We had a great dinner here celebrating my fiancés birthday! We started with the Hong Kong Shrimp which came with a lot of shrimp, and we liked the spicy sauce! I got the crispy chicken platter and changed out my sides for the loaded baked potato and the broccoli- everything tasted great and it was so much food! My fiancé always gets the French Dip and per usual he was very happy with his meal! There were a lot of wait staff who stopped by our table to refill our water, take plates, and bring us our check when our waitress was busy which was nice. Overall a great experience! read more

Let me jump right in and say that J. Alexander exceeded my expectation!! I'd heard the name before and knew it was a chain restaurant but I had never been. My colleagues from MI (I was in town visiting) chose this for dinner on a Monday evening. We were a party of 12 but we had to sit at two different tables. That was fine with us because we made the reservation a few mins before we even got there so the fact that they were able to sit us was great. I was told that the spinach con queso was the best so we ordered that, deviled eggs and the lobster dip (I think that's what it was but it came with toasted bread) to start. I also ordered the whale flower but it was too grape-fruity for me (well duh Chi that's the main ingredient) so our waitress took it back with no hesitation. For my entree, I got blackened salmon with a side of broccoli. The appetizers were allllll superb. That spinach con queso was by far the best I've ever had and granted I'm lactose intolerant and should not be eating it, the sacrifice was well worth it. The deviled eggs could have been better but we got it with no bacon and apparently the bacon is what adds to the flavor. The lobster dip was good too. Honestly, I was so full that I took my salmon to go and never ate it. I forgot it in my hotel but nonetheless, everything was great. Only reason I gave it 4 stars was the servers sort of just dropped our food on the table without asking who had what, so they kept messing it up. Besides that, no complaints at all and I plan on going back again to the one in Houston. read more

This is a very late review but I was so disappointed in our Christmas Eve dinner there, I may never go back. This is our tradition for 12/24 for almost 10 years, so I made reservations 6 weeks in advance. We got seated in the bar and it was so loud we couldn't even converse. They ran out of bar glasses so one of us waited 20 minutes for a cocktail, which came after the appetizer. And the last straw was they were out of pork tenderloin at 6 pm on 12/24. All in all, an extremely disappointing holiday experience . We'll be making a new dinner tradition next year. read more

Perfect place for date night with the low lighting... it is a fine dining experience at a more affordable price. Wait-staff is always giving great recommendations on what to eat. This place is amazing and always full on the weekends. The food is wonderful and I like the specialty menu because there's always something fun to try. The carrot cake is probably two million calories but ridiculously good. We enjoyed the salads as well. For what the restaurant is the price is very reasonable. Highly recommend! read more

We made a reservation on Resy. I received a text to confirm my reservation, a reminder, and one to tell me that when we arrive to either text or call to check-in. They don't want people crowding the wait area. Service was not very good. We ordered ice tea and it was forgotten. Once it was brought to our table, there was no lemon. We used to get refills before we even needed them but this time, we had to ask. We ordered the smoked salmon dip (comes with toast points). We finished the toast points and asked for a few more so we could enjoy it with the remaining dip. In the past, we would get the toast points promptly but this time we had to wait awhile (I went to the restroom and came back and still had to wait). We ordered the prime rib with baked potato and ahi tuna burger with orzo. The prime rib wasn't as flavorful as it used to be. The potato came out plain - usually when we order, we are asked if we want the fixings (butter, cheese, bacon, etc.). Not this time. We had to ask. The ahi tuna burger was good but the bun is too thick and the portion of the orzo appears smaller. We were still eating our meal and we were asked if we wanted dessert. When we said no, our waitress gave us our bill. We were well under our "eating time limit" so I don't know why the rush. Usually, our plates are cleared and then we are asked if we want dessert. The food, our initial greeting and waitress were phenomenal. The salmon and broccoli were fantastic as was her salad with chicken. Now, the issue: the guy next to us dressed in jeans and a hoodie (with the hood over his head at a nice restaurant, this is not a coney in Detroit) smelled of marijuana and kept going outside to smoke more and then come back in and sit down. After a bit, he said heck with going outside to smoke, he just lit up his "joint" IN the restaurant AT the table. The waiter certainly noticed it as he served him closely several times during his smoke session. We sat right next to him and that's all we could smell is DOPE. I decided to stop by the first restaurant I saw in the parking lot shared by the theater. As I did not have a reservation, the hostess gave me the option of a 30-minute wait or sit immediately at the bar. I chose to join the other diners at the bar. While perusing the menus, I was about to order the steak off of the special menu. That is when I noticed the steak being eaten by the customer sitting next to me. As a result, I ended up ordering the New York Strip with the Not Your Ordinary Mac & Cheese. Unfortunately, my steak was overcooked. Even under the dim lights, I could tell it was cooked medium when I always order them medium-rare. The bartender who took the order never followed up after the food was served, so I never had a chance to inform him. As for the mac & cheese, when it was first served, the temperature was too warm to taste it. Once it cooled down enough, I discovered the mac & cheese was an acquired taste and I would have preferred the more ordinary variety. I had time before the movie started and ordered dessert and coffee. The server dropped off the chocolate cake and a French press without mentioning getting a mug. Until another bartender came by with a coffee mug, I thought I had to drink the coffee straight from the French press. By the time I had left, the diner to the left ordered the same steak as I. The diner to the right ordered the same dessert. While a picture is worth a thousand words, smelling and seeing the food a few inches away must be worth at least a million. In the end, I am not sure if I would dine here again. For the cost per person, I expect a much more attentive service. read more

