Yum, a very solid place for something unique in the saturate boba scene that is the bay area. This place stands out because they market themselves as relatively health with "healthier tomorrow" on their cup due to their yogurt. But I digress. Their drinks are really good and reminds me of yogurt taste and consistency in China. I ordered a Lychee Yogurt with less sugar and the sugar balance was perfect, though I could still opt for a little less sugar since it was still somewhat sweet. I expected a more sour taste mixed with the sweet lychee. The topping didn't really matter IMO since their drinks are just a few fruit pieces on the bottom with their yogurt poured on top. I probably got like 2-3 lychees at most, all cut up and slurpable via the large straw. The price is a little steep at $7.50 for a small size with no way to size up. You're basically paying $7.50 for a Chinese (or Asian) flavored yogurt with some fruit bits. The healthy part also doesnt really add up since there is still a lot of sugar in the drink even with less sugar. Service was fast, and you can order via kiosk or in person. I can only recommend getting less sugar, as I feel anything more would be too sweet to be considered healthy. I would come back if I had too much sugar for the week and would like to cope that I'm drinking something healthier than milk tea, or if I'm just craving some Asian flavored yogurt instead of the western ones. In an area which is oversaturated with boba tea shops, it is nice that Hey Yogurt offers a different type of drink menu focusing on yogurt drinks. I stopped by on a Saturday just after 6pm and surprisingly for a new spot there wasn't a crazy long line outside. The shop itself is small with no seating available; this is strictly a takeout spot. Ordering can be done with the cashier or on the kiosk next to the cashier. The cashier was nice and patient enough to answer questions I had on the menu offerings since it was my first time visiting a Hey Yogurt location. For a new spot, I was surprised that my order was ready in around five minutes and it was nice that one of the screens said when orders were in progress or ready for pickup. I thought it was great that there were eight staff behind the counter rather than a bare minimum skeleton crew suffering while preparing orders as with other drink spots. I ordered the matcha & mango yogurt smoothie low sweet and pineapple fruit yogurt smoothie normal sweet (the third sweetness option is extra low sweet). The yogurt smoothie component in both drinks was thick and creamy since they use real yogurt and not Yakult type of yogurt. The mango and pineapple in each drink tasted fresh but minimal; I would've preferred more fruit puree in each drink for flavor rather than just drinking sweetened plain yogurt. I was able to taste the difference between the normal and low sweet yogurt but it wasn't too distinct. The matcha flavor in the matcha & mango was almost nonexistent before and after mixing the drink. When I was watching my order being made, I noticed the matcha wasn't freshly whisked matcha but rather a premade matcha foam squeezed out of a bottle. For a newcomer in Downtown San Mateo, Hey Yogurt offers something different to the drink scene. However, I do wish that the drinks could be made with more flavor so I am not essentially drinking plain yogurt; I am not sure if this is just how the San Mateo location makes its drinks or if this is the standard Hey Yogurt preparation style found in other locations. Also, the price per drink is higher than its nearby competitors and the drinks only come in a standard cup size which seems smaller its competitors as well. We came on the last day of the BOGO deal for Hey Yogurt's opening and it was so good that we had to go back! The first time we went, the BOGO is for the same type of drink only so we went with a classic, the purple rice. Despite us arriving so close to closing, there was still a huge line. However, the staff were trained really well. There's a kiosk to order at and one register where you could also place your order at so the line moved pretty fast. The store pumps out the drinks. So after you place your order, you do not need to wait long. The second time we went on a Saturday afternoon and there was only a couple of people in line. This time, we got the famous mango and a peach yogurt smoothie. I like their fruit ones much better than the purple rice. I also surprisingly liked the peach over the mango! The fruit adds the additional sweetness that balances out the tartness of the yogurt very well. You also get to customize the sweetness and I've got less sweet everytime and it's pretty perfect.
