Lotus and pork spare ribs soup

The Peking is not up to standard. There are much better one the Bay Area. The yellow croaker fish is misleading. Not the right type of fish, it is the cheaper Tilapia. The pineapple fried rice is pretty good. Not too salty. The lotus spare ribs soup was a bit salty, but my friends like it.

Came in as a party of 3 and ordered the following for dinner (listed in order of when it was served to our table): - Morel Black Chicken Soup: This was solid. We split one cup between three of us and it filled three of the small soup bowls. - Dry Pot Cauliflower: This was also pretty good, albeit some may find it a little too spicy if you're bad with spice. Lots of oil at the bottom too though. - Sizzling Black Pepper beef Steak Cube: Extremely overcooked. Not sure if it was the cut they used, the chef just plain overcooking it, or them leaving it out for too long since it comes on a sizzling iron plate., but this was probably the toughest steak cubes (牛柳) I've ever had. Flavors were okay though. - Cashew Nut Pineapple Shrimp Fried Rice: Best dish out of the 5 things we ordered in my opinion. Fragrant, but not overpowering and plenty of wok flavor. Cashews seem like they were added after the fact though rather than being stir fried. - Dry Braised Yellow Croaker: Also extremely overcooked. Couldn't really focus on the flavor over the roughness of the fish meat. Like the cauliflower and steak cubes, also comes with a candle under the plate to keep it boiling hot, but it was definitely overcooked before it got to our table. Service wasn't particularly outstanding nor awful, but it did feel like they still weren't completely sure what they needed to do to check up on tables in between ordering and paying. The place looked pretty clean and spacious. We sat at a table by the wall with a semi-circle sofa seat and it was a bit uncomfortable. The table pillar is extremely thick, so all of our feet were constantly in a V shape with both heels touching. Overall, the place is middling. The flavors were pretty good, but the meat and fish were way too overcooked for me to want to come back for any more.

Absolutely loved J & X Bistro! The Peking duck was juicy with perfectly crispy skin, and the Fresh Fish and Rice Noodles were delicious and full of flavor. Great food, friendly service, and a wonderful dining experience

Let's call this a snapshot review as this is based on one weekday lunch and a takeout to try more from their menu. After a bank errand, I walked down Jackson and, after a friend shared a photo of the newly opened business that replaced Bund Shanghai Restaurant, I stood in front of the restaurant and read their menu (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=72&select=2O3O7udybZbN_r-jyBMLhg). There were signs on the sidewalk (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=72&select=fAtEosnqCIMOj9LTjm2Ruw), (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=72&select=1R0P3WlJXwor7ddBLXhp8A), that gave more information. Figuring that I would eventually try this, I opted to walk in and found a table along the left wall near the greeting area. After being offered a menu, the waitress asked me whether I wanted water or tea; I opted for the latter. When the Mandarin speaking waitress came to my table, I asked her a few questions about the menu before ordering my lunch. I decided to try the Jiangxi rice noodles (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=7F9zRa_gYoaR07d5S_at_Q); fortunate to be able to read a few words in Chinese, I noticed this stir-fried noodles dish including shredded beef. As part of their soft opening promotion, Diet Coke (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=24&select=FoFY-Znu0km2sAH22S-5VA). In addition, my waitress gifted me a small dish of seasoned peanuts to munch on while waiting for my meal (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=IY507pFfx-xt8Xw4wjfrsQ). Back to the noodles, my senses heightened in seeing and smelling my food. It is certainly not your typical plate of chow mein. The flavors were bold and initially a moderate spiciness that paired well with the tubular shaped noodles. The plate got spicier at the end when I found all the chopped jalapeno peppers there. I will order this again. Being a huge hot & sour soup fan and the cuisine of this restaurant being a Northern style, I added a large order to take home (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=TGCU_1Lwyqt7mYYjzX2Rpw), which was two large tubs that were nicely packed. I reheated a half container as part of my dinner (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&select=B8-nLZI3dMWMhFczUuT2aw) and enjoyed it. It is very basic with shredded tofu, bamboo shoots, wood ear fungus, and scallions. The soup is slightly on the thicker side and had a faint sweet aftertaste. I had the rest of this as part of another dinner a couple days later. I enjoyed my food and the two ladies who served my meal were friendly and attentive. I asked the Mandarin speaking one about the restaurant's background and learned that the owner has two other restaurants within a block's radius, Chong Qing Xiao Mian and Fusion Dumpling. I will be back to explore more items on the menu though the noodle options are limited. The menu is more geared towards family style dining. The lady recommended their signature dishes being the green popcorn pepper fish filet and the steamed spare ribs with rice flour. For appetizers, she mentioned the spicy toothpick lamb. Hope to try one of them next visit.

I am from JiangXi province, so I can better comment on this place. I only ordered 1)rice noddles, 2) spicy pork, and 3) the free spring rolls. The rice noddles, that should represent Nanchang and JiangXi was not good! It's not JiangXi flavor at all. As a dish by itself, I think the chilly oil in the dish overpowers other flavors. I would suggest to add more soy sauce to balance the flavor. The spicy pork is good and lives up to the restaurant's name. The place is kinda cute, very European and Chinese at the same time. The restaurant is new and people are still learning their groves. I would also suggest that to place a water jar at the table, so we don't have to ask for water when it's busy. I will come back to try other Jiangxi dishes.

The black bean noodles and wings are always a hit (hot and fresh). service: they were fast at first and then getting the bill took a bit but you just have to flag them down. misc: we came in around 2pm on sat with a group of 15 and got seated really fast! maybe it was luck haha. they also have two bathrooms in the back. parking can be tough but i don't usually have to walk more than 10-15 mins.

San Tung was one of the only busy spots on Irving Street during a weekday lunch hour, which felt like a promising sign. We were seated pretty quickly at a large round table across from two other diners, which was totally fine. And after looking around at everyone's tables, it was clear that these two dishes were the most popular items. Since this was my first time trying the dry fried chicken wings, I was surprised that they came out coated in a thick, sticky sauce--so not necessarily "dry" in the way I expected. Flavor-wise, they leaned more sweet than savory. I think this dish would be a big hit for people who enjoy sweet and sour or kung pao-style chicken, which isn't usually my personal preference. My husband definitely enjoyed them though, so I can see why they have such a loyal following. The black bean noodles were warm and comforting, with a nice homey feel. The sauce had good flavor, although I thought it leaned a little bland and wasn't quite as thick or rich in texture as I personally prefer. Overall, San Tung was a fun spot to finally try, especially given how much hype surrounds those wings. I'd definitely come back with a bigger group of friends so we could order more dishes and get a better feel for the menu, but I probably wouldn't come back on my own for anything in particular.

The Spicy Garlic Pork with vegetables was HOT and there was no escape: Like an opponent's chess pieces trying to grab your king, one bite after the next puts you in jeopardy. It was a good kind of peril. The Chow Mein Select noodles with lots of fresh crunchy vegetables was nicely executed with firm, plump chow mein. It was a very generous helping. I thanked my stars for the relief of white rice. The quart of hot and sour soup will have to wait until tomorrow, so much delicious food. For vegetarians, lots of menu options for you as well as those looking for unique dumplings and lots of offal dishes for those who crave it. Ambience is fresh, polished, non-touristy yet in the very heart of Chinatown where this is not always guaranteed. Locals and visitors alike, bookmark this restaurant.
