Now, the issue: the guy next to us dressed in jeans and a hoodie (with the hood over his head at a nice restaurant, this is not a coney in Detroit) smelled of marijuana and kept going outside to smoke more and then come back in and sit down. After a bit, he said heck with going outside to smoke, he just lit up his "joint" IN the restaurant AT the table. The waiter certainly noticed it as he served him closely several times during his smoke session. We sat right next to him and that's all we could smell is DOPE. Let me just say, I told the waitress the salmon was dry and crispy like it's been sitting under the light for a while. I was so hungry when I got there and the food took a while to come out so if I had sent it back it would have been a longer wait. So I kept it. Clean and convenient location with a clean and relaxed atmosphere. Our server, Jennifer, was very attentive and did a good job, but was very serious and came across as acting too robotic. We made a reservation on Resy. I received a text to confirm my reservation, a reminder, and one to tell me that when we arrive to either text or call to check-in. They don't want people crowding the wait area. Service was not very good. We ordered ice tea and it was forgotten. Once it was brought to our table, there was no lemon. We used to get refills before we even needed them but this time, we had to ask. We ordered the smoked salmon dip (comes with toast points). We finished the toast points and asked for a few more so we could enjoy it with the remaining dip. In the past, we would get the toast points promptly but this time we had to wait awhile (I went to the restroom and came back and still had to wait). We ordered the prime rib with baked potato and ahi tuna burger with orzo. The prime rib wasn't as flavorful as it used to be. The potato came out plain - usually when we order, we are asked if we want the fixings (butter, cheese, bacon, etc.). Not this time. We had to ask. The ahi tuna burger was good but the bun is too thick and the portion of the orzo appears smaller. We were still eating our meal and we were asked if we wanted dessert. When we said no, our waitress gave us our bill. We were well under our "eating time limit" so I don't know why the rush. Usually, our plates are cleared and then we are asked if we want dessert. I decided to stop by the first restaurant I saw in the parking lot shared by the theater. As I did not have a reservation, the hostess gave me the option of a 30-minute wait or sit immediately at the bar. I chose to join the other diners at the bar. While perusing the menus, I was about to order the steak off of the special menu. That is when I noticed the steak being eaten by the customer sitting next to me. As a result, I ended up ordering the New York Strip with the Not Your Ordinary Mac & Cheese. Unfortunately, my steak was overcooked. Even under the dim lights, I could tell it was cooked medium when I always order them medium-rare. The bartender who took the order never followed up after the food was served, so I never had a chance to inform him. As for the mac & cheese, when it was first served, the temperature was too warm to taste it. Once it cooled down enough, I discovered the mac & cheese was an acquired taste and I would have preferred the more ordinary variety. I had time before the movie started and ordered dessert and coffee. The server dropped off the chocolate cake and a French press without mentioning getting a mug. Until another bartender came by with a coffee mug, I thought I had to drink the coffee straight from the French press. By the time I had left, the diner to the left ordered the same steak as I. The diner to the right ordered the same dessert. While a picture is worth a thousand words, smelling and seeing the food a few inches away must be worth at least a million. In the end, I am not sure if I would dine here again. For the cost per person, I expect a much more attentive service. read more

Horrible experience tonight. Paid 20 dollars for a salad on a carryout order that had no dressing. When I called the manager Don was incredibly rude over the phone and did not even offer for me to come back to get my food. Stayed on hold for the entire duration of my family's Mothers day dinner that was ruined because of their poor customer service. Will never return and will never order again. And when I say huge it looked like a nice size piece of ice. The piece of glass was almost eaten. I was able to speak with the manager, but I don't think that it was taken seriously. We order the butterfly filets, prime rib, and jacks crispy chicken. We also ordered a salad with our meals. My friend loved her filets and was very happy with her order. I ordered the jack crispy chicken thinking it was fried chicken, but it wasn't. It was chicken tenders? I was a little disappointed at first, but once I took my first bite they were very good! From the moment you walk in, someone is there to assist and greet you at the door and to make sure you get seated. Please make sure you make a reservation ahead of time due to the fact that the restaurant was packed even for the lunch. It's quick and easy to make the online reservation. Once you are seated there is a QR code for you to view the online menu. Your server will be ready to take your order for you and he was nice enough to explain the complete