Breakfast took over an hour- service was horrible. We waited for over 10 minutes for just coffee and water. The waitress we did have kept asking the kids to "save her some food" because "she was hungry"... super weird. Food was average at best. They charged for extra things that weren't clearly defined in the menu. They were also out of numerous things. Find a different place for breakfast! read more

My goodness! Where to start! My husband and I went in on a whim for a late lunch and we're so happy to find this hidden gem of a restaurant. We both had the Eggs Benedict, one classic with ham and the other the Florentine. Absolutely delicious, I highly recommend both of these! I want to see if toasting the English muffin would make it hold its firmness longer? After trying to go to a diner across town, we found this place. Thank God because it was awesome. Had the chicken Philly and I highly recommend it. The fries had a unique seasoning that was perfect. Food here is absolutely amazing! So far I and my family have tried 5 dishes from their very many options. Flavorful, unique and different from all of the other breakfast options. I see some reviews commenting on either slow service or undercooked food but I have to assume the food critics are very picky or like their food cooked till it's firm, plain and rubbery like places such as Denny's. As far as service goes we have been here several times and the service was fast, courteous and very on par with some of your best restaurants. I give this place a 10 out of 10 when it comes to unique food, service and prices. All I can say is try it and you will be back time and time again. read more

This is the 4th time I have been to this restaurant and have been disappointed with each visit. This last visit will be my last. The food is just so so but the service is horrendous. Service was so slow and the server only had 2 tables. She took our order and brought us coffee and I like cream and sugar in my coffee. Did not see her again until our food came. I had to ask for silverware. By then my coffee was cold. I don't know what kinds of grits they use but they were yellow and tasted horrible. I grew up on grits and never had any that tasted so bad. She only came back much later to give us our bill we had been done eating for about 10 minutes. Never came to ask how everything was and when she gave us the bill never took our plates away. If she had she would have noticed I didn't eat but 2 bites. The muffin my husband got was heated in the microwave and was like rubber. Won't ever be back. read more

Wanted to try this diner as close to home and was looking forward to hot food. Major disappointment! We asked if the soup was made from scratch and were told it was. When it arrived at the table it was mostly celery. The chicken had hard gristle and the soup was Cold! After picking out the celery the lovely waitress asked how the food was and we told her. She immediately got the manager who came out and was sympathetic. Turns out she is an owner). The soup is not made from scratch...it is a dry soup base that already has freeze dried celery, onions and carrots in it... calling this made from scratch is like dumping a ring o noodle soup envelope into a hot cup of water and calling it homemade. The hamburger and fries arrived (again Cold) and while I asked for ketchup and mustard, there was mayo on the bun. Instead of making a new one, they peeled the bread off and put a plain bottom bread on and brought me bottles of ketchup and mustard. The burger was flat and chopped up so that the meat fell out of the bread in small pieces...and I reiterate, it was Cold! Also the tomato on top looked like and end piece that should have ended up in compost, not on top of the burger. Lack of care and attention to what is being served. The manager (owner) was sympathetic and offered to heat up the soup (probably in a microwave) but my partner said no as they had not eaten any just sipped a small spoon of broth which tasted only of celery. She asked me if I wanted a new burger made and I said no as I had eaten half (hungry) and I was done. The cold fries were not at all appetizing either. We did mention the only thing that was hot was the tea (which we were grateful for as the whole inside of the place was very cold....all the patrons were wearing coats!). She told us she would comp us the soup and burger and we told her we would pay for the half burger I ate and the teas and she went to go call her supervisor. She came back and told us that she had removed the burger but we would need to pay the soup. My partner said there was no way that was going to happen as none was eaten, it was cold and mostly celery with chicken gristle. The manager (owner) told us she would need to speak with the supervisor again and that is when we found out that he was actually there...the supervisor is her husband and the other owner. He seemed very angry and instead of listening to what was not good he insisted that we pay the soup and my partner told him absolutely not. We would pay the tea only at which point he said then don't pay anything at all. The diner is in an unexpected location, right around a grocery store! But it is very clean and cool inside! There is also an area outside that is shaded. The servers were super friendly and made sure to make a connection with us! We were quickly seated and the food came out very quickly after we ordered. We came around noon, it was a bit busy, but you wouldn't have even noticed because you were taken care of very quickly! The food was amazing, it was hot and fresh! The fries are easily addicting... the waffles were perfectly sweet. The burgers were juicy and the burger bun was very delicious. If you are around Hagerstown, this is a must! They have plenty of options, especially sweet treats! You will not be disappointed!:) read more

New diner in hagerstown! Not too difficult to get to from the highway and the diner is a mom&pop shop not affiliated with any large franchises. The food tastes phenomenal & the portions are rather large so come hungry! There are healthy options and regular diner food options but made with quality. Went for breakfast on a random Tuesday morning, while waiting for my car service to be done. They were not too busy and the service was great. The Cali benedict was phenomenal! After visiting family in the Hagerstown area I read the terrific reviews on line for J's and was definitely going to try it with my husband , and son , DiL and baby grandson . My son and I arrived and stood at the checkin counter for about 7 minutes and finally a woman told us to give her a few minutes to set up the table with baby chair. We stood outside and when we walked back in and she started to seat us a gentleman with a headset said no there is a Wait List . Meanwhile we have been here for 15 minutes already . I understand she probably didn't know about the waitlist but when we told him what had transpired he flippantly said there was nothing he could do. No sorry , give us a few minutes .... Nothing. It's 30 minutes. So, I've been a few times for breakfast now. Service has been spot on. The offerings are what you'd expect from a diner, with just a bit of added flair. Nothing too crazy, but different enough to set them apart from everything else in the city. For some reason we always each get a breakfast entree, then actually end up ordering something else we "just had to try" for the table. I have gone to J's at least five or six times. The food hasn't disappointed yet! However, the last two visits (two days in a row two weekend ago) the servers were severely lacking. Our first server seemed to be bothered we were there as it took her 10 minutes to come to our table and another 10 to bring water. From our vantage point she could be seen just chatting with the owner/boss behind the counter while we waited. Went again the next day and amazed at how attentive the server was. I made the mistake of thanking her right off the at for being better than the server the day before. After that it took several requests to get things. One meal of our party of four wasn't put in, wasn't realized immediately & not brought out until the other three were almost finished with their meals. And there was NEVER an offer to give a percentage off that meal or maybe not charge for the coffee. Something. Disappointing. read more

Went to grab some breakfast this morning after seeing they had lots of vegan options available. It was a busy morning at J's, lots of takes outs and others dining it, so our food did take awhile but it was well worth it. I got the vegan steak burrito, which was a huge portion and so good.
