After an early morning of skiing, we decided to have a late lunch at JJ Hapgood General Store and Eatery in Peru, VT. The marble walkways outside offer a hint of what you are about to experience. Upon entering, the simple maple and birch tables and seats let you know that the lunch experience you are about to have is anything but ordinary. Nothing melted this cold and tired soul like the Soup Du Jour- a hearty barley mushroom soup that stuck to my bones- and a nice Local VT IPA on tap. My son and wife had the Margherita Pizza, and I had a turkey club- all were excellent and cooked in the wood pizza oven. On the lighter side was a Kale Arugula Salad with Chickpeas and Maple Candied Walnuts that looked amazing. All in all, this was a great place for lunch for the family- seated was limited, but well worth the rate. read more

As a local resident, we routinely stop in to visit and meet friends for coffee or a treat. The coffee is fresh and rich; it blows the doors off the others in the area. I have been going to JJ hapgood for groceries/ food for a few years now, and although the store itself is absolutely adorable, I am always disappointed by their lack of vegan options. They have no clearly labeled vegan options for breakfast or lunch at their restaurant, although you can make a couple of items plant-based by making some substitutions. No vegan baked goods either. The staff is always super friendly and goes out of their way to help with dietary needs, but I do wish they had a vegan section on their menu, or at least an option or two, since I know many local vegetarians and vegans that would be coming here all the time if they did. read more

Extremely disappointed in how a recent order for Christmas Day was handled. Several weeks ago I called the store and spoke with Andre. I asked if there were any special arrangements being made for Christmas Day meals. He informed me that Beef Wellington with wild rice and roasted root vegetables would be available for pick up at $28 per person. I ordered four meals for pick up on Christmas day. A few days later my husband and I stopped by the store and personally spoke face to face with Andre to confirm the order and to offer a deposit to secure the order. He said that that was not necessary, wrote down our order and confirmed a 1 o'clock pick up time for Christmas day. We were very pleased to find out that it could be done on Christmas day. As a matter fact, he told us that he himself would be there that day to personally handle the orders. Since today is Christmas Eve, we wanted to confirm our pick up time and called the store only to be informed that there would be no orders for pick up on Christmas Day. This was difficult and shocking news to hear as our Christmas Day plans depended on the reliable information and confirmation that we received two weeks ago by one of their employees. Now we have to scramble to make other arrangements in order to salvage our Christmas day. You can only imagine how difficult this is being that today is Christmas Eve. read more

The food is VERY good here. But I'm only giving 3 stars due to the lack of good service. They weren't even that busy. Also, they charge $4 for a 16 oz iced tea that is full of ice, refills extra. So save your money and get warm water while it's 85 degrees in the scorching sun on their nice outdoor patio that doesn't include any shade. read more

We had breakfast at this very cute location. It is part general store and part restaurant. I had the oat pancakes which tasted charred from the grill so it was a little off putting. My husband had eggs benedict with avocado and a side of potatoes. He said the eggs were ok, but the potatoes were amazing. Our waitress was only ok, not the friendliest and she brought everyone's food out, but forgot my husband's. We had to get the other waitress (who seemed very plesant) to help us so he could get his food. On Thur-Sat they also serve dinner and have a bar for drinks from 5-9p.m. read more

Hapgood's is a local gem. They have wonderful pizza and coffee, and sell a variety of local goods in the shop. I regularly get pizza on the way down from Bromley after a long day working on the hill. We were lucky to be seated without a reservation at this remarkably exquisite eatery on a Saturday night (go early)! We sampled two appetizers which were so tasty including scallops with cauliflower cream with sun choke chips and Brussels sprouts And garlic each dish wood-fired in their brick oven! We stopped in here right at lunch and got sat right away. They gave us water in cute mason glasses immediately and then we ordered. We got a bacon chicken ranch pizza which my brother describes as "really ranchy" however we all had a slice and would give it a 4 1/2 out of 5. I got the market salad and added chicken. Now they didn't add a whole bunch of chicken. But over all the salad was delicious especially for someone who loves all fruits and veggies because they add in the fresh ones they have. My mom got the club sandwich and she said it was really good, it was pretty big and came with a pickle. The waitress was a littttllleeee slow. But everyone was sweet. So no complaining. Bottom line: J.J. Hapgood has GREAT food and a great atmosphere. The pizza is fantastic and the soups are what usually inspire our trip down the road. In fact, the consistent greatness of the food and our overall love for this place managed to pull this review up from 1-2 STARS (which is what our last two visits deserved) to 4. To put it as nicely as possible, the service is lacking. Here are a few pointers to make your experience a little better: 1. Don't be shy: if the server doesn't arrive to take your order within 30 mins from the time you have been seated, he/she probably forgot about you. Go to the counter and ask to place an order. Same thing goes for other essentials (e.g., water). 2. Follow up on your order with the server: if it feels like it's been a while since you ordered (around 50 mins for us today), there's a good chance your server forgot to put your order in or "someone else took your order". This happened last time to us as well. 3. If you order soup, make sure to remind the server that you ordered it; soup should not take 45 mins to prep. 4. Take a deep breath, look outside at the snow falling, admire the scenery that inspired Diane Keaton in the film Baby Boom, chill out - you're in VT and remember that the food is well worth the wait! read more

We generally only get to Vermont for one weekend every Fall, but we always make it a point to stop in at Hapgood's in Peru at least once! Their sandwiches are so fresh and filling, and the staff are always friendly and helpful. The store is full of regional wines, old-timey products and cute gifts for the kids at home. I am so happy to have to experienced a dinner at JJ Hapgood. Despite a large group the service, food and atmosphere was perfect. I would hold the food up to any restaurant i have ever eaten at across the globe. The trout was perfectly cooked in skin with mushrooms. The planko tofu ( I split with a friend because I couldn't decide) in curry was Awesome. Even non tofu fans would love it. I don't eat meat, but the steaks were perfectly prepared. Server Renee and owner Juliette were so nice and amazing. I would give this place more than 5 stars if I could! I will be back when I wrangle another invitation to Peru! A quintessential general store with the most wonderful staff. We stopped here twice during our trip in Vermont and enjoyed a delicious grilled cheese sandwich and a kale salad.