menu. One of my favorite places. The drinks and food are always on point. I love that their martinis always come with "a little bit extra" on the side. Stopped by for a quick bite at the bar. Was able to sit immediately which was awesome because sit down service was about an hour wait. The bar staff are very friendly and efficient. I had the pear martini, salmon dip and the Alex salad which in my opinion is one of the best salas out here! I recently learned that the salmon dip is an in restaurant order only after trying (and failing) to order it for takeout on NYE. This review is related to customer service only. I purchased a gift card online for my sister on Christmas Eve. She attempted to use the card today at the Livonia location only to be told it wasn't activated and she needed a code. It seems the email she received with the gift card no longer displayed this code. But, instead of attempting to offer support and understanding, the manager and staff treated her as if she was being untruthful and looking for a free meal! Appalling stuff. She felt humiliated about the issue and their treatment and called me. I then called this location as I purchased the gift card, only to be told by the manager it was a third-party issue and to call some bizarre company about the matter. Not helpful at all - and why on earth am I responsible for the issue when the staff work there for their employer and customers?! So, I then called the J. Alexander corporate office in Texas and a very nice woman, Melissa, confirmed my gift card order purchase number and re-sent the code to my email, as well as to my sister's email. This took 5 minutes. So, the Livonia manager Sean and his team couldn't be bothered at 2:30pm when it's not even that busy, to say, Hey, we can actually just call our corporate office to fix this because you're a customer and it's our job to support you about an issue with our employer/restaurant's name on it while you're sitting here!!! After this issue was resolved and the card accepted, my sister let me know the manager and staff still offered no apologies about the issue or delay, and she felt unwelcome and angry. She loves J. Alexander's but will not return to this location. Do better, people! read more

This is one of our favorite restaurants for lunch and dinner. Over the years, we've been here a lot and we've never had a single issue. That is, until this past weekend. Our reservation for my birthday dinner was made 6 hours in advance, and our only request was to sit near the bar, so that we could watch the Michigan vs Michigan state game during our dinner. We arrived about 10 minutes early and noticed 2 empty booths right near the bar and tv's, so we assumed 1 of them was for us. Nope, we watched them sit 2 other couples there. Finally after waiting about 20 minutes they called us to go to our table. They took us ALL the way to the back... literally as far as possible away from the tv's. When I mentioned it to the hostess, she didn't seem to care at all. So we asked for a manager. Courtney (one of the managers) came and was very apologetic. She admitted that our request was right there clear as day and the hostesses must've looked right over it. She was quick to get us seated in a booth right in the bar area by the TV's (luckily a family was leaving within 15 minutes of this all happening). Our server was Shannon, and she was great from the start. Courtney offered us free appetizers and dessert for the issue. We ordered calamari, but were brought queso and chips. They left that with us and then also brought the calamari. We then ordered our meals... filet mignon cooked medium, and loaded baked potatoes. Plus our dirty martini's. When our food came out, my steak was over cooked, well done. And his was under cooked, like medium rare. Shannon was quick to grab them and send them back to be re-cooked for us. They brought steaks #2 out, and they were both still not right. Shannon waited for us to cut into them, and before we could even comment she was like nope, those still aren't right. She was very apologetic and took them back again. Now they bring out steaks #3 which were finally right, but by this time we were just ready for boxes. Mind you they kept bringing out new potatoes every time too, lol. So we were pretty full from our 2 apps and the potatoes. Plus they were sending me with a huge slice of carrot cake! Another manager, Heather approached us and was also very apologetic. She immediately told us that we had no bill for the evening, besides our 2 drinks. We told her that wasn't necessary, especially with being frequent flyers and knowing this has never happened to us there before. So what should've been about a $200 bill, was only a $31 bill. We made it a point to let our server Shannon know how great she was, and that we know none of this was her fault. We handed her the bill with a $100 bill and told her she was all set. She was in shock.... and as a server / bartender, i completely understood why. I know this doesn't happen often when there's been a bad experience. If your bad experience was not your servers fault, please make sure you take good care of them and express your appreciation for all they did for you. Between Shannon and the 2 managers, Courtney and Heather, our not so great experience was completely made right, and we will definitely still be returning.
