I mean - how can I be anything but insanely happy after visiting for free cone day? The line was long, but they did a really good job getting people in and out quickly. There was a woman standing at the beginning of the shop to hand out menus so people could decided which flavor to order while they finished their wait. I was worried that they might be running out of flavors because they'd been giving out free ice cream all day, so I had a couple of back ups. Not necessary! They had my Americone Dream. I got a cup of it and left happy. The scoop was a good size. Some people got cones, some got cups with cones on top. Nothing was off limits. Lastly, everyone was friendly. We and our kids love this place! Of all the many ice cream stores on Newbury or downtown Boston this is our favorite. They have so many delicious flavors it's wonderful to try different ones depending on our mood. The service is friendly and efficient. I stopped in on cold Sunday afternoon while on a walk. The city had lifted the vaccine requirement. I went to Emack and Bolios first but they were closed. I ordered a small dish and cost 6.75. I saw the sitting area all roped off. I was standing reading the pictures on the wall. No one else in store except woman serving and at register. She then tell me; Sir, you can't eat in here.... Finally, finally I got to try out the new Ben and jerry flavor that was isn't yet available in grocery stores! My friend and I shared a two scoop waffle cone with the new truffle kurfuffle flavor and coffee buzz buzz. They were delicious!!!! The price is a little steep at 8 dollars but we enjoyed every bite. On a side note Ben and jerry isn't as sweet as hagaan daz which is a huge plus to be my liking. Pros: -Two employees working around 7PM tonight were beyond helpful! They introduced us to the newest flavor (Salted Caramel Brown-ie Ale--didn't love the base, but did love the saltiness) and were just really pleasant to interact with -Plenty of tables both inside and outside to people watch -- Chocolate Peanut Buttery Swirl Scoop-shop exclusive. Richer chocolate base than other B&J chocolates. I was less jazzed about the PB texture--the PB cookie dough in the Tonight Dough is much more appealing than the small clumps of PB swirl. I'd consider this flavor again if anything ever happens to the Tonight Dough (don't ever do that to me, B&J!) -- Can't consider going back to the claustrophobic Newbury Emack & Bolio's with no seating when this is a short walk away! read more

FREE CONE DAY! Despite a long line of sweet-toothed customers snaking out the door, the employees are friendly and incredibly efficient. I was in and out of there in under 10 minutes with a cone of delicious Coffee, Coffee BuzzBuzzBuzz (coffee ice cream with espresso bean fudge chunks). In all my visits here, from spontaneous drop-ins to purposeful cashing in of birthday coupons, service has been helpful and friendly. I just wish they put descriptions of some of their less self-explanatory flavors so I (and I'm sure plenty of others) don't have to ask all the time. But the employees never seem exasperated and are always willing to provide free tastings. If only today was a bit sunnier while sitting in front of BPL enjoying my cone. YUMMY, rich, creamy, and flavorful ice cream. Definitely sample as many flavors as you want, particularly the odd-sounding ones. I haven't been disappointed yet! The line can move slowly, so that's a little irritating when you're stuck waiting on the staircase. The ice cream is definitely on the pricy end, two smalls came out to ~$11. Ben & Jerry's will forever be a favorite ice cream location of mine. I remember the first time I found out that they sold pints of their ice cream in stores, and I was super excited. My favorite flavors are the Cherry Garcia and the Coconut Seven Layer Bar. I recently tried the chocolate dipped rainbow sprinkle waffle cone, and it added such a fantastic flavor to my ice cream! I always say the more scoops the merrier at this place, and I would say that whatever you order you absolutely cannot go wrong! As a side note, I also love how progressive the company is as a whole and how unapologetically themselves they are. 12/10 would recommend! read more

Is it global warming that's to blame for ice cream, frozen yogurt, smoothies, sorbets, shakes and frozen crushed ice coffee drinks costing so much? Not just at B&Js but everywhere, I mean... a fresh hot coffee costs 30 or 40 cents less than an iced coffee in most places. Ice doesn't cost that much.... does it? Have we really screwed the planet that much? Well maybe we have, or maybe it's just the rent for having such a prime tourist- and shopper-grabbing location because here it's virtually impossible to get anything under 5 DOLLARS. Still, what you do get is good and in large portions. There's great variety and the staff here are wonderful. The decor is a kids dream (and therefore a little too much for me), if a little cramped and dark inside. There's an excellent outdoor seating are to enjoy your treat with a friend whilst you people-watch, and there's some great photos of fatties taking on 'The Vermonster' - a giant tub-of-ice-cream challenge. Now if B&Js could only start serving a smaller portion for 3 dollars or so, I'd come here a lot more often. This is the place to go if you're down on Newbury and want an ice cream or a smoothie and don't feel like walking up to JP Licks further up. Yes, it's expensive, but it's pretty yummy. I've been going recently on lunch breaks to pick up smoothies for me and Jesse, and they are a yummy alternative to an actual lunch and are filled with fruit and goodness. The lemonade/limeades are also killer. If you go for a shake, the oreo shake is really good, and in general, go for the shakes with "stuff" in them.......the plain ones are a little too plain. The reason there are only three stars is that it can take a while....it's not the place to go if you're in a hurry and there's a line. The staff is friendly, and really do work hard to get through the line quickly, but it's still a time suck. read more

I love their ice cream, don't get me wrong, but we realized after we left that we'd both been seriously jipped out of our money. The manager was helping to scoop ice cream as it was not a busy night, and put mine in a larger-size cup so "the toppings wouldn't fall off." This is conveniently located on Newbury St. in Back Bay. This is a pretty typical Ben & Jerry's, be prepared to drop a few bucks on ice cream for sure. They have a good selection of flavors and the staff is attentive and very quick. They have a good amount of tables outside, which is a great spot to enjoy your ice cream on a nice day while looking out onto the beautiful architecture of Newbury. I had an all time favorite of mine, The Tonight Dough, they also have a great selection of sundaes, shakes, and fancy cones. Once he told me all about the franchisee meeting in the Bahamas, so I guess I, too, would be super happy if that was my job, but still... One beef: why why WHY the jump in prices? I was somehow able to justify $4.50 for a small cone: you can get two flavors! rent must be really high! I would pay $1 just for sniffing the ambient air alone (mmm, fresh brownies and waffle cones)! I know you're busy dishing up ice cream for tourists, but the floor is always a mess and the ordering counter is sticky with spilled ice cream. Can I just say that Chocolate Therapy Ice Cream has the effect of a liquid chocolate and Zanax combination but of course still tastes amazing? So many Ben & Jerry's flavors are so good! And many of them also happen to be gluten-free. (Of course, ask to make sure that no scooping cross-contamination has occurred with the glutenated flavors.) Also, here's a gluten-free cake option: Ben & Jerry's makes icecream-on-icecream cakes, and specifically advertises that they can do these gluten-free. Or, you can DIY with their pints and go half-n-half with gluten-free cakey-goodness (I heart Pamela's brand g-free cake and frosting mixes, which can be altered to be dairy-free). (If you're not into dairy, my rec is coconut milk icecream, many brands/flavors of which are gluten-free too, or Turtle Mountain dairy-free frozen desserts, many of which are also g-free--Whole Foods tends to stock 'em.)
