One of my favorite restaurants in Baton Rouge. The menu is not too fussy, which I like, and everything Ive tried is delicious. I usually order the rattlesnake pasta but went out on a limb and tried the pork tenderloin. It did not disappoint. Very tender and flavorful. My mom ordered the Cypress Salad, which she enjoyed as well. Most dishes are over $15 but I believe it's well worth it. My only dislike is the lighting. I get that it's supposed to be romantic and whatnot, but it was way too dark at 1pm. My mom had to put on her glasses just to read the menu! All in all, great food and service. read more

Best place to get the best veggie burger hands down, ambience is great & the food is always on point. It's so amazing. I couldn't opt for the carrot cake because It I way to full. If you're transitioning from meat then you won't be disappointed. Was excited about eating at J Alexander's, as it was my birthday dinner. However, the experience left me very disappointed. The waitress brought my salad and dumped part of it out on the table. She rarely came to check on us. Had to literally flag her down and ask for other waiters to get her. When she finally came back, I asked for more lettuce, she told me "no" I couldn't have more. We had our leftovers boxed and bagged. When I got home noticed they had been packed upside down. Even though she was a bad waitress, I left a tip. I would never be as rude as her!! I went to J Alexanders not expecting much. From the outside I thought the place looked a bit hokey and pretentious, and I'd heard mixed reviews about the food. Our server was Taylor. He was in training and it was obvious. He was awkward and uncomfortable, trying a bit too hard. He had a trainer, however, who helped balance him out. The menu is small, but not too small. I found it to be appropriate for the setting. It's rather pricey for a twenty-something like myself. I ordered the pork tenderloin and my girlfriend had the prime rib. The trainer server asked my girlfriend if she'd like the steak seared and took time to explain the difference between prime rib and other types of steak. Though we knew this, it's nice for a server to take the time to explain it. Our meals came out in relatively short order, and...wow. The food was really excellent. The pork tenderloin was tender and succulent, served with a tangy far-eastern inspired glaze and a heaping side of mashed potatoes. The steak was seared on the grill and, though fatty, was quite good as well. It was honestly one of the best meals I've had at any restaurant in recent memory. Overall, a good experience. I would definitely go again. Yeah, Taylor was kind of a dweeb and its a bit expensive, but I have to say it was worth it. Highly recommended. read more

I recently came on a Tuesday night for a date night and really enjoyed the entire experience. On Tuesdays they have $20 select wine bottles as a special. We weren't sure which wine we wanted so our waiter let us try some out. The waiter was very attentive and helpful with all of our questions about the menu. The restaurant has a lot of booths which creates a very intimate environment perfect for a date night. The overall ambience (lighting, music, and decor) also added to the overall pleasant experience. The food was good. My date really enjoyed the "Not Your Ordinary Mac & Cheese" with his steak and I enjoyed the french dip with au jus on the side for dipping. Great Fresh food. Surprisingly the best Cheeseburger I have had in a long time! Prime rib is incredible here, because no one else in Baton Rouge can do it right. It's too bad that we were treated so badly when we visited the restaurant. The "lady" that was handling the seating was so rude and disrespectful to us that I will never return to this restaurant. I understand when your restaurant is busy but you should be prepared when it's Mother's Day weekend. To treat us like we were beneath them was insulting and humiliating. I had the spinach con queso dip which was delicious. I would definitely recommend this as a starter. I had the Alex salad with fried shrimp which was very tasty. Great restaurant especially for a nicer business lunch. Their service is impeccable and their entrees are delicious. My personal favorite was a tuna burger served during lunch. Their fries are delicious because they are thin and "shoestring" style. Also, their quest appetizer is a definite crowd pleaser. You can be in and out in under an hour at lunch time, or take your time if you'd rather. I haven't been for dinner in several years, so I will update my review if I go soon. Went with family and I think they were all impressed way more than me. This was probably due to the fact that my $30 filet was rare instead of medium. It was really odd. Initially when they brought it over I thought it was well done because the outside was charred pretty heavily, but when I cut to the center I saw pink so I was happy. I eat my steak from left to right like reading a book. So on the edges I was pleased to see perfectly medium meat. When I got to the center it was cold and rare. I had already eaten so much I would have felt like a tard sending it back so I just started eating from the other edge. All in all there were only a couple pieces I couldn't stomach so I wasn't that upset but when u pay $30 bucks they should get it right. Absolutely crazy about J's. I have ate at J's in both Louisiana and Florida they are always consistent. Having been single for a while and now married I just always got used to sitting at the bar because when you are by yourself the bar is more conducive to solo diners. J's bars are always elegant and manly usually with a lot of wood, which I like. My go to dish is definitely the prime rib sandwich. The ahi tuna, rattlesnake pasta and orzo are all worth trying. The food or restaurant is not fine dining but for a person on a budget it's a notch up for most people. Service at the bar has always been pleasant. read more

