I came in with my electric bike this afternoon, because it wouldn't charge, and therefore I wasn't able to go for a ride on one of the nicest days of the year. Matt was amazing! He diagnosed the problem, fixed it quickly, gave me the warranty discount, even though it was no longer on warranty and fixed it right then and there without me having to leave my bike. I had some work done on my bike at Fairhaven Bicycles. They did a decent job on my bike, the rates were reasonable. The selection of parts and accessories was very limited, and the selection of new bikes was not large, although I know bike shops have been having trouble getting bikes right now, other shops in the area have a lot bigger selection. I am not from Bellingham, and I need a bike shop that I can drop by for quick five or ten minute tune-ups and adjustments when I'm in the area, and Fairhaven Bicycles is not very good for that, I would have had to drop my bike off and leave it even for a five minute or less adjustment. So I'll probably look for another shop to use when I am in the Bellingham area. The staff is nice, friendly, and knowledgeable. read more

I highly value customer service. Fairhaven does a great job. Long story short, bike was not shifting well. I built up a gram using a mix of old dura ace and newer ultegra. I could not get the shifting dialed in. I finally took it to fairhaven. They replaced cables, monkeyed with it for a whole day to try to get it dialed in. They realized that the old and the new were not compatible. So replaced my derailleur with another dura ace derailleur. Works perfectly. And the whole bill was $104.00. Fairhaven Bicycles is a great shop in the heart of town. The business is under new ownership, and the new owners are super friendly and knowledgeable. The sales and service staff were courteous, professional and they're all talented riders. My mountain bike had an annoying creak coming from the drivetrain, and they took care of the problem. Quick turn around time too. I noticed that they have a great selection of rental bikes, from cruiser bikes to high quality mountain bikes, and I found that they have the lowest rental rates in town. I'll be sure to rent a bike from them if I'm visiting Bellingham again and need a bike for a day or two. read more

I took my bike here a couple of weeks ago to get some modifications done (After having a crap experience at Kulshans in downtown bham) These folks were great...very polite, good customer service.... had my bike done when promised and done well...result new long term customer! I recently bought my daughter a 20" Riprock from Fairhaven Bikes. In my research I saw that Greg's cycles in Bellevue had the exact 20" Riprock that I was interested in on sale for $409 on their website. I called Fairhaven Bikes and spoke to Matt on 04/29/18 and asked them if they price matched. I'll point out my folks live in Bellevue so our family drives down regularly and stopping off there was easy enough for us. Matt confirms that they price match and advises that they do not have the color I want in stock but can order it. After work that day I swing in and speak to a female employee (I don't remember her name) and again confirm with them that they price match to Greg's. She tells me that she will call them after we are done ordering the bike and confirm the price and put a notation in their computer system. The next week rolls around and I come in on 05/03/18 to pick up the bike and Matt who is ringing me up tells me he has to call Greg's to confirm the price. What?! I didn't agree to pay the price Greg's has a week later, I was told the price was going to be confirmed the day I placed the order. Suddenly the woman I placed the order with tells me she did call and confirm the price was $429 (although there are mysteriously no notes in their system). Apparently they think I'm an idiot as I've just been told by Matt that no notation is in the system and then when pressed the woman I ordered the bike from suddenly remembers she did call and the price was $429 even though I told them the price they were matching was $409. They then went on to try to convince me that they weren't allowed to even sell the bike for less than $450 which is then countered when Matt looks it up and sees that the recommended range is $425-$450. They then try to convince me they are giving me a deal at $429. Clearly they folks don't understand the value of someone's word. If they said they would price match Greg's at $409 they should do so. If they forgot to actually call and confirm it that is not the customers problem. As I had two of my young children with me and they were closing I grudgingly agreed to pay $419 to be done with the transaction and get my kids home for dinner. I would warn others to stay away from this type of shop. This is the classic bait and switch and shows they don't give a rip about their customers. I normally shop at Fanatik and this only reinforces why. I called in to order a derailleur hanger from Fanatik last year and spoke to Jadyn. He quoted me $20 and we ordered it. When I stopped in to pick it up the cashier advised the price was $43. When I pointed out that I had spoken to Jadyn and he quoted me $20 the cashier said no problem and charged me the $20 I was quoted. That is how business should be done, honor the price quoted when ordered. I wouldn't have ordered the Riprock from Fairhaven Bikes at $450 or even $430. I could have called in and ordered it from Greg's and had my folks pick it up for $409 the week prior or gone with the Cannondale Cujo which can be had for $400 at Skagit Cycles. So they got an extra $10 plus tax out of me and gained someone who will tell everyone who will listen to stay away from this underhanded shop read more

