This review is related to customer service only. I purchased a gift card online for my sister on Christmas Eve. She attempted to use the card today at the Livonia location only to be told it wasn't activated and she needed a code. It seems the email she received with the gift card no longer displayed this code. But, instead of attempting to offer support and understanding, the manager and staff treated her as if she was being untruthful and looking for a free meal! Appalling stuff. She felt humiliated about the issue and their treatment and called me. I then called this location as I purchased the gift card, only to be told by the manager it was a third-party issue and to call some bizarre company about the matter. Not helpful at all - and why on earth am I responsible for the issue when the staff work there for their employer and customers?! So, I then called the J. Alexander corporate office in Texas and a very nice woman, Melissa, confirmed my gift card order purchase number and re-sent the code to my email, as well as to my sister's email. This took 5 minutes. So, the Livonia manager Sean and his team couldn't be bothered at 2:30pm when it's not even that busy, to say, Hey, we can actually just call our corporate office to fix this because you're a customer and it's our job to support you about an issue with our employer/restaurant's name on it while you're sitting here!!! After this issue was resolved and the card accepted, my sister let me know the manager and staff still offered no apologies about the issue or delay, and she felt unwelcome and angry. She loves J. Alexander's but will not return to this location. Do better, people! read more

We love J. Alexander's. It's one of our favorite anniversary spots! The atmosphere is very romantic with the gas lanterns and low lighting. I had a mojito and it was delicious! My husband ordered a Moscow mule and it wasn't his favorite. It had a really strong ginger taste! You can tell they use real ginger, which I love! But if spicy ginger isn't your thing I'd steer clear of that one. We got the calamari which was perfectly fried. Light and delicious. They give you a giant bowl of marinara! You only need about 1/3 of what they give you. But you never run out. I give four stars because every time we come here the steak is over cooked. The pictured steak was ordered "medium rare" and is a perfect medium. We just know that when we come here we need to order our steaks a degree below where we actually would like them to be. My guess is that they sit in the window too long before actually getting to their guests because nothing is every hot, just warm. read more

This is one of our favorite restaurants for lunch and dinner. Over the years, we've been here a lot and we've never had a single issue. That is, until this past weekend. Our reservation for my birthday dinner was made 6 hours in advance, and our only request was to sit near the bar, so that we could watch the Michigan vs Michigan state game during our dinner. We arrived about 10 minutes early and noticed 2 empty booths right near the bar and tv's, so we assumed 1 of them was for us. Nope, we watched them sit 2 other couples there. Finally after waiting about 20 minutes they called us to go to our table. They took us ALL the way to the back... literally as far as possible away from the tv's. When I mentioned it to the hostess, she didn't seem to care at all. So we asked for a manager. Courtney (one of the managers) came and was very apologetic. She admitted that our request was right there clear as day and the hostesses must've looked right over it. She was quick to get us seated in a booth right in the bar area by the TV's (luckily a family was leaving within 15 minutes of this all happening). Our server was Shannon, and she was great from the start. Courtney offered us free appetizers and dessert for the issue. We ordered calamari, but were brought queso and chips. They left that with us and then also brought the calamari. We then ordered our meals... filet mignon cooked medium, and loaded baked potatoes. Plus our dirty martini's. When our food came out, my steak was over cooked, well done. And his was under cooked, like medium rare. Shannon was quick to grab them and send them back to be re-cooked for us. They brought steaks #2 out, and they were both still not right. Shannon waited for us to cut into them, and before we could even comment she was like nope, those still aren't right. She was very apologetic and took them back again. Now they bring out steaks #3 which were finally right, but by this time we were just ready for boxes. Mind you they kept bringing out new potatoes every time too, lol. So we were pretty full from our 2 apps and the potatoes. Plus they were sending me with a huge slice of carrot cake! Another manager, Heather approached us and was also very apologetic. She immediately told us that we had no bill for the evening, besides our 2 drinks. We told her that wasn't necessary, especially with being frequent flyers and knowing this has never happened