Was looking for authentic Szechuan cuisine in San Francisco and this perfectly satisfied my cravings. The only thing I was disappointed by at the end of the meal is that Sichuan Home is not closer to where I live! :( What I ordered : + Eggplant in Garlic Sauce 鱼香茄子 [4.5/5] - Really great dish! The sauce on top is really flavorful and unique. The only thing I didn't like was that the eggplant is crunchy in some parts and mushy in others. + Fish Fillet and Chinese Cabbage in Hot Chili Sauce 水煮鱼 [5/5] - SUPER spicy and chock-full of fish and cabbage. The flavor of this is very impressive and the portion size is perfect. + Couples Delight (?) [5/5] - I think this was the dish we got (by recommendation of the server). It's the sliced beef and tripe and it was SOOOO freaking good. I would get this again and again. Service was extremely friendly and very Chinese. Quick heads up that they prefer that you pay in cash. We weren't paying attention and pushed inside one restaurant. One quick scan, left. Wrong door. My son didn't see my cue and I had to text him to leave and go a few doors down to Sichuan Home where I'd just been seated, a beautiful oasis offering classic Sichuan dishes. The food was sensational and we felt spoiled by the experience: The owner gracefully and graciously served us won ton soup and we enjoyed every crisp bite of dry fried green beans. Super spicy beef in red chili sauce was the perfect counterpoint to honey walnut prawns, an indulgent dish. The restaurant was elegant and tastefully decorated. The Michelin recommendation impressed me and they deserve it. If you're looking for spicy done right, get the beef in red chili sauce that'll challenge your palate but allow you to taste the dish. Lamb pieces are small and shredded, you will have to dig around for them. Generously amount of potato slices, lotus root slices, bean sprouts, and mushroom. SERVICE: (Here is the tea!) Assuming she is the manager/owner (the lady in short hair), she checked on us to see if we were ready to order. She then started recommending dishes. According to her, they a celebrating a Chinese festival so the crab or lobster are half off. Well I didn't show interest (simply because I find crab and lobster too much work), my husband on the other hand was asking questions about them. Then he asked if I want to do it, I said I don't want it, but up to him. So he said no to the lady, because I was not up for it. The lady of course didn't take no for an answer, so she continued to sell it to my husband and said "oh but you are interested right? It's great price ($50). It's our special today" But we insisted we don't want it. And ordered the three dishes we want to try. The lady probably thought I don't speak Chinese. She complained to her coworker in Chinese saying how I didn't want the crab and so my husband couldn't order it even though he was very much interested. Sort of saying it's my fault that we didn't go for the $50 crab dish. I'm sure not everyone would get the dish every time she sells it. But because she was talking about me behind my back, I have to knock out one star from the experience. So meh on the service. It almost looked like bbq pork ribs but my oh my that cumin seasoning was magic dust Chefs special fish stew + tofu $26.95 not everything at Sichuan Home is spicy and this fish stew is so delicious, even spice lovers won't miss the spiciness Dan Dan noodles + pork $16.50 this is your typical recipe and I wasn't all that impressed so I would SKIP THIS! Duck and beer sauce $22.95 what an interesting dish that I've never seen before. You can't actually taste any beer and if it wasn't in the description, I would've never guessed. There were a lot of duck pieces though so I wouldn't order this again. I did enjoy the interesting konjac jelly slices in the mix Pea sprout garlic $16.95 another classic and if you find yourself in need of veggies to balance out your meal, this could be a treat, even though it's about 3x the price of raw ones at the market We dined at 5pm on a Saturday. There are parking spaces in the residential area within walking distance. Sichuan Home is a cozy restaurant so I'm glad we were there early as I'd probably not want to be there if it was crowded. Be prepared that you have to walk through the kitchen in order to get to the bathroom. The owner was very friendly and accommodating. If you're not sure about how spicy your tolerance is, she'll work with you to customize your preference. Dishes took about 15-20 to all arrive. Rice is $2 per small bowl. We've been going to this place for at least 10 years and it is still by far one of the best Sichuan restaurants in San Francisco. For my spouse and I, it is our favorite. The food is always excellent, super flavorful and consistently of the same quality. The prices are super reasonable. The service is friendly and fast. This place is legit Sichuan food (I lived in China so I have high standards ), if you are looking for American-Chinese food, I am sure they can do it, but might not be the best. I am surprised this place isn't getting a better rating. Good for us because there is almost never wait time to get a table. read more

