This place is incredible! Fabulous food with unique combinations of flavors and choice. They only time I was let down was when I showed up for breakfast and they were CLOSED ON WEDNESDAYS! My 97 year old mother and I went the other day and she had the vegetable hash and I had the chicken salad. Both were unique, tasty and especially loved the blood oranges on my salad. Of course we also had to share an appetizer order of Hush Puppies, blow your mind fabulous including the thousand island dressing with pickles to dip each round morsel. Four stars vs five for reasons you'll probably figure out if you read this whole review. We tried crab cake Benedict, Louisiana Hash, and Steak & Eggs. The restaurant was full of happy eaters both inside and out, and had a cheery family breakfast vibe. Upon arrival we were greeted by a friendly waitress, the only one on duty, though she had a few bus boys helping. She asked us to wait for a table which we did but then there was miscommunication about sitting down when bus boy said it was ok. We arrived about 12:10, by the time we ordered and received food it was 12:50, so a bit of a wait. But the food is good. I got the special crab cake Benedict atop layers of sweet potato and arugula with hollandaise sauce topping it all. I ordered extra hollandaise as i know i needed that, and i did, not quite enough as is, they do the real deal hollandaise, very good, and very nice that they allowed me a half order as i could barely finish as is, stuffed before finishing. But i could have done without sweet potatoes combined with seafood. I think a savory potato medley or mash would have gone better or even the classic English muffin. It was not bad, just not the perfect mix of flavor for my taste. My son got the Louisiana hash which was really nice. It was a spicy tasty stir fry of peppers, onions Andouille sausage, with the bacon as two nice full pieces on the side and eggs on top. He was stuffed with some left overs too. My husband got the steak and eggs special that was excellent topped with a homemade chimchurri sauce and home fries instead of hashbrowns. We got a side of gravy to go with whatever, which was also yummy especially on the steak and Louisiana hash. We asked for our check and it took about 10 min to get it. The steak was $30, which was not shown on any menu, but probably normal. It was good. They let you take a cup of coffee to go in End which is also good, and i forgot to ask what brand coffee they used but it has excellent flavor! Bottom line is i think they could use a few more order takers and check givers, and maybe don't have a schedule in your day to attend to right after eating... otherwise it's a nice choice! My 2nd time coming here. First time was with my coworkers celebrating a bdays. I've never been here before and it's such a quaint little spot. Looks like lots of locals come here. I took my hubby here to taste their food because I really enjoyed what I had when I came here with coworkers. I ordered the same thing the smoked salmon hash with dill crema. It was delicious as I remembered. Hubby tried their seasonal crab cake benedict. He didn't enjoy it too much. Didn't taste any crab at all. It had arugula and some Japanese sweet potato. We'll be back again and hubby will try something else. We were surprised that the owner came by to our table and said hello to my husband. I think he was also in the military so that was very nice I thought to say hello. This place is a little hidden gem. We're breakfast snobs & this place impressed us. Walking through the door we saw the inside was packed on a weekday morning but we were greeted immediately and told we could sit wherever we'd like. We opted to sit on the patio outside since it was a beautiful day. I knew I'd like it when I saw the mismatched coffee cups. The food was good - nothing spectacular but the service was top tier. -We started with the $6 Donut Bites, it came with 5 bites & strawberry jam. Our server Stephanie was so nice & let us know that the bites come out very hot & fresh so let them steam out before you bite into one. They were a yummy & cheap starter that we enjoyed. - I'm a midwesterner so the biscuit & gravy looked a little different than what I'm used to but it was still good. The hash-browns were a little dense in the middle as if they didn't dry/drain the potatoes but who am I to know how they make them here. They were good & crispy on top so that's all that matters to me. - The "2 eggs & You're Outta Here" was a classic yummy American breakfast. What else is there to say. 2 eggs & get out. Overall I'm glad we stopped by and gave it a try. Today after an appointment, decided to give it a try for breakfast. Turns out I really regret passing it by for so long! There is parking behind it and along Talbot street. Easy entrance if a walker or wheelchair is in use. The inside is bright, cheery, with artwork on the walls that can be purchased. Lots of windows, and also outdoor seating available bordering the parking area. Quiet music, actually able to hold a conversation! Maria, one half of the team who owns the cafe (with husband Joel, who was also serving tables) was our server. I ordered the "Two Eggs and Your'e Outta Here" for $13.00, which included hash browns and choice of toast. Added $2.50 for bacon, (or could add sausage, ham, chorizo or vegetarian sausage). My friend ordered the Arcada omelette, which featured 5 different kinds of fresh mushrooms, cheese, onions, spinach for $20, came with toast and choice of