We decided to get a snack here while waiting for our table at din Tai fung. Both are located in the Irvine spectrum center. I'm from Sacramento so the Irvine spectrum center is comparable to the fountains at Roseville or the Palladio in Folsom in the sac area. We ordered popcorn chicken, french fries and drinks (mainly for the kids) and to get a snack since we were hungry. Inside has a few tables, which there were one or two other customers inside dining. Inside the space was pretty messy. It looks like the workers did not have time to clean since there were crumbs and bits of trash. I'm glad we didn't dine in. For the food, since it's made to order, we waited just over 15 minutes for the fried foods. It came out piping hot, which we didn't really get to enjoy since by then, our table at din Tai Fung was ready. So we brought it with us. The chicken was really good. It was seasoned well and they even gave us a seasoning packet to add more flavor to the popcorn chicken. I'll go back if I'm in this area and want boba and popcorn chicken. read more

I don't leave 1-star reviews very often, but I just could not think of a reason to even give it 2 stars. First, the ordering on their kiosks seems a little overly complicated. Although I appreciate all the questions, they got annoying after a while, especially when they gave several options for how much ice you wanted in the drink. They also have Pepsi, which I don't care for, but worse, they only had Pepsi Zero, which, frankly, is just gross tasting. So settled for root beer. When we finished ordering, the total for 2 people was $35! That was for one combo, an entree, and another drink. Then we sat and waited. And waited. In fact, we waited long enough to try a different table, as the first one was by the door and it was hot outside. So we tried a booth, and immediately plopped down on a bench that was way too low for the table. Back to the old table. While we were waiting, we weren't a fan of the music. I used Shazam and figured out it was a female K-pop group. I'm sure kids love it, but it's not my taste. Looking around, the place needs a remodel and a paint job. Chips are all over the walls and corners. It looked like someone tried to paint the walls, but the color didn't quite match. The drain for the soda machine needs a very deep cleaning. They do have a status screen that tells you when your order is ready, which is nice. Then the food. I ordered the 2-piece chicken combo. It didn't look anything like the pictures. The roll is a hamburger bun! I tried the chicken, and well, blech. I thought I would attempt to make a sandwich, but that was worse. Although the chicken was moist, the breading had more texture than taste, and the texture just wasn't good. The curly fries (à la Arby's style) were limp and not crunchy at all. The root beer was good, as I like the Stubborn brand, but the lid was so weird to drink from; it was hard not to spill on my shirt. J&G Fried Chicken is one of the better Taiwanese fried chicken spots in Irvine. The popcorn chicken was super crispy on the outside while still juicy inside, and the seasoning had that perfect savory Taiwanese flavor. The oyster mushrooms were also surprisingly good -- crispy, light, and addictive. The staff was friendly, service was quick, and the outdoor seating made it a nice casual place to hang out. It was not appealing at all. I ordered the green tea lemonade and it took an absurdly long time. I didn't add boba or anything. I wasn't sure if maybe the lemon was fresh squeezed or something? That's the only thing that would explain it, but when I tried the drink it barely tasted like lemon at all. I actually ended up only drinking a little and then throwing it out. After all that time making the drink, they couldn't even sift out the lemon seeds (weird). The green tea wasn't even very good. We did a pick up order from the Irvine Spectrum last night and I would say it was ok. You place your order through a kiosk and associate a buzzer with your order when you pay. We ordered the popcorn chicken combo with curly fries and the agave vanilla soda, fish cake fries, and the purple yam balls. We got our order in about 15 ish minutes and when I was handed our order, I had to remind the guy that our order is suppose to come with a drink. Other than that, no real hiccups with service, but seeing it's a self ordering pick up establishment, there shouldn't be any hiccups. I was expecting string spices from Taiwanese style popcorn chicken, but it was on the light side. The curly fries is similar to what you would get at Jack in the box. My girlfriend enjoyed the fish cake fries which had an interesting texture: almost like mochi in my opinion. The purple yam balls were ok. The agave vanilla cream soda is a little different but if you enjoy cream soda, that might be a flavor you would enjoy. Overall, J&G is decent but nothing really stood out. read more

Unfortunately our first experience with J&G was not the greatest. We went to order and then we sat down for about ten minutes. During this time, I asked my boyfriend if I could run and pick up a drink from the shop two stores down. By the time I walked to that shop, waited on line to order, placed my order, waited for my pick up and walked back (another 10ish minutes) my boyfriend was STILL waiting. Then when I sat down, we waited yet another five-ish minutes and finally the food was ready. At that point, we were incredibly hungry and still thought the food was not up to par, especially with the wait time. The chicken was dry and I could see the meat was thin on the bone. I say the one item I've only tried is 5/5. The reason why it's good is because it comes out piping hot and the batter with spices is very tasty and flavorful. Their popcorn chicken doesn't have the typical Taiwanese popcorn chicken breading or seasoning that I'm used to which is disappointing, but the curly fries that came with the combo were good. The portion size of the combo felt small for the price. And if you want more than one sauce, you have to pay extra. The spicy chicken fillet seems like the more popular choice. It was fun to eat because it's a big, thin fillet the size of my hand. The breading on it is better than the popcorn chicken. The chicken is flavorful but beware it's very spicy.
