This restaurant is located in Somerset Mall. Husband and I have ate at this location and the Livonia location many times. Unfortunately, the quality of food at this location has seemed to go down as well as the service. We waited 30 minutes to be seated on a Saturday night. I ordered the filet and while that was good and cooked to my liking, the smashed potatoes were ice cold. Yuck! Luckily I asked for the béarnaise sauce on the side for the steak because it was so thick and full of garlic which would have been too much for the steak in my opinion. I would say I had a mild case of food poisoning after eating here as I was sweating and had a very upset stomach. Didn't eat anything else all day except here. Filet was $40+. Husband said his chicken fingers platter was just ok. He said the cole slaw was terrible way too much sauce and it was runny. Paid about $100 with tip and it wasn't worth it. So many options here- depends what you're in the mood for. The chicken tenders and fries are amazing (make sure to get the bbq sauce), the salmon is healthy and fresh, the pasta soup is great and every single salad is tasty. My favorite salad is the Alex's salad. They also have an amazing turkey burger. My favorite appetizers are the queso dip and grilled artichokes. They will make the artichokes with olive oil instead of butter- just ask. I don't think I've had anything bad on the menu. The best thing of all- the carrot cake!!! I wanted to have my birthday dinner here and I called to make reservations, the lady was nice enough on the phone...then she tells me they don't want reservations for more than 4 people, I had 7 people in my party. If you are planning a dinner for more than 6 people then you should probably think again... unless you don't mind sitting at separate tables. Reservations for parties over 6 were not allowed but our group insisted on staying. From what I seen, it looked like the biggest table they had was a booth that fit 5-6 people. The staff accommodated us with 2 booths that sat directly across from each other, and the waitress waiting our table was sweet. We started off with appetizers. We had the queso, and the weekly special salmon dip. The queso was a great start because it was big enough to be shared by 4 people. It was one of the best queso dips I've had! The salmon dip is more of an acquired taste. If you don't like smoky flavor then don't get it. For my entree, I had the Caesar salad for $10 and I added shrimp which was an additional $10 but they were very generous with their shrimp (about 12 pieces). The only thing I wish my Caesar salad had was shaved chunky Parmesan rather than the finely grated. I asked if they had some I can get on the side but I was told the kitchen didn't have any prepared.. I also ordered a side of mac n' cheese which I tried 2 years ago and I forgot I wasn't a fan of it. Stoppped in for dinner after a long day of shopping! We had the salmon dip for an appetizer...it was average. We had a few drinks and ordered dinner. Our waitress was less to be desired! We inquired about the menu items and she had NOTHING to offer or suggest. This was our first time here for dinner and had a few questions about the entrees. She was more concerned about grabbing plates and glasses off the table than accommodating our needs. She even grabbed a glass of wine which still had a few sips remaining without even asking to remove it. I was a bit taken back by her lack of etiquette. Overall great experience. First time trying artichokes and they were pretty good if you're an artichoke fan. I loved the Thai salad with tuna l. It was very filling. I have frequented J Alexanders for over 15 years and I absolutely love the quality of service and they have for the most part been consistent on all the menu items through the years. I have noticed that the rotisserie chicken which is one of my favorite dishes has been much smaller portion than it had been in years past. But it has the same flavor it's always had which is good and I absolutely love all of their sides very good quality. I missed the couscous that they used to have that used to be extremely good but they did away with that for some reason and they only offer the wild rice. But I definitely recommend this restaurant for fresh me quality food. read more

As many of the other reviews mention, this restaurant is not intended for groups larger than 4 without a wait. I believe there may be three, round tables that can seat 6-8. On a Saturday night, we had of group of 7. At least 50% of the group had to be there before you were even allowed to be placed on the list . When enough of our friends arrived, we were given a 70-80 minute wait. Hey, we're in the mall--let's shop a little!! So we killed plenty of time in do exactly that. When we arrived back, we were seated rather promptly. Our server was fantastic! She was attentive and helpful. The ordered the wonderful calamari and chips and queso dip as appetizers . The entrees spanned the crispy chicken tenders, half baked chicken, ribs, steak and salads to name a few. Everyone was satisfied. We split the rib dinner (for a small split plate charge). It was well worth it and plenty for each of us. Dinner ended late with only a few table remaining. It was a delightful experience. read more

