Located in a plaza that already have a great restaurant called Dos Coyotes and a future location of Yogurtland, adding Jacks Urban Eats opens up everyone choices for their meal of the day. I first heard about this place from my coworker who happened to also work here. She said the food is good. Do I trust her? No. But why not give it a shot. My friends and I arrived around 4:30pm on Sunday and the place was pretty empty. We were greeted by this man (assuming he is the Manager) and he introduced us to the menu and some recommendations. I got the BBQ Tri-tip Sandwich and a small Urban Fries. The sandwich was very flavorful and all the ingredients tasted fresh. The Tri-tip was mediocre as both my roommate and I felt it needed to be more juicy. The fried onion strips added good flavor to the sandwich. BBQ sauce tasted like...well....bulk BBQ sauce, nothing special. I did some research about Jacks prior to going and I read a lot of recommendations on the Urban Fries. I ordered it today and felt it was over-hyped. It was regular fries with Blue Cheese dressing and spicy oil with pepper flakes. It was too heavy for me. What took away a star was the price. The sandwiches are good but not for the price they are charging. Also the sides are way too expensive. Mash potatoes for $2.95, no thanks. Overall my experience was good, food tasted good, service was excellent, price could be reduced or maybe add fries or garden salad as a small side. read more

Let me just start by saying I LOVE Jacks!!! My love for Jacks is what brought us to this location when we were in the area. We frequent Jacks because the food is good and I am able to chose Paleo options. But I was not super impressed with this location. First there was NO ONE in here during lunch time, which is something I have never experienced at any of the other Jacks locations. The one in Rancho Cordova and in Arden are packed all day long. Secondly, the people working there didn't seem to know anything about their food. I had to educate one person on how it worked and I don't even work there. Thirdly, I asked for the cranberry sauce to go with my turkey because unless I've asked for it at other locations I dont get it but she assured me that it automatically came with it but of course when I got my plate, it wasn't there so I had to go ask again. Fourth, the food took forever to come out despite us being only one of 2 tables in the entire place and the other table had already gotten their food. I ordered sliced turkey and asparagus and my husband ordered a sandwich. Fifth, the food was bland and tasted off compared to other locations. Overall: If in the area I will go back because I know I can get items I am able to eat but I won't be rushing back any time soon to this location. I'll stick with the other Jacks! I keep my four stars for the steak salad, but couldn't justify myself to keep Jacks at that status after my 2nd and 3rd trip. Tried the Sante Fe Salad and it was terribly bland. My BF had the Sonoma Steak Sandwich and the steak was so overcooked that we had to spend forever chewing after each bite. The BF did like the side of mac and cheese though, so at least they got that right. The Buffalo Chicken salad is okay, but gets soggy quick b/c they drench it with salad dressing. Maybe we went on a off day. I'll return when I crave steak salads, but probably not for anything else. Hands down the best ranch in Davis, top five in Northern California and top six in America. If you're looking for a thicker, creamier ranch that dances on your taste buds, this is the place to find it! I picked up notes of garlic and onion instantly as this delicious treat kissed my tongue. Jacks ranch is the perfect compliment to the heavenly cheese bread. Tip: It's FREE!!!! So ask nicely. It pairs well with a nice Double IPA or if you're a snob, it might go well with your boxed wine. Since I was introduced to another popular restaurant location with similar make-your-own salad and great tasting sandwiches, I am a little biased to this type of restaurant. I have had a few of their dishes. I will have to say that I simply like getting a side of tri-tip and grilled asparagus. When I have gone here with friends, we usually get a large order of Urban Fries. They are good, but nothing out of the extraordinary, just fries with blue cheese, cream, and red chili flakes. In my most recent visit, I ordered a Steak Salad which is described as "Grilled tri-tip, mixed greens, crumbled blue cheese, sun-dried cranberries, rosemary croutons, and red onion, with house-made balsamic vinaigrette." I was rather disappointed that the salad consisted of only lettuce. I suppose I should have checked with them about what "mixed greens" means, but I believe most assume that it is more than just lettuce. read more