I ordered three dishes from Sichhuan Home and they exhibited pretty consistent qualities: flavorful, generally well prepared, not overcooked and priced competitively with other mid-end Chinese restaurants in the area. The dishes came quickly out of the kitchen, and staff were very friendly and attentive. If I could ask for one improvement it would be for a more sophisticated flavor profile over the existing dominance of a single flavor in each dish. Not for the faint of heart! The dishes here are - true to Sichuan cuisine - spicy AF. Even the complimentary pickles were spicy! They do have some non-spicy dishes available, so for those looking not to upset their stomach, that is an option (then again, why go to a Sichuan place in the first place?!?). Spicy dishes ordered: preserved egg and tofu, potato noodles, and the spicy fish herb soup. Non-spicy dishes ordered: jellyfish, chow mein, and the dungeness crab with pumpkin. We received excellent service and food recommendations from our waitress, and they even stored the birthday cake for us and provided plating and utensils at no additional fee (we made sure to tip well). I love Lou's so off we went to Geary. I stumbled onto this Chinese restaurant a few doors down. Never heard of it but I wanted something warm all of the sudden. Sichuan organ meats in hot chili oil to the rescue on a cold day. The Chinese word for this dish is Mao Xue Wong. Honestly the best I have had inside and outside of China. Superb dish. Excellent for impressing your Chinese friends with. Authentic. Fried intestines is a guilty pleasure of mine. I ate quite a bit of that. Also super Chinese and something I would order all over again. For the whitie friends in your circle - pot stickers and kung pao chicken are decidedly Americanized. This restaurant is small and unnoticeable from outside but a real gem. Visited with family at dinnertime on a Monday night to find an almost empty restaurant. We were seated immediately and shortly after us, another family what seemed to be returning guests were seated and the manager/waittress soon came to take their order, as well as ours. We ordered the Couple's Delight, Beef in Special Chili Sauce, Sweet and Sour Pork Spareribs, Fish Filet and Cabbage in Chili Sauce, and a cold noodle with sliced chicken dish, and rice for the table. Our food came at a decent speed and the flavors were all so-so to me. Some dishes, the fish especially, were spicy but not as spicy as I've had at other Sichuan restaurants and I got more of the tongue numbing sensation than tongue-burning, sweating spice. I particularly enjoyed the sweet and sour spareribs, which were more sweet with no hints of sour, and would jump at the chance to order this again. Our dinner came out to a little bit under $100 which I felt was a bit pricey for the portions that were served. Would I come back to try other dishes? Potentially. Would those dishes be the level of spice I am looking for when eating at a Sichuan restaurant? Maybe. But I am in no rush to return. read more

Craving for some Sichuan food and decided to make a trip to Richmond to try this place out. Sichuan home was mentioned in the Michelin guide from 2013-2017 so was pretty excited and had high expectations for the food. THEY DID NOT DISAPPOINT!!!! There was only one server running the dinning area but seems like she got everything under control. Serving the tables and taking care of the Togo orders and didn't seem a bit overwhelmed. She also took the time to ask our spice tolerance and offer to make the dishes we ordered less spicy if we wished. Food was authentic and the Sichuan flavor is very in your face. At the end of the meal, my partner and I were sweating but can't stop because it's so addicting. Our favorite was the green peppercorn fish soup (recommended by the server, as the restaurant is known for their Sichuan fish). The fish is tender and packed with flavors that's somewhat refreshing and not too greasy. Definitely will come back again next time to tryout other dishes that seem interesting! read more

