Even though it's called Luma Coffee Lounge, there's hōjicha & matcha available. A lot of menu items were either not available yet or out of stock. We stopped by during lunch and there was a short line, but it moved quickly. From start to finish, it took ~10 minutes to receive our drinks. Loved the free Pokémon cards at the register! I was excited to see a new coffee shop open in Redwood City, especially one with ample parking! Luma Coffee Lounge wasn't too busy on a Saturday morning. The interior was very spacious, but somewhat sterile. I prefer my coffee shops to be cozy, and this one had the bright shiny vibe of an Apple Store. I ordered a Honey Lavender Latte, which was tasty and well-made. I was tempted to get a pastry, but all their savory options contained pork, so I skipped it. I love that they use Nami Matcha, which I've been wanting to try! The music selection was also really good and they have a nice sound system, which made the whole atmosphere even better. Another thing I loved was the parking situation. There's a spacious parking lot right next to the cafe, which is super convenient. The cafe is inside the church but has a separate entrance directly into the cafe, so it still feels like its own space. The seating area seems to be part of the church entrance, but during non church hours it turns into more of a cafe seating area. It was really nice, peaceful, and relaxing. The Panela was not sweet enough meanwhile the salted toffee was too sweet even at half the sweetness. The staff was very sweet and made adjustments (added more panela syrup) but still it just was quite bland. I love trying new matcha spots and this definitely did not disappoint. Me and my friends came here and all ordered the mango matcha. To our surprise it was perfect, not too sweet and the matcha was not too earthy like others I've tried before. The layout inside was quite unique, as when you enter where you order seems a bit tight and small, but as you continue to walk inside there is a nice, huge seating area to chat or do some work. I'm so happy that Kaizen has expanded to their sister coffee shop, Luma! I was so concerned there wouldn't be any parking but it's located at a church, so there is ample parking! When you first walk in, you're greeted by the baristas and can try their chocolate! I think they're promoting their new product. The baristas are all kind and friendly. We didn't know what Panela meant, but they were happy to share it's a brown sugar latte and that their mango matcha latte were both popular drinks. Of course, that's exactly what my friends and I ordered! The mango matcha latte was delicious! The mango puree they used tasted freshly made and was perfectly sweet with the Nami Matcha they used. The Panela coffee was also really really good! Perfectly sweet and the coffee was so balanced. Another positive about Luma is that there is a lot of space to sit and enjoy your drinks! Luma is such a cute café with a beautiful aesthetic. The space is bright, cozy, and has a great atmosphere for hanging out or getting some work done. Unfortunately, the Panela tasted a little too sour for my liking, and the Salted Toffee reminded me of See's Candies--very sweet and candy-like, which wasn't really what I was expecting. A huge bonus is the plentiful parking, which is especially appreciated when visiting a busy coffee shop in downtown Redwood City. I tried the mango matcha and it really hit the spot. They use Nami matcha for their drinks, and you can definitely taste the quality. The matcha is also on sale on their merch rack. New matcha spot in RWC! Located on the side conjoining lobby with a church. Went on a Sunday, so got my church fill while waiting in line lol. Ordered the mango matcha latte with oat milk, Hojicha latte with oat milk, and a cortado with oat milk. They use nami matcha and minor figures oat milk! The mango matcha was good but I felt that the matcha was a bit grainy & had a slight astringent/bitter taste & there was A LOT of mango puree in it which kind of covered the astringent bitter flavor profile but may have over powered the matcha a bit. My friend liked the hojicha latte and said it was really good, not too sweet, and just the right amount of roasty. The cortado didn't taste like an cortado at all, just tasted like 2 shots of espresso. I also ordered a ham and cheese croissant. They don't currently have an oven to warm their pastries, but said they will be getting one? Nothing special with the croissant. It was flaky but a little plastic-y, soft but good. Maybe better warm? As far a line, I was the second person out the door when I went. Shop is small so the line isn't too long, but from lining up to getting my drinks it was about a 20ish minute wait. You can tell they care about the quality and craft, especially watching the drink being made. I got the matcha latte and honestly took my sweet time drinking it lol. The matcha was smooth, buttery, and not bitter at all. They used a good amount of matcha, but it was still incredibly balanced. The vibrant green color was the first thing I noticed, and that's always a good sign. My son got the mango matcha and really enjoyed it too. Customer service was really good, quick turnaround around time from ordering to getting the drinks. As for pastries, I know they're still new, so I'm sure they're figuring things out. When I went, there were only two croissant options available--butter and almond. Both looked good, but I'd love to see a few more choices down the road. Maybe a couple of cookies (please please do like a black sesame cookie lol) would be a nice addition while still keeping things simple. Overall, a great first impression. I'm so excited that luma opened. What drew me to them was that they use nami matcha and I'm very glad that they've recently added new items onto the menu. During their nami pop up, they also offered pandan matcha and earl grey matcha and I hope they also add those one day. You can never go wrong with their mango matcha or hojicha. I tried their salted toffee latte recently and it was a bit too salty but still good. I just wish they had more comfortable seating and more working outlets around their seating areas. read more

I got to visit the soft opening for Luma this weekend and I was left so impressed! It is located at the Rise City Church in Downtown Redwood City with its own entrance. I love the simplicity and minimal aspect inside! We were greeted by the staff upon entering and were asked for our opinions on their drinks so they can work on any improvements. But we were really amazed with the drinks we ordered! When I got wind of this new coffee shop I knew I had to make the drive up to check it out. I walked in and was confused where the line started as there was no sign. I walked all the way to the other end just to be told by another customer that the line was by the entrance I just walked through. By then everyone that walked in behind me had made a line in front of me. I knew I had to try both the coffee and matcha and tried the salted toffee on my first visit and the mango matcha on my second visit. The salted toffee was delicious. I asked it for it to be less sweet at 25%. The mango matcha (less sweet) was a good matcha but the mango flavor was overpowered by the matcha flavor. I couldn't taste the mango. The space would benefit from clear signage of where to order and where to pick up orders. The staff benefits from welcoming all their customers and acknowledging them if they are taking a long time to take their orders. The vibe is not welcoming. During my second visit there was plenty of people available to take orders but no one did and the line just got bigger. None of the customers were acknowledged or thanked for waiting. The lounge area was loud full of laptops. Felt more like an open concept to work than a place to chill and catch up. I parked off to the side of the church the first time and the second time inside the church parking. I see this being difficult to access the coffee shop when church is in session. There's two entrances one facing the busy street and the other by the church parking. Bathrooms are clean. This shop offers another good coffee and matcha option for this area. read more

IT'S ABOUT TIME Redwood City got a trendy café! I don't have a specific drink recommendation because you can't go wrong. I've tried the Panela and the hojicha lattes, both were 10 out of 10. Service is efficient and polite. But yes, the price matches the quality. The one pastry I got was great, but I wish they offered more selection. The seating area is not my vibe, we've joked that it looks like Jesus's waiting room (white walls, gray furniture, The Good Place vibe).