First, I'm amazed and surprised at the number of negative reviews Jack's Urban Eats in Davis received from many disappointed customers - the place is really just a glorified high-school cafeteria. Like many businesses in California, they employ a familiar tactic which is to always - no matter what - smile... smile.. and more smiles... and then offer a meaningless apology for their endless stream of mistakes while they nickel and dime their customers. So displayed behind the counter is the carcass of a dead animal (turkey) for us carnivores to devour. Now, strangely enough, the only part of the turkey with a set price is the wings. Each wing cost $1.99. As far as a "drum stick" (see photo below) no one was able to tell me the cost ahead of time while I ordered, and only later the cashier charged me $14 for one drum stick. I've split the family size with a variety of groups - once it was with two people who weren't too hungry (they both got a side of mac n cheese and I got a sandwich) and another time I shared it with three others (we all had salads, one person had a sandwich). Turkey Berry - also good flavor profile, although some of the turkey was tough. The apple and walnut relish was good and added some nice texture/crunch. The cranberry and pomegranate was just the right sweetness. Same as the CA Cheesesteak in terms of price, though - too much for what you get. **I ordered this with a side of Mashed Potatoes and Gravy for $1.95 more, and the portion she gave me was HUGE! She got a take-out box with a piece of parchment and I thought she was going to scoop some and slide it over to nestle my sandwich inside, but 2.5 scoops later, the container was practically filled! 3. My friend and I both ordered and we asked for 3 sides of ranch and 1 side of Buffalo sauce. Brittney delivered our food and I noticed it was only 1 side of ranch. I immediately said aloud, "oh, can we..." and Brittney turns and walks the other direction. I figured that maybe I wasn't loud enough. So she walked by and I very loudly said, "excuse me." Jack's offers fresh food, but it is a bit overpriced. I always get the BBQ tritip and it comes with a pickle and a peppercini. The flavors are good and the bun is nice and chewy. They don't skimp on the meat and you can tell its quality. I also appreciate that they cut it in half and stick a toothpick through to hold it together. Must get urban fries!! Small is good for 1-2 people and family is good for 3-4. Yum!! If it was slightly cheaper, I would find myself here more often. But you get what you pay for! read more

I'm surprised Jack's doesn't get better reviews. This is a great place to bring the family, with lots of comfortable booths and outdoor seating. There's also delivery using doordash. My kids are obsessed with their mac and cheese, which is firmer pasta than most mac & cheese and the cheese tastes less processed & less salty than most. I like their steak salad & caesar salad. I love jacks but this location is shit. First time here but won't be back. The service was quick given it was dead when we came in. But the salad was lacking.. they didn't even care to cut the avocado half they threw on top of it not to mention how dark brown the avocado had turned and they still chose to put on the plate. The steak was overcooked when asked for medium-- the phillycheese steak I got wasn't awful but wasn't like ones I have had else where presentation or taste. Jack's used to be my favorite restaurant in Davis but the quality of service and food has declined drastically. This is what they now consider a "steak salad": five pieces of small,dry, fatty steak, with a few ultra rare ones thrown in. And when we brought up our concerns to the staff, they were extremely condescending and would not do anything to fix the situation or even provide explanation for why their food is such low quality. Went here for the first time the other night and was happily surprised by the experience. Despite the negative reviews the food was pretty good and the staff was very helpful. I returned yesterday for the third time since my childhood and was pleasantly surprised by the upgrade in management. I was so happy to be greeted by the most warmest manger, despite the mask and the thankless job I could tell a happy smile was placed upon her face. I think her name was Caroline and she personally made sure that the chicken was weighed to perfection for my salad. I would like to thank her for making sure my mom, who is epileptic, was safe the entire time in her restaurant. Polite, fast service with one of the most flavorful salads I've ever had only added to the amazing conversation and get to know you time. If I was rating on the taste of the food I'd probably give a four star, I had the bbq tritip sandwich with a side salad and a drink. Everything was good, I cleared my plate could have had a bit more flavor here or there but was pretty good over all. My problem comes with ordering with the staff. I ordered the bbq tritip sandwich off the menu which said 10.50, they then asked me what side I wanted and listed off a list of possible options, I wasn't really feeling any of them so I went with a side salad. At no time did anyone mention this would be an additional cost. I assumed by them asking right out what I wanted with it, that it would be included. The side salad I did receive was just lettuce and shredded carrot that's it. I wouldn't have ordered a side had I known it would be for an additional cost. And to me that's just completely dishonest when the employees knew it was our first time in. I generally love the food and service at jacks (except the Mac and cheese) but this last time I went I just had a horrible customer service experience. The manager, I believe her name is Brittany, was rushing me while I was ordering my food and was constantly on her phone. She also seemed to be judgmental, (at least I felt judged) towards me in food selection, as I ordered extra chicken strips. I just go off a very long and tiring vet shift and I just really wanted some urban fries and chicken strips without being judged. I also did not appreciate the way she was treating her employees. Having previously worked at a restaurant, this isn't the proper management that needs to be established in order for a successful restaurant. I hope they improve their management team, won't be eating here until it resolved. read more
