Had heard mixed opinions on this place before going...everything from bad lighting, to it being too loud, to the portions being too small or too large. Every part of our experience was great...service, food, atmosphere...everything. Yes it's dimly lit and there is no "No Talking Policy" but there's plenty of light to see anything you need to...like where to aim your chip when your going in for a scoop of the AMAZING Queso Spinach Dip...and let's be real if noise in a restaurant bothers you take a hot pocket to the library. Out of a party of 4, everyone was more than satisfied with the quality and quantity of food. One person in my party asked for an option that wasn't on the menu and our server accommodated her request without hesitation or a trip to the kitchen to make sure it was doable . Glasses were never empty and servers were more than helpful the whole time we were there. DESERT!!! We got both Key Lime Pie and "Powerful Stuff" (ice creamy, chocolaty, caramely goodness) and both were FANTASTIC. I'll for sure be going back!!! read more

We had a great meal and great service from Amanda. She was helpful, attentive and extremely friendly in serving us. The food was outstanding as we had the tuna steak rare and the French Dip sandwich. If you're vegetarian, they have THE BEST veggie burger in the city in my opinion! Seasoned well and just delicious! I love the ambiance of this place and when I was eating meat the options were good. Ehh...not my thing. This place has a stiff vibe . The crowd is a business casual and the menu is pretty bland. Very few selections and the place seems to not have a theme. It reminds me of a old 80s buffet...not nice at all. And for such a small menu the prices are high. Not good IMO ! read more

