Cute place-yummy pizza. Three stars is due to the lackluster service. Our party of six sat for quite a while before any greeting. Water for the table was an afterthought and came after two of our three pizzas were delivered and the two soups came even after that. Most of the party was halfway through their meals before the third Pizza was delivered. Then we sat an watched several servers and employees passed by our table multiple times without asking how things were, if we needed anything else or if we were ready for the bill. Always greeted with a smile by the owners or one of their helpful staff; Hapgood has an array of gourmet food that seems to not belong in the small town of Peru, Vermont. Bakers racks line the front of the store and are filled with local kitchen trinkets and gadgets that anyone interested in food may find useful as well as entertaining. Martha Stewart: get here already to discover and introduce the world over to a jewel of New England. The store, a mix of old and new, pays homage to its hallowed past while also embracing whiffs of the Hamptons and Brooklyn without the stuffiness. The shelves of the store are lined with artisanal gems like small batch beers to candles and the finest syrup ever to hit your palette. The decor, with its marble countertop and its eccentric wallpaper encircling the back of house bar with its 8 drought lines and regional spirits, are welcoming, warm and fresh. The food? Yes, I saved the best for last. The lattes were exceptional. As for the oat pancakes with blueberries and raspberries? Perhaps the greatest shortstack I've ever consumed. My wife thoroughly enjoyed the homemade biscuit stacked with local bacon egg and cheese. The wait staff could not have been friendlier. The owner, Julie, was an absolute joy to speak with. We have the good fortune to live down the road from this store/restaurant. We find ourselves there sometimes for breakfast, sometimes for lunch and sometimes for dinner. The food is consistently good and determinedly interesting. What we like most, however, is the way in which it draws our little town together. It gives Peru a place to gather, to share and to have fun. read more

This was an unexpected little gem in the middle of nowhere. Lunch was fantastic - there were 6 of us and everyone was pleased with their food. The duck fat fries were delicious and just the right size portion. It's a charming little store/restaurant, with friendly service and a surprisingly good beer and wine selection. They even have a little bar for cocktails. Came back for breakfast the next day and had another great experience. Definitely recommended. read more

This place is so wonderful and as a vistor to the area, I'm just sad it's not near my home and we found it the day before leaving! I believe it's been recently redone (??) and my Dad came home from there saying my sister, mom and I would like it after having their turkey hash and eggs for breakfast. The salads were great, ambience wonderful and I can't wait to get back there next year when we return. I really appreciate this type of wholesome and delicious food...GREAT place! They also have cute gifts there like mason jar glasses, maple syrup, granola, etc. Next year, I hope to gather the troops for a wine and pizza evening. read more

Refreshing variety on the menu with several vegetarian options. The atmosphere was a bit hectic as we were there on a holiday weekend at peak time, and the eatery shares space with a general store, but that wasn't a problem since I was there for a casual lunch. I also enjoyed poking around the store, which sells food and eco-friendly products. The servers varied from seeming somewhat stressed to a bit dazed given the busy environment, but they were friendly and fairly attentive nonetheless. read more

The "branding" and organic ideas of JJ Hapgood are great. However, if they could just get one order correct, that would be awesome. Whether we are eating in or taking out, a piece of our order is consistently missing, a substitution avoided (even when the substitution is repeated back i.e. goat cheese instead of mozzarella, not too difficult), pizza dough undercooked and more. After about 5 mess-ups I finally called and complained and we got a half of a pizza credit. Every time since, there is some error in our order, and we vow to not go back but we do. This time is most definitely the last. read more

As locals in the Londonderry area, my family regularly visits jj hapgood for their half price pizza nights (8$ beats $16 for a personal sized pizza). Pizza's there are always awesome and the dining environment is cozy/rustic. That being said, we recently came on a Tuesday, expecting to be able to order a full price pizza. Unfortunately, the management at Hapgood had recently chosen to limit their menu options for 'taco Tuesdays' to strictly tacos. Unfortunately there were no veggie options(just chicken, beef, and fish), so we chose the obvious alternative. Thank goodness for Cilantro's in Manchester! we have been visiting vermont for nearly 40 years and have a home near peru, but had not been to j.j.hapgood much because there was not much that we wanted there. we weren't into buying 'stuff'. on the recommendation of my daughter, who started going to vermont as an infant, we found this 'reimagined' gem with fabulous ten mile views and a large and lovely marble patio, a grassy lawn and good food. we found ourselves going there several times over the past week and every time was more than pleasant. read more

I want to love this place -- and in fact I used to love this place. It has delicious food plus unique, "made in Vermont" items as well as staples. But, as others have commented, the service leaves something to be desired. The employees are unfriendly and unhelpful. A couple of weeks ago, my husband and I tried to eat lunch there. It was busy, and after waiting by the entrance to the cafe for at least five minutes, I asked someone who worked there if she knew how long the wait would be. "No," was the response. "Uh, is there someone else who can help me?" I asked. "Ask a waiter" was the response. No offer to help, not to mention that there was no way to distinguish between waiters and other staff. We stood around a few minutes longer, long enough to hear two employees behind the counter literally yelling at each other: "You made me wait, now you have to wait for me!" We left. A few days ago, I dropped by to pick up a few items, and there were two people in line in front of me. After helping the first person, the cashier just disappeared. No explanation, and no one else offered to help, despite the fact that there were at least five other people running around behind the counter. She finally came back, again without a word. One evening I asked if they served breakfast, and the person behind the counter looked at me as though I had two heads: "You want breakfast now?" "No, at breakfast time." (FYI: They do serve breakfast, but we didn't go back.) Do yourself a favor and go up the road to the Bromley Market. It's not quite as big, but the food is great and everyone who works there is friendly and helpful. read more

We have been to the J.J. Hapgood General store for lunch 3 times since Christmas.. the first 2 were over the top fabulous..yesterday was the third... less fabulous..first I ordered the Chicken Asian soup, it was greasy, contained a few strips of red peppers, a small piece of stringy dark meat chicken and had no flavor, this was the opinion of 3 of us...I went to the register to order another lunch and the owner was taking orders, I told him about the soup and he replied,"someone must not have reached into the bottom of the pot ( he made no attempt to offer me something else at no charge!} I then ordered ceasar salad with chicken..it came without chicken, was sent back and when it returned there was nothing but scrappy looking greasy stringy pieces..it was paid foe and not eaten..so I paid for 2 different lunches and ate neither. To be fiar my daughter and son in law both had wonderful sandwiches.. I will go back but if I have another experience as this one..I will not return read more