This is about the Troy restaurant! The food was good the waitress was nice. But I bit into a small piece of glass in my chocolate cake. The manager's response was to say "I don't know where the glass came from it could have come from anywhere." Well My concern is that they don't know and acted as if I had put it there. So chances are they didn't take it seriously! Probably won't go back. I don't like being treated like I was trying to pull a stunt for a free desert. Give me a break I can afford a good meal out! Boyfriend took me here for dinner on a Monday. Was nice to not have to wait. I haven't been here in a long time. First off, we ordered the calamari. They were hot and crispy. Very good. Then ordered some cocktails. They have a separate little menus with $14 margaritas...they are double shot! I highly recommend. I tried the vintage and it was perfect. I had the seared tuna, boyfriend had the crab cakes. Both phenomenal. Omg those crab cakes were one of the best we tried. You get two large/hearty pieces, mashed potatoes and veggie. Not at all what I had expected a crispy chicken dinner to be! When I saw "crispy chicken dinner" "French fries" & "southern cole slaw", I was hoping for a very different thing then what I got! I wasn't smart enough to check pictures on Yelp! I was thinking pieces of fried chicken leg, thigh, breast & wing maybe - not chicken tenders with match stick fries & a bad version of Asian style slaw (where in the south do they put cilantro (or was it parsley) in the coleslaw?)! I went there with my colleagues from office. The ambience was pretty nice but I was disappointed when they arranged a table for us. We were seated on one round table which was meant to be for maybe 6 people but 8 of us were cramped over there and almost all of us ordered steak, it was so difficult to cut the steak without disturbing my colleague sitting beside. I ordered Filet Mignon with Béarnaise, which I have never tried before so it was completely new dish for me. The filet should have been medium rare as i ordered but it was more like rare, so be careful! I did not like the Bearnaise sauce at all, maybe it's nothing to do with this restaurant but i just didn't like the taste. Oh and the big potato was just big potato lol. Dinner for 3, one drink and two sodas. Food was good, service good. Restroom was a complete mess. Dirty floor, trash overflowing, no paper towels. Unflushed toilets. I complained to the manager who was too busy yucking it up with the wait staff. He said he would address it. 30 minutes later I returned to use the restroom again. Paper towels now present, stuff on the floor, wastebasket overflowing and toilet still unflushed. Sink a mess. Dinner for 3, $150 ( 1 beer ordered) including tip. The two stars are based off of my steak. The restaurant has a very nice vibe, the lights are dim and there is a candle at each table. We went later in the evening and it was not busy at all. We were seated immediately. Our server was very tentative, we never had to ask for a refill on our drinks. We ordered the calamari app which was very appetizing and came out quickly. Now my issue is with the steak, I ordered a filet cooked medium. I do understand that it is a very thick center cut of meat but when I tell you the outside was CHARBROILED, I am not exaggerating. The outside was literally black with very deep grill marks, partial parts of the steak were well done, med well, and even part of the inside was RARE. The filet was not tender and easy to cut at all, it was like sawing away at a piece of wood. If you're wondering why I didn't send it back immediately it's because I was out for my birthday dinner, I have been very sick lately and was feeling well enough to try and eat so I just sawed through it. I'm assuming the cook had a bad night or was inexperienced? But it was completely unacceptable for a $37 steak to be honest. I'll attach a photo so you can see for yourself read more

