This, being our halfway point from Michigan to Florida is where we always stop. J Alexander's is always included in that stop, and it was again very enjoyable. We were seated in a booth near the windows, which was great. Our server, Jacob, was quite accommodating and friendly. We had the Hong Kong shrimp as an appetizer and the entrées were Mr. Jack's Chicken and rattlesnake pasta. Both were excellent and the servings were more than enough. Stopped by 3/7/23 5:30pm to grab a drink and a quick bite. Had a salad and tried the 423 cocktail, drink was terrible, two sips (two small sips not a bit more, maybe 1/8 inch removed from glass) and didn't have any more. Female bartender asked what was wrong, I just said I didn't care for the drink, she said would you like me to make you something else, I told her no thank you, she said I'll remove from your bill, no sorry no nothing. Well nor did she remove from my bill, I paid $23 for an Alex $12 salad and two sips of a crappy drink. I paid the full bill, I'll never return to J Alexander Chattanooga restaurant again. I frequent the J Alexander's in Cordova TN (Memphis) and Cool Springs TN (Nashville), much much better and professional. Our poor experience was at Hamilton Place, Chattanooga, TN, and it began with a hostess who wanted to seat my wife and me in a six-person semi-circle booth (with tables of all sizes everywhere). She seemed miffed when I asked for a smaller table where we could actually see and hear one another. Once seated at the appropriate table, our waitress took our order and my dinner came to me cold and having barely touched the grill (Ahi Tuna). I sent it back to "be cooked," but it came back again only barely eatable and nearly tasteless. The side dishes were equally tasteless. To add more discomfort to the evening, our waitress copped an attitude. With so many good choices around, this restaurant could easily be avoided altogether and a better experience had, with far more reasonable prices. read more

The service was great, but the food was like something off a buffet. We had the smoked salmon dip which seemed like some pre-packaged thing, a salad which was nothing special, and then two steak dinners... one with fries and one with smashed potatoes. The fries were like the ones you get at Steak and Shake. The smashed potatoes lacked seasoning and, again, seemed like something off a buffet. The steaks were both overdone and tough. This used to be one of our favorite restaurants in town but took a dip 3-4 years ago and we still go on rare occasions to see if they are making the turn. Overall this experience could be better but we have had worse so may be there is hope. Nothing bad can be said about the atmosphere and the server was very nice. We were happy to see the Huavo rolls on the daily specials. We tried it for appetizer. The filling is generous but needs to be a little more firm. The chicken filling is more of shredded then grilled and sliced. The dipping sweet Asian sauce is ok but the previous white and orange sauces go better with rolls. The highlight is the side Alex salad was Hugh portion of fresh veggies and the blue cheese dressing was creamy and full of flavor. My cheeseburger was average at best so not worthy of $18 with a side. The tilamook cheese too thin and no flavor. The beef lady was thick but lacked flavor. I did not prefer the thousand island dressing and subbed it for bbq sauce which was average. The baked potato was large and topping on the side. The potato was large size looked great but was worm not hot so the butter would not melt. My wife got the swordfish with mango papaya. It was above average. We whee told it come on a bed of rice standard but it came out with mash potatoes and some sort of grilled tomatoes. Server was able to sub baked sweet potatoes Overall could be better. Will give them more time and hope the quality of few years back returns. read more

