Spicy House was recommended by a friend. But after trying it today it's not worth it. Lunch specials come with egg roll, small soup and steamed rice. The eggplant tofu lunch special at $10.95 is cheap but not good. The sauce is salty and the tofu is mushy. The orange chicken lunch special at $10.95 is soo bland and flavorless. Saw this spot on social media and thought I'd give it a try during my lunch break. There were plenty of tables available on a Tuesday around noon. It's your typical hole-in-the-wall spot, but that doesn't really bear any significance when it comes to rating the food. GARLIC PEA SPROUTS ~ The greens were not very tender and weren't easy to chew. Flavor was also a little bland. 3/5 SALT AND PEPPER CHICKEN WINGS LUNCH PLATE ~ The 5 wings were crispy and crunchy, but small in size. The chicken meat was dry, and the flavor was basically just salt and jalapeño peppers. On the plus side, you get all flats, which I prefer over drumettes. I think I should have gotten the wings as an appetizer (6 wings) rather than as a lunch plate (5 wings) with white rice. If you opt for chow mein or fried rice instead of plain rice, you'll have to pay an extra $3. The menu says soup is included, but we were not offered any. However, an egg roll is given with all lunch plates. PORK CHOPS WITH BLACK PEPPER SAUCE ~ My guy ordered this and thought it was good. The pork chops were nicely fried in a light batter and then covered with a savory black pepper sauce. There was a generous amount of meat. Basil Pork Chow Fun: Unfortunately, this was my least favorite dish. It was really lacking in flavor and definitely needed more sauce. The noodles were basically just stir-fried with basil and chilies, but that alone wasn't enough to give it flavor. I ended up using the sauce from the beef dish to add flavor because the noodles were lacking. They do have sauces available at the table, but I feel like the dish itself should already be seasoned from the get go. I also wasn't a huge fan of the noodle type because it wasn't the typical chow fun noodle I'm used to. Mapo Tofu: I usually expect Mapo tofu to have some level of spice and a little kick, but this one didn't really have that. Instead, it was mostly just salty. I love salty dishes, but this was even too salty for me and felt like it was missing other flavors, maybe some sweetness or more complexity. I also wish it came with more ground pork and sauce. The tofu pieces were larger than what I'm used to for this dish, which I didn't necessarily mind, but because there wasn't much sauce, the tofu didn't really absorb the flavors the way I like. Szechuan Spicy Beef: This was easily my favorite dish of the three. It had the most flavor, a lot of sauce, and the beef was very tender. I loved that it had the numbing Szechuan spice without being overwhelmingly spicy, so you could still enjoy the dish. I actually wished the Mapo tofu had this same level of spice and flavor. This was the one dish I would order again if I came back. Overall: Since I didn't really enjoy two out of the three dishes we ordered, I don't think I would return. There wasn't anything that stood out enough that made me want to come back and try more dishes, especially since two dishes were lacking flavor. The value was good though, portions were generous and the prices were reasonable. Parking can be a little difficult since it's mostly street parking in a busy area. There were lots of seasonings on top but still lacked flavor inside the meat. I placed an online order for like 11 dishes including a small size party tray for their house fried rice. I arrived about 15 mins early and it was already packed up and prepared. The staff were surprised at the order but were super lovely and helpful. I'm glad I tipped them ahead because it is a lot of work to put the dishes together in boxes for safe transport. My party included Chinese, Burmese, korean people and they all loved the food.
