moved fast

Heard many testimonies of the wonders of Wayfarer, so this was a must-see on our San Diego staycation day trip. Turns out it was just as whimsical and quaint as the name of the bakery would make it seem, from the pet freindly atmosphere to the passion fruits hanging from the overhead trestle! As a tip, order ahead for pickup! Wayfarer opens its doors at 8 am, with online pickups avaliable as early as 9 - 9:15am. We walked right up, passed the already growing line, and enjoyed our breakfast. Truly the only way to skip waiting in line; going early won't cut it! We got three different croissants, as well as a baguette. Can't go wrong with the original, but the standout (to me) was the almond, with a crunchy top and stuffed with almond filling (think marzipan!). Perfectly balanced, and the almond, nor the sweetness, was not too overpowering. The Kouign-Amann had a crunchy, sugary shell. Almost like a creme brulee topping on a croissant. Sticky, but so delicious. Also shoutout to the baguette! One of the best I've had. Next time I'll have to bring some fruit, cheese, and honey. Wayfarer's vibes transported me to a community garden in Santa Cruz, and the tastes and techniques to Europe. Good thing it's inconvenient to get here from UC San Diego or else I'd be here much more often.

AMAZING Order online the night before for easy and guaranteed pickup of what you want The weekend lines seem so long We tried a couple of things but the standouts were the strawberry pistachio croissant and the kougnn Amin - so good!! We loved the ham and cheese and jalapeño croissant too and the cookie was amazing as well The interior is super cute and they do coffee too The art is also beautiful

Ham Cheese Croissants ($5.75), Plain Croissant ($4.75), Strawberry Guava Galettes ($6.50), Almond Croissant ($5.75), and Cinnamon Bun

Short line zoomed by! Cinnamon roll was good nothing crazy. Strawberry pistachio croissant good, ham and cheese croissant too flaky off centered ham and cheese. Overall cute spot and gorgeous pastries but nothing wowed me Skips - Strawberry corn cookie didn't taste any corn

We always bring guests to Wayfarer for a delicious pastry and beachside vibes when visiting San Diego. If you go early before 8 am the line isn't too long even on weekend. Unfortunately with a gluten allergy there's nothing for me but my husbands favorite is the Kouign-Amann. The croissants tend to be extra flaky and can sometimes be a bit dry for the ones without filling.

    Do they have a bathroom?

I don't believe so...it's really just a small ordering counter and display.

Is there a walkable beach nearby? Would love to grab something and walk the beach with it.

No. It's a short walk to Calumet Park, above the bluff overlooking the ocean. Benches here are nice.

Also curious about your gluten free options, if any?

This is not a bakery for anyone with celiac's or real gluten free needs - sorry but to keep people from getting sick! This is a delicious bakery but in all it's gluten glory - no GF. If you want truly great Gluten Free baked goods in San Diego I…

When sandwiches? I like sandwiches. Sandwich.

Sandwiches are put out at 11 I was told last week. They are often gone by 12:30. Last week I settled for a ham & cheese coissant. It wasn't a sandwich but it was awesome.

All you naysayers saying "fillers... premade...", just look to your right when you order - you'll see a fridge full of WHOLE roasts, wrapped and ready to be made. * Owner is regularly working the shop and you can tell he loves what he does. Super friendly and patient to walk you through the menu. * That French dip is a MUST try. Crispy sesame bun outside, cheesy and meaty inside. I'll be dreaming about it. * Biggest surprise - those fries! Best curly fries in SD hands down. It is what it is: * Yes, it's pricey. $20ish a sandwich. But weighing it all out, you get what you pay for. You're going to pay $4 less for a little sub down the street with an EIGHTH of the meat (and that stuff down the street isn't home made). * No inside seating. 4ish tables out front available to sit and eat at. * This is best fresh, for sure. Don't expect a good reheat experience. The bad: * Parking sucks. It PB so it's all paid parking. * Restrooms are not close. Verdict: * Phenomenal premium sandwiches that are worth every penny if you understand New England Roast Beef. He's doing it better than most on the east coast.
