Service was great , I found out about the sour dough bread, it was so hot and delicious. Even the butter was good. My salmon was cooked perfectly, my rice and black beans were the perfect side dish. Ended the evening with "The Powerful Stuff". If you have not had that dessert , it's worth a try. I wouldn't recommend eating it alone, it was a chunky portion. I'd be in paradise if I could marry J. Alexander's building to a Barnes and Nobles with a studio apartment and four car garage. The food is delicious. My usual are the Carolina Crab Cakes. Although I'm a creature of habit and rarely deviate from the norm, I've also tried the Filet Mignon with Bearnaise. I was pleasantly surprised. My waitress suggested I try the carrot cake and it's become a nice addition to my meal ever since. read more

J Alexander's was exactly what I needed today! My server, Jamie was heaven sent and the absolute best. I always enjoy the welcoming atmosphere. But tonight it was truly the service and food that made our day. My hubby ordered the prime rib. I didn't even have to chew it and it was so flavorful. This is coming from someone who likes their steak "cooked." I ordered the Steak Maui and the taste was impeccable. It was perfectly prepared. I can't forget the horseradish cream sauce. My family and I came on a Saturday afternoon. We were seated immediately. Our waiter was super friendly but kept forgetting our drinks. We ordered the Mac and Cheese but the waiter brought fries. When we addressed this, he brought us the Mac and cheese but still charged us for the fries. The prime rib is always good- I've been here a few times. It's very soft and tender and is good on its own. No sauce or salt is needed. The crab dip was very rich, cheesy and had huge chucks on crab meat! There's plenty of parking. As soon as Ii walked in, I loved it. The smell of the firewood they use fills the entire restaurant. Speaking of which, it's upscale contemporary.... Like what you would expect to find at a nice steak focused restaurant. It's a bit dark and I suggest you wear something nice but they will accept your money no matter what you have on. The prices are on par with food of this quality but I don't think it's over-priced. I enjoyed one of the specials: Montreal ribeye. Dry aged with Montreal seasoning (whatever that is) and a side of loaded mashed potatoes. Excellent. I also managed to sample the same cut off the regular menu which is marinated. It was very good as well. I'm not sure which I liked better. Either way... You can't lose. Oh. And the wait staff was excellent as well. I'll definitely be back. read more

Great atmosphere, low lit & busy without being overly loud. We started with the spinach queso and chips which was delicious. We also tried the soup of the day- creamy chicken noodle. It was very flavorful, full of veggies and LOADED with mushrooms. My husband ordered the Maui Ribeye with mashed red potatoes. He really liked the steak, which has a sweet pineapple flavor, but the steak itself had no seasoning. He added some and said it was much better. We both agreed that the mashed potatoes weren't great. Pretty tasteless. I ordered the Palermo Chicken. It's pan fried with goat cheese and sun dried tomatoes in a lemon butter cream sauce. Overall, it was very lemony and overpowering with the goat cheese. My broccoli was undercooked and cold as was my couscous. We had to ask for bread and butter. It is not offered. They brought 4 or 5 small pieces of very hard bread with some butter. Our server was ok, but not great. Not bad, just not great. Overall, glad we tried it, but we don't foresee returning. read more

This is a great Resturant for a very special occasion dinner. It's decorated beautifully and very serene atmosphere. We had flounder served with lemon butter sauce and whole green beans with butter and slivered almonds. It was cooked perfectly and it was very enjoyable meal. If you are planning on eating steak be sure you are prepared to pay well for it though. Least expensive steak was $40. So we opted for the fish which was around $24. Not sure why it's taken me this long to review J Alex. This is easily one of my fav restaurants in BR. Very nice atmosphere and always with great, FAST service. Hardly ever have a wait except maybe on Sundays after church. The Mac and cheese is top notch and different from anywhere else. If the smoked salmon dip is on the menu you can't not order it. Pro tip is to get it with tortilla chips instead of toast points (they are too hard). Hawaiian ribeye is amazing. Also the grilled trout is great!! And when hungry enough... finish your meal with the carrot cake. It's sheet cake style topped with a large helping of cream cheese icing they melt all over it and serve hot. Sooo good. When the family is in town, we eat here 9 times out of 10 and are never disappointed. Last time I went I took a friend who had never been. The waitress overheard me telling him all about the carrot cake but we didn't order it. She decided to give us one on the house. It was so sweet... made him like the place even more! read more

As much as I love their ribs and Mac and cheese, the salad is my go-to, I literally have cravings for it! The servers are generally pretty good and quick, but it is really busy most of the time so any minor issues are totally understandable! It's a very busy and popular restaurant! There's always a wait!
