I stopped by Jack's earlier this week to soothe my donut cravings. I like Jack's because they are an Indiana-based franchise that started in New Castle. The business is still family run, but franchised. This is as my first time at this location. It was late in the morning, and my faves were sold out. The wait was long as there was only one clerk and several families ahead of me. I was ok with waiting because I could see what others were getting. There is a little bit of seating inside and a nice area for kids to color and watch cartoons. I took a seat at the counter to eat my donut. I selected one of the chocolate cake donuts. It's a rainy Friday and your Mom asks you to get her an Apple fritter so go to Jacks. It was after 11 and they still had a great selection of doughnuts. The fritters here are huge with lots of icing. More apples in the fritters would be great. We also tried a cinnamon roll with white icing and toasted coconut and a Boston cream filled which were both good. The staff were helpful and quick. Labeling the doughnuts in the cases would be nice to save time and not have to ask. Jacks is in a strip mall so plenty of parking. Very nice interior, lots of coffee and other drink options. I've been into Jack's about five times now. Each time, the service is slow and confused. Not that I'm confused, just that the workers don't really know what's going on. For example, today one lady didn't know what was in the various donuts and another lady didn't know how to use a gift card. Something like that seems to happen almost every time. Plus, because they are confused, they tend not to be very friendly, either. Weird. As for the donuts themselves, they are kind of gross. My kids don't like them, which is CRAZY! They like anything sweet. I think Jack's just tries too hard. They have all these weird, overly complicated donuts. They need to do the simple things well. It's like those craft beer people that can't get the basics right, but put a bunch of nonsense in their beer to mask the fact that it isn't very good. These blueberry donuts are great! They had some equipment issues when I stopped by initially but I picked up a dozen blueberry donuts and made reservations in the morning for a dozen yeast Halloween style pick up. Everything flowed together and it made a great treat for the little ones! read more

Donuts are good. Coffee is good. They support the Pacers, so that's good. They always seem to have a rush of people when I go in, which is good. Service is fairly quick. Employees seem to always be somewhat stressed, but I'm sure they have their fun moments, too. My biggest complaint is that they don't have their donuts labeled. I always feel so stupid when I order a donut and have to point to it because I don't know what it is. Once, I asked for (what looked like) a cherry-swirled donut. An employee looked down and said "we don't have a cherry donut." I pointed to it, and she said something along the lines of "oh. So you want a strawberry swirl donut." I felt like an idiot and grew frustrated because the confusions could be eliminated if they'd just put a tag or little sign in front of the trays of donuts. Also, it would be nice to know which donuts are "Gourmet" before ordering, so I know which ones I'm paying more for. We got 4 donuts of a variety of types from the huge : a strawberry cake donut, a Boston cream filled donut, a glazed croissant and one of the gourmet donuts, the bacon maple. We are not huge donut fans, but these were really good. We especially liked the glazed croissant. Coffee was lukewarm by mid afternoon, but they also have a variety of espresso drinks. I have never been to a Jacks donuts before and everyone was so excited this place was here. We stopped by at around 7:30 on a Wednesday night and there was a nice selection. I went for the half dozen but every donut I picked happened to be a "gourmet" so there was an upcharge. I wish the donors would have been labeled. So I didn't have to ask what everyone was. Also I wish the gourmet ones labeled as well. The staff was super friendly. The place was super clean. The taste was good. I liked them they were soft. I assume they are made there. So this is now a competitor with Hilligoss in Brownsburg. Honestly depends on what side of town you are on. Nothing for me will ever top the white powdered with fluff at Hilligoss but if I am on the north side of town I will swing by Jacks. The extended hours are amazing too. read more

We were visiting from out of town and came to Jack's for national donut day and this place had some of the best donuts I've ever had. We had pretty much everything they had in the case and our favorites were the chocolate glazed cream filled and also the chocolate and vanilla swirl cinnamon roll thing? With glaze maybe? Bottom line: updated take on the traditional donut shop. Fresh baked every night, if you come in at 5am, you can still get a warm donut. Just ask for the last thing that came out of the fryer. I got a 'tiger twist' bun that was still warm. It's essentially a vanilla yeast and chocolate yeast donut twisted together, fried, and glazed. Fantastic. Next, I tried the glaze covered croissant. It's a fried (not baked) croissant that's glazed. It's flaky, buttery, soft and sweet. Amazing. Then, I tried the peanut butter and chocolate donut. Think of a cinnamon bun, but with peanut butter twisted in instead, dipped in glaze, and topped in chocolate. Truly original, all of them. On the traditional side, I tried their apple fritter. A classic in a crowded donut space. Their fritter is thicker, dough-y-er, with a fair amount of cinnamon throughout. If you like your fritters light and crispy, this may seem, bread-y, but it is substantial and tasty. But if you want to try one of the above, get there before 10am. 9 is better. 6am is best. Their classic chocolate covered yeast donut has a light, almost chewy texture. Hard to describe, soft, light with a nice chocolate frosting. They also have a nice variety of cake donuts as well. Vanilla, chocolate, sour-cream, chocolate sour-cream, blueberry, strawberry, and sugar coated. Need I say more? While I didn't try them all, those I did were dense, soft, with a crispy exterior. Very rich in flavor. In fact, all of their donuts are so rich that you must have with a cup of milk or coffee, black. And if you're middle-aged like me, you may have to skip a meal, but believe me, it's worth it. In the world of upscale, hipster donut shops, Jack's is a recently franchise of a local donut shop from Eastern Indiana. A single family own shop from 1961 to 2013 where they've grown to almost two dozen. Great success story... as long as they don't go the way of the Krispy Kreme franchise debacle of 2000, I hope they make their way to MI and are around for a while. read more

The main reason though that we go is because it's about the only place with the ability to get gluten free donuts. Normally that would not sound like something you would want to eat, but these are for real, really really good. My wife and I grab 6 and then eat them over the course of two mornings. Really enjoyed this place the first few times my family and I visited. Best donuts we've had in a while! Since then, it seems their options have declined drastically. No matter what time or day we go, they have a very limited supply. The last 6 times we've visited before 8:30 am, there were no donuts with sprinkles. Just dozens upon dozens of the same few types (plain white/chocolate frosting). Maybe they're selling out at 5 am, but I wish they would bake more if that were the case. There are several things wrong with this particular Jack's. For starters the bakers make some of the donuts way to big. I've been to a couple of locations, so I'm pretty sure they're doing it wrong. The front staff has no idea what is out on display either. I asked what a couple of donuts were, and they had to ask someone else. Also, I love their lattes. They are very good and got me away from Starbucks. Every time I've gone to this location the latte I order tastes like hot garbage. The biggest issue I have is that their hours show that they close at 11:00 pm. When I tried to go in they were closed 2 hours early! They still had donuts, and even if they didn't they still had coffee! This was a very bad experience for a place I love going to at other locations. Hopefully they get their act together. read more
