Ok, kinda sad but I forgot to take a picture of my drinks LOL. We waited in line for about 20 minutes on a Sunday around 1:30pm. There were samples at the front we could try - doesn't really make sense to put it up there if you can't really try it until you're closer? Anyhow. We ordered the 22TW and 23TW (3 of each) and upgraded to large ($1 more for each) and had 50% "perfect sugar" and 5 ice cubes. Drinks were actually really delicious! The flavor is quite different than what I've had at other places. The silken boba was also very flavorful, which Allen really liked. Texture is like grass jelly. I do think if you go with 5 ice cubes, sugar level needs to go down even more. I sampled a yuzu osmanthus (non dairy) and that was so good, I want to get that next time. Sign up for rewards! Another new boba spot in San Mateo. They had some samples which I got to try while waiting - one of the champion milk teas and a yuzu osmantheus - both of which were tasty. We tried the calamari shiso one which was super refreshing. The flavors were balanced too. They ran out of shiso boba so we subbed it with jasmine silk boba which was pretty good - the texture is a little different from the traditional boba but I still liked it. My new favorite boba shop! They had two drinks available for sampling during their soft opening, golden buddha milk tea and calamansi shiso. Both were delicious! The golden buddha milk tea is very reminiscent of classic milk tea that you had growing up in the early 2000s with the addicting sweet and roasted black tea flavor. The calamansi shiso is so refreshing and the slight hint of shiso is almost minty. I was really impressed with these two samples alone. I was also able to sample their signature silk boba, which is similar to gelatin and chewier crystal boba. The texture is very unique and adds a nice touch of flavor and chew to your drinks. The staff is very accommodating in recommending which flavor of silk boba goes well in which drinks. I ordered their corn matcha and this was not bad! I think the corn milk had way more grit to it than I expected. The flavor is nice, but I think it's missing something that would complement the matcha better. The flavor reminds me of a sweet corn dessert. The matcha is more on the lighter and earthy side. Some tweaks to the recipe and it's golden! I had gotten with 25% sweet and that may still have been a tad much or was made wrong. The flavor of the tea in the golden Buddha was very good and the yuzu osmanthus was refreshing. There silk boba is unique and very tasty! We got the wintermelon silk boba with the Golden Buddha I probably won't come back, cause I think TP Tea still ranks higher. We ordered two drinks: 4/5 Iron Buddha (tie guan yin?) milk tea with winter melon silk boba - the winter melon flavor doesn't really come through, but the silk boba was cooked perfectly and has a delightful qq texture. I ordered the 25% sweetness for the tea but I think I could've taken it down a notch to 10%. The tea flavor is delicate and compliments the milk wonderfully. 4/5 pistachio iron Buddha with jasmine silk boba - you can taste the jasmine flavor if you really take your time to find it. Like the winter melon silk boba, the texture is fantastic. The pistachio flavor is evident, although personally, I don't find that it melds with the tea flavor well. We tried Odd One Out during the soft opening phase and waited about 30 min in line on a Saturday afternoon! They did a wonderful job having samples for folks to try by the register and most of the line was caused by people being indecisive when ordering. Once we ordered, the drinks came out in less than 5 min, even though they warned us it might take another 20 min. My family of four all ordered the Yuzu Osthmanthus with Silk Boba and loved it! The drinks are unique and a nice variety although I do wish there was more than one caffeine free option. So happy they opened in San Mateo! We used to visit whenever we were in LA and now we have it right at our doorsteps (dangerous). I love the texture of the silky boba and the smoothness of the champion milk tea. Some of their yuzu and shiso drinks that I sampled were also very good. I'm picky about boba, but I felt like their tea was weak/too diluted, I wasn't impressed with the texture of the brown sugar boba, and the "silky boba" is much closer to jelly than it is to boba. This, combined with the fact that most regular teas are $7.50 and large is $8.50 leaves me feeling like I'd rather go to my favorite shops (HEYTEA or Chicha San Chen) or classic shops like TP Tea. That being said, their drinks were much better than plenty of other shops like MeetTea and ShareTea, so I might be back. The champion tea is indeed very good! Tastes different than other boba chains and the tea flavor itself is present. I also got the regular tea, sobacha (???), the description of the notes is accurate. It was a roasted, deep flavor. Im giving 4 instead of 5 because i wouldn't consider the silky boba as boba. Its not jelly either but it's closer to jelly texture than it is to boba. Maybe overall, slightly less than a mochi? But either way i think that description is a bit misleading. read more

I've been wanting to try the locations in LA but timing never worked out so I was super excited to see this place open in San Mateo. Replacing Shuyi Grass Jelly (I wasn't a fan of that place), they're still in soft opening phase with estimation for grand opening sometime in December. Current hours are Tues-Thurs 12-6pm and Sat-Sun 12-8pm, closed Mondays. Got there around 1:30 on a Wednesday and the line was about 5 people, but by the time we left (about a 20 minute wait from in line to getting drinks), the line was out the door. When I showed up on Tuesday at 12:30, the line stretched past the restaurant next door. Ron the cashier was really friendly and offered us samples of some of their drinks. We sampled the Yuzu Osmanthus tea and the Champion milk tea, both perfect sweet. The yuzu had refreshing, non-artifical floral notes to it. The milk tea was smooth and had great tea flavor (I can see why it won an award) Matcha was also offered but they were refilling when we were sampling so we declined to wait. Ended up ordering the TW23' Golden Buddha Silk Boba at 