to us there before. So what should've been about a $200 bill, was only a $31 bill. We made it a point to let our server Shannon know how great she was, and that we know none of this was her fault. We handed her the bill with a $100 bill and told her she was all set. She was in shock.... and as a server / bartender, i completely understood why. I know this doesn't happen often when there's been a bad experience. If your bad experience was not your servers fault, please make sure you take good care of them and express your appreciation for all they did for you. Between Shannon and the 2 managers, Courtney and Heather, our not so great experience was completely made right, and we will definitely still be returning. We ordered carry out for our 32nd anniversary this week, due to working hours we were unable to have a sit down dinner and was unhappy when I realized that they charged a 5% packaging fee for carryout on top of the tip. During the stay-home order and after a long work week, comfort food was a must. There are a number of places in the neighborhood that fit the bill but I was in the mood for the chicken tenders platter from J. Alexander's. Ordering is easy from their online system. The menu is limited (fewer apps, salads, and no fish entrées, though family-sized meals are now offered) but there is still a decent choice for numerous tastes. Some of my faves are still listed, including the prime rib sandwich, the prime rib dinner, crab cakes, and ribs. And of course, the Mr. Jack's Crispy Chicken platter was on the menu - yay! I went with that and the loaded baked potato. Other choices in sides include French fries (amazing here, BTW), coleslaw (I love the version here), broccoli, or mashed potatoes. Unfortunately, the mac and cheese side is not part of the meal but it can be ordered separately - believe me, it is worth it. When I reached the restaurant for curbside pick-up, I was impressed by the well-organized system that was put in place. At each parking spot, a sign was posted letting the driver know to call the restaurant (the phone number was listed). Each sign also had a parking spot number, so drivers can direct the runner to their cars. I waited for less than 5 minutes before a masked runner came to my car and placed my dinner inside. At home, I found that the food was packaged well (especially all the fixings for my loaded baked potato). More importantly, the food was, as expected, delicious. J. Alexander's continues to execute flawlessly. read more

I've always been a fan of J. Alexander's so when a friend suggested it for a bday lunch I was in. We both arrived on time and didn't need reservations for 1pm. It was almost fully packed but there was no wait for a table. I think a lot of executive types come here for lunch by the looks of the crowd. We sat down and were given two menus a daily special and regular menu. Most things looked good but I had a real taste for their wild rice and orzo pasta. It's a side dish but I had it once before years ago and have not forgotten it. I was originally going to get a burger and then I saw that on the specials menu they had an ahi tuna burger prepared medium rare with lemon aoli on a brioche bun with wild rice and orzo as the side. It sounded too good to pass up. I love tuna, aoli and the wild rice and orzo pasta. When it arrived at the table the portion was very large and they served it open faced with the aoli and greens on the top of the bun. I put it together and cut it in half because it's a big portion. It was really good. I wouldn't say it was great though. The seasoning on the tuna was lite but good and the lemon aoli didn't really have much or a lemon flavor to it in my opinion. I personally would have liked a bit more zest to it. That being said it was good and something I had never had before so it gets points for originality. The wild rice and orzo pasta was EXACTLY how I remembered it after all these years. To me that's impressive and I'm glad to know that this higher end chain has maintained its standards years in between visits. For dessert we decided to splurge and each got the key lime pie. It's the best key lime pie I've had since the one I had in key west. It was creamy and lite with a spiced and crumbly crust. This is where the extra star comes in to make it a 5 Star last lunch. My fiancé and I decided to try J. Alexander's for my birthday. (Last min. change of plans) I was thinking it may be in the realm of Ruth Chris but it was not. We did not have reservations since this was a last minute decision and it was Saturday around 8:30 pm so it was completely understandable that there was only bar seating which we were completely okay with. There was about a 30 min wait before two seats opened up and as we were about to take our seats and a extremely rude woman approached us and said "We were here before you." We let them politely know we saw them come in after us and she proceeded to not walk away and made a very uncomfortable scene. It was completely uncouth, and inappropriate. The other guests at