This reminded me of Waffle House and is why we went. My wife loved the Migas & Chorizos and I can't lie, it looked great. Me on the other hand, International Burrito with 3 pancakes. It was a good size and I couldn't finish it. The pancakes came piping hot, loaded with butter and the fluffiness melted in my mouth. You can definitely feel the spirit of the ghost of IHOPs past at this revamped location, but Jackie's Kitchen offers a cleaner, nicer, more personable experience. The menu consists of your standard diner breakfast fare, and they've even retained the crepes and blintzes you might find on an IHOP menu. We kept to a traditional American breakfast on this trip though, with the Quick Breakfast (two eggs, two bacon, hashbrowns and biscuits) for me and the French Toast for Trevor B. The food is decidedly average, but just like IHOP, Jackie's Kitchen is a place you can go when you've just rolled out of bed, splashed water on your face and put on deodorant before stepping out the door. Prices are reasonable - breakfast for well under $10 per person in most cases. The kids' breakfasts are the true value though. For $3.29, you can either get five silver dollar pancakes, bacon and an egg, or two pieces of french toast and two pieces of bacon. The restaurant is also outfitted in almost all booths, so the under-5 set can crawl all over you to their hearts' content. In general, I'm having an issue with drink prices across Houston, and Jackie's Kitchen is no different. Four drinks will run you upwards of $7, which is a travesty of justice; at least you get your own carafe of coffee and don't have to wait for someone to refresh you. Jackie's Kitchen is just down the street from Frank's Grill, which a lot of people seem to like. However, I would say that aside from the biscuits, which are better at Frank's, Jackie's is just as good and way cleaner. I'm willing to forgo the biscuits to be able to sit at a table and walk on floors that aren't sticky with syrup. read more

The mixed reviews of this unassuming diner peeked my interest, so I decided to stop in for breakfast to try it for myself. I was greeted and seated immediately in a small, albeit cozy booth. The kitchen is open concept, as this is an old-school, fast-cook diner. Everything looked clean and well-kept, although the decor is definitely dated and boring. My waitress was extremely attentive and friendly. The menu has a nice mix of typical Americana diner items (omelets, pancakes, hamburgers), along with some unexpected additions like crepes and hollandaise, grilled fish, and quesadillas. It may seem silly, but I like the fact that the menu is very picture-heavy...sparked my appetite. :) I ordered the chicken crepes and biscuits with gravy. I can't attest as to whether the hollandaise or the gravy are completely from scratch (I suspect both are made from starter powders but certainly not canned), but both were very tasty in the context of this being an affordable diner. The chicken, mushrooms, spinach and Swiss cheese ingredients in the crepes were identifiable, fresh and delicious. While the crepes were not the most finessed, thinnest savories I've ever had, they were good too. I'd gladly pay $8 to eat them again. The biscuits were nicely crisped on the flattop before being smothered in gravy, and I'll try those with sausage included next time. Overall, this place is a perfectly pleasant way to go for affordable, unassuming diner food. It isn't a trendy go-to like Lola's in the Heights, but that's what's so like able about it. I have been coming to this building since a high school friend worked at the old IHOP. Since.we moved back to the area, we started coming to Jackie's Kitchen. Paulina is my favorite waitress. She is not only observant and attentive to each table's needs, but she also helps her fellow employees while working her own tables with ease. As someone in the restaurant business for 20+ years, I must say it is a pleasure to watch het work. Stellar and consistent service is provided by Paulina. Jackie runs a tight ship, which is plain to see. She is not quite as dilligent as she was, back in the beginning of this restaurant, but things bssically run quite smoothly, with fairly consistent food that is comparable to any IHOP. Lately, as in my last 2 visits, I have determined they must have changed shifts or hired a new cook. The first time, I ordered an egg over easy and received something with clear and uncooked egg whites. If you know anything about cooking eggs, you know the secret to a good over easy egg is to keep the yolk runny while cooking the whites. Should you order an egg at Jackie's, they are telling me that over medium is what that is. Apparently, all of France is incorrect, as well as any reputable establishment who gives a damn about their customers. I ordered my eggs scrambled today. When I received them, they were cold. It was the first thing I ate, and it has just come to the table. The eggs looked like they sat in the window, which is why I touched them with my hands to check the temperature. I had to get Jackie to microwave my eggs. In conclusion, I'd probably stick with the omelets here. And the waffles are delicious. As are sandwiches and pancakes. One does not have to worry about receiving food cooked improperly and getting a stomachache later. They will charge you anyway, even if you don't take a bite, and they will argue that it is your fault for ordering the dish in the first place. To he clear, this place is recommended with reservation. Franks down the street does a substantially better job on their eggs. read more