The shop repaired a flat tire charging $50 not mentioning the possibility of the repair failing or advising on replacing the tire. So I thought I was good to go. However, on my first ride the tire blew as I descended a steep hill. I left the shop a message about the tire and they've yet to call me back. I've had quite a day trying to find a basic race road bike. I currently mountain bike and wanted to start training accordingly for races, which entails doing cardio on a more aggressive road bike. I told each shop I visited just that. They would look me up and down and hand me a commuter or touring bike with the drop handlebars being the only thing related to what I needed. One even had the audacity to ask if I knew how to ride a bike after I had a long conversation about what I was looking for. Not taking me seriously until I mentioned my budget. This was the last bike shop (that sold road bikes) before going home in defeat and frustration. Even when entering the shop, it had the cleanest environment yet. Though not a crucial aspect of buying a bike from a shop, it was a nice bonus. My boyfriend and I were greeted by Christian who immediately assessed what I needed and got me set on a bike without even needing measurements. Whereas most of the other shops would hand me bikes that were way too small or so large I could barley turn the cranks. Needless to say he heard what I was asking for, took me seriously, and now I'm a happy owner of a new road bike. I'll definitely be coming back! Staff were friendly enough. Snowboard sizes are limited. But the rental fee is great if you can get a size to fit you. $25 for 48 hrs, then $8 for each additional day (snowboard only). But unlike most other ski shops, if you return the board the next day when the store opens (after the initial 48 hrs), they still charge you for the day. But I suppose you still come out ahead because of the low rental fee. And if you're returning it on a sunday, you'll have to book it out of mt baker early to get to the shop by their 5pm closing time. read more

He then proceeded to take a brand new specialized encore in my size down from the rack and said I could take that one. Great customer service in my eyes. in my opinion, these guys are as good as it gets. I have two Specialized bicycles that I bought when living in Arizona. Now that I have moved to Whatcom County, I looked for a shop to service them. Both bikes have gone in and had minor repairs and overhauls. I've been pleased with the quality of the work and felt the prices were reasonable. I was prompted to write this review when I needed help and advice in choosing a correct size for a bike I plan to rent while on a tour of Germany and Poland. It obviously was not going to be a sale for Fairhaven, but I was blown away by the time they spent helping me decide. They pulled out two different size bikes, let me try both, offered their thoughts and shared their years of experience in trying to find the correct size. I got the answer I wanted and all they got was a sincere thank you. Well, they've earned all my future business also. read more

People, tell the truth. We all like the staff, especially Steve, Matt, Patrick, and Guy. They are smart, honest and helpful. The merchandise is obviously a good mix of high to low price parts, yeah they don't have the selection of a mail order place, but who has that kind of space and they will order for you what you need. My complaints about the place are two. The owner, I avoid him, won't say anything more. And what is with the place trying to become the Specialized store? Maybe I want to ride a Specialized, but I want Oakley glasses, Giro helmets, Michelin tires, and Pearl Izumi shorts! read more

I was shopping for a new bike and went to 4 or 5 different bike stores to see what was available. Each of the stores had the kind of bike I was looking for in roughly the same price range but what set Fairhaven Bikes apart was the tremendous customer service. Matt went above and beyond helping me make my decision. He offered to fit the bike to me which no other shop did and swapped all the accessories from old bike to new at no charge. This place is incredible, I highly recommend this place to everyone that enjoys great service, great and quality bicycles and a wonderful bicycle shop. I just got done with an 800 mile tour and walked in as they opened. I needed a new rear cassette, brake pad work, tune-up and new bar tape. My bike needed some TLC. Mason was the man that helped me and he went ABOVE and BEYOND - to make my bicycle better than when I bought the darn thing. I've never scene it that clean and it rides like better then ever. Thanks a ton Mason, you've been the most friendly, helpful and knowledgeable bike mechanic I've ever worked with. If you're in Bellingham, you wouldn't regret giving this place a visit to rent a bike, buy a bike or get your bike serviced. We have been looking for a new BMX bike for our son. After looking around we found a SCREAMING deal on Fairhaven Bicycle's website. The price was truly great so we presumed it was a close-out deal or something. The bike was listed as in-stock. My wife placed the order and then headed out to get some shopping done and then go grab the bike. Three hours later when she was on her way home my wife had me call the shop to see if the bike was ready to pick up. I called the shop, asked about the order and was placed on hold while they checked. The woman who answered the phone came back a couple times with questions about the order before placing me on hold one more time. The phone was then picked up by a man called Casey who explained that the bike had to be special ordered in from the warehouse and wouldn't be ready today, that it would be at least a few days. He suggested I call my wife to let her know so she didn't waste a stop, and he requested I call him right back to get more details. I did just that. When I called back, Casey told me that the bike actually wouldn't be available, that it was somehow listed incorrectly on their website by the supplier (?) and that he had just talked to the guys downstairs (I presume at the shop) who had pulled the bike from their website around the time my wife placed the order. I have a suspicion that the bike was pulled from their website after (or because) my wife placed the order, which set off their alarms - a good bike at too good of a price. I am thoroughly unsatisfied with this experience with a somewhat reputable local business. Their website listed a bike as in-stock at a great price and we were able to place our order. I was told it would take a few days to get the bike in and was then told it wasn't going to happen. Errors happen, I understand, but I believe this order should have been honored. We will be taking our business elsewhere. I'd give the experience zero stars, but Casey was exceedingly polite and understanding when dealing with my displeasure over the phone. read more