We came here to celebrate our Anniversary after the LSU game. The service was great and so was the food. The dessert menu should be printed for people like us who want to read about the most important dish and make a wise decision. The only dessert the waitress asked for us to try was keylime pie. Low quality Filet Mignon. Sent it back twice and it was the same. It was not a Filet Mignon. Will Not be going back nor will I refer anyone to this location. Took 2 bites out of each steak and had to pay for an uneaten meal. Poor management here. Use to eat at this location on a regular basis, but the quality is definitely not the same now. Don't get me wrong, the ambiance of this restaurant was lovely and our server was over the top polite and cheerful. The problem was that I was served food that had so much salt that it was inedible. I was in a party of 3 and ordered the Ahi Tuna Steak with smashed potatoes and broccoli ($32). I have eaten these three food items MANY times during my life and enjoyed every time.... until this one. I started with the tuna, which was cooked medium and looked great. I usually prefer salty foods to sugary seasonings, but the dipping sauce for the tuna was so salty that it made my lips pucker. After a few bites, I tried to temper the sauce with a fork full of smashed potatoes. After swallowing, I winced my eyes and stuck out my tongue before grabbing my glass of water. The potatoes were HORRIBLY salty. I was so shocked that I asked my two dinner mates to try the potatoes to see if my reaction was exaggerated. They both agreed that the potatoes were inedible. I have never sent a dish back in my life (I am 62 years old and not new to the restaurant experience), but my husband hailed our server and urged me to tell her what was wrong. I did so reluctantly, explaining that the salt level was unpalatable. The server offered a quick apology and a substitution. I ordered a baked potato, plain, figuring that I could still eat the salty tuna with that as a companion. She soon returned with the largest steaming potato I have ever seen... which was smothered in SALT! I gestured to the potato and said, "Is all that salt?" to which the smiling server replied in the sweetest sardonic, " Yaaas." I could only laugh. It was too unbelievable. I took the remaining tuna and the potato home to deal with at another meal. We still left a nice tip, but I will NEVER eat at this restaurant again. Their lazy method of flavoring creates unhealthy and distasteful food. A knowledgeable chef would never rely on excessive salt as a seasoning. read more

This is a great chain restaurant. Virtually identical to Houston's or Hillstone. Hard to tell the difference. The French Dip sandwich is truly incredible. I have cravings for it. In New Orleans, only Houston's can cure the craving, but in Baton Rouge, it's J. Alexander's. again the menus and ambiance are virtually identical, and so is the food... I would call this my favorite upscale chain. Much better than outback or other crappy chains, but a lot nicer! I highly recommend J. I give it five stars, not for its food, but for its service! I come here often on my lunch hour, and when I tell you the staff is here to cater to you, it's no hype. The food I do appreciate, especially the Hyde Park chicken sandwich, which I have with fresh avocado and grilled fresh jalapenos (not the pickled kind!), and the fish tacos, which I order grilled, again with those yummy fresh grilled jalapenos. As I sit at the bar to make the most of my lunch hour, the bartenders know my order, my drink (unsweetened ice tea) and my favorite condiment - Tabasco hot sauce (which, by the way, they uncap for me when they hand it to me!). The pork chop is awesome, too! I work in the customer service sector, too, and when I need some attention for myself, and am weary of making other people happy at work, I come here because I know they will take care of me! read more