On a recent trip to Houston, we happened upon Jackie's Kitchen while looking for some brunch/lunch after we checked out of our usual Sheraton Brookhollow. I remember when this place was a House of Pancakes, and they didn't deviate much. They do have chicken wings and a waffle. The chicken was pretty good, but unless I'm sitting down for more than 6 wings, I'd really rather have a drumstick or a moist breast (make what jokes you will). The waffle was, like others have mentioned, not crispy whatsoever and not much in the flavor department. More than that, I had to load on the butter and syrup to get any flavor out of it. M liked his omelet and pancakes. Their OJ comes in a big glass, and isn't too expensive. Their menu isn't very off from a Denny's or IHOP. I can see us coming back here and trying something new, but only if we stay at the same hotel. read more

Frank's was closed for Easter, so the hubs and my sisters came to Jackie's for Sunday brunch. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of food that we received! Jackie's has a great selection of breakfast, brunch, and lunch/dinner entrees to choose from. The selection is much more diverse than that of Franks, to be sure. They have the traditional eggs sausage and pancakes, but they also have great options such as specialty omelette's and crepes! I tried the chicken crepe, my husband got the spinach omelet, and my sister got the cream cheese and strawberry stuffed french toast. Everything came out quickly, the waitress was friendly, and it was all so delicious! The omelet and crepe had Bearnaise sauce on top, and if you're not a big fan of a lot of sauce I would ask for it on the side (there's a lot of sauce!). The french toast was great- two pieces of french toast, with cream cheese and strawberries in the middle like a sandwich. The restaurant wasn't crowded when we arrived around 11am, but again we came on Easter so perhaps the place is more crowded on a "normal" Sunday. We had no issues being seated right away, being greeted and brought drinks, and we got all our food about 15 minutes after we were sat. I think this is a place we will come back to soon. The breakfast is nothing fancy but it's always consistently delicious diner faire and the eggs are just the best in town. Today's review is for a non-breakfast item which blew my mind at it's greatness -- the Pot Roast Sandwich! The combination of the perfectly grilled sourdough bread, flat top grilled onions and some of the most tender roast beast I have ever had made for one absolutely delightful "brunch". While it's undeniable, the only thing that gives this former IHOP away is a vague sense that you've been here before. The clean and brightly lit interior takes Jackie's well beyond its chain restaurant past, as does the friendly and attentive waitstaff. The menu is pretty straigtforward, with breakfast, lunch, and dinner classics. Though I'm sure their burgers and sandwiches are good, and I'll certainly have to come back for their CFS, I'll bet I primarily frequent Jackie's for the most important meal of the day, as I was this past weekend. The chicken and waffles are featured prominently on both the menu and the website, so I felt I better meet them on their own turf, and I was glad I did. The fluffy waffle was crisp on the outside, soft in the middle, and dressed simply with whipped butter and a light dusting of powdered sugar. While other place might offer two legs or a large breast, Jackie's serves up six Buffalo-sized wings, perfectly fried. And if you're a fan of the seasoned, fried skin exterior, this is really the way to go, because with six wings you get a much higher skin-to-chicken ratio than you would with something like a large breast. The savory wings really made a great compliment to the sweet waffle. Since I was trying out a new breakfast diner, I had to try a couple of other barometers, so I ordered sides of bacon and hash browns like a true glutton. The bacon was crispy, if unremarkable, and the hash browns were just like I like them, soft and potatoey with a crispy griddled top layer - you'll have to season them to taste with salt and pepper. Our excellent waitress kept our glasses filled and was quick to return with anything we needed, including the check. We paid our reasonable tab up front with the hostess who I took to be Jackie, and we were on our way. First taste- the coffee. It was hot brown water, literally. I think I realized there was no hope after about 12 packs of sugar and 4 creamers. I'm no coffee snob...well...maybe a