Wow - I love the vibe of this place. Fresh, fun and professional. The staff is top-notch -knowledgeable and personable. The menu is extensive and varied. I had to try their enchiladas with eggs. A great size portion. Fresh, cheesy and messy - loved it! My friends were very pleased with their salads and sandwiches. Even though we weren't doing adult beverages on this trip, I was impressed with their wine, beer and beverage options. This is definitely on my list of "go-to" places in Austin. Found this place on my way home from Fredericksburg through Yelp. It was pretty busy so I felt I made a good decision. I ordered chorizo stuffed pork medallions. It was different but good. I also tried the red fries with aioli truffle. Everything as far as presentation, serving size, and taste were pleasing, only set back was our food was almost room temperature. If you google "profoundly mediocre" you'll find Jack Allen's. The rough mixed guacamole with hand cut corn chips were very good but my appetizer of seafood ravioli in a seafood sauce was the definition of bland and the ravioli were way undercooked and another appetizer of crab meat mix with jalapeños was just bad. Without the peppers there would have been no taste at all. How can you screw up crabmeat??? Other rides at the table included BBQ tortillas that were ok but included a corn soup our friend had two spoonfuls of before stopping. A lot was carried home but will probably sit in the fridge. Dont waste your time, money or tastebuds. While driving there we passed we passed a McDonalds and I joked "We could save some money", would have gotten an equivalent meal. read more

I love eating here at Jack Allen's for lunch with the ladies when I am visiting Austin. The Oak Hill location has great parking and a nice view overlooking a wooded creek area on the back patio. Some of my favorites are the buttermilk fried chicken salad and tejana enchiladas. A lot of times we like to start with the jalapeno crab dip.... It is unique and an interesting culinary flair. Jack Allen's chicken fried beef rib is good. Really, really good. Fabulously good. Oh yes. Last-meal worthy. You-can-take-everything-but-leave-me-the-rib-divorce worthy. Take-my-firstborn-worthy. Okay, not really but this dish is so friggin' delicious that these thoughts actually did run through my mind. My husband and I both fought over the beef rib. In a nice, polite way since we were out in public. Sharp utensils flashed here and there as we took turns "sharing". Each even managed a "do you want the last piece", even though I did not mean it at all. Between us, we licked the plate clean, then agreed to come back and order our very own beef rib entrees next time. We all but left the hamburger untouched. Poor thing. I felt almost sorry for it. Best place to eat in Austin, hands down. Excellent food and service consistently (we've also been to the 360 location). Food is so fresh and tasty. I also had a great drink- Tito's Sage & Grapefruit Splash. It was very busy, but everything came out in a very reasonable amount of time. Every table gets a free sample of the pimento cheese with crackers which is delicious, we order the full size order. Every time we visit Austin, this place is a must. Loved Loved Jack Allen's Kitchen. Upon arrival we placed our name on the list for seating. The wait was initially 30 minutes, but in actuality it was about 15-20 minutes. The customer service was absolutely excellent. They are following CDC guidelines when it comes to social distancing, masks, sanitizing and capacity numbers. I sat in the patio bar area. It was a warm and cozy atmosphere. It was a bit chilly outside (middle of January), but the heaters and fireplace were on so it was a perfect temperature on the patio. The food was so fresh, delightful and delicious. The catfish was very tasty and very well seasoned. The crap dip was so full of flavor with a some bite from the jalapeños. Farm to table fresh! There were vast portions of food served. You are definitely not leaving JA's hungry. They were kind enough to even bring my husband a birthday treat which made him fell special. I highly recommend Jack Allen's. This is a place that I will definitely return to. Thank you for staying open and figuring out how to keep customers safe during such unusual circumstances. At my place, Jack Allen's is always on the 'most desired' list for weekend brunch! Super place, but also... pricey. But it's worth it. The Sunday brunch buffet is awesome. So many different kinds of food arrayed in an appealing way. It's the stuff dreams are made of. I'd characterize it as traditional American comfort food done better than homemade. They make a lot of 'home' style food like deviled eggs, zucchini bread and bean salad which you don't often see at restaurants because they're so humble, but so delicious. Even for a vegetarian there's a good selection. If you are in the mood for carbs, Jack Allen's has it. Their pastries, muffins, breads and pancakes are some of the naughtiest and some of the best. Definitely recommend this restaurant. It is one of our favorite restaurants in Austin. The ingredients are fresh and sourced from local farms. The dishes are of good proportion and the prices are reasonable. I don't recommend the steak though (probably better to go to a steak house if you are in the mood for steaks). We actually went here for my birthday celebration so we went for the full experience with appetizer, dinner, and dessert. While they had multiple different options on the Starters list that appealed to us, we thought we would go with something that sounded fresh and light for the summer. The Smashed Guacamole was our choice! The first one that came out did have an issue but they made us a new batch which was much better. I'm not a fan of Cotija cheese, so I'm always good without it but the pumpkin seeds added a good bit of texture to the guacamole. And following that theme, I selected the Pumpkin Seed Pesto-Marinated Chicken Breast for my dinner and my husband went with the Chicken Fried New York Strip. My chicken dish honestly sounded better than it tasted; overall, it was lacking flavor. My husband really enjoyed his dish, especially the Strip steak. I was going to order dessert anyway, but it was complimentary since it was my birthday. The chocolatey dessert that we selected was amazing! It was chocolate mousse covered in chocolate ganache with a white chocolate and strawberry sauce with a brittle. Amazing! I was practically licking the plate clean. Overall, this dining experience had its ups and downs. I'm happy that it ended on a high note. If you're looking for a big, filling meal at a fair price, this would be one for the list. read more

The Bloody Mary's are tiny and missing all the accoutrements expected on a brunch selection (celery, olives,etc), but good flavor. The Barbacoa Eggs Benedict was huge disappointment. Two in our party ordered the same and both came out with hard boiled eggs not poached. After returning, both came back with properly poached eggs. We never could determine what the barbacoa was on top of - it was not bread or tortillas. Whatever it was, it added nothing to the dish. The spiced hollandaise sauce was watery and lacked the richness of traditional hollandaise. The server told us she couldn't serve a margarita larger than 3 ounces (same tiny glass as my Bloody Mary). We didn't understand so bar manager came out. He said the TAC would not allow a larger size glass because there is so much alcohol in their margaritas. Oh well, no margaritas and no more visits to JA's. Huge disappointment. read more

Ordered Daily Special "Rojo's Red Chili Frito Pie" and Tom Town Salad with delicious sesame ginger dressing. The pie came with seared duck egg on top. The inside contained "Ranger Cattle" Wagyu beef, Ancho chili, guajillo & ghost pepper sauce. The taste was a bit on the salty side, and not much heat from the ghost pepper.