Oh the prime rib! The seasoning on the outside is amazing. It was cooked to perfection. The horseradish sauce was delicious. Then the Mac and cheese. Yum! I have love this place forever. In fact, I usually tell people that there's not one bad thing on the menu. Today was different. I can say that I unequivocally had the worst steak that I've had in my life. It was cooked perfectly! But the meat was like chewing on leather. It was the ribeye. I think it's called steak Maui. I'm a regular at J's but today just wasn't it. We had great friendly service as usual but the steak was not good today. As you can see they got a little sear happy with the filet. It's almost burnt enough to resemble a hokey puck. I didn't send it back but I really should have. I ordered it medium and it was cooked medium but it had no moisture. It was extremely dry, I'm guessing from the over sear. So very disappointed today. Perhaps I'll just stick with the steak Maui. read more

The last time we were here was pre-Covid and I have to say the service and the food is still at its best! From the moment you walk in, someone is there to assist and greet you at the door and to make sure you get seated. Please make sure you make a reservation ahead of time due to the fact that the restaurant was packed even for the lunch. It's quick and easy to make the online reservation. Once you are seated there is a QR code for you to view the online menu. Your server will be ready to take your order for you and he was nice enough to explain the complete menu. We order the butterfly filets, prime rib, and jacks crispy chicken. We also ordered a salad with our meals. My friend loved her filets and was very happy with her order. I ordered the jack crispy chicken thinking it was fried chicken, but it wasn't. It was chicken tenders? I was a little disappointed at first, but once I took my first bite they were very good! My friend who ordered the prime rib was not too happy. It came to the table looking a little dry. He complained that it was too tough to chew and it was dry. Horrible experience tonight. Paid 20 dollars for a salad on a carryout order that had no dressing. When I called the manager Don was incredibly rude over the phone and did not even offer for me to come back to get my food. Stayed on hold for the entire duration of my family's Mothers day dinner that was ruined because of their poor customer service. Will never return and will never order again. Yesterday I went to the Livonia location and was having a nice time, great ambiance until we found a huge piece of glass in queso chips and dip. And when I say huge it looked like a nice size piece of ice. The piece of glass was almost eaten. I was able to speak with the manager, but I don't think that it was taken seriously. The bill was covered by the manager Shawn. However, my finger was cut. Nothing serious but it's just the point of how this happened. One of my favorite places. The drinks and food are always on point. I love that their martinis always come with "a little bit extra" on the side. Stopped by for a quick bite at the bar. Was able to sit immediately which was awesome because sit down service was about an hour wait. The bar staff are very friendly and efficient. I had the pear martini, salmon dip and the Alex salad which in my opinion is one of the best salas out here! I recently learned that the salmon dip is an in restaurant order only after trying (and failing) to order it for takeout on NYE. Everything was delicious and if you ever get the pear martini I highly recommend eating the ginger garnish. Perfect spicy end to the delicious drink! read more
