New Yorker visiting family here & I had the absolute worse experience at this location - the supposed manager/server was loud & rude with no inside voice & had the nerve to try & scream on me for a tip she did not earn; I couldn't get a physical receipt, the sausage patties were rubber & the eggs weren't scrambled.. they were damn near a crumble. I do not recommend this place for anyone, visiting or local - manager was a trashy, big mouth individual.. literally kept yelling in my ear: 'what are you going to tip me.. what are you going to tip me while I repeatedly asked for a physical receipt, saying verbatim: I wipe tables.. what are you going to tip me lol it was almost comical - I'm from Harlem NYC and I've NEVER EVERRR experienced anything close to this - DO NOT RECOMMEND.. I've been wanting to try this place for several years now, ever since moving to Columbus. It's well known for its long history of business as a diner in the Old North area. Unfortunately, the visit wasn't as awesome as I had hoped. Before our food was even served, I was disappointed in the standard service offered by the menu and limitations of the accommodations. Upon arriving, all accessible tables (every other one per COVID guidelines) were occupied, so our server offered my party of 3 seats at the diner bar. After ordering coffees and noticing some of the parties at booths appeared to be leaving, I asked if we would be able to move once a booth opened up. She told us no, staying once we were seated, we couldn't move. This seemed strange, but whatever. COVID makes for strange rules. Our server was super friendly, and she did let us know it was only her second day working. She frequently had to ask the Kitchen before being able to answer our questions surrounding my sister's gluten allergy, inquiring about gluten free bread, and when this wasn't an option, substitutions for toast as a side. Not only did they not have gluten free options, but they refused to allow substitutions of any kind. We acknowledged our understanding and asked for wheat toast for both mine and my sister's meals, and just for hers to be put on my plate, emphasizing again that she is allergic. As our food was served, there was now only one other party in the restaurant, all previously occupied booths now open and unattended. When our plates were placed, the server said to my sister, "I made sure the bread isn't touching," placing the omelette and toast in front of her. I took the bread and put it on my plate, leaving behind crumbs, so my sister asked for a new plate to switch her omelette to. She was given a plate and the omelette switched; however, it wasn't until after the plate was placed back in front of her that it was filthy with dust. She attempted to wipe dust off of the surrounding edges of the plate but the bottom of the omelette was covered the moment it hit the plate. We pointed this out to the staff and they moved slowly, as if confused, first offering a new plate, then only after I spoke up and asked if they would remake the meal, obliging to provide a new omelette. We were sure to emphasize the gluten allergy and omission of toast this time!! By the time we were eating, my omelette was cold- my fault for waiting, but I wanted to be considerate of my sis. Hers was warm and both were pretty good. Nothing amazing, but a good omelette. Unfortunately, disappointments weren't done. The toast wasn't wheat, it was white. And our server never came back to check on us, so after flagging her down to ask if the bread was in fact wheat, because it tasted white, she said, "yeah I asked for wheat," and left it at that. Later, when cashing out, we saw she had written our toast selection on the kitchen ticket as "WH," so I feel like that could have easily been interpreted as white by the kitchen. Anyway. Overall it was a real bummer of an experience, especially having wanted to go for so long and knowing the history of the place. It always sucks when your hopes are let down by a place that weighed so heavily in your mind prior to visiting. Especially when some of the things that made the visit unenjoyable seemingly could have been avoided with better adjusted customer service. Anyway. Now we know. Try it if it's the only option, like it was for us this morning. And make sure you choose your seat wisely!! read more

After an early vaccination at the Schottenstein Center, the best nearby breakfast option was Jack & Benny's. I hadn't been there for a couple of years, despite working on campus at OSU, but I figured that their solid eggs benedict would pair well with a dose of Pfizer, and I certainly wasn't disappointed. We were actually the first customers there, arriving a few minutes before opening. The other three times I've been there they've been packed, and I've had to wait...but being there early made a big difference. Both my girlfriend and I wound up ordering the standard eggs benny, and she had an orange juice as well. Honestly, the bennies were just as good as always. They're not excellent -- maybe a little salty, and the hollandaise isn't overly flavorful -- but something about them makes me clear my plate every time. We were in and out in half an hour, and $25 for a breakfast for two is fine by me. Make no mistake: Jack & Benny's is very much an old school diner, with many years of "character" (if I'm being charitable) built into its aging decor. The tables, flooring, dishes, utensils -- you name it -- all scream "diner." It doesn't purport to be any more than it is, however, and for some tasty food in the campus area, it's no wonder it's such a big draw during peak hours. read more