Blessed to find ONE of our favorite pre Covid restaurants continues to offer exemplary service, great appetizers and food! We were celebrating a close friends birthday Thursday night, and from start to finish, OMG! The hostess was very polite. Rochelle, our waitress, was professional, GREAT attitude, and even though the dinner guests were late, she was very sweet to take care of us and offer several suggestions. When our guests arrived, Rochelle was very patient with us, as.the ladies were "catching up" on the latest gossip? The steak roll appetizers were delicious, more than enough to feed 4 adults, with the jalapeño ranch dipping sauce the perfect compliment!( Note: I DO NOT eat jalapeños, but this sauce is excellent!) As before Covid, the portions were large, the chicken and shrimp cooked to perfection, my prime rib was served exactly like I love it, the most tender, moist, prime rib I've had in 20+ years dinning/living in Chattanooga! Stopped here for dinner after a day of traveling. Ate at the bar. Service was friendly and attentive. Had a great glass of wine, and my friend's old fashioned had the good Italian cherries! We enjoyed our meal, but the Key Lime pie was amazing! It was super fresh -- like homemade. I have been here so many times I thought I had already reviewed this place. This is a great date night restaurant. Candles on the tables and plenty of quiet places to be alone with your girl. The ribs are excellent here as is the prime rib. Great southern slaw and shoe string fries. Ribs and flavor are similar to Houston's which I love. This is a more upscale place and prices show that. A typical dinner for two with drinks can easily go over a $100. I have always been very pleased with the service here and today was no different. Quinlan was our server and he was excellent. Although the potato fries were too big for a side. I would've liked a little more space on my plate instead of so much potato. Having a toddler, my husband and I don't get a date night very often, but to celebrate my birthday we got a sitter and decided to treat ourselves to an evening of shopping and a nice steak dinner at J. Alexander's. We arrived around 8:45pm and were seated promptly, as the restaurant seemed pretty bare. We ordered drinks and looked over the menu. We hadn't eaten at this location in a long time, but immediately noticed that the menu seemed much more limited, which since Covid seems to be more commonplace so we didn't think much of it. The starters were limited to southwestern egg rolls, chicken tenders, queso dip, or emerald coast shrimp. We chose the shrimp and it was brought to our table in a very timely manner. We were expecting some sort of scampi dish but were surprised that it was a plate of small fried shrimp served with cocktail sauce and honey Dijon along with two long wooden skewers to eat them with. We thought it was a bit odd for more of a fine dining establishment but rolled with it. Nothing stood out about the dish, it was mediocre at best and we didn't finish it. That wasn't why we had come though, we were here for the STEAK. We noticed our waitress had seemed to disappear and hadn't yet taken our order for our entrees. About 15 minutes after ordering our starter she reappeared and I ordered the filet, my husband the Maui ribeye. Both medium rare. While waiting on our main course we continued enjoyed our drinks, which were delicious, and picking at the shrimp. I excused myself to the restroom. After returning we continued chatting and I ordered another drink. The drink came promptly. Now it was past 9:30 and the place had very few tables occupied as closing was at 10pm. Our waitress expressed concern over the long wait and said she wasn't sure what the hold up was but she would check on it, all without us asking, although we were perturbed as we had continued plans for the evening. Finally around 9:45 we received our steaks and I immediately commented to my husband how the outside of mine seemed very charred and crispy, but of course it's the inside that counts. I cut into my steak to reveal an extremely overcooked and completely well done filet. My husband cut into his ribeye and his was medium/medium well, most definitely also over cooked. We signaled our waitress who was very apologetic and said she would go to the kitchen to sort it out. At this point we didn't want to wait even longer for our meal, as we had friends waiting on us, so we asked for the steaks to be taken off our bill and we would be happy to pay for our starters, my salad (which wasn't delivered to the table until the steaks came) and our drinks. When she brought the bill I asked to speak to the manager so she could put eyes on our steaks and hopefully make sure something like this didn't happen in the future. The "manager" comes to our table, a young blonde woman, and we show her our steaks. I told her we are fine paying for everything else but I wanted to make her aware of the situation and how it was a huge bummer because this was supposed to be a rare treat for us. She immediately begins making EXCUSES, says my husbands steak looks like that because of the type of marinade they use (not true) and that we had only waited 14 minutes from the time our ticket was received to the time our food came to the table. If that was the case then our waitress must have forgotten to turn our order in because we waited at least half an hour or more. Then she expresses annoyance for us not wanting to wait on new steaks and leave instead. NO APOLOGY for anything. We didn't want a free meal, only an apology and assurance that it wouldn't happen again. Absolutely ridiculous and poor management. I didn't get a picture of the ribeye but I've included one of the sad filet I received. We will most definitely not be returning to this location and will be sure to tell our friends of our experience. read more

