I've read the reviews and figured I call to find out if they can come over and give me a estimate. Spoke to someone and they told me that it will cost $175 before getting to my house and and it can goup when they get there to see what they need to do at the site. I had a drain pipe collapse in the front of the house. I called and they were out pretty much immediately. The water in my basement immediately drained when they opened up the collapse. For the duration of the job which was extensive , I was walked through the processes, and Care was given to make sure that in the meantime my basement did not flood again. You can spend your thousands of dollars on cameras and high-tech evaluations, but I prefer the wisdom of someone that has had his hands on experience for so many years. I lke their motto: "Help! Our buiseness is going down the drain" They use underwater sewer camera to help them in their dirty but very appreciated job. This is a job most people would not want to do. But don't feel sorry for them, these guys make a very good living and provide a much needed service. They are experts at opening up drains; toilets, sinks , tubs and sewers. Attitude is ridiculous!!!! two guys unloading something from a truck. Guy 1 loses his balance and falls, then starts cussing guy 2 out so loud everyone in the neighborhood came out to look. He used every disgusting word he could think of and yelled for 5 minutes at guy #2 who just stood there embarrassed. We have children in our neighborhood and that kind of language is ridiculous!!! We are big procrastinators, so naturally, we waited at least two months to get this done. He came out on a day's notice to finally fix our sump pump. Anyways, quick job...like 20/30 minutes. He cut the pipe and rotated it and reattached it. He charged the $125 he promised before. Those of you reading this...don't hold him to that price! Great, the cheapest quote we got, and the guy sticks true to his word. We asked how much would it be about, on the phone, and he kept to that price, so they came in the morning after, and finished the job no problem. Later he explained to me what exactly I needed to do for the future and how frequently I'd have to get my sewer basin cleaned. Right after my husband and I bought our first home last year, we started having major plumbing issues. We brought in no less than five different plumbers and spent hundreds of dollars, but no one could fix the problem or give us any straight answers. Finally, we found J. Stewart on Yelp and gave them a call. It was obvious right away that these guys were decent and honest. They didn't try to get us to pay for work that didn't need to be done, and they charged a fair price for their services. When the big repair day came, they ran into many more problems than they expected, but they stuck around for nine hours straight and weren't satisfied until the job was done right. Joe was great -- he went well beyond the call of duty and solved two plumbing problems we had. First, when I described a problem with a toilet leak, he tried to tell me over the phone how I could fix it myself without spending money on a plumber (which would cost him business, but would save me money). I wasn't able to do what he suggested, so he came out and charged a little less than what he said he would (b/c he found a less-expensive part that he said would do a better job than the part I'd had). Next, he addressed a sink stopper that wouldn't stay down; he worked on it for awhile and made it somewhat better but couldn't completely fix it, so he barely charged me for that b/c he said he wasn't satisfied with his work. Later that afternoon, he called me and said he and his associate had gone to a parts store across town and found a part that would fix the sink; they came back, fixed it, and charged me less than what Joe had originally said it would cost. All told, I found J Stewart to be a good, dedicated plumber, as well as a friendly man with a good sense of humor. I will use him again and recommend him to friends. Thanks, Joe! read more