This place is always busy; make sure you get your name on the list next to the door when you walk in, or you'll never get a table. This place is cramped and a little dingy...and that's exactly why I like it. I've now been here twice, ordering the Jack Buster both times. This plate isn't for the weak of heart (or anyone who is at risk for heart disease). Biscuits, a nice peppered gravy, hash brows, eggs (over easy, please!), and buttered rye toast. My stomach grumbles a little bit just thinking about it. Another big plus about Jack & Benny's? Their coffee is actually not your standard diner sludge, but it's pretty tasty. We came on a Sunday for breakfast and it wasn't too crowded, but we still had to wait. Luckily, they had free coffee in the waiting area (and interesting decor, note the old programs from Ohio State football games). Once we were seated, we sat at the counter. The place is very old school (coffee, water, and simple breakfast fare). My mom and I ordered egg white cheese omelets, turkey sausage, grits, and toast; while my brother got a sausage omelet with hash browns. My omelet was cheesy in the best way, the grits were gritty, the sausage was savory, and the toast was cripsy and buttered. The staff was friendly and unpretentious, a real joint. Overall, the food is decent, albeit no frills, but sometimes you really need that. I'll definitely be back here. read more

Also, they will not do separate checks, one check for one table, so if you need separate checks just take cash and give your portion to the one paying. The food is simple and the prices are reasonable. Featured pancakes are on the board on the wall. Try the coconut pancakes as they are very good. The Eggs Benny is very good also, especially with hot sauce. The apple and swiss omelet is very good, I add salsa & sour cream. I could drink the coffee by the gallon, it is soo good. They offer pepsi products and Nantucket Nectars to drink. This is a corner diner and the food is diner fare, not the healthiest but certainly not the worst if you choose your food wisely. The crowd is a mix of locals and OSU students. I like the atmosphere here, it's very laid back. The students will appreciate the OSU football bobbleheads under the counter and the pics on the wall. There is one of my hero, Woody Hayes, those were the days! The family that owns J&Bs are avid soccer fans. There are pics of Elvis and scenes from the 50s also. Breakfast in my favorite meal of the day, so breakfast diners are obviously my favorite places to go eat. Jack & Benny's has limited seating and limited hours, so there's a lot of hype that generates over this cozy diner. It lives up to the hype and more, by offering a large menu of breakfast goods, including originals such as the "Jack Buster" and "Benny Buster". Seasonal fruit are mixed in to the pancake mixes, but my favorite is coconut pancakes. They're delicious and so sweet you don't even need syrup. Eggs are made to order, and there is a wide choice of omelets, including my personal pick of apples and Swiss cheese. The staff is friendly, and they're always refilling your cup with hot coffee. Jack & Benny's opens early, so you'll see the crowd coming in hung-over from the night before, to get some food in that stomach. Be warned, there are no separate checks. So if you go in a group, figure out who is paying the bill before you go in. read more

WARNING- menu says "Fresh" corned beef hash. To them this means "freshly prepared" because it's out of a package. Also maybe ask that the male cook wear protective gloves like the young girl did. One word: PANCAKES. I had a dream the night before I came here that I was eating a huge stack of delicious, buttery pancakes. Naturally I woke up craving them. My friend told me about this place and I met him here for lunch (just in time for the COVID-19 restaurant shut down). I got a blueberry pancake and a side of turkey bacon. My friend got the Gut Buster which he loves and say is his go-to. The pancake lived up to the ones I was eating in my dreams. Fluffy but crisp around the edges with a generous amount of blueberries inside. Also, they serve real butter as opposed to margarine which I was ecstatic about. The turkey bacon and coffee were delicious as well. I tried my friend's hash browns are they were amazing...perfectly crispy on the outside. I love the vibe of this place, too. Nothing fancy....just a super cool, old school diner vibe. Service was fast but meh. I would have liked a coffee and water refill but no one came by. One downside, they don't have straws. I know, I know, save the turtles....but, during this pandemic, I would have felt a bit more at ease drinking my water through a straw. Jack & Benny's is a campus area favorite that has long been the go-to mom & pop breakfast restaurant for decades. I opted for the Jack's Dad which consists of fresh corned beef hash, 2 eggs, hash browns, and toast. The portions are always large and the price is reasonable; the same consistency rings true for the quality & speed. My one gripe is that the service can be hit or miss. Sometimes I get a very friendly server who really personalizes my dining experience and makes me feel at home; yet sometimes I get an emotionless server who just provides adequate service.   