This year in Arizona was the hottest month of July on record. My air-conditioned was blowing out hot air. I called J Scott Refrigeration and the next day Rick and Eric were at my house and they replaced my blower in my unit and I had air again in less than 3 hours. They worked quickly and efficiently and best of all I was not over charged. They gave a very fair price. I checked around and I paid at least $500 less than what others would have charged me. Seemed friendly, been calling him for evap. cooler service for a few years. This year have had issues. The sump pump stopped working and called him to replace it and scheduled an appointment. Waited around all that scheduled day, even tried calling a few times, but no answer and no one ever showed up. Finally I got him on tbe phone the next day and he claimed there is a shortage and no pumps available, which does not explain why he never called to reschedule the appointment, and he never apologized for wasting my whole day waiting on the appointment we had. He said he would let me know when the part became available. A few weeks later the water pump went out, I called and scheduled an appointment to replace it, and I asked the lady on the phone about the sump pump. I asked if I could just buy the part and have them install it, she said they would let me know when the part became available and she just blew me off. When the tech Eric showed up the next day for the water pump replacement, he magically had a sump pump to install! And after checking the unit he "informed" me that the water pump was not working, yes, I said that was why I called you and scheduled this appointment. He then had to go to Home Depot and get a new water pump. Now I find that I was charged $350 for the sump pump which I find online for $86.75. But I only discovered this after requesting them to email me a receipt for the work several times. They no longer provide written receipts, only an emailed pdf file, but I always have to call them several times requesting the reciept before they actually send it. I called them asking about the $350 charge for an $86 dollar part. I guess he did not like being questioned because he got very angry. He claimed first that the charge was because he did other work cleaning the unit etc but that work had been done months before, I always get that done before the hot season begins. Then he claimed that the part did cost $350, despite it being listed today at $86.75. Then he says well he is in business and that is expected, uh yes 2x the price, maybe 2.5x the price not quadruple the price! Then he wanted me to believe that because of the shortage it was $350 at that time. I expected them to say the charge was a mistake, or apologize or something. Instead he started yelling at me and talking over me not letting me even complete a sentence, he even asked me if I was on drugs! Bottom line, I was charged $350 for a part that costs around $85. The water pump retails at about the same price as the sump pump and he charged only $150 for replacing the water pump. Then I recalled how earlier this year, when he was out here doing the clean up and prep for the hot season, he handed me his phone to sign a supposed receipt, he never did this before and not since then, but when I handed him the phone back he looked at it and asked, did I mean to leave him a $200 tip? No I said. Then he said oh, well he could not refund it but he will take it off on subsequent appointments, which he did, once, which might have accounted for maybe half that amount. But I still did not get $200 worth of relief. Then I guess that marked me as a target or something because that is when this the excessive overcharge happened. Bottom line, don't take his word on anything. He may do some good work, but he may also rip you off if you do not pay attention or if you do not know the relative price of any replacement parts. He may also scheduled an appointment and decide not to keep it and never inform you, wasting your whole day and never apologizing for that. I also wonder how much actual clean up he did on the cooler on the pre season msintenence, as he did not bring down a bucket of scaling, I never heard any vacuuming or anything and he was up there for a very short pierod of time. If possible, you might want to actually watch him doing his work as he may not be doing all he claims he has done, this I am only suspicious of, I can not conform as I never went on the roof to check his work. read more

I scheduled J. Scott Refrigeration to service my central air conditioning unit and evaporative cooler on May 9, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. The technician arrived on time. He opened the air conditioning unit and cleaned out some debris from the return air vent. He said the coils were dirty and needed to be cleaned but he didn't have the equipment to do it. I offered to let him use my air compressor or brush. He chose to use the brush but stopped cleaning after a few seconds. Without checking with gauges, he said the air conditioning unit needed some Freon and proceeded to connect his tank of coolant to the unit. After a very short time, still without using gauges, he said that the unit was fully charged and, without weighing the tank before or after adding the coolant, he said that he had added three pounds of coolant. I asked him if he was going to check for leaks and he said, "No." Please note that air conditioning units do not "use up" Freon; if the coolant is low it is because it has leaked out. The technician said that the condenser fan was unbalanced and might need to be replaced; I should have someone take a look at it. He then proceeded to "service" the evaporative cooler. He asked me what was wrong with it and I told him one of the pumps was not working. He said that the pump was bad even though it was brand new and that it would be cheaper for me to replace it than for him to do it. I agreed. He did not check the electrical system, cooler pads, blower motor, squirrel cage fan, or drive belt. If he had checked the belt, he would have noticed that it was badly frayed and cracked; it failed a few days later. He did not oil the bearings or bushings on the motor or fan. When I replaced the drive belt, one of the fan bushings was bad but he did not know this since he never checked them.. He did not turn on the water supply or check the float operation. There were some areas on the duct work that the technician said needed to be taped but he did not have enough tape. I supplied the tape. Although I told the technician that I wanted him to service the air conditioning unit and evaporative cooler because I was getting too old to climb on the roof, I ended up making more trips up and down the ladder than he did in order to get him my tools and supplies for him to use. When he was finished, the technician threw his tank of Freon from the roof to the lawn below. The technician then said that the Freon was very expensive and that my costs were $120. The preceding report is factual. Subjectively: His methods of workmanship are unacceptable by any commonly accepted standards. He did not have the necessary tools or supplies. He did not do the work requested. The neglect of using gauges or scales while recharging the air conditioning unit is both dangerous and unprofessional. The fact that he did not check out most of the items on the evaporative cooler seems to indicate that he was more interested in showing up and collecting his fee rather than actually doing his work. This is not a company that I would ever consider allowing back on my property. read more

We called around and J Scott was the best price so we went with it hoping it would turn out okay. We are on a budget and were worried because we know how much air fixes cost. We are so happy right now... Richard was the maintenance man who came over. He showed up earlier instead of at the last hour like most. He was very friendly and personal. Just his personality alone made us trust him. He was finished in 45 mins and the price was 1/2 what everyone else was. He said he likes to build a business that customers will come back to, he has 2 customers and I will refer him to anyone that has an A/C problem. read more