little...but this stuff was straight up pond water, no chaser. Waitress said it was from "fresh-ground coffee beans"- ordered a new cup and it was just as tasteless as the first. On to the meal: We ordered the hearty breakfast & chicken & waffles. Portion was great- taste was not. How can you mess up hashbrowns, scrambled eggs, and sausage? By using the same old grease to cook everything, that's how! Every bite left a bitter oily after-taste. It was sadly inedible. The pancakes were good- just as good as the ones you can buy in the frozen food section of your local grocery. This is a perfect spot to go have breakfast. I came here on a Saturday morning and the parking lot was pretty full, but there were still places to park. We were greeted right away, and seated. Service was so friendly and after we ordered, it felt like our food came out within 10 minutes. It's like they already knew what we were going to order haha. The food was hot, and delicious. The French toast, while basic, was soft but well cooked and I'm usually just a bubbler when it comes to hashbrowns but these were so good that I added a little salt and went to work. Let me break it down. I was greeted by the owner which was nice. She could turn down the dramatic make up however its Saturday morning not Saturday night. She seemed nice though. The waiter (a younger cute guy) was good. No issues with wait staff. Now to the food...I will say it should have been a sign to me that this place was not all that and a bag of chips when I notice the type of people that are here. Old or caucassion and/or both. The bacon was good and the grits were good. But eveything else (pancakes and eggs) was not good quality. I think that if they use better eggs and/or real eggs and started really making real pancakes with some better batter it would make a HUGE difference. I noticed something was up when I had to start using way to much syrup. Syrup is suppose to enhance, not drown. There was no 'wow' factor and I could have obtained WAY better quality food at McD's or Franks Grill both blocks from each other. Just what I had been looking for! Having lived on the East Coast most of my life, I was inundated with diner options. There is nothing like a greasy-spoon breakfast, meatloaf, or chicken-fried steak with red-eye gravy. When I moved here, I found that I missed diners so much, because I wasn't able to find anything near authentic and affordable. I happened to arrive early at a friend's birthday party at Karbach, and was hungry so I stopped in at Jackie's without any prior knowledge of it. I ordered a cup of coffee, a fresh-squeezed OJ and the hungry(wo)man breakfast without toast/pancake (which the waitress asked me again if I was sure of the omission). Man! It came out so fast and, boy, were those eggs cooked to a perfect over medium. Plus, the coffee was flowing like delicious, free refill motor oil. (I should have gotten a pancake. My neighbor's looked like it was golden and fluffy and cloud-like.) I had found diner heaven for a mere $8. Oh, and have you ever been to one of those chain pancake restaurant/diners and you came out smelling like what everyone else ate. Such a pet peeve of mine. Well, this WILL NOT happen at Jackie's! Rest assured, you will come out of the restaurant with a full belly food baby and that same smell of last night's cologne on your person. I promise, you will love this place. read more

All the conveniences of IHOP, but with better food and, drum roll please, CHICKEN and WAFFLES! The great part of chain restaurants is that they are so well organized and consistent. Jackie's Kitchen has these same qualities but the menu is that of a family diner and off the beaten path or IHOP or Dennys. The chicken and waffles are incredible. The fried chicken is crisp with a golden brown skin battered lightly, and a juicy inside. The waffles don't stand out among waffles, but serve their purpose. Omelets are good, but not great. Pancakes are great. Coffee is good, but not great. The crepes are not the highlight so I wouldn't got for this item. Plain flavor and lackluster fillings. Portions are good and when you can get a huge brunch for less than $10 including tip, there is nothing to complain about! read more

It's a simple breakfast/brunch spot, but they do all the right things. There's never a long wait and the food typically comes fast. Servers are highly attentive and the cooks know how the difference between an over-easy egg and an over-medium one. I come here almost every month and have never had a bad experience.