All in all, if you haven't stopped by Jack & Benny's, I'd highly recommend you do so soon. This spot has been on my "brunch" list since I loved to Columbus a couple years ago and I finally made the trip this morning. We arrived around 2pm and had no issues finding a spot to park and we were able to grab 2 free seats at the bar. The service was great, the TV was on the NCAA games, and our visit was perfect! In ordered the Eggs Benny (because, well, duh... It's Jack and BENNY's) and the bf ordered the Gut Buster. Both meals were ready quickly and do not disappoint! The restaurant is pretty small so if you go on a Sunday or Saturday morning expect a wait. I don't know what you expect from a small breakfast place on campus, it's going to be busy especially on the weekends. Anything with their chorizo is delicious. Their omelettes are huge and they stuff them full! Also, their prices are cheap for the amount of food you get. I called before I went into this place to place a pickup order. I was told I can only do a pickup order in person. I end up making the trip to high st to place an order. Once I arrive, I'm told that I can't place a pickup order. I told the waitress that over the phone I was told I can order in person, she asked who told me that. I tell her whoever they have answering the phones told me that. I then ask her what's the difference if I sat down and ordered and just took my food with me. So I made it easy on myself and picked that. 2 large puffy pancakes with fresh raspberries cooked in toasted pretty good. I couldn't finish both pancakes though. Today on the other hand it was unprofessional, they are normally open till 2 and had a sign up saying they were closing at 1, we were there before noon so we figured we'd wait. 10 minute after we put our name on the list the staff came out and said it had been a hectic morning and the kitchen decided to close. We were so excited to try this highly recommended diner. We did not have masks on hand nor were they for sale. We were declined to add our name to the waitlist. After scrambling around to local businesses, to purchase a mask and tipped the cashier for helping me, we returned to the diner to place a togo. I then witnessed three other individuals without a mask inside the establishment with the same employee present. I was absolutely livid with the inconsistent policy, and their intimidation to enforce all races and sexes to follow. When our food came out to the table the eggs I received were cold so I requested new ones which were brought out. Then, as we continue eating my boyfriend who ordered the "Bennys mom" found the longest strand of hair in the steak. We showed our server and she said she didn't see it so I pulled it out of the meat and put it on a napkin and showed her. She just said she'd take it off the bill but we requested to just receive a new one she said okay and we never received it. In the midst of all of this happening, we look over and we see the cook scratching his beard under his mask while he was speaking with a customer. He did it more than once and turned around and went right back to the grill without washing his hands! He wasn't even wearing glove either.. It was easier to get to as a student living in the neighborhood then it is today by car which is the reason I don't eat here that often anymore. Lacking available parking much of the day ( a good thing as a sea of asphalt diarrhea in front of this gorgeous Tudor building would be a sin against cityscape,) it's advisable to arrive early when street side parking is open by the door. This I did, and it saved me from a line too, which can form later in the day. One of those campus intitutions I remember so well, up in Old North Columbus where once there was several of such. As a mainstream diner it served up the gressey grub ( not so greasy actually), comfort food as they call it, grandma's breakfast, a treat and a save from McDonald's or ramen noddles when you were short on cash. (ugg.) It hasn't changed much by my account. From the bay widows it looks like a slender diner of bar and booths, but it also has a wider dinning room with tables. I sat at the bar, on a rickety 1960ish stool that felt like it could collapse at any moment. I like old stuff--to a point, but there is a time when somethings usefulness is plainly done. This stool needs reconditioned or replaced. Decent coffee, a Denver omelette, and a bagel was my order. Wonderfully tight and tastee the Omelette is nicely balanced in flavor. Their bagels are very soft-- these are not New York begels but mainstream American interpretation. I washed down the meal with OJ poured from their machine adding a juicy acidic add-on to the egg and meat. It was good. Now J&B is certainly a five star candidate, a rating I gave their new Downtown store because of the location. I think it fall short in that it doesn't, from the many meals I have tried here, have a signature item. You know that dish that just rises from the rest-- either a standard bearer or a new invention-- that makes you crave and only want to get it at that place. I think of they had one of those I'd rank it at the top of my breakfast choices. But as it is, their offerings are at least my top five. On parking: it is street side. The best is between Dodridge and Hudson on High, or down Hudson towards Neil. Be careful. Parking could be limited on football Saturdays. Love coming to JB's for breakfast, brunch, and lunch. A classic american diner that will seat you in a suit, sweats, jeans, or shorts. Offers good food... comfort food, good prices, and fresh squeezed orange juice that is second to none. Beware of weekends but enjoy the weekdays here. Only thing I have ever ordered here is breakfast plates so can't comment on the other half the menu. The only issues I have had is wait times to get a table which is a double edged sword, it sucks to have to wait but you know they are popular. Food service slows down during peak times but you can only do so much with a single flat top. Probably eaten here a 100 times or more over the years and have occasionally got a disinterested server during slow times or an overwhelmed server during busy times.