50% sweet (perfect sweet), 5 piece ice (less ice) and upgraded to large. The final cost was about $8.50 which was pricier than nearby places (ex: TP Tea). I chose jasmine silk boba as the silk boba. I liked my drink a lot! The tea had a mild, roasted flavor typical of Iron Goddess/Tieguanyin tea. I do wish I had opted for 25% sweet. The silk boba was floral with jasmine flavor and reminiscient of the tapioca mochi topping from the chain torotea in LA. I prefer boba as my usual topping and debated getting that instead, but opted for trying the drinks as they recommended for my first time. Overall, I was pleased with this new store. The employees were all very kind and helpful. For future visits, I will opt for 25% sweet and try their brown sugar boba topping next. I love odd one out! I've gone a few times on weekends and the line did take a really long time but the drinks were always pretty quick to come out. They always have samples which I love and the owner is always taking orders. He's very kind and never rushes you when ordering. He's also very willing to share his opinion and help you decide if you're stuck. The cashier was super friendly and we got a chance to sample 3 of teas (TW 22' Champion Milk Tea, Calamansi Shiso Silk Boba and Maple Matcha) and honestly loved all of them! In the end, I ordered TW 22' Champion Milk Tea (their award winning tea) with 10% sugar and no ice. It was delicious - very silky and creamy in flavor and there was a subtle sweetness from the red oolong tea which really enhanced the flavor. My friend told me last night that Odd One Out had opened up in San Mateo. Since this chain was one of their favorite tea shops in Taiwan,when I found myself downtown today I had to drop by to try them out. During this soft opening, they don't have the full menu that they do for the shops in SoCal, so instead of getting my kids usual strawberry matcha, instead, I tried the 22 TW Champion Milk Tea $7.45 and the Calamansi Shiso Silk Boba refresher $6.95. The only modification was to go easy on the ice. After trying them both, I could see why the 22 TW Champion Milk Tea won a prize. The milk tea was fragrant and strong and didn't have that undercurrent of licorice that sometimes you taste in cheaper milk teas, and the milk foam on top was divine. My kid preferred the Calamansi Shiso Silk Boba refresher, which is delightfully tart, even better tasting than the Yuzu Osmanthus sample that they had out. We loved the extra little twist of flavor provided by the slippery shiso silk boba. If you're going on a weekend during soft opening, be prepared to wait. The line stretched out in front of the Domino's Pizza next door, but I think my total wait time in line until picking up my drinks was about 30 minutes on a Sunday around 4:00 p.m., (There was one cashier, so most of the time used was waiting to order.) I'm obsessed with this chain after having it in LA; the golden champion and the calamansi shiso are two of my favorite drinks. I think it's not perfect yet because they just opened; the sugar levels I got were quite inconsistent (a little too sweet at 25% when I got it the first time, and then extremely not sweet the second time I got it even compared to my friend's 25% drink). However, I am giving 5 stars despite the imperfections because the customer service is excellent. We arrived at 7:50 PM before they closed at 8:00 PM, and the cashier/team lead was professional, calm, and super nice even though the store was clearly still really busy right before closing. He was kind but firm about the store being closed to people who tried to enter after 8 PM (since there were still people in the store waiting for the drinks and would go out the door). When I went up to tell them that my drink was too sour, he was in the middle of explaining/teaching the closing procedure to the team, but he was very calm and professional about addressing my sugar level. The girl who fixed my drink was very nice about it as well, and offered to correct it further if I wasn't happy with it. I ended up actually adjusting the sugar level more at home since I realized they were just using simple syrup and I can make that at home, and it was perfect. I'm overall just impressed by how well they worked together and were so professional despite a clearly busy and hectic time. I definitely intend to keep coming back regularly since I love Odd One Out and I'm really excited they're here in the Bay. read more

Great new spot that just opened up a few weeks ago. The owner was super friendly and helpful in explaining any questions we had as well as allowing us to sample the silk bobas before deciding if we wanted them in our drinks. They actually make these silk bobas in house and I'd say they have a good flavor profile. It's made of tapioca and still have a chewy texture hence the reason they are still considered boba. They also had a few samples of some of their teas out for guest to try. We tried the double matcha, the champion milk tea, and the yuzu osmanthus. All 3 samples were super tasty. We ended up getting the Jasmine green milk tea, banana bread matcha, and the yuzu osmanthus tea. I really enjoyed the Jasmine milk tea and would recommended getting it here over Molly tea. I love how all the drinks have a strong tea taste. The only one we didn't love was the banana matcha as it didn't have much banana taste and had too strong of a cinnamon taste. It was still good, but not the best banana matcha I've had either. I think the double matcha would've been a better call. All the drinks are recommended at 50% sweetness and I also would say that that is a good sweetness to stay at if you like sweet drinks, and if not to do less sweetness than that because they are already pretty sweet at 50% in my opinion. Extremely disorganized and painfully slow. The line moves about one person every 3-5 minutes, and we waited around an hour and a half just to order boba. The biggest problem is that the same person at the front is giving out samples and taking everyone's orders, creating a completely unnecessary bottleneck. Ironically, they make the drinks faster than they can take the orders. For a boba shop that's been established for a while, it feels like they should have figured out a much better system by now.