hashbrowns, fruit, fries, or side salad. We ordered coffee, which was Bella Rosa, and delicious. The food was absolutely perfect and delicious. My eggs were cooked perfectly. Toast toasted perfectly. Hashbrowns actually crisp and delicious (not usually a fan - most of the time they arrive greasy and limp and soggy), Not these. Got 3 slices of bacon which were crisp and cooked perfectly. My friend's Arcada omelette was superb. A perfect balance of cheese/onions, spinach and a multitude of mushroom. More perfectly prepared hashbrowns. All items were fresh, and most locally sourced. (Yup, a lot of "perfect", and deservedly so). Service was prompt, and Maria was so delightful and obviously proud of her cafe - and she has every right to be. Basic diner with the usual breakfast menu and a few more unusual (to me anyway) offerings. We had to wait a little bit to be seated, not unusual for a Sunday morning. Once we were seated we were immediately offered coffee, nice start. When the check came the server said "I assume everything was great!" Not "How was your meal?". It felt like a way of telling the customer "we don't want to hear it". So I will share here. I had the biscuit and gravy. The eggs and hash browns were cooked as I had requested, no complaint. But the biscuit was just a softball sized lump of cooked dough covered in COLD gravy. As if the gravy had been poured out and sat there as the rest of the dish was cooked. This restaurant used to be Dierks MidTown Cafe. The breakfast is as good as before, with some positive changes. Now it is J&M's Midtown Café. We've been here a few times since the change, and they're doing a good job keeping it very close to the original menu and recipes. As far as my husband and I can tell, everything seems to have carried over deliciously to the new owners quite well. They have the bomb corn beef hash. I get an over-easy egg on it, as well as some green onion sprinkled over the top, which, as far as I'm concerned, puts it way over the top as a very hard-to-beat breakfast. They also have these little buttermilk donuts served with powdered sugar and seasonal jam. So yummy. I also tried the Hush Puppies deep-fried cornmeal batter; my hubby says they were delicious. He's from New Orleans and says he ought to know, lol. My hubby always gets pancakes, eggs, and bacon. My man loves pancakes, and he loves their pancakes! They also have mimosas, which is an extra win-win for me! The ambiance is like a very cozy and quaint small diner; we have always enjoyed our breakfasts here. The service has been excellent, and we rarely have to wait long to get a table, even if there is a line. We stopped by on a Tuesday around 12pm. There restaurant itself is not very big and has maybe 12 tables. To my surprise most of them were taken. We were greeted by one of the employees and we just awkwardly stood there for a little, confused if it was self seating or if we had to wait for the server so we sat down at the closest table. The server immediately came over and told us that we would be sitting at the table in the corner so we moved over there. As soon as we sat at the other table I noticed she sat other patrons at that table, we could have just stayed at the original table. One of the employees gave us menus and offered us drinks. But to my surprise no where on the menu is there a list of non alcoholic drink options. So I just ordered a coffee and my bf received a can of Diet Pepsi (no free refills). The coffee was tasty and was strong, which I enjoyed. But I never got offered a refill. After we received our drinks we waited for the server to take our order. It seems like there is only one server working the floor so it did take a minute to order while the other employees help with drinks . I decided to go with the Country Benedict with mushrooms on the side and my bf went with the French toast , sourdough on the side and bacon. Our food did not take long to arrive, but when it did I noticed that the French toast was burnt. We are not people to send food back so we ate the food plus it was obviously burnt. It is on the cook/server to notice things like this. My bf ate it anyways and said it was okay. He also mentioned the bacon having an off taste. My Country Benedict was decent, I'm glad I got the mushrooms on the side. I will say that it was a little bit saltier than I would have liked. The oven roasted tomato that comes with the Benedict is a nice addition to the dish that gives it a nice balance. Unlike a classic Benedict this came with a warm crispy baguette and chopped bacon. The portion of hashbrowns was pretty big, but they were just okay. Although the dish was decent, I will probably not be back. We chose to go here because this is one of the few breakfast places that had more choices for pescatarians. Came in on a rainy Saturday and they were packed because of the lack of outdoor seating. Nevertheless they were able to accommodate our party of 6 in 10-15 minutes. The service here is great and you just feel taken care of! We first got the donut bites (4/5) which was good. You get jam on the side, but I really liked it with some syrup. The French toast (2.5/5) was really eggy in the middle for some reason. Maybe it was soaked in the egg for too long? The flavor was good, but the texture was what bothered me. My boyfriend got the corned beef hash (4/5) and that was really good! He put a generous amount of ketchup and I think that made it even better. Overall a nice breakfast place with great service. I personally