We arrived for our reservation early, so we sat at the bar for a drink and a dozen oysters. I tried the signature drink, the siren. It was out of this world. When it was time for our reservation, we were seated outside at a table with a wonderful view. Our reservation was around 730 which was perfect to see the sunset. If you can get a table at Jack Dusty, it is great but, that is the problem. When the Ritz-Carlton is charging $1500+ a night for a room, you have to pray to be able to get a drink at their bar/restaurant. Great drinks, solid food , great service - hard to find a seat. We planned ahead and got an outdoor couch at 3pm (after waiting 45 mins for someone to leave). And it was awesome. I can't imagine showing up at 6pm and trying to get a meal. Long line and longer wait. They need to prioritize RC guests to get a table. Smoking Jacket Old Fashioned was great. Spicy Margarita was awesome. Solid burger. Beet salad good. Arriving in Sarasota from Chicago late last evening and literally no restaurants open at 9:00 pm! Jack Dusty came up on my search as the only open restaurant near the airport open! I basically had no choice! But what a surprise and delight! ( yes, I should have known because I never have had a bad Ritz experience). From the valet service ( even though a Cards fan!) to the hostess with the mostess (I loved her!) my waiter- impeccable- sweet and caring- AND I got a great idea for my fisherman husband from a recent unbelievable Canada Salmon fishing wilderness trip he took this time last year! Loved this guy and felt like I had known him in a past life. And yes the salad with grilled shrimp ( not really even on the menu but that's what I wanted!) the house cab, the BREAD ( which I never eat)-were all excellent! You walk into the restaurant and it's got a great bar, and beautiful setting. I love the decorations around the restaurant. The place settings were perfect for the theme---fish silverware and hand-kiln, odd size dishes. I especially enjoyed the sayings on the coasters. I included a photo of the place setting. Then there's the food--so good!! We had swordfish, yellowtail snapper, mussels, oysters, calamari, clam chowder and scallops. Most of the meals were accompanied with a beautiful side of vegetables. All of the food was amazingly good. Oh, and the service was perfect. And another amazing dinner experience: Jack Dusty's offers freshly made, tasty creations. We have been to Hack Rusty's several times as visitors to the Sarasota area. The most recent visit was a bit disappointing. The service was still phenomenal. Unfortunately.., The entrees were one 4 stars and the 2. My dates grouper entree had a fantastic sear but looked and tasted exactly like the frozen grouper from Publix. It lacked flavor and was not complemented by the cauliflower purée. Maybe it is just me.... Does anyone REALLY want a cauliflower purée? Colorless, bitter, blaaaaccckkk! On the other hand, I had the Sarasota Cioppino,which was expertly executed. A little more tomato and it would have killed the bakance of acids. And all of the seafood was perfectly cooked, not rubbery. read more

Excellent food and drinks. I had ceviche - dry fresh and chock full of seafood (scallops, shrimp and fish), fresh cilantro. Says it's an appetizer but I had it as a meal. We also had the grouper sandwich- excellent piece of fish. Drinks - I went out on a limb and tried something I would not usually get - but it sounded good - the Smoked Painkiller. The presentation alone was worth it. Even better it tasted great. Potent but not over powering. I have a video - but won't let me select video for posting. It comes in a large decanter filled with smoke and the beverage at the bottom. Pours smoke into the glass and the drink comes last. Very dramatic and cool. Recommend this just to see it. Have been coming for over 15 years for wha "used to be" the best chocolate martini in Sarasota. While the martini has lost a lot, the outside patio atmosphere was always delightful...until this evening. We always enjoyed the upper deck seating, particularly around the fire pit which lately hasn't been lit. Remembering the days when if not a chocolate martini, on a chilly evening it was hot chocolate, s'mores dessert and even a blanket. When the upper deck seating was full, we'd often take a high top table on the side deck and always had pleasant drink service without question. Tonight we waited over 1/2 hour without even being acknowledged! We finally waived down a waiter, who ignored us and saw him mouth "it's not my section", so we still waited. A very nice server in training mentioned at the front desk that we needed service. A 20 something hostess with an iPad and an attitude approached and asked our name and said those tables are for food service. When I said we've been here many many times for only drinks and never food and it was never a problem. With a condescending attitude said she could take our name and send a server! Was she doing us a favor?? After 45 minutes of waiting and way too much discussion over ordering a cocktail, we decided to leave. Overall an insulting experience!! I've never been to a place that is so overrated. Came to celebrate my best friend's birthday. I wanted to take her somewhere special, thinking that this one would be impressive. Not at all. The interior is nothing special. No wow factor here. The ambiance, very poor. No proper lighting. The bar looked very mediocre.. some bartender with semi long hair like a rockstar..disgusting.. then I look around, this place has no dress code! Flip flops and dirty feet, totally acceptable. I thought I was at the Ritz Carlton. This name used to mean something. Hostess was nice and friendly. Then.. we wait forever for a waiter to show up.. it's like 90 degrees and we are sitting outside.. I might need water. We almost walked out. Then the waiter comes (Matt?), obviously not experienced, has no idea what to recommend. I ask for sparkling wine, he is recommending cava rose? Lol.. cava is horrible. Don't know how they even have this one the menu. Bread comes, waiter says "oh, it's Boston brown bread".. lol.. don't know what that was but it was very doughy and sticky, bread should be fluffy and/or crunchy.. didn't like it.. and one bread knife? Like my friend and I have to share bread knife, lol.. maybe get your budget together and give bread knives to people, individually. We order a bunch of appetizers. Want to see how good is the food and decide if we want to stay. Food comes, nothing special about it. Fish dip was good, but the "chips" it comes