My son was on his way to an important biking event and had broken his spur gear (on a Transition PBJ dirt jumper) so it was a somewhat rare piece. I was having some trouble with gear shifting on my Raleigh hybrid bike. If I shifted into the lowest gear, the chain came off the derailleur. Other gears were sluggish to engage. I thought I would have to leave my bike at a repair shop for some length of time, which was inconvenient because I was only in town for a couple of days. I called Jack's and they said to bring the bike in and they thought they would have time to fix in within my schedule. I brought it in and a very nice bike technician mounted my bike and tried to diagnose the problem. Within about 15 minutes he had fixed the problem entirely! I took a test ride and it was working perfectly. This was a great time saver for me. He only charged me $25 bucks, which I thought was more than reasonable, since I was expecting it to need a complete overhaul. Jack's is a well-staffed and efficient bike repair center (in addition to selling bikes and accessories). I counted at least four technicians hard at work serving customers. I found the staff who greeted me to be rather arrogant. I was told there was no way my bike could be serviced the day I brought it in, because they were too busy. I stated I spoke to someone over the phone who said I could have it serviced that day if I arrived at a particular time. I still got push back and told they couldn't help. They assumed for some reason I didn't have an appointment. When I articulated I had one, they still were ill-mannered and asked my name. I provided it, they confirmed I had an appointment then told me that I should have told them that. On my way out, I hear the ask someone who comes in with a common "cyclist" look (clothes and had with cycle brands), and they are asked you front, "do you have an appointment?" Differential treatment, right there. Lastly, there is definitely some staff being pretty loose with masking, which makes no sense to me, but let's me know I have yet another reason not to return. Plenty of bike shops exist in the area. Having a long-standing in the industry doesn't mean you can treat people poorly. It's particularly bad business when there are plenty of other bike shops around here for people to take their bike to. I'll be sure to recommend elsewhere if I am asked about bike service shops. read more

Jack's is the friendliest, most helpful, and most down-to-earth local bike shop around. I've had some interesting experiences with a few others, which treated me with disdain since all I wanted was a basic hybrid, but Jack's treated me with respect and kindness. I got exactly the bike I wanted (Kona Dew) at a very good price, and it was painless. No wearing silly hi-viz vests to take a test ride (ahem, REI, ahem). No poo-pooing my budget. Just knowledgeable and good folks. Oh, and if you're a serious biker, like I used to be, it's amazing. Great high-end stuff and a staff that knows more than I'll ever know. Bottom line: if you like biking, not showing off that you like biking, these are the folks. If you want snobbery and a cold shoulder, I can think of a few other shops that might fit you better. read more

They have a great selection of bicycles and accessories. And, if you are lucky, you may even find a very nice, expensive bicycle on clearance at a great price. I will not do business with these people again. I bought a pair of tires from them and one of them actually had a small hole sliced into it by dull safety glass. I've been commuting by mountain bike for almost 3 years now and never have I had a tire chewed up by everyday debris- this was a large hole. I called them to explain what happened and asked for either a replacement or a refund and the man on the phone indicated that it was my fault for "running over glass." One, I did not even see this glass, and two, a tire should not be ripped up by something such as this. In short, they sold me shoddy merchandise at a high price and refused to take responsibility when such merchandise failed- essentially, they ripped me off. I would not do business with these people. Go the the Community Cycling Hub- at least they are honest there. read more

Excellent local shop with friendly, knowledgeable salespeople and mechanics. It's a true family-owned business, and the people you interact with there are obviously invested in the store's success. Jack's, just like the other shops in town, has its niche. There's a definite preference for mountain bikes, bmx/urban, and cyclocross, but they can talk and sell road bikes, too. Great selection of helmets, shoes, gloves, and other commuter necessities. I've been shopping bike stuff here for over a decade, and I've always left happy. They're particularly good with mountain bikes, and their decades of experience really show when they're recommending gear for the local trails. BTW, no bike shop would ever warranty a tire because a customer rode over some glass and punctured said tire. This is user error/Bad luck/Act of God. The cost of the item is irrelevant. If you have unreasonable expectations, then you probably won't approve of any place of business. read more

This is the best bicycle center in town and here's why: I bought my mountain bike here (a giant reign x) and besides getting a big discount because it was an old model, the staff at jacks guided me to pick out the right bike for my riding scenario. They even helped me to upgrade to wider handlebars and to replace my brake lever when a tree crashed into me. I'm glad I bought my bike at jacks. The people who work here are a bunch of cards. Pun intended. Mich really needs to shave. Ryan always wears hats. Kent always says stuff to make you laugh. And Rhonda rides bicycles and horses too! Jack is never around anymore. But even without the legend himself, Jack's is still the best bicycle center in town! This shop has probably close to 50 years of combined experience in the repair department. There is nothing they can't fix and they always have the cool stuff to trick out your bike! Also a tip to another reviewer: don't run over broken glass. It ruins tires duh. read more