Today I stopped in for a pump and stood for several minutes with cash waiting while several employees and an older man who I assume is the owner did their best to avoid eye contact. This isn't the first time, either. I've almost always left the store feeling insignificant and unappreciated. After shopping here for eight years being acknowledged is all I want. Just take my money. I needed a last minute repair on my road bike. My wife dropped if off at 3PM and when I called I was told there were 6 bikes ahead of me in line to be repaired. Nevertheless, the mechanic had it done by dinner time after calling to check in on the progress of repairs. Great turn around, helpful folks, quality service. Very satisfied. Last summer I bought a new cross bike for my wife. The shop was great about the whole process: sizing and ordering, fitting etc. They even swapped out a much nicer stem that fit her better for no additional charge. I'll be back! read more

I don't think I'm ever going to this place again. My bike needed brake adjustment and repair of a flat rear tire. I take my bike to this shop. I and this other elderly gentleman (I'm 70, he looked 80) were directed to crowd ourselves and our bikes into the elevator in the rear of the shop. We made it to the downstairs workshop where there were a lot of young guys sitting aound. I asked for brake adjustment and flat repair, got an OK, asked to be called, and left. Later that afternoon I called and was told that my bike was almost done. Wife drops me off at the shop. Downstairs again, they've put a huge clunky new tire on my bike. I now have to explain to the reader that my bike is a recumbent with small wheels (20" I think). For twelve years I've had lightweight high-pressure tires on it. I don't like the tire, but I let them talk me into tryng it ("It's more puncture-resistant.") I pay $58 and take my bike home and quickly discover that the big new tire rubs on part of the bike's frame; it's just too big for that bike. So the next day I go back to the shop. This time there's no parking in the street (it was a rare sunny day here in Bellingham), so I go down to the rear, haul my bike through a winding passageway and several doors marked Employees Only. By now I had a cold and felt lousy, so I wasn't all grandfatherly and twinkly, but I wasn't rude either. I told the young man in the repair shop that the tire wouldn't do, to please replace it. At this point the kid says for me to go upstairs and get a tire and bring it back to him. It was at this point that I decided never to shop here again. I asked him to do it for me, left my phone number, and asked them to call me and keep me informed as to progress. So far, two trips to the shop and not a single phone call. I just now called them, and got told my bike was "next in line." Don't get me wrong. My bike uses unconventional tires, and I'm used to having to wait while they're special ordered. So why don't they call me and keep me informed? My point here is this is a pricey bike shop in a tourist destination. I went there in order to avoid doing the work. Stooping & bending &carrying & peering through glasses, as you have to when doing bike work, gets old when you're old, as my readers will find out someday if they live long enough. I'm willing to pay for service -- and I did. $58 isn't a small charge. What I got was a bullshit quick fix, nobody in the shop even tested if my bike worked or not, and four unecessary trips. This not the kind of help customers are looking for. Whoever owns this business better get in and kick some ass, or his employees are going to lose his investment for him. read more

I had been a customer for almost 20 years, but this place has gone downhill the past few years and I will never go back. There are all around problems that i over looked the past couple of years, namely condescending attitute toward women in bike shops, but the clincher this past September was when the repair manager lied to me about a number of things. It was evident that he was not being honest, so I called him on it and he admitted lying. I reported this to John Hauter, the owner, and he said the person was a valued employee! I bought my first new bike from this store about a year and a half ago. The bike is very lightweight and has excellent ratings online, it is a specialized pitch 2017 mountain bike. One of the first times I rode it the rear derailleur hanger bent and I have brought it in to the shop at least 5 times throughout the year and a half I have owned it. I brought it in again earlier this week and I said I thought they should replace it because other bikes that I have ridden which have all been hand me downs have never had this problem while this bike has had it not once but five times in the short time I have had it. They refused and made it very hard to argue due to their polite demeanor. They were very good at handling me and convinced me for a short amount of time that that was normal in a bike but I later took it into treck which is only a few miles away from fairhaven bikes and was told that it was not normal. I do not recommend fairhaven bikes and I recommend bike owners go to the far superior treck bike shop. I would've given zero stars if I could. read more

This is the first time in 15 years of patronizing Fairhaven that I have had a problem. I bought a new Sirrus hybrid. They set it up out of the box. First, the tires had only 40 psi in them when the range was 70 -100. Secondly, on my first ride the computer sensor came loose and finally they installed the paniers incorrectly failing to adjust the clips to fit the rack. They were responsive to my concerns and hopefully quality control will improve as it is still my bike shop of choice in Bellingham. read more
