The establishment is narrow in layout so it gets a bit crowded with patrons walking by each other as they either wait in line or walk to find a table to sit at. I've always had good experiences at JP licks despite local opinions of the place, I personally enjoy their ice cream and hope to try their hot chocolate one of these cold days. If I could give zero stars, I most certainly would. I had an odd experience in JP Licks. For starters, my friends and I went in the store with a pizza. Our mistake, they are a kosher cafe. We didn't realize and didn't notice the sign on the door as most people often don't read all small signs on doors. Totally our bad. Instead of relaying that information in a polite and respectful way, the staff working decided to "gang" up on us for lack of better words. One of the people working pointed out my friends pizza box saying "that can't be in here" then started explaining that they are a kosher business and then another worker in a incredibly rude way said "we have a sign on the door." And I feel like understandably so, it's not so crazy we didn't see the sign. We didn't understand the negatively and rudeness, it just seems unnecessary. They also seemed bothered they had customers. Such a weird experience. They also got mad at another friend of mine for using the restroom after 3 people came out as it seemed like one of them was drunk and threw up. My friend who really needed to pee saw the empty bathroom that was completely clean and decided to go in. After she got in the staff started being rude to me complaining that my friend used the bathroom after those people left. I rarely write negative reviews, but my recent experience at J.P. Licks on Boylston Street was so unpleasant that I feel it's important to share. We arrived 10 minutes before closing time (just before 12:00 AM), hoping to grab a couple of desserts because it was our anniversary and J.P licks' door was open.There were two staff members inside, and the male server kindly told us we could buy a cookie or a brownie. Since the brownies were pre-packaged and ready-made, there was no preparation required, so we decided to stay and choose what we wanted. While we were discussing our options, we asked the male server if the chocolate croissant listed on the board was still available. Out of nowhere, the female server started shouting at us, telling us to "just go away" because they were closing. We calmly explained that the male server had told us we could buy desserts, but she ignored us and continued to yell. At this point, the male server also told us that we can't buy the cookies and brownies and asked us to leave. To make matters worse, she insulted one of my friends who is dyslexic, mocking his speech and shouting, "Learn how to speak clearly." This was not just rude, it was blatantly racist. We are Indian, and it felt like her behavior was racially motivated. The way she spoke to us was demeaning and unnecessary, making us feel completely disrespected because of our ethnicity. At this point, another staff member came in to try and de-escalate the situation, which we appreciated, but it didn't erase the fact that we were still treated poorly. Despite his attempt to calm things down, we were still humiliated and made to feel unwelcome. He did agree that she was being racist to us and told us that we are not at fault and apologised but told us that we need to leave. We were only trying to buy a couple of simple desserts. The male server had agreed to serve us, and there was no issue until the female server's rude, racist behavior escalated the situation. If she didn't want to serve us, a simple "no" would have sufficed, but instead, we were treated with hostility and thrown out without cause. I am incredibly disappointed by how we were treated, especially considering how respectful and calm we were. This experience was not only rude but also overtly discriminatory. I won't be returning to this location, and I highly recommend that others avoid it as well unless management takes serious action to address the unprofessional and racist behavior of some of their staff. I don't even want to give this place a single star, but I wont be able to post my review without it, therefore I have to. read more

The set-up is unique being a college campus location, so there is plenty of seating, both inside and outside. Including, comfy lounge couches that provides the "cafe" element. I have to be honest and say that I found the ice cream to be extremely overpriced and the service to be extremely unfriendly - to the point where I almost walked out. I haven't tried this franchise before and after this experience I highly doubt I'll be trying it again. The ice cream wasn't awful, and despite the prices and it being a local chain, I may have given 3 stars, but the service absolutely blew, the guy was really confrontational while also being disinterested and abrasive, and even if it would have been one of my favorite ice cream places, when the price is this high, you really expect the best of everything just to justify it. I can always count on their amazing hard fro yo mint chocolate chip - it is DELICIOUS! And fro yo is good for me right? Like a salad? :) My only complaint about this spot - though minor... I needed to use the facilities before heading back out into the night. The line is tight and consistently long - it is roped and keeps two rows of people VERY tightly together so it is nigh impossible to get through to walk to the back of the restaurant which is where most of the seating for the place is and also where the restroom is at. SO, you get through the two rows of line which leads you to the front door completely screwing you from going to sit in the back or using the restroom...without squeezing through the throng of humans vying for their treats. read more

Me and my friends had just left a concert and we all decided to go get some ice cream. We went to jp licks, the line wasn't too bad when we arrived. I was chatting with my friend in line, but I don't have the best hearing so I missed what one of the workers said to me behind the counter. I said politely "I'm sorry, could you repeat that?" and the employee snapped at me and said in a very snarky, overdramatic tone: "I said what can I get for you." She was extremely rude, mumbling under her breath and scoffing the whole time she was making my ice cream (which by the way was a small cup of just regular ice cream, wow your life is so hard!) One of my other friends is sensitive to milk because of her stomach so she was asking about the milk options they have for their frappes, but when she tried asking the worker, she rudely said "I'm not dealing with this tonight" and stormed off like a baby. The lady at the register acted like her attitude was a normal thing and barely ever apologized when we talked to her about her coworker. I have never had this rude of an encounter at any restaurant or ice cream shop in my entire life. The server's name was Caroline. It's not my fault you are still working at an ice cream shop at your grown age, no excuse to treat people like they don't have feelings as well.