I have not been to J. Alexander's in years because I moved to a location that didn't have one. My wife and I used to love frequenting this place. Although I have been here several times, I have never had their prime rib. This place use to be so good, one of my consistent fav restaurant that would over deliver each time. However, my last 3 visits have been disappointing. Their service, quality, & taste has declined during each visit. I always order Filet Mignon, however, the cut of their steaks have been poor. The steak was so tough; I thought they gave me a shoulder cut. Also, my mash potatoes was cold, as well. I politely mentioned this to my server. The manager greeted me, she seemed nice. I showed her how hard it was to cut my steak & Filet Mignon shouldn't be this hard to cut or chew. She mentioned it's Filet Mignon Medallions not just Filet Mignon , (high hopes are steadily declining). She replaced my food. I waited an additional 20 minutes only to be given a similar poor cut & texture steak as the last. Not only was it tough, it was poorly seasoned & my steamed broccoli was hard. The only good thing I can say is my food was hot & the sever was fairly ok (she wasn't terrible). I didn't finish my food. The manager never came back to ask how was the food and service. Food quality & costumer service is no longer a priority at this restaurant. I attempted to give J Alexander 2 additional tries after the 1st poor visit, but it's 3 strikes at this is point. So, this will be my last visiting J Alexander. Not wasting my time or money anymore. Save your money & your time by skipping this restaurant. Superb date night or business lunch place. The food at J Alexander's is outstanding, but it is the SERVICE that really stands out here! Something so rare to see these days. Positively impeccable and consistent! Have been for lunch, dinner and even just dessert/coffee and always the same experience: friendly, professional and very knowledgeable servers who are very attentive but do not "hover". I have never waited too long for anything I've needed. The managers are top-notch too... my husband's salmon came out a little too rare for his taste and manager Nick came by to ensure his satisfaction, wearing a stylish suit and tie. Very professional and impressive. And the food!! Wow. I love the Thai Kai Salad and the Crispy Shrimp Tacos! Their deviled egg appetizer is amazing too, topped with candied bacon pieces. And if you ever catch the Monterey mushroom soup as the soup of the day, it's creamy mushroom perfection. As many others have noted, the warmed carrot cake is TO DIE FOR and they serve THE BEST full-bodied, smooth brew coffee. I had to ask the brand, it is so good! You have to try this place! Saturday evening, I had the grilled salmon with herb butter and the wild rice and orzo side. (It was a special and not on the menu.) Every dish, from appetizer to salad to side to main to dessert is top notch. A trip to J.Alex is a preview of heaven. Please do not eat for two days prior to visiting. The portions are supersized (as are prices). Saturday instead of a normal piece of carrot cake, I think the piece dropped at my table weighed seven pounds. The starter salad was almost the size of a volleyball. The salmon was at least 16 square inches. The rice and orzo side (wow, I can't even begin to describe the tastebud wonderment) was the size of a softball. Lisa the server dropped by the right amount of times and made great suggestions. This is a chain place that I'll gladly go to. I've tried nearly everything on their menu. Everything is fantastic, but one dish stands out among the rest. Their prime rib is so tender, you can cut it with a fork. It's so juicy, you might need a bib. The chicken... Wow, perfectly seasoned and also juicy a flavorful. The smashed potatoes are a treat. They don't skimp on the serving size for them either. Last but not least, their "Not Your Ordinary Mac and Cheese" POW! The blend of a creamy texture, rich yet subtle taste, topped with bread crumbs is magnificent. ( be careful, it's hot) I've eaten prime rib all over the nation, this one easily ranks inside my top 3. Children's meal for chicken strips are over priced at 20.00 they were not cook evenly. The steak I order did not taste well at at all but it was cook just as I asked. Completely disappointed in the removal of the Tai Kai salad! Now, We'll have to go to Houstons for their Grilled Chicken Salad! The staff was great but there are many problems with the food: The tuna steak is three inches thick but full of so much fat it is inedible. The smashed potatoes have sugar or sweet cream in them- something is in there that adds sweetness and makes them disgusting! When it comes to smashed/mashed potatoes there is no reason to try and reinvent the wheel. All you need is potatoes, salt, pepper, and milk (you can even use plant-based milk), and if you really want to jazz it up- garlic! However, sweetness does not belong at all. The deviled eggs are great if you remove the candied bacon- no need to add sweetness once again. The egg yolk is light and fluffy and not very salty so un-candied bacon would work just fine. Also, when the menu reads "wild rice and orzo" and arrives as a cold dish full of vegetables and a weird dressing you immediately realize you have been totally misled. I have nothing against vegetables but calling it a salad would let the customer know that one it is a cold dish, and two it is going to be more than rice and orzo signaling me to stay away because I'm probably not going to like whatever it is tossed with. Rice and orzo do not need a dressing! I could have eaten fresh from a local top-tier chef for the same price with WAY BETTER QUALITY, FLAVOR, & EXECUTION! Whoever is at corporate putting together these recipes knows nothing about food, flavor, and execution. Also, the swordfish special had zero favor except for the grill, not being grilled, but literally the grill. It tasted like dirty grill ash! I was able to eat it by using the sauce that came with my wife's tuna and that sauce is actually the only item the food designer at corporate succeeded with. Take your $200 dollars and eat somewhere respectable! read more

Normally I will wait for at least at second visit before rating any restaurant. But it was such a pleasant experience, I had to at least give it four stars this time. I'm sure they will earn that fifth star. From start to finish, this was an experience I won't forget. The wait staff was incredible and attentive. My time there turned into watching how well-oiled and efficient the operation was. Someone dropped a french fry on the floor, and my sister, who had been there before, commented that it would not be on the floor for very long. Sure enough, less than five minutes later, someone had come by and cleaned it up. The food was excellent, and the environment, though crowded, was very pleasant. Overall the solid service was let down by inedible food. Started with the queso and chips which was good. Being my first (and last) time eating here I asked the server for their recommendation. They suggested the marinated steak, believe it's called Steak Maui. I ordered medium/medium rare. When it came out it was blue. Raw from edge to edge. The marinate was poor (my fault for listening to the server). I had two mouthfuls but realized that I couldn't even force it. After about 15 minutes the server asked how the meal was. Told her it was undercooked and raw. She offered to cook it but by then I had already eaten the sides. Told her that it wasn't very good anyway so no need to cook it properly.