Great LBS (local bike shop)! I have purchased a Kona Ute from them as well as a ton of accessories. A few years ago I was on a group ride and flatted three times out in the county. I convinced a guy to give me a lift in his truck to Jacks. They replaced my shredded tire, put in a new tube and let me finish my ride before I went home and called in my credit card number to pay them for such kind, generous and trusting service. THAT is the beauty of a true LBS at work!! I would have given four stars if bit weren't for the complaints I get from the mechanics every time I bring in my Ute for service. Hey, it's a long tail utility bike that the shop sells. I have a Merlin and a Seven and a Cervelo....the list of my light bikes go on but my commuter is a big heavy rig. I walked out without renting a bike after an extremely abrasive female employee spoke with me, and barked proper riding technique to children. Ended up coming back next day and was able to avoid her. Travis helped me out and gave some trail recommendations. He was polite and professional. Bike was well used but worked great. Mechanics seemed cool too. Able to rent a helmet along with the bike. Glad I went back as I had a blast riding Galbraith but couldn't believe how unpleasant the original employee had been. read more

I've gone there only three times but everyone who had gone there always raves about how good their boards were (I still have mine from 8 years ago from them)and how nice the people are that work there. Besides talking about masks ? There have been almsot zero covid cases so who cares. Needed to buy a particular bike and found just what I needed here. Kent could not have been more helpful, direct, and honest. Bike arrived in perfect shape and he fielded my questions patiently and knew what he was talking about. Customer service is top notch, prices were fair, and he delivered quickly. Completely satisfied and would buy again. FYI: http://jacksbicyclecenter.net/ Uh, "safety glass" just means it breaks into small pieces, not into heart piercing shards. I couldn't recommend Jack's highly enough. It's a great place to buy a bike if you're looking to get in the sport or if you've been riding your whole life. They have great mechanics and staff that are always there to help, but leave you alone if you're just browsing. I bring all my repairs to them and they have quick turn around times with fair pricing. Along with that, they know the Bellingham area well and give great adivce on local trails and places to ride. Everyone there has been really great, but I'd higly recommend you go talk to Mitch. He's one of their mechanics, is super knowledgeable about bikes, and always gives great recommendations on products! read more

Have been in this store a number of times, and have bought two bikes here ~ one about 20 years ago and another this past summer. The bikes were good, but the service is really lacking. The "new" bike I got came with (painted over) repair damage done and the only compensation I was given was for the age of the model (it was an 09 in 2011) and that wasn't much ~ $20 I think ~ paid a total of $1200) We shopped every bike store in the county (repeatedly) and a few south of the county and these guys were one of the two least friendliest. The ONLY reason we bought this last bike here is that it was a better bike for it's purpose. My suggestion, if you must, buy the bike and then get service elsewhere ~ they seem to be ones that would prefer it that way anyway. It would really help if you knew what you were doing or looking for before going here because they are not that forthcoming with advise and help in finding what you want. Over all, every time I've been in there it seems they could care less and other times I'm *interrupting* something ~ they were busy with something and *had to stop* to see what I want, rather than "Hi (maybe a smile) How can we help you today" (The only one who smiled there is the woman.) Don't expect much at this place and you shouldn't be too disappointed. read more

Just rented a bike from Jacks for a day. Best price and the bike I rented was a great bike for that price. The Kona big Kahuna has SRAM X7 components and quality parts. The ride I did was a 25 mile mountain ride with serious elevation that needed something light with dependable parts. It was a spectacular ride and they hooked me up with a great ride. read more

I'm not sure if the bad reviews for customer service have changed the way they do business or not but I am new to the area and have been going to all of shops in the area.. Several of those trips were made with no purchases as I went around and asked a bunch of questions. I eventually ended up with a bike purchased from Jacks's because of the great deal AND the customer service. Everyone I have interacted with at the shop has been extremely courteous and helpful to a new rider just getting started in town. I even had a problem with my bike shifting and when I spoke to them about it, they told me to bring it in and they would have a look at it right then. The adjustment was made in 10 minutes and during that time I picked up a great new helmet...Thanks for all the help and keep up the good work!! read more

After a frustrating experience at another bike shop in town, I found Jack's. This place is awesome. Great selection of bikes that really suit the local mtb trails and amazing customer service. They set up the bike for me, gave me tips about where to ride, and I got a great deal on the demo since they were closed the next day and had a few extra hours to get in another ride. Will NOT let them perform any mechanic work on my bike. Just bought a brand new Giant 2010 Reign X from them. The bike is awesome; the mechanic work horrible. This was a $3,100 AM/FR mountain bike. I literally rode it around the block in Bellingham just after purchasing it and could not shift the rear derailleur any higher than 4th gear. The gears were so out of adjustment that the chain constantly skipped around until it finally snapped after about 10 minutes of riding. I am completely appalled. I may return to the store for a replacement chain, but I assure you I will never let their hands come near my bike again. It is blatantly clear they never tested the bike after assembly. Such a mistake in mechanic assembly would only be committed by a complete amateur, and even an amateur would notice the problem instantly. This never should have occurred on a brand new bike immediately picked up from the shop. This is the first online review I have ever written, but given similar complaints from a close friend and an unbelievable experience from a right-from-the-shop bike, I couldn't bear to let others share a similar experience. If you want to buy merchandise, fine, they are your typical local shop. If you need ANY bike service, I strongly advise you steer clear of this place. I won't even use my free 2 tune up's: bottom line, cannot trust them for mechanic work. read more