Let me start off by saying that I love J. Alexander's! The food is always delicious! But the service at this location is very inconsistent. Every time I dine at this location there is always a problem, including last night. We ordered our food - the redwood salad and a burger entree. About 10-15 minutes later my husband's burger comes out and the waiter asked if we are missing anything else. I said, "yes, my redwood salad." He said okay I'll go check on it and get it for you. He never came back. Another five minutes go by, and the waitress checks on our table. I tell her that my husband's food is getting cold (he was waiting to eat with me), and that my food never came. She quickly apologized (she was very sweet). About ten minutes later, the manager came out to apologize and brought my salad out and a new hot burger for my husband. It was a nice gesture, and they quickly took care of the problem. But I'm not quite sure why this location always has issues with their service. We were a walk-in party of 4 @ 5:30pm and they took our name down and said it would be 1hr, then it was 1hr 1/2 and now it's been two hours. So after patiently waiting we were told that we added to the waiting list not the reservation list. If anyone goes here I guess mk sure your on the reservation list and not the waiting list. I've been dining here since 2008; the service and food remain consistently good, and I am often greeted with a "Welcome back" from the staff that works hard to remember names, faces, and favorite cocktails. I would describe the menu as new American, offering sandwiches to ahi tuna and filet mignon. The portions are hearty, and I sometimes choose just an Alex's Salad, which is enough for a light bite. Overall, J. Alexander's is a great place to stop for a glass or wine and an appetizer while taking a break from holiday shopping, or as your destination restaurant for a dinner with friends. read more

I could not believe how terrible the service was on Sunday. We were seated, a male server took our order, he was polite and attentive. A female server came by and gave us our meals. We waited for someone to re approach us so we could order the carrot cake. But no one ever did. The female server than came and gave us the receipt. When we asked for the carrot cake she noted that it was packed up for the night. While we and other customers were in the dining area they proceeded to turn the lights on and off. Very rude. If you didn't want to wait on us, we should not have been seated. We were barely inside the restaurant for an hour. I have tried it rather have been wrangled to go to this place too many times. I ordered a Caesar salad and some shrimp to put on top. The Caesar was all well and good but after chewing on the first bite of shrimp my stomach didn't like it and my stomach turned sour and I started to get quesy and nauseous. I told the waitress when she came by that I thought maybe the shrimp wasn't fully cooked. She took it back to the chef and came bake out to see if I wanted anything else or if I wanted a new shrimp and I said no thank you. They took the shrimps off the bill but it's months and I can't eat or smell shrimp and not think of the last time I ate it at J Alexander's now. No more shrimp for me now. read more

Amazing food, excellent service. We got there shortly after opening and it was dead. Within the time we ate lunch, it was packed. We had the deviled egg appetizer. It had candied bacon on top and it was absolutely delicious. I just had a salad for lunch. It was pretty good, though I do wish they weren't so stingy with the croutons because they were so tasty. My mom had one of the sandwiches, it was ham and cheese with a beautiful fried egg on top. Not only was it a beautiful work of art, it was super good. Pretty decent portion size and it came with a small salad and fries. I had the carrot cake for dessert because I'm a total freak, but it had to be one of the best carrot cakes I have ever had in my life. They serve it warm and the butter cream frosting gets melts and wonderful. I'm salivating writing this review as I think about it. I sampled my mom's key lime pie which was equally tasty. My mom says "you know it's real key lime when it's not green!". It was indeed real and had a thick graham cracker crust. I can't wait to go back and reignite my love affair with J. I was ready to give J Alexander a 3-star review - the soup was OK ("Polish Gumbo") the fish tacos were 80% cabbage (although they did accommodate my request for grilled fish instead of fried)...and then I ordered chocolate cake. The cake was fine - a HUGE piece, actually - and the ice cream/hot fudge were actively good. When the server asked me how I was enjoying the cake, I said, "It's pretty good, but there's just a lot of it. I almost wish there were some nuts or something to break it up." I shouldn't have been surprised when I dish of pecans showed up at the table a moment later...but then she came back a minute or two after THAT with a small dish of peanuts too. Anyways, I ordered Mac n cheese for the girls, they loved it. Macaroni shells baked with white cheese and basil I think...it was very delicious. I had the grilled chicken salad as to attempt to stay away from carbs. I've never had a chicken salad where it was slices of chicken instead of chicken pieces that had to be cut up. I very much enjoyed this, was much easier to eat and very tasty. I should've ordered extra feta, I love feta cheese. So the attempt to stay away from sugar and carbs failed when we got offered dessert and carrot cake was on the menu. The girls said "carrot cake for dessert? Who wants vegetables as dessert?" Well the food here is so good! I loved everything including how the fries were so thin and the burgers tasted great! When ever we needed help they'd come in a flash. This restaurant gets a 5 star rating for me because of the food mainly. Everything was good the chicken tenders, steak burger and the old fashioned cheese burger was great.
