I haven't been to JP McGurkee's in years. This place is popular during the lunchtime so since it gets busy I must remind you that the parking is scarce so plan ahead. Now let's get to the eating. Oh by the way, you can order half a sandwich if you want to. I just happen to order a whole sandwich. In my case I ordered the Italiano. The bread is toasted and the sandwich was tasty. Had spiced ham, Swiss cheese and salami. The place has had a few changes from what I can recall but still looks pretty much the same. It still is has a lot of loyal customers from the area which is a good thing. The service is great and has a customer friendly atmosphere. This bread was so gorgeous it neatly brought me to tears. The perfect crunch on my turkey sandwich. The sub was huge, but it was so good, I gobbled it all up. The Cole slaw was perfectly balanced, slightly sweet and not overly wet. I will definitely be back! On top of that, the ambiance is quaint and lovely. We had our two young kids with us and it was kid friendly, with the staff helping to find the right menu option for them. I don't live nearby so I tried to buy the bread, but they don't sell it. Oh wow, what a charm. This place is the cutest place I've ever seen- it really warmed my heart. And it wasn't just the place! I went in around 6:30pm on a weekday and it was surprisingly empty! I met the owner, Ted, he made my sandwich and he was so sweet. I ordered a full size turkey sandwich with a side of potato salad. I wanted the coleslaw but he said they were sold out- good for him! Hopefully I can get my hands on it next time. The bread the sandwich was on was soooo good also! It was toasted and it didn't make me feel full after eating. You know how carbs can fill you up pretty good- but this bread was light on the tummy and I love that. Ted's service was exceptional and I know for sure I'll go back. This restaurant is generational as he said JP was his grandpa. And you know, this place will make you feel you're walking into your grandparents home! It is so cute. Again, really great local find. 8/17/24 - Short version: there was not anything about this sammy shop that wowed either of us. The best part, IMHO, was the bread: it was a sesame seed toasted bun and it did not take the sandwiches hostages. Meaning there was not an overabundance of bread; it was less bread and more guts. It was not too far of a drive for us but there was nothing about the experience to warrant a return trip. Longer version: the south parking lot is not much of a lot, maybe three or four spaces. The north lot is off the busier street and not where I would want to park my car. There is an outside dining area, but it was dark, looked quite overgrown, and as if it had not been cleaned in a good long while. Not even sure if they allow seating back there - we def did not ask. It has a nice old-feel interior decor. There were two gals behind the counter and only one other customer (it was about 4 o'clock, so early for dinner). The male customer conversed with us, asking if it was our first time there. He then proceeded to tell us how great it was. Meh, not so much. The gal who took our order was polite. One thing we noticed but also failed to ask about was for pizza. Their online menu mentioned pizza but neither of us saw that option on the printed menus. The potato salad side was creamy, the pickle spears were good, and both sandwiches were also. Again, there was nothing about the experience that really stood out to make us feel like a return visit is needed. Been there, done that. read more

McGurkee's has been a neighborhood staple for decades and it is still pretty darn good eats. Are they the still best subs in town? Maybe not anymore. They are very unique though. The meatball and super Sicilian subs are very good hot sandwiches and ooze Italian flavor. The restaurant and people are friendly and professional. The building has great history and ambiance. The sub sandwich market is super competitive and newcomers are making great subs with better ingredients and fresher bread. I would love to see McGurkee's do a menu and supplier refresh to get back on top. read more

During a random search for a meatball sandwich, I found this little hole in the wall. I did not know so much history from a small sub sandwich pizza shop name, McGurkee's. Once you step in, you can smell the sesame being toasted on bread. I personally tried the meatball Italian sandwich. The texture of the bread was crunchy and just right with the taste of sesame seeds. The meatballs were soft inside and nice cooked outside layer with warm battered pizza sauce. The price for the sandwich ran about $10 for a 6 inch. Without planning lunch I got to experience a little bit of Phoenix history and a good tasty meatball Italian sandwich. read more