These guys are flat out thieves. Came by to replace a sump pump, but it turns out there was just a valve problem. After replacing the valve he raised his price to $450 for a simple valve. And also required me to go to the ATM to pay at least $300 in cash or it was going to cost even more. I was so put out by it that I had another plumber come by to look at what they did. They told me that the J. Stewart did was $100 job, and that these guys are known for the bait and switch. J Stewart...or at least the guy who claims that he is John Stewart...until he tells you his name is Bill then the day later tells you his name is John, and then a day later he tells you his name is Bill...is about 400 lbs. He doesn't get out of the company truck but instead sends some guy into the house who just kinda mumbles. There is also a rookie on the team that seems like a nice guy but doesn't really know anything about plumbing I have the receipt and would be happy to show this to you and testify for you if you ever plan to sue these jerks. Stewart Plumbing has been to my house about 5 times in the last two years after basement floodings. They rodded out the line, came back a year later, rodded out the line and then in the space of 3 months have been here 3 x with their "camera" which is old, black and white and shows just about nothing. I constantly asked them what is the problem. They came up with answers like "buy a power flush toilet, your line may be pitched....never the simple answer that your line is filled with tree roots which is what I saw when I had "normal" plumbers come by with a color camera that showed everything and they came up with the solution which is to put a clean out in the front yard. Stewart said I had tree roots, not from the camera but from the rodder the first time I used them. They said their camera showed a elbow was off set. So for $600 dollars they dug up the basement floor and replaced an elbow that was perfectly fine, with no leakage as the sand around the elbow was dry. My contractor working on the house said I was ripped off. Stewart then said If I have any more backups in the next year he would do it for free. He was that confident that the elbow was the problem. 2 weeks later the basement is flooded and Stewart comes out and rods the line but asks to be paid because he says he found "tampons" on the end of the rodder and he "doesn't do tampons". No mention of tree roots. So I told him that he said he would do it for free and Stewart says "OK, but don't ever call me again" and hangs up on me. Additionally he was heard over a cell phone telling his worker "tell him (me) to go "f@k himself when I asked why he found no wet sand around the elbow he fixed. Stewart is bad news. read more

These guys are GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They quoted me a price for rebuilding my catch basin of $650 over the phone which was at least $800 less than anyone else. They came that day to give me a firm estimate, which was the same. Arrived 2 days latter. The basin was full of sewage, and they had to rod the system first (included in the price.) They were unable to get the line clear. The suggested hydro power flushing for $250. That did not work. For an additional $1400 they put clean-out on my front lawn, and credited me the $250 for the power flushing. The clean-out made it clear that the sewer was collapsed outside of my property line. They set up the city inspection at no extra charge and provided the necessary work for the city to take over and replace 6 feet of sewer under the street. Three of them worked on this project for FIVE FULL DAYS from 10:00am to 6:30pm. The total cost was $2050. I am convinced that they saved me at least $2000. (The city sewer inspector said that most homeowners were usually out over $5000 before the city got called in.) These guys are the princes of the sewers, and joked that they were born in a catch basin. I would call them again without hesitation if I needed sewer work done again. read more

They were able get to my place within the hour and fixed my plumbing woes at HALF the price of Roto Rooter's "estimate." After 4 different quotes, John was the ONLY guy who made an accurate assessment of my problem (a broken sewer line that was backing up into my basement), but also 1/3 the price of the other comparable bid. My landlord set up an appointment with J Stewart Sewerage to run the lines in our building because the entire unit had a foul smell coming from the pipes. The plumber never called me to confirm what time he would be here, and when he did arrive, he walked into my house while smoking a cigarette. I am allergic to smoke so this was a huge problem for me. Even if I weren't allergic, though, this just seems extremely rude to me to walk into a paying customer's home with a lit cigarette. When I asked him to put it out, he scoffed and walked outside. He and his coworker were here for about 45 minutes, and I have no idea what was completed. He told me to look at the receipt, which I did, but I told him it didn't make sense to me. It was just notes, not complete sentences explaining what was completed or what needs to be done next. I just asked him to please explain what was done to the landlord because I knew I wouldn't be able to do so. Also, there was no explanation or pricing breakdown on the bill, just a receipt with $175 at the bottom. If given the choice, I will not use this company again due to their lack of professionalism. read more

I was in the final stages of purchasing a house in Oak Park and the sellers wouldn't allow us to do a lateral inspection. John said he wouldn't buy a house without checking out the lateral so I insisted and the sellers eventually agreed. John's team inspected the lateral and said it looked great but advised it be rodded next year and a catch basin installed. The price quote for those things was great and the lateral inspection was $300. Well worth the peace of mind! Called J Stewart last week to make appointment for a clog kitchen sink and inspect catch basin. Plumber on line was probably working a job and told me he would call back which he did. Made an appointment for him to inspect plumbing for Friday June 1 between 9 and 12. I got a call from him around 12 stating he was running late and I told him we can reschedule appointment if it makes it better for him and made another appointment for Wednesday between 9 and 12. Plumber never came and did not have the common decency of calling me to let me know whether there were any issue with appointment. I would not hire this jerk even to clean my toilet. read more
