I came here during lunch yesterday because my nails were in desperate need of being redone. From the start I was a little wary. Rather than filing the top coat off, applying acetone swabs and wrapping my gel nails in foil and letting them soak they had me put my fingers directly in acetone. For one, this is horrible as it Will immensely dried out both my hands and nails. When it was finally my time to sit in a chair the tech had a terrible time getting the polish off because soaking nails directly in acetone doesn't do anything. She continued to have me soak them as she scraped them one by one. This still wasn't working so I started peeling it off myself. The eat of the experience was relatively quick and painless. I paid my $35 and went back to work. Then when I was home they chipped. Gel nails ARE NOT supposed to chip. Needless to say, I won't be coming back here. read more

When I went last week, however, to get a gel manicure/gel pedicure (exactly zero extras), the total was EIGHTY-TWO DOLLARS. I *used* to go to J&J Nails because their competition in the neighborhood is Flora Nails, and they're too expensive and a little bougie. I went out of my way to go to J&J last week because I didn't want to pay the $70 for the gel mani/pedi at Flora. Imagine my horror at being told I owe EIGHTY-TWO DOLLARS for a mani/pedi. Get. Out. I was in town for only one week and desperately needed and manicure and pedicure. I found this place through Yelp. Based on the reviews, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Mon-Wed, you can receive BOTH for $22!!! SCORE! I also read in reviews that the wait can be very long on those days. I got very lucky and was seated in a pedicure chair immediately. My technician was friendly and very thorough. I then moved to a manicure chair with the same technician. She did an amazing job on my fingernails as well. The conversation was pleasant and she was very polite. Upon moving to the "drying station" my technician ended my services with a fabulous neck and shoulder massage! Came here for a quick mani during lunch. Got here around 12:10 PM and all technicians were already busy. Luckily, I didn't have to wait for more than 5 mins as someone finished up soon after. I was really impressed when I first heard my friend tell me there was a $20 mani & pedi deal. Everytime I went for just a pedicure, it ended up costing more than that in CA. So, I came over here as a walk-in, got seated right away, and it was all done pretty quickly. No magazines, no chitter chatter, just an average space where I didn't feel too pampered. Nothing stuck out here. I would say I'd go back, but I know better now. I'm seeing $20 deals like this everywhere, and it's not just limited to Mon-Wed. Twenty dollars is all you'll pay for a manicure and pedicure and at that price it is worth it. And if you're anything like me, you ruin them in less than a week anyways so don't really deserve to spend more. I walked in and out of here in less than an hour and so far have no chipped nails (minus the two I smudged before leaving the salon but they reluctantly fixed those for me before I waked out). The manicurist was not too talkative but I didn't blame her. She worked quickly and efficiently to get the job done which was just what I needed. This isn't a spa you want to retreat to to relax after a hard day's work. It doesn't smell particularly great, they use paper towels during the pedicure instead of real ones, and they don't go out of their way to provide a comfortable setting. But like I said, if you're like me and just need to get some of the city grime off the soles of your feet and your cuticles trimmed down, J&J can do just that. read more

Ok. Lemme start by informing the reader of this review that I actually got the idea of going to this spot by reading the previous reviews. I have to say that i am IN LOVE with this place. I'm a Black, 19 year old working professional who loves to groom himself (Yes, I am gay). The ladies that work there are so professional and you can really tell that they love what they do. They don't idle around or carry on conversations in different languages. Super professional. The Monday-Wednesday $20 special of a manicure/pedicure is a godsend, espically during these rough times. The girls are efficent and don't do a rushed job. The store itself is immaculate. Located on a second floor walkup, the smallness of the room and the intimate lighting make you feel as if you aren't in New York. The place is CLEAN. the do a quick scrub up of all the pedicure thrones that have been used and for the ladies, They have an array of summer colors (more bright and exciting colors) and the oranges have to be the best of any in the Tri-State area. And while your nails dry, you can watch a recent blockbuster flick in subtitles and listen to soft jazz. It really is a treat. My only concern is that if you work in chemicals like bleach or any cleaning solution, your going to be going for touch ups about 2 or 3x a month! Don't get me wrong, they do put a double coat of clear polish on but abrasive chemicals eat it away like nothing. And yes, they do expect a tip (I usually tip about $10, but they deserve it!!). I found this place on yelp as I was in dire need of a mani/pedi. I was living in LA where nail salons are on every corner and it is common practice to get a spa mani/pedi for $20. I was confused why every nail salon I walked by in NYC had pedicures starting at $30+ so yelped and found J&J. They have a great $20 special Mon-wed and they did a great job. I like to get in and out when I'm getting my nails did. I don't expect it to be some extravagant spa experience so my expectations may be different from yours. Its very clean, professional, and quality work. The Ugly: -when i went in for a manicure and pedicure, one woman did both services and took forever. the other 4 people working were too busy watching tv and gossiping. -they are horribly rude. (more often on the phone than in person) Go spend $5 more and get a relaxed experience where your business is genuinely