Stopped in today for lunch and had the Philly burger with hash-browns and coffee. The Philly burger is 1/2 lb of lean meat with grilled onions, mushrooms, and green peppers on a toasted yellow kaiser bun. I had them add some Swiss cheese, and mayo. It was perfect. I could only eat half of it. I love this little diner, especially for breakfast. They have the best pancakes and omelets. This place is owned by Geno Garcia, whose father Papi Geno came over from Peru to before he was born to give his family a better life. Papi was there, he is a jolly man in his late 60's, he was fixing the front of the store where a truck ran into it on Tuesday. Papi is a very good cook, and taught his family how to cook. I respect that. The food is delicious. Now one may not care for the hole in the wall type diner, but the food is good. The place is always busy, cause you can get breakfast all day, and who doesn't like breakfast? So I thumbs up. read more

My husband and I love going to Jack and Benny's for breakfast. Family owned and operated, very friendly and attentive staff. We try to beat the crowd, it's so popular on weekends, and the wait is out the door, my stomach can't handle waiting. Our favorite dish is the vegetable breakfast burrito. You can have fresh avocado added to it, deeelish. They have a ton of different pancakes, like coconut, banana, chocolate chip.. etc...The coffee isn't great, but it's ok, as good as most breakfast places. Came down here for breakfast this morning and was pleasantly surprised. I was half-way expecting a dump or something but it's a really nice restaurant serving really good food. After hearing wonderful reviews my boyfriend and I decided to check out Jack and Benny's restaurant. We were desperate to find a great mom and pop diner but were very disappointed. After waiting for a seat they finally placed us at the bar, but the seats were so low to the counter we had trouble eating comfortably and we are not short people (5'6'' and 6'2''). Food was served quickly but was very disappointing. My breakfast sandwich was something I could easily make better at home. My boyfriend's Denver omelette was paper thin and made with frozen, tasteless sausage. If the food was fabulous I would have dismissed the poor seating and the filthy decor, but this place is not worth your time or your money. read more

The food was good but the owner and chef ridiculed and swore at the waitress in front of customers. He did this in both English and Spanish. I own a business and I respect my employees and I expect my employees to respect me. Without hardworking employees, no business would be successful. I will report this to the better business bureau. There always seem to be a line outside so sucks for winter time because you have to wait outside. The parking is so annoying because it's off the streets. The food is super greasy. My meal wasn't that memorable so...come here if you want to cure a hangover. read more

Jack and Benny's is one of the few breakfast spots I've been to at their opening hour. My father, an early riser, likes to get out and about, and seated while there's no wait. I don't typically have much of an appetite at 7AM, but after a bit of travel time in that cold Ohio air, it's not too much trouble to find some room for a cozy, no-nonsense breakfast. Maybe it's the odd hours we dined, the missed and far-off company, the little rapport Dad had with the owners (whom he taught in an ESL class!) but Jack and Benny's remains some of the best breakfast I've ever consumed. Close quarters means that coffee refills are basically constant, so even if you consume some monstrous pile of chorizo scramble or a 20 inch breakfast burrito, you'll still leave so caffeinated that your teeth are rattling and you're nearly euphoric. read more

I went to Jack and Benny's a couple times when I first moved here this past winter. It's definitely a place where you have to keep your expectations very low. The food never comes out at the same time. So I'm finishing my sandwich just as my friend gets her eggs. Meanwhile her 4 year old daughter starts to feel seriously shafted about the missing pancake situation. The last time I went everyone was freezing because all of the people crowding around the door kept holding it open. It sucked, now that I think of it. But again, keep your expectations low. I go here all the time but usually notice my bill is exceptionally higher than what I ordered. Today I made sure to keep track of what I ordered and calculated and sure enough my total was $5 more than what I was supposed to be charged. The waiter always hands me my bill folded in half with the total written on it. When I open the bill it is illegible handwriting with no prices. I go to another table to check the menu and the prices to confirm I was not being irrational. The food is okay. The prices are great but your total is likely to be higher for no reason. I will not be paying anymore visits here. Wish there was a way to make this right. read more

I absolutely love Jack & Benny's for it's fresh food (if you ever have the opportunity to have peach pancakes when they're in season, do NOT miss it), family-owned, authentic yummy hole in the wall. Yes, there is limited parking and there is almost always a wait but when I have been there, I always get AMAZING food and good service and have a fantastic time. It is cheap, much more fresh and homemade than any chain you will go to and always worth it :-) If you go to Columbus, don't miss out on Jack and Benny's! Been here twice, that was two times too many. First time I had a greek omelet that was bland and the spinach was sub par at best. The next time I had apple pancakes that were damn near inedible. They had no flavor to them. The coffee, service, and atmosphere are standard diner, which I what I expected. Came here sunday around 12 or so, which is a no no as the college kids are waking up and want to eat some hang over food. We waited around 30 mins and there were approximately 8 tables of 2 ahead of us... so not bad I'd say. Pretty good turn over. Definitely a greasy spoon but there is definitely a hodge podge of good and not so good elements of the food. The toast is pretty boring (but let's be honest, what toast is really that good), the sausage gravy tastes like it came out of a packet, and the turkey sausage was not that great. However, I really liked the eggs (surprisingly fluffy) and the potato pancake (likely a frozen deep fried item?) but I don't want to judge, so I'll say that it was excellent, since it was. The waitress was a bit flustered that day and you could tell. We sat in the additional area that includes waiting people, so I helped my table to coffee (btw, coffee is free and available while you wait) since she seemed to forget about us in the corner. not the best service, but again, maybe she was just off her game that morning. read more