We shared the Chongqing Style Chicken which was very tasty - it was hot, crispy, and flavorful! Their menu is expansive and dishes are definitely full of spice. Food: 5/5. If they say mala in the dish name, they are not kidding. We got the fish in mala chili oil once and it was one of the spiciest dishes I've had in a restuarant. The fish was tender and juicy though, highly recommend the dish. They also have non-spicy food offerings like the beef ribs. The green beans are delicious with a tad bit of a spicy touch to it. I found Sichuan Home from the San Francisco Michelin Guide under Chinese restaurants. I did a grub hub to go order for pick up. Arrived a little early and they were still working on my order but the time promised was accurate. Good packaging (nothing was leaking!), solid good old fashioned Chinese food! I ordered the Mongolian beef, mushroom with baby bok choy, lemon chicken, veggie chow mein and veggie fried rice! Everything was edible, no fat, not drench in oil, great tasting and fresh. Enjoyed every last bite and no, I did not find anything too spicy. The Mongolian beef had a hint but not spicy at all! The lemon chicken was fried well, wish the pieces were a little smaller. Excellent and food coma inducing dinner! Came here on a Saturday night with 2 others for dinner, enjoyed a TON of amazing food, and struggled to stay awake the rest of the night. It's a small interior so the wait could be short or long based on how many people are almost done eat vs willingness to stay and wait for a table. They told us 20 min and we were seated around 15-20 min. The food: - Cucumber in spicy garlic sauce: nice and refreshing. I'd honestly recommend getting these mid-meal. Perfect as palate cleansers between dishes - Chongqing Style Spicy Chicken: basically spicy popcorn chicken. Nothing to write home about, but you can bet they were enjoyable to eat! A good crowd pleaser. Would also recommend dipping the chicken into the sauce of other dishes to try new delicious combinations. - Dan Dan Noodles: the noodles were cooked well and the sauce and pork were tasty. Wish the noodles themselves had a bit more flavor, but it you eat them alongside drinking some broth, it's great. They were also super nice about bringing 3 smaller bowls and splitting the dish among us. - Eggplant with pork in garlic sauce: this was honestly my favorite dish. The eggplant was perfectly cooked and the sauce had SO MUCH flavor. I'd say this is a must-get - Spicy Fish & Beer and Chinese Herb Spice: this was actually 2 dishes, the fish and the beef dishes. When my friend asked which they preferred, the waiter mentioned that we could get both combined. I'm glad we listened to them. My preference was the beef, but both were so good- flavorful, spicy, and tender. This is definitely a must-try dish. And the sauce worked very well with the fried chicken! - Salt & Pepper calamari: not the calamari you're used to, but super good nonetheless. The calamari was nice and tender while the breading had a great crunch. Topped with salt, pepper, and garlic! Enjoyed eating by itself, but also dipping into other sauces! Portions here are fairly big so come with an appetite. And I'd highly recommend going with a few people (not too big of a group given restaurant size) so you can try more items family style. I think I need to come here again and try different things from the menu. Today was just a lazy day for me, being at home all day even though I was having a day off from work. The forecast was also not helping by telling us this evening is supposedly to be raining, when as of a matter of fact it is actually dry like spruce burger without cheese. I was in the mood for something funky this evening, So I got myself orders of Pork belly in brown sauce (hong shao rou), Pig intestine stir fry and Pig brain in Szechuan chili oil. Man o man .. The pig brain was good but I didn't know it would come in such a big portion! I think I will finish this in two weeks or more (is that even possible?) Or maybe toss it, gotta be careful with the cholesterol. The pork belly in brown sauce was good but it was way too fatty since the meat ratio to the skin are very minimal. The pig intestine was crunchy, spicy and this is the one I enjoyed the most out of the three orders I did this evening. What a beautiful hidden gem to discover on a rare sunny day in the Richmond District. We took advantage of the one day break in torrential rains to try this place, which we've had on our list for years. With several Michelin recommendations (a more casual designation than the star) plastered in the windows we suspected we were in for a quality culinary experience. What really elevated it was the friendly and enthusiastic attitude of our server May (maybe an owner?). She ushered us in and recommended the crab and noodle special which was a feast fit for a queen! Buttery, ginger infused noodles capped off by succulent fresh crab did not disappoint. Cold evenings call for hot spicy foods! Located on Geary by Park Presidio, Sichuan Home may look shabby on the outside, but as you walk in, the inside is filled with the smell of the aromatic chillies they're cooking up inside. The restaurant itself is very small inside so the tables are very very close together; the lady at the table behind us slammed her chair into ours from just barely pulling it out to sit in. They also had to set up one of those pull out chair/table things to extend our table space and we only ordered 3 dishes; there just wasn't enough room on their tiny table. The 