like sweets for breakfast, so if I was craving a French toast, I wouldn't go here. That's the main reason for the 3 stars. Stopped by today for the first time and we really enjoyed the experience. Spouse got the Smoked Salmon Latkes Benedict and stated the eggs were poached perfectly and the Benedict had great flavor. I got the Steak & Eggs, ordered rare. My spouse gave me the "oh, ok..." look since the last few times we have gone out and I order rare steaks I got the "blue rare" version which isn't what was requested. Steak came out as the perfect red rare that I wanted. I also enjoyed the country potatoes served with my dish which included fresh red and green peppers. Coffee was excellent, service was quick and friendly. Restaurant was busy but we never felt rushed. This breakfast experience cost us about 15% more than what we normally pay but was well worth it. This was the first time I went to this restaurant. I had looked at the menu and saw that it had kept some of the items from the former owner and added some new things. I asked if half orders were allowed and the answer was yes, which I really appreciate. I love when restaurants have specialty non-alcoholic drink choices and this restaurant has "shrubs ". Three different flavors were available and I tried the pineapple chili. It was honestly perfect, served in a nice glass with a nice straw not too sweet very very fresh. Just delicious. The half order of country Benedict was perfect. The bacon was crispy and well done. Everything was hot. I got my little serving of vegetables and my hollandaise fix! A few weeks ago I and a friend arranged to meet at the Midtown Cafe. We chose this place because they supposedly open at 7am and my friend had to work at 9am. I got there first at 7:30 and the sign said closed but there were 2 patrons eating and a man behind the counter working. He looked at me and ignored me. I thought that maybe I needed to go to the front door but, it too was locked and the man inside glared at me and continued to ignore me. I went online to double check the hours and, sure enough, they were supposed to open at 7am so I called. I watched the man inside answer the phone. I told him I was standing outside hoping to get breakfast and he yelled at me, asking,"can't you read the sign? We're not open! There's no staff! Then he hung up. really??? Wow, I was a bit stunned at how he turned it around to somehow be my fault! I'm pretty sure he was either the manager or owner. I contacted my friend and we changed gears and met elsewhere. I kept thinking, why would an entire staff not show up for work, my answer is, he likely treats his staff as rudely or worse than he'd treated me!!! My advice? Stay away from this jerk and his business!!! My advice to him? Show some human decency and work on your power trip. Neither you nor your business are that good!!! read more

I'm not big on writing reviews unless they're positive, but I couldn't let this one slide. As someone who has worked in the restaurant industry for over 10 years, I understand the hustle and usually have a lot of patience--but what I don't have tolerance for is attitude and a lack of basic common sense when it comes to doing your job. My party of three arrived when there were no other names on the waitlist. We were greeted by the hostess and told we'd be seated shortly. They even brought out a heater to keep us warm, which was a nice touch. We were told our table was "next." Soon after, more groups started arriving and the list grew. We even commented, "Good thing we got here when we did--now there are five groups behind us." But then a group of four who arrived after us got seated. Then a two-top. We let it slide, assuming maybe it was about table sizes. But then it happened again. The hostess came out, didn't look at the list or acknowledge us, and called over a six-top who had arrived long after we did. At this point, we were getting frustrated. We had now waited 25 minutes while multiple tables who arrived later were seated ahead of us. To top it off, a three-top came up after all of this, put their name down, and they were seated before us too--despite being seventh on the list at that point. I went inside to ask what was going on, and the hostess just looked at me and said, "We'll seat you next." Then a server jumped in to say it was the hostess's first day and asked us to be patient. I'm sorry, but first day or not, seating guests in the order they arrive is common sense. What made it worse is how many times the hostess came outside, looked right at us, and then seated someone else. When she finally came to seat us, she did so with an attitude. Honestly, if she had just acknowledged the mistake and apologized, we would've happily sat down and eaten. But giving us attitude for your mistake? No thank you. Midtown used to be one of our favorite spots. My family and I would come almost every other Sunday. We really tried multiple times to give you guys the benefit of the doubt. Not sure what happened when they went from Dierk's to J&M but ever since the change, we've noticed a shift. The service has declined, the food quality isn't the same, and this attitude problem seems to be the norm now. We do our best to support local, but when local businesses start treating loyal customers like this, it's just not worth it. There are plenty of other spots in Santa Rosa with better service, friendlier staff, and way better food. We tried to support you guys, but we'll be spending our money elsewhere. read more