Another solid Yelp reco for lunch in my new neighborhood. Wasn't looking to drop $$ (which appears to be very possible in Midtown) and get something not-too-heavy... and since many of my fellow Yelp friends have been here (s/o to Taric), I was pointed to McGurkee's! Not even $8 spent on a sandwich, potato salad and a pickle. I've passed by the intersection a few times in years past but never noticed this unassuming small shop. Parking is a little rough BUT McGurkee's doesn't have much seating to begin with so... As Taric and a few others mentioned, they don't have pizza. The menu has shrank to just one side (subs and sandwiches). Every table was full when I walked in so you know having a small menu is A-OK. The cashier/server was super sweet, she recommended the Super Scilian based on what I've ordered at a national sub shop. That sandwich bread is bomb dot com- hours later and I don't feel blah like I would after eating other bread. The pickle and potato salad (chips are also an option) are a nice side.... Not overly mayo-heavy. Can't wait to try another sandwich next time I'm in the 'hood. read more

Some of its vintage vibes are legit with a wood panel icebox behind the counter, and some of it is a bit manufactured with by old newspaper clippings that are hung on the walls. It appears to have been refurbished at some point recently. Food: A solid selection of subs, mostly favoring the Italian sliced/spiced meats category. Bread was out of this world good! Beverage section was somewhat lacking. Would like to see some more vintage or craft soda options like cream, soda, IBC, etc.. Price: definitely on the higher side, but to be expected in a unique spot like this. Overall: a great little vintage sandwich shop. Nice to throw this into your rotation every once in a while. Sure beat Subway and love patronizing local small businesses. read more

What a crazy spot. It feels like going back in time when you walk through the door. A tight, lived-in sandwich shop serving excellent food. Nothing special, but does a sandwich need to be special? The staff was wonderful during my single visit, recommending sandwiches and even offering a discount. I spent a few minutes eyeing the vintage wall hangings and enjoying the space after ordering. I ordered on Grubhub and drove 20 minutes across town. Apparently pizzas are not available until 2pm but the app let me order at 12. The girl at the front was very nice but said "yes I saw your order, we haven't made the sandwich yet but it will just take 5 minutes, unfortunately we don't have the pizza yet". She was nice but other restaurants in the past either cancel the order or have Grubhub call to say "do you still want this order if we can't fulfill the whole thing"? If they did, we would've cancelled the whole order and not driven all the way there. The owner should update their times so this doesn't happen to other customers. read more

I work nearby and come atleast once a week. My best friend's grandma used to take her here all the time when she was a kid so I had hears about it before and was excited to be nearby! Everyone inside is so kind. I believe it's family owned but if not they act like one!! I always get the turkey sub without mustard and barely toasted and it is so amazing every time. Cappocollo, two different Hams, Salami and tons of melty cheese. They bake these subs so they are hot and toasty when they get to your table. I especially like the sesame seed hoagie roll. It's soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside. McGurkee's doesn't skimp on the peppers either, there are plenty for each bite. Terrible. I work close by and I have driven past this restaurant for 13 years and I've never stopped. I wish I hadn't. Small parking lot with small spaces. No one to greet you when you arrive so I had no clue what to do so I walked to the back of the restaurant after standing awkwardly by the door. Cafeteria-style service - you order and pay, get your own drink, then choose your own seat. I ordered the Patras pasta with a side salad and a beer on the menu. I was told they didn't have the beer I ordered or blue cheese dressing. I asked for a Moretti beer (received) and a water glass I didn't receive. I went back to the counter to get a water glass but never could drink from it because it had lipstick on the outside and food stick to the inside . Salad was plain - iceberg lettuce, 2 slices of cucumber, 2 slices of tomato. The pasta was awful. I'm a terrible cook and I could have prepared it. Overcooked penne, a few sliced mushrooms, and tons of what tasted like store bought sauce. I wouldn't serve it to company - never mind serve it in a restaurant! If you are tempted to stop here, I'd pass. read more

Ordered the deluxe Italian sub...so this took me back to my childhood my mom would pick up these toasted Italian subs which had side of dressing that you poured over the sub & those tangy pepperoncinis...amazing, amazing...cute back patio & inside restaurant adorable & eclectic....weather amazing back patio is small but quaint... my only negative was ice tea tasted stale which maybe the tea machine needs a good cleaning otherwise the sub was so good I just had to do the 5 stars read more