It's a chain, but it's delicious. From the moment you walk in you're treated with a certain level of class and it just adds to the experience. We started with the spinach con queso with it delicious. The pick it's served with just adds to the flavor of the dip, so kudos to that. My go to is the Cypress Salad, fried chicken, avocado, bacon, homemade croutons and ranch dressing. It's so filling and soooo good. Lastly, we always end the meal with the carrot cake that's served hot and melt in your mouth goodness. J's is our go to restaurant when we want something great and don't have to worry about the experience being good or bad. read more

You know what? I love J. Alexander's and I don't care who knows it! I try to eat locally, but dang it, J. Alexander's is just that good. I've been for many Happy Hours and their martinis are amazing. last Sunday was my birthday and I chose to come here for dinner with my girlfriends. Why? Two things - the mac & cheese and the carrot cake. Yup, for reals. I've had many great meals here, from the steak to the pork tenderloin, but I was really just wanting some cheesy, gooey, carby (I just made that one up), comfort food. I did have shrimp, and my two sides were, wait for it, mac & cheese and mac & cheese. LOL. I couldn't eat it all and had the rest for lunch the next day. So I have a birthday tiara that I wear, of course, on my birthday. Our server, Quinn, who was delightful, deduced it was a special occasion. A little later on during our meal, a manager came by and asked how everything was and said she heard it was my birthday. She gave me a card that was personally handwritten and it offered well-wishes AND a complimentary slice of carrot cake. How awesome is that? That is great customer service. They could have just given me the free cake, but they took an extra step and gave me a card. Loved that extra touch. Thank you! Now, I'm sure I've talked about this carrot cake before. It is by far the best carrot cake I've ever had. It's gooey, and decadent and they serve it to you warm. It's like no carrot cake you've ever had before. I think it's my favorite dessert. If you want the best service go to J. Alexander's. This was the best service that I have ever experienced in any restaurant...ever. The service was simply amazing! Four of us visited today for a late lunch and had a good meal. We ordered the Mexico City Spinach Con Queso chips and dip for our appetizer. The dip was excellent, but we ran out of chips before we ran out of dip. I ordered the Cajun Swordfish and Mac & Cheese. The Swordfish was grilled and had some light seasoning. I don't think this dish deserved to be called Cajun and recommend adding some real Cajun seasoning to the fish. The swordfish was good and the portion size was large, but the seasoning missed the mark. The Mac & Cheese side item was good, but I think it was a little runny to me. The highlight of the meal was dessert. We ordered two pieces of carrot cake to share and it was so good!!! I will claim that this was the best carrot cake that I have consumed in my life. The cake and sauce were heated and portion size was large. The cake was very moist and the sauce was so good it could be bottled and sold commercially. I would go back just for dessert!!! read more

The bartenders when o arrived were not busy but did not acknowledge me while standing infront of them, then took another 10 minutes to track down someone who handled take out and get my food. I got some sort of rice and a dipping sauce. No fillet. No wasabi mayonnaise. The manager should pay attention to his/her customers. Best carrot cake I have had in a very long time probably 20 years since I was in college living in Louisiana. I ordered the Ahi salad It was delicious. Spinach dip was delicious but the carrot cake blew me away. Atmosphere was dim lit very nice place to take your wife to. My visit today was a TOTAL disappointment. I am very familiar with a number of J Alexander Restaurants and I will never go back to this one again. I ordered the French Dip with Au Jus and I got simply a diluted beef broth. I had to use my own glass of red wine to make it properly. The manager indicated that this was the way they make it. Hmmm. I also ordered French Press Coffee and a brewed cup of coffee was brought to the table. I had them take it back. In addition, I was seated at a table that overlooked an empty wine refrigerator that was COVERED in fingerprints and gunk. It hadn't been cleaned in - I don't know how long. If that is that dirty and gross and out for the public to see - what else is dirty that you DON'T see? No way will I frequent this establishment.
