I give it five stars, not for its food, but for its service! I come here often on my lunch hour, and when I tell you the staff is here to cater to you, it's no hype. The food I do appreciate, especially the Hyde Park chicken sandwich, which I have with fresh avocado and grilled fresh jalapenos (not the pickled kind!), and the fish tacos, which I order grilled, again with those yummy fresh grilled jalapenos. As I sit at the bar to make the most of my lunch hour, the bartenders know my order, my drink (unsweetened ice tea) and my favorite condiment - Tabasco hot sauce (which, by the way, they uncap for me when they hand it to me!). The pork chop is awesome, too! I work in the customer service sector, too, and when I need some attention for myself, and am weary of making other people happy at work, I come here because I know they will take care of me! read more

Seated quickly, Sunday 12:30 Appetizer's generous portions, Spinach / cheese w /chips, and Guacamole w/chips. Spinach dip OK. Guacamole Great, chips served hot. Poor attention to Quality... I feel compelled to take a moment to speak up about my dining experience at J Alexanders of Baton Rouge Tonight, Jan 16, 2017. I arrived from Houston on business and had dinner at the bar where, 1st- I was served a drink (Blantons bourbon-neat) in a not-so clean glass. 2nd- served a steak a bit over cooked but taste was acceptable. 3rd- enjoyed glass of red wine (prisoner and always dependable) but when I asked for a glass of water, bartender served it up and it had something floating in it!! -another dirty glass!! I mean, I don't travel here often so I have to wonder how frequently the patrons are being served dirty glasses, ETC.!? Simply put, they are not cleaning eat/drink ware and that is scary! read more

Went for our anniversary and received efficient, friendly service, and our drinks never empty. But the biggest surprise was finding the BEST ribs in BR, and second best in my life of travel. Will be back very soon for my fix now that I have an addiction. read more

Had Alexander's for lunch on a Sunday. Smelled amazing outside due to the wood fired grill. Plenty of space with no wait. The service was what you'd expect from an upscale restaurant which was a pleasant surprise. I had the Caesar salad, Filet Mignon and a baked potato. The salad was great, the filet was at the perfect temp, but of a flavor I didn't love. The potato, however, was the best I've had at a restaurant. My wife had soup and a salad. Both were middle of the road; just ok. Our bill was $66 with the tip. I will try something else before coming back, but on price/flavor alone as the service was great. read more

Our party got treated like garbage tonight. There were five of us getting together for dinner, and they would not make a reservation. We got there, and we were told that it would be a 45 minute wait because they had a party of 25 that they were servicing. They had tables for four but not for five, and they refused to put two tables together. Half of the booths in the restaurant were empty, and they still told us it would be a 45 minute wait. There were plenty of places to seat us, but we were refused. Parties of two were getting accommodated, but they would not seat our party of five for 45 minutes. I'll never go back. This used to be one of my favorite places. The manager on duty was an unapologetic jerk. He was downright rude. read more

Very good restaurant. Yes, it's a chain BUT they make everything in house....down to the desserts. So don't let the "chain" part deter you. My favorites include the Maui steak, crab cakes, and grilled chicken salad. And you have to finish the meal with their amazing carrot cake! Yummm! Be warned, you will pay a pretty penny. Ate there last night while passing through on my way to Florida. I had the baby back ribs with tequilla beans and slaw, my wife had Asian salad, my nephew had the bacon swiss burger. The food was all excellent. The prices were a little on the high side. The service was terrible. I have had better service at Ihop. They switched waitstaff on us shortly after serving our drinks. After a very extended wait for our spinach dip appetizer, they arrived with our meals sans appetizer. Of course our second waiter offered to go back and get it. Of course I didn't. It was okay and some what over rated. The steak was good and the mashed potatoes were alright. Not somewhere I'd go regularly.

We visit Baton Rouge at least 8 to 10 times a year. With each visit we eat at J Alexander. We really have enjoyed the food and service in the past. Tonight was my worst experience. The tuna was not fresh. I told the server who offer something else. I ordered grilled shrimp. The shrimp were over cooked and dry. Not good maybe the best cook was off tonight. A friend and I visited J. Alexander's because she wanted a steak and we were near by. We ordered the shrimp appetizer, the shrimp were to salty to eat. She ordered steak brazzo's. I ordered the small prime rib. Her sauce covered filets were burned(not lightly charred or grill marks)I mean burned. The steak and sauce tasted like charcoal. My prime rib was cold (not a cool center, like cold as in the fat in the steak was white). The service was excellent as usual. Supremely disappointed in you he food. read more

Went today for a late lunch about 2 P.M. after spending all morning with mother at Mary Bird Cancer Center. We usually rave on j.'s, but this time it was disappointing to say the least. First of all, mother can't walk very far because of her heart problems, so we requested a booth BUT near a window since it's dark in there and her claustrophobia bothers her. Even though only one of those tables were taken, most weren't available because the AC vents were leaking. Momma ordered the spinach dip con queso and chips, which she enjoyed. I got the soup and salad for 14 bucks. I remember when it used to be 10. And the soup was lukewarm. Yea, I could have complained, sent it back, but after missing a regular lunchtime at the Dr., I was starving and ate it as is. The Alex salad was as it usually is. Unfortunately, we had an unwelcome lunch guest, crawling back and forth on the window sill and up and down the window. I notified the waiter when he came by again, and he hunted it down and disposed of it...on our table, from the booth behind momma. I lost my appetite for the rest of the salad and soup which was cold now. I ordered the chicken fingers to bring home to my husband for 12 dollars. The pieces were small and Raising Canes on the way home would have been a better deal. It was after the lunch rush so everything just seemed to be a little lackluster. Very sad in a restaurant we usually love. I would have expected a visit from the manager because of the inconvenience plus the roach. It wouldn't have hurt because they weren't no longer busy. One of the best places to get a steak (besides your own kitchen)......& the martini's. O M G. Yes, please!!!!!!!! & they serve you your drink with a sidecar, so you get the WHOLE drink that you paid for.