with was I think the matzo crackers for Passover.. lol.. Are you serious? You've never heard of artisan crackers or maybe some nice toast? Tasteless plane crackers.. blah.. wait that's not all! The charcuterie comes with the same horrible matzo crackers.. so original.. it was also an incredibly boring charcuterie, had 4 super thin slices of salami, 5 tiny grapes (the only fruit), and cheese I can buy from Costco.. I've never seen such poor and unoriginal charcuterie. French fries was ok. Edible. On the beet salad would've love to see more greens, it was ok, but again, very mediocre. The entire experience was just not impressive at all. Then the waiter is like "would you like to order main course?" We said no, and he was obviously very upset. He told us he would give us a dessert on the house, (because my friend has bday) as if I count my dollars, and that's why I'm not ordering entrees.. I mean, you could be nice and comp the dessert after we order one, but saying it like "oh we'll give you dessert on the house" as if I'm the winner of the Powerball, c'mon that's tacky and insulting. I don't care for your free dessert. Also, when he took my empty flute glass, didn't even asked me if I wanted another one. Like I mentioned earlier, inexperienced. To end this, I think I should mention that all the waiters looked very unhappy, and none of them had and actual uniform. Only matching shirts, but Nike sneakers with big nike logos?! Tacky. They should go to Selva, or Kojo, see how waiters behave and how they are dressed. I give those as examples, because these restaurants are also in Sarasota. Not comparing with 4 seasons in NYC or something.. overall I can't believe people speak of this place on yelp as if it's so impressive.. it's one and done for me. Jack dusty is located within the Ritz Carlton. If I were just reviewing hotel restaurants, I'd say this was a 4/5. However, I'm not. So it's a 3. Drinks are great. By far, their cocktails are superb. However they're pricey, which is to be expected since they are based within the Ritz Carlton. The atmosphere is nice, especially if there's good weather and you can get seating outdoor facing the courtyard and the water. I've lucked out in the past without a reservation and snagged the first come first serve benches outside, but if you're planning a special event or bringing more than one person, you probably want to make a reservation before hand. Service is actually not great, which surprised me. Staff was definitely overworked and busy every time we went, so hospitality wasn't really on the table. Our food got lost at one point and we had to wait 90 minutes and there was no comp or apology. Also, ordering at the bar to be a nightmare. Overall it's nice... good for a date, business meeting or if you're already at the Ritz. read more

It's the kind of place you could just sit and not move for hours. The drinks are superb. I am not even a big cocktail drinker, but the quality here is unmatched. This was where I chose to take my new fiance for our post-engagement dinner. I think that says enough as to my feelings on good ole' JD. Said fiance went with one of the steaks and it was succulent. Had a great dinner here a couple weeks back. I had been telling my man about it for months and when we decided to do a weekend getaway I knew a dinner here had to be included (we stayed across the marina at the Hyatt) I made a reservation well ahead of time and when arrived they asked if we were staying at the hotel. when I said no they stated they had a nice table outside saved for me. OUtSIDE? in what were literally 40mph wind gusts and about 45degree temp. That got a quick NO. Ok, well we can sit you by the bar at the window, umm, ok,turns out its basically a bar shelf with stools around it and right next to the door. Now I will say, once the crowd thinned, very soon thereafter, we were moved to the other end of the "shelf" with more room. They also graciously brought us an order of fried green tomatoes with crab as an apology for our inconvenience. (a $19 value) Very courteous! Under orders to try a crafted drink my man got the Zaya daiquiri and loved it.($12) I got the siren ($23) and loved it. Why was a drink $23 you ask? Well it was vodka, st germain, fresh lemon juice and prosecco served over grapefruit ice, cranberry ice, and flower ice. So as it melted it became a different flavor. Really good. A great experience to try once. For food we had the clams with Andouille sausage and a chardonnay sauce ($17) really good. the combinations of flavors was spot on. We also had the local caviar, they get it from Mote marine and serve it traditionally with belini, egg whites and yolks, onion and crème freche. Very very good. Also very pricey. Don't ask how much. We then had the Kale and white cheddar salad ($16) kale, bacon, white cheddar, blackberries and almonds. That was one good salad. I'll be stealing that recipe. Being somewhat full we opted to split the cioppino for "dinner" ($28) came with shrimp, scallops, clams, mussels, grouper served with orange peel and tomato broth. to die for! The grouper was so good I kept picking it out and let the man have the other seafood. We also tried a couple of their other housemade drinks and had a wonderful oakey chardonnay as well. This is the dining room of the Ritz, renamed and remodeled from yesteryear. Still, a high level of service and quality of food, as you'd expect, even though it's a more casual setup. Lot's of options on salads makes it easy to order your greens. One diner enjoyed their cioppino, while two loved the grouper etouffee. The 4th diner ordered half plates. A nice renovation from the previous restaurant. It's so beautiful, contemporary, and chic. Ritz Sarasota really needed this upgrade. The menu, however, is still very similar to the old restaurant. Not that it's a bad thing, just not a whole newness to the wow factor in food. The crab cakes have improved though. It was fishy the first time I had it there and now it's just right. The bread in the can is a favorite for everyone. The drinks are always great though, and service is attentive. The view is awesome. I love the patio, but what has turned me off was the attack of fire ants on the patio. I am still swollen and itchy from this weekend's attack. I understand it's part of Florida life, but they need to treat the area on occasion to avoid these attacks on diners. We let them know and they brought out an ice pack and capsules of some sort to treat the bites, but half a dozen bites later and I'm still turned off and in fear of attack.
