Nothing amazing or creative, but all very good nevertheless. I enjoyed the lox scramble on special. Friendly service. Minor turnoffs: Toast luke warm, butter in packets, boring hot sauce choices. A cafe in the best sense; a simple room in an old brick building with tall exposed wood ceilings held up by chunky beams, framed by brick walls, big old windows and a smattering of basic wood tables on the floor. Feels a bit like a slice of old Portland. On a blustery late morning, the breakfast quesadilla caught my eye and I have no regrets; fluffy eggs folded into a tortilla and topped with cheese and avocado. Warm, filling and delish (those Jalapeños, tho, beware). The coffee is self serve, but there are good beans on offer, not the usual diner swill. I was in town visiting and my boy said this place down the street was fire.. he wasn't lying! I was low key against that giner butter...then i had it and there wasn't enough!! Pure genius. Had a lovely breakfast here. Serve yourself coffee (pretty good!) and water, they also offer speciality coffee drinks and cocktails. I just recently dropped in for breakfast after a long while. It's amazing how little J&M has changed. And that's a good thing. When I first moved to Portland in 2000 I lived just a few blocks away. Consequently I had lots and lots of breakfasts here. Here's what's great about J&M: -It's not super pretentious, which, for a breakfast joint in Portland, Oregon, is saying something. Weekend brunch is high religion in this town. This place is casual and not trying to wow the pants off of you. -They have self-serve coffee, with mugs and carafes out in the open. This is great. When you arrrive, if there is a line, you can leave your name on the list and then go grab yourself a coffee before you've even been seated or waited on. This is brilliant. -The food is all decent. I wish I could give this restaurant a 4.5 stars. It's small and extremely homey and welcoming. The food is amazing, and I like that you can walk in and get your own coffee. The coffee was extremely good, by the way. My Daughter and I both had waffles, and I added the ginger butter to mine. I'm so glad I did! Since this place seems to focus on pork products, I will mention that the bacon was delicious and some of the thickest I have ever had. It's right and a side street, so parking is a bit much, like everywhere in that area, but definitely worth it. And the server was extremely nice and kind! read more

While I was in Portland recently I met up with a couple of friends for breakfast at this quaint cafe in a really cool old building. The building was incredible! I don't know what it used to be, but why the exposed brick walls and ginormous paned windows I felt like I was dining back in time. For food, I opted for their breakfast burrito with added avocado. My friends got the French toast and the waffle. While everything was tasty, I gotta say the star of the show were the crispy homestyle potatoes that accompanied my burrito. Their prices were a little steep here, though that seems to be par for the course these days. Service was friendly and fast, too. And of course, they had great coffee! read more

No wait on a Saturday at 12:30pm. We easily found street parking. The tofu scramble and breakfast sandwich come with perfectly crispy potatoes. I asked for no bacon with my sandwich which was subbed for avocado. The crispy grits were delicious. Service was friendly. The prices were reasonable. Ordered the Biscuits & Gravy bc that's what I craved. The over easy egg added to the "gooey goodness" when combined with the taters! Overall flavor of B + G was flat, biscuits were flaky enough, decent meat to lava ratio, but kinda sad it wasn't mouth watering. . . The Host and Server were kind, had her eye on my care, kinda nice getting my own coffee in my favorite mug. . . and I realized this breakfast tradition will come again, definitely do the Chorizo Scramble next time. read more

The longer I spent in the cafe the more I liked it. There's lots of natural light and sunshine in here. Very welcoming feeling and our server (with the awesome bat tattoo) was kind, cool and friendly. You serve yourself coffee and get to select a mug off the mug-tree. There is mugs for every personality. Little kittens on one, a mountain range, a goat, the Alliance Starbird (shoutout to my fellow Star Wars nerds, hehe). I got a little pitcher of their house-made Bailey's for my coffee. Haven't seen this on menus before! It's thick like whipping cream and smells divine. If there were a Portland version of like, Seinfeld, I could see them eating in here. Speaking of Seinfeld, I'm a bit of a soup nazi myself. Once I discovered they had a soup de jour, I knew that's what I was having. It was chicken tortilla, and it was excellent. The bread that's given with the soup was too hard, and I think this should've come with tortilla chips or oyster crackers. However, I admired the use of hominy, thought the chicken was delicious and tender, and I liked the addition of salsa verde + sour cream on top as a garnish. It was just the exactly-right thickness chicken tortilla soup should be too. I stole half the red salsa off my guy's burrito because it was so fresh and homemade tasting! It had the crunch of jalapeño and onion, lime, salt, maybe cilantro too. So good. I want to buy this salsa in bulk. Will be back for sure. Cool cafe on the east side of the river with ample seating including outdoor. Good service even though just one person was doing everything FOH. My veggie scramble was impressively delicious. Very cute and quaint cafe just outside the hustle and bustle of downtown. The biscuits and gravy were some of the best I've had in the PNW, and that's saying something coming from a southerner! The bacon was thick and a little sweet, a lot salty, but very rich in flavor. The tortilla soup was more on the verde chili side than the red tomato/brothy side, but still very thick and flavorful. The potatoes were rustic and the perfect compliment to the main dishes. The service was quick, polite, and overall perfect for a midweek brunch. This is a true gem found quite by accident. My wife and I were spending a few days in town visiting friends and family and asked around where the locals go for breakfast. To me that's the ultimate test of an eatery. The J and M Cafe was suggested so we got there at opening and were not disappointed. Grab a mug as you walk in and help yourself to coffee. Now, as the caffeine takes affect, you can pursue menu and expect a wonderful meal with fresh fruit if you choose. All dishes made fresh and to your individual taste. The service is leisurely but competent so don't be in a rush. By the time we left, around 9:30am, the place was really busy! Another good sign. Enjoy the architecture of the building, post and beam construction. The server told us it was the Post Office in the late 1800s, then a factory before it became a restaurant in 1992. We're from Los Angeles, CA and visiting Portland for the weekend. We came in on Sunday, 8/13/23 around noon and although the host at the door was very kind and welcoming, the waitress was the complete opposite! It was insanely obvious how she walked around pretending we didn't exist and ignoring us. We watched her take everyone else's order before us (guests that were seated after us). I eventually stood up and asked for our order to be taken. We were told they would (not by the waitress) but no one ever came to our table so we decided to leave. That waitress was horrendous and should be fired. I felt bad for my brother who was very excited to try their food; as this restaurant was his choice after finding it online.