The food is always good, but with the waiting room in construction waiting outside in the hot sun is no fun and with the current lack of staff there is a long wait for both a seat and to get your food. It did take a while so we had to get our food to go after sitting down but it didn't didsapoint. This was a typical Breakfast diner. I was expecting to be blown away by the food but it was average. I had the Jack Buster, which is a combination of eggs, hashbrowns, cheese, bacon, and ham all layered with gravy on top. It was good but a little bland, I wish it had a sausage pattie on top of it, might as well at this rate, they should also put it all on top of a pancake. My brother in law took a few of us to have lunch here. I really don't see what the big fuss is all about. The place looks like it has never been remodeled, the server didn't seem to be too happy serving us, even though we were the only ones there, the booths can accomodate only 4 people and our 5th person had to sit in a chair. I ordered a veggie omelet and it came with toast. There is absolutely nothing that stood out - food, service, or otherwise. It seems to be like any other whole-in-the-wall breakfast college places. This was the second time I went to the restaurant, and just like the first, the food was delicious. However, the service was atrocious. The waiter, who's name I never caught, because he never introduced himself, was a short blond 20 something... 1) Once again, he did not introduce himself. 2) He was terse throughout our entire encounter. 3) He would take plates without asking, when it was not obvious we wanted them cleared. 4) The waiter was unable to split the check due to a change in policy (more below on that). I asked to speak to the manager, because last time I came there this was not the case. The wait came to the table abruptly, pointed out the policy stated on the menu with his finger, said nothing, and walked away. 5) My friend wanted a coffee refill, the waiter asked in the middle of eating if he wanted it "to go". 6) He brought the check before we asked. 7) He told us they were busy so as soon as we finished our plates we had to go, but we could sit in their "lobby" if we wanted to continue to drink coffee. By the time we left the place was no longer THAT busy for Brunch. The billing policy change was not the waiter's fault, but since the customers are now only allowed one check per table. I find this bizarre in 2017. Most people no longer carry significant amounts of cash, and most people split bills when they go out in a large group. So instead of providing their customers with more options, which will encourage them to come in larger parties, they do the opposite. There is no reason for this. I dine out a lot the Columbus Metro area, and after 4 years of living here, I have never had such an experience. This is unacceptable to me, and they will not be getting any more of my money. **If the owner or anyone that works and cares about the restaurant reads this, then I was there at 10:30AM SU 5/21/2017. Hopefully you can identify this staff member and provide further training or better yet, fire him. I think at his age, regardless of training, he should have some idea of how one should treat customers. He's either a douche or a moron. Going to J and B's is a complete hassle. There is no parking. It is small so you will probably have to wait and you can't go with more than 4 people. They won't split your bill and I believe they only take cash. The food is overrated. Bob Evans is better and you don't have to deal with all of the other issues with eating here. So my advice: Go to Bob Evans. read more

Cluster....:( Food is always good which is why we decided to go there. An they usually serve efficiently. Met some friends for Sunday breakfast before OSU basketball. Expected a crowd and arrived at 11:45 knowing we had until 1:00 before we'd want to head out. We were told 30 - 40 minute wait.."closer to 30." It ended up being an hour and then they would not let us order right away to move things along. Poor attitude displayed by host and wait staff when I asked about status. "We cannot rush people." I get that , of course, but this is THEIR place and not mine. They should know turnover and guide better. We would have gone elsewhere had they been up front with us but we were stuck once we were in queue. There are other options (it's only eggs) so won't make that mistake again. Sorry this neighborhood comfy place left such a sour taste that we won't open ourselves up to again. read more

Rude staff. We got there at 10am and waited for 15 minutes up front before seeing anyone who worked there. There was three other couples before us that were waiting to check in and no one had come up to the front to greet us. Then another couple came in, waited for 5 minutes and decided to seat themselves since no one was there. The waitress came out and started serving the new couple even though there was four couples waiting to be checked in and three couples already on the list that hadn't been helped and were before them. When we notified her of what happened, she got snappy and said they go by the wait list and we have to wait like everyone else then stormed off..... Myself and three other couples STILL not on the wait list. I was done. I left. The place looked dirty and smelt like a bathroom anyways. Can't imagine the food is much better but it's definitely not worth rude service. read more

We don't go out to eat often but Jack and Benny's on High St has been a favorite for a long time...good food, good prices. Our most recent trip last week was disappointing. Mainly due to waitstaff. It was NOT busy. We were largely ignored the entirety of our visit (before ordering, during the meal and after the bill was left) while the wait staff chatted or were on their phones. Waiter kept saying that it would be right up but we just watched those around us, who came in after us, get their food. Then we watched him get on the phone to take the carry out orders. My omelet was peculiarly rectangular, but other than that, Jack & Benny's met my expectations being that it is a hole-in-the-wall diner close to campus. It was filling if not dazzling, and I think they gave me free refills on my milk, so that made me happy. I got sourdough bread toasted on the side, and jam. The prices were reasonable, less than $10 for my meal and drink. Like a lot of other establishments in the University District, you should expect to walk or bus it here since parking appears non-existent. read more

I am torn to write this review, because I took my son there Saturday for breakfast and our food and service was amazing. But don't got there if you have a party over 4 people. This place is great; the food here is really good, much better than the prepackaged of Bob Evans. (Seriously Bob Evans?) The portions are large, I always get the Gut Buster, minus the gravy, and it's everything that unhealthy food should be and more. The potato pancakes are divine. Yes it can be a hassle to go sometimes, I have never had an issue parking though, the waits are long on weekends but at least now they have opened an additional room that can accommodate groups. The do take credit card but they will not separate checks, they will also not let you sit until your entire party is present if they are busy. I highly recommend this place, its great greasy spoon food with a wonderful diner atmosphere. read more