appreciated. I got a manicure here during my lunch hour on Friday. And four days later, the manicure is still going strong. The place is clean, the technicians efficient, and the price is right at $8 for a mani and on Mon-Wed a mani and pedi is only $20. They have a pretty sizeable collection of OPI and Essie and they do a pretty good job of filing and painting. I have no complaints here, J&J seems like a pretty solid place to go for a manicure if you're in a rush because they work super fast. I would come here again if I were in the area, but I would be open to trying other places too. This salon is right by my office and I love the service I get there. I use one girl and she does a killer French manicure and a gel manicure that can last me up to 3 weeks. I would give HER 5 stars if I could. She takes her time and takes great care of my nails. Reasons I gave the salon 4 stars: 1- They don't take appointments, it's a walk in only policy, which is kind of a drag. 2- While I love the quality of the gel manicure I get, they have a very limited selection of colors. Like, very limited. Get it together guys! 3- They have this big screen TV, which is fine, but it's muted and there is this really corny music playing instead. Make a decision people. Music or TV. Jeez. 4- Hate to harp on the TV, but they've also been playing one of the Mission Impossible movies on it for like a year - muted of course. Can we please get a new movie? 5- It also annoys me that Monday-Wednesday, they offer a discounted mani/pedi deal, but since I get a gel manicure, they won't discount my pedi. I will be replacing these folks with my place in Brooklyn. They are that good minus the drama. The Mon-Wed mani/pedi option if simply fabulous. I've tried my second person so far and she's terrific. The place is clean, relaxing and spa-like in atmosphere. They have a great selection of polishes and i was impressed (I carry my own however). I like this place. My first time here. It's very clean, and my pedi was quick. I got there at 11 and was out at 11:30ish. I have to admit i was a little worried when i read in a review that a tech didn't use sanitized tools, but i seen the tools that my tech used came from that oven looking device that sanitizes the tools so i was relieved. In general though, I have no problem asking a tech to sanitize the tools used on me when i visit a nail salon ;) I got a basic pedicure and it cost $18. I went here not expecting much and I was so pleasantly surprised. I had a manicure on Saturday and it still looks great today! They have a great selection of the usual Essie/OPI products, and possibly the largest collection of orange shades according to a friend of mine. I'm so used to having mediocre manicures in this part of town for way too much money. This place is decently priced ($8 for a mani), very clean, and the staff are super nice (even if they can't quite understand English all that well). Actually a solid inexpensive nail spot smack dab in the middle of corporate-heavy Midtown East. Be aware that the M-W $20 mani-pedi special attracts hordes and you may end up waiting a while, with all chairs constantly in use! They are average clean (they have a sterilizer, but I'm not sure if the set of tools used on your came straight from it; they do a quick scrub down with some cleaning agents between each tub drain), have your typical Essie/OPI picks (and an AWESOME array of oranges - a favorite of mine in the summers). I wish I could get in with this guy who seems to do a thorough scrubbing job on the pedis - but have never been so lucky. I believe you can book appointments in advance and forego that long-ass line (as I've seen other savvy women do). And yes, results last a decent amount of time. This place is quick and pretty cheap, as mentioned. It wasn't super crowded when we went, a weekday afternoon. But, I went with a friend, and while they seemed to do a pretty good job on her, I was not as lucky. I had to ask her to fix multiple nails, and they still didn't come out very well. Maybe it's hit or miss. Also, the two technicians were yapping in korean to each other while working. Now, my gf and I are both asian, how were they so sure we wouldn't understand any of it? Because my friend did understand some of it, and they did talk about us, and my tech did mention how my nails were 'bad'. A lady with red hair was initially going to do my manicure and pedicure, but after I asked her to please dry my WET seat, she proceeded to insult me in Spanish. I'm an Afro Latina and she had no idea I spoke Spanish. When I confronted her in Spanish she asked to "sit down if I would." Then I asked for someone else to do my mani and pedi, she was rude enough to come over and be disgusting in Spanish again. Intolerable behavior. Not worth it. I do not think she rushed through the pedicure or the manicure, and both came out good. I have seen more attention to detail at other salons, but for $20 doll-hairs what do you want? Go here for a basic, get the job done experience... not a relaxing spa experience. I will say there were times I was a little skeeved when it came to sanitation. While my nails were drying, a woman literally came over and took the toe seperators from my feet and walked directly over to a pedicure chair and placed them between another girls toes. EW! Good thing I was on my way out the door... otherwise I probably would have been thinking about cleanliness the whole time and ruined my time in the chair. This salon is by my office. The Monday-Wednesday $20 mani-pedi special is great but the wait can get long. Some staff are pleasant while others are curt. The basic mani-pedi is rushed during lunchtime. While the ambiance is nice, a rush job is still a rush job. In particular, I'm hard on my feet and always need a good buffing and I never get that here. I go home after and buff my feet to get them right. Also, I agree with another reviewer here about the sterilization practices not being evident during the course of the day. I have never see them pulling the tools out from sterile places. read more