the bar were seemingly uncomfortable and hurried to leave and politely offered their seats. The bartenders didn't know what was going on they looked very confused, as they did not hear what happened and we we're certainly not going to say anything and further escalate the situation with this unhinged woman standing waiting for the chairs next to us. Our waitress/ bartender was confused so I don't fully blame her for not being ecstatic to now serve us but from our point of view it is my birthday and we were just attacked in a nicer restaurant by some lady over first come first serve bar seating. This should never have happened here and to be honest it needs to be better organized. We tried to make the best of out of the situation and wanted to enjoy the evening and my birthday. My fiancé loves chocolate martinis and he loved his drink. We started out with Caesar salads which were great. Love when they use chilled plates, and the dressing was light and had amazing flavor. I ordered the Steak Frites and my fiancé ordered a filet. My steak was very chewy. I was actually embarrassed because my knife wasn't sharp enough to not make my plate go back and forth to cut this steak. Flavor wasn't there at all. My fiancés filet although cooked perfectly medium rare was very awkwardly cut that it looked like an octagon ball shape where the outside was very charred and any seasoning was completely burnt off. It came with a side of Bernaise sauce that had a "seafood" flavor in it. Didn't taste like a classic Bernaise. We weren't really asked how everything was going and we didn't feel comfortable and could not wait to leave. To be honest, I wish we would have just left. I'm disappointed to say that on my last visit, November 10, 2023, the food was terrible. I ordered the steak Maui prepared medium, it came back well done. I sent it back and the second steak I could hardly cut through it and it had pieces of black charred on it in chunks. My husband ordered the crispy jack chicken, and most of his pieces were hard and dry. He ate the portions he could and took the rest in a carry out. This is my first bad experience here I may give it another try, but was very disappointed to say the least. I expected a manager to come to the table out of concern but that did not happen. The only restitution that was offered was to take it off the bill. Well that to me was common sense because we were not paying for something that we did not eat. Our waitress apologized in the end but it was not her fought, it was the cook, the person that prepared the steak. Really disappointing especially since we planned a date night together and my mouth was watering for the steak Maui. I met two friends for dinner here tonight. We had an open table reservation but given the fact that traffic was against me and they were seated before our reservation, I'm not sure if was needed. We all had water, nothing special; however, through out our time there, our waitress made sure that our water was always full. And she was obtrusive or frustrated about our drinking only water. Definitely an awesome waitress. I was the only one to order a salad because my two friends were concerned about the whole romaine lettuce thing. My feeling was, it is a restaurant that is serving romaine lettuce, I'm sure they have the lettuce coming from a safe location. I was torn between three different choices, two of them were specials and one was a regular menu option. I asked our waitress what she recommended and went with the Tucson Steak and Smashed Potatoes. It's been a few years since I've been to J. Alexander's. My intention was to have Mr. Jack's Crispy chicken as my entree since they're the reason I came here, but we shared it as an appetizer. The chicken tenders have remained consistently good over the years. My friend had the ahi tuna burger with orzo and wild rice and liked it. I had the fresh fish sandwich with Not Your Ordinary Mac & Cheese. I sent the first sandwich back because the fish was overcooked. The second one was fine but okay on taste. I ordered the steak and fries. I asked for medium well but it was more medium. I'm not a big steak eater but I had recently had amazing steak in Cancun so I still had a good appetite for steak when a visited JA. The steak was super tough to cut and the flavor was basic. I did ask for steak sauce (I know chefs frown upon this) and it never came. My husband got the Maui steak and it was pretty good. The service was not ok. It's one of a Michiganders fav places to eat! It's comparable to Houston's. The ambiance is welcoming and dim for a more intimate setting. If you love steak, I'd suggest ordering the steak Maui. I ordered the Crabcakes with Smashed Potatoes and side salad! It's two decent size cakes (can't beat the size I would get in New Orleans LOL) Still they were fresh and well seasoned! I love a good mashed potato with chunks of potatoes and skins in it! The salad was a spring mix with cheese, cucumbers, tomatoes and bacon (NO PORK ON MY FORK- no bacon please! ) with ranch dressing.