4 people table is so small/narrow that had two people sat on my side, we would not have fit even though I'm a very petite girl. All this aside, the service is great for the most part and we appreciated the suggestions for what to order. However, I wasn't a fan of the waitress asking us three times if we wanted to "upgrade" our fish stew to live fish for $10. We opted not to. Their prices are a lot steeper than your average Chinese food place, and on top of the small portions, makes it difficult for me to revisit them again soon. We only really ended up here since our usual Taisan Huakee on the other side of Geary was closed on a Tuesday. -fish and pickled cabbage (5/5): This one was our favorite; a hot fish stew with pickled cabbage, tender pieces of fillet, and bean vermicelli. The closer we got to the bottom, the spicier it got as it's filled with red and green chillies. Portion side, this was the only one that I felt was worth it. This definitely hit the spot especially on tonight! -chef's special vegetable (5/5): A stir fry with shredded fresh taro, fried taro, and some chives. I've always ordered this one here since they're the only place I've seen it. But because I've been here many times and have ordered this before, I can safely say that the portion is a lot smaller now. There are also very few chives; you could probably count on two hands the pieces of chives in here. In other words, not much vegetable, lots of taro. We didn't mind, as the taro is equally good; still really enjoyed this one! -bean jelly in chili sauce (1/5): Now this one was disappointing. When I think of liang fen, I think of a cold, tspicy, vinegary, flavorful bean jelly. This one was lukewarm, did not have any flavor, and my lips were coated with oil afterwards. There was no spice to it and we were sorely disappointed about this one. I brought basically the entire thing home, thinking of revamping it with some seasoning and vinegar on my own. For sure will not order this again. -twice cooked pork (3/5): The waitress suggested we switch the regular pork to their la rou, or their preserved pork. Honestly not sure if this was the move since when it came, I was in shock how small the portion was. Unfortunately I did not grab a pic since this was the one on the foldable chair thing. The plate itself was huge, the pork was not. Blended in on a flowery plate, if you look closely, you'll see that there aren't that many pieces on there. Other than the few measly pieces of pork, it was filled with onions/leeks? Not sure but it was definitely a filler. The flavor was okay on this one and my friend had said hopefully they at least make their preserved pork in house but they didn't announce this when they suggested this to us so I wouldn't count on it. I would not order this again. Overall, steep prices, small portions, inconvenient seating arrangements; don't think I'll be back in the near future as there are far better places elsewhere. read more

We were a group of 8 who dined here for a friends birthday and it's truly a great place to enjoy hearty Asian food at super affordable rates. Ambience: It's a small casual restaurant and on the weekday we visited, it was completely empty. Street parking was easy to find but I imagine it would be busier and harder on weekends. Food: We ordered the spicy fish, onion pancake, smashed cucumber, clay pot beef, dan dan noodles, mapo tofu, chow mein, and tea smoked duck. Everything tasted great but had a similar flavor profile with the Szechuan spices. Our favorites were the dan dan noodles, mapo tofu, and pancakes. We also got the fresh watermelon juice which added a refreshing sweet balance to the meal. Service: The servers were extremely friendly and accommodating. They were able to provide several vegetarian options and also allowed us to serve our own birthday cake at the end. They adjusted portion sizes as well based on our group size. A very delicious, affordable Sichuan spot in the Richmond. The lady helping us with our meal was the sweetest and even offered us free dessert. I would recommend the cumin lamb and spicy beef short ribs; both had tender meat and wonderful flavor. Avoid getting the pan-fried pork buns; I also wish everything we got was spicier but overall enjoyed my meal here! read more

I was VERY impressed with my experience here!! I had an early-ish dinner at 5:45 and it was empty when we came (which was very surprising for a Michelin Guide restaurant), but that just meant the service was super fast and superb. They even gave a dessert on the house of brown sugar rice cakes! The star of the show is definitely the fish stew. It came with so much fish, which was the perfect flaky soft texture and packed with flavor. I also was a big fan of the Szechuan chicken, again so flavorful and a great crunchy texture. Don't underestimate the vegetables on the menu as well, it was sooo garlicky yum! Cant wait to go back! read